Presently the Verano makes use of GM's 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine in non-turbo trim; 2014 documentation appears to indicate that GM's entry-level luxury compact will instead feature a 1.6-liter turbocharged mill. If this is the same engine seen in Europe, GM Inside News suggests it may offer 192 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque - useful improvements over the larger naturally aspirated mill's 180 hp and 171 lb-ft. More importantly, the downsized engine would likely improve on the Verano's current fuel mileage estimates of 21 city and 31 highway. We like the Verano in both of its current iterations, but the 1.6 turbo engine sounds like a worthwhile upgrade if this reports turns out to be true. Se trata de los Peugeot 206+ y la versión familiar del Dacia Logan, ambos vehículos con unos cuantos años a sus espaldas. Los interesados en ellos deberán darse prisa pues no es mucho el stock acumulado. Peugeot ha optado por suprimir de la oferta española -y en muchos mercados europeos- el 206+ para dejarle hueco al 207+, básicamente idéntico al 207 convencional pero limitado en equipamiento y oferta. Sólo se vende con los motores 1.4i de 75 CV y 1.4 HDI de 70 CV, y un único nivel de acabado muy básico. No podrán incorporar climatizador ni paquete visibilidad, aunque sí control de velocidad y el ESP es de serie en todas las versiones. Audi says that it is the world's first industrial plant for generating e-gas from CO2 and renewable electricity. Its end product will be hydrogen and synthetic Audi e-gas, which will be used as climate-friendly fuel for vehicles such as the new Audi A3 Sportback TCNG. E-gas production will begin in the spring of 2013. The Audi e-gas plant will utilize renewable energy for electrolysis. The electrolysis process splits water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen, or Audi e-hydrogen, which at some point can be used to power fuel-cell vehicles. Since there's not much of a hydrogen fueling infrastructure in place yet, Audi can react the hydrogen with CO2 in a methane-processing unit to generate renewable synthetic methane, or Audi e-gas. The e-gas can be delivered to fueling stations through the local natural-gas network, since chemically speaking, the e-gas is nearly identical to fossil-based natural gas. Audi unveiled the 2013 A3 Sportback in Munich, right before the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September. The five-door hatchback features a bi-fuel powertrain as part of the Audi e-gas project. Since compressed natural gas fueling stations are hard to find, the A3 also makes use of a 13-gallon gasoline tank to help give the car an effective range of around 745 miles. The e-gas initiative is part of Audi's strategy of bringing cleaner, carbon-neutral fuel to internal combustion engines. The Werlte plant will generate enough CO2-neutral e-gas to power 1,500 new Audi A3 Sportback TCNG vehicles 15,000 kilometers (9,320 miles) each year. This compact five-door hatchback is scheduled to arrive at dealerships in late 2013. Audi gets the CO2 to power the e-gas plant from a nearby biogas plant, operated by energy company EWE. The CO2 is made climate neutral by being chemically bonded into the fuel at the Audi e-gas plant, so that it won't pollute the atmosphere. Audi's new e-gas plant will be able to annually produce about 1,000 metric tons (1,102 US tons) of e-gas, and will chemically bind about 2,800 metric tons of CO2. That's roughly the equivalent to the amount of CO2 that can be absorbed by about 224,000 beech trees in a year. Audi was given an award for its e-gas project in November. Now, GM is laying out some of the specifics of the deal while Automotive News Europe is reporting plans have been scrapped to produce a shared platform for a midsize sedan. In "definitive agreements" between the two automakers, GM says that three new vehicle platforms are still on track; one of these will bring a new compact minivan to GM's Opel and Vauxhall brands and a compact crossover to Peugeot, and the other platform will be for B-segment minivans for both entities to share. ANE says that the proposed shared platform for the Opel Insignia and Citroën was canceled due to the lack of a sound business case. In addition to cars, the joint venture will also be an opportunity for both automakers to develop "high-performance, efficient" gasoline engines and to create joint purchasing to allow both companies to potentially save money (this aspect of the agreement is still pending legal clearance from anti-trust approvals). Even the press release that we requested from Risden's contact person is short and vague. That's all pretty much okay with us as long as the shadowy tuners, you know, make good on this sweet-looking BMW M6 racecar thing. Dubbed the Risden 6R, we're told that the M6 modification will result in a vehicle that is more adept at track work, while still being street-legal. In terms of specifics, we read that a full aero kit will be involved, with one fixed and one retractable rear wing (hard to miss). There are obviously new wheels, and the company has also added a fully adjustable suspension, a four-point roll bar and a new braking system - all while reducing curb weight overall. Apparently more details are to follow after the 6R's official release in the first quarter of 2013. | Posted: 22 Dec 2012 08:46 AM PST  Report: New Vancouver bridge closed because design causes "ice bombs" to rain down on cars [w/video] Filed under: Etc., Safety, Canada Spanning 10 lanes of traffic, the Port Mann Bridge (shown in the rendering above) just outside of Vancouver, Canada is currently the widest bridge in the world. Unfortunately, it might also hold a new record for the shortest period of time a new bridge has remained open. The cable-stayed bridge just opened to full traffic earlier this month, but on Wednesday it was shut down due to massive chunks of ice falling from the cables and striking vehicles, which sent at least two people to the hospital. According to CBC News, the bridge has since reopened to traffic, but apparently nothing has been done about the falling ice as the Vancouver area is slammed with a severe winter storm. Construction of the bridge began back in 2009 at a cost of more than $3 billion, but it isn't clear if any changes are needed to prevent this sort of damage from happening in the future. Images of vehicles posted on The Province show damage that ranges from shattered windows and windshields to some pretty intense body damage. The first is for 2008-2009 GS and 2010 RS models. The fuel vapor canister vent hose in the engine compartment can leak, with accumulated fuel vapor a potential fire concern due to its proximity to the ignition. A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates the recall, which affects 9,600 Spyders, is expected to begin next month, at which time owners can take their Spyders to their dealers for a fix free of charge. The second recall covers 2008-2009 GS, 2009-2012 RS and 2010-2012 RT trikes. The models affected by the recall - 33,700 units in all - could have fuel caps that fail to fit properly onto their filler necks, which could also leak fuel vapors. Cuando uno piensa en el Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, lo primero que viene a la mente es un meteorito naranja que cruza el desierto a una velocidad de infarto, saltando de duna en duna o pasando por las rocas como si fuesen simple gravilla. Es así, en parte, porque cruzar el desierto y subir por caminos forestales llenos de barro como si nada fue una de las condiciones impuestas al departamento Special Vehicles Team (SVT) de Ford a la hora de crear el Raptor. Por otra parte, son los escenarios dominantes en los anuncios del Raptor. Montajes marketing a parte, no cabe duda que el Raptor tiene una presencia inusual, incluso en su tierra natal, al otro lado del charco. Da la sensación que puede con todo y que lo hará con entusiasmo. Sin embargo, al principio no era así. En Ford sabían que podía ser un buen todoterreno, pero no pensaban en él como un vehículo extremo; simplemente era un todoterreno muy potente. No eran conscientes de haber creado un coche tan polivalente. En 2009, una enorme tormenta de nieve dejó en tierra a todos los ejecutivos de Ford y la prensa que tenían que asistir al salón de Chicago. Los pilotos de Ford se negaron a volar derechos hacia semejante tempestad. Los vuelos comerciales cancelados, algunos ejecutivos, como Mark Fields, tuvieron que viajar en tren hasta Chicago. Tras ocho horas de viaje y exhaustos, llegaron al salón a tiempo para la rueda de prensa. Otros ejecutivos, como Jamal Hameedi, el jefe de SVT, y su equipo no se cortaron y cogieron unos Raptor. | Posted: 22 Dec 2012 05:37 AM PST  Official: Daimler exec Harald Kroeger named to Tesla board Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Manufacturing/Plants, Tesla Motors Tesla Motors has brought in another Daimler AG executive to its board of directors - Harald Kroeger, Daimler's vice president of electrics, electronics and e-Drive. Kroeger replaces Daimler's Herbert Koehler, who resigned from the Tesla board on December 12. Koehler had been a board member since Daimler invested in the company in 2009. As Tesla CEO Elon Musk told us earlier this year, Tesla received a $50-million investment at a much-needed time in the electric carmaker's history. As Musk said, "thankfully, Daimler, with whom we had a small deal to produce battery packs for the Smart [ED] actually invested $50 million into Tesla in the nick of time. It wasn't some huge altruistic gesture, but nonetheless, they had to have faith that their $50 million wouldn't go down the drain." Other than battery packs for the Smart electric drive, Tesla hasn't yet announced signing another contract with Daimler similar to Tesla's alliance with Toyota on its RAV4 EV's electric powertrain system. Tesla will also make a powertrain for the B-Class E-Cell, but details are sparse on that. Musk did say that "it's a big program, it's not a marketing or a demonstration program. It is a serious, high-volume program." In a recent public regulatory filing, Tesla stated that the board change is the "result of a natural transition of responsibilities at Daimler AG with respect to the development of electric vehicle powertrains."Tesla's financial sheet is getting better, as Tesla announced being cash flow positive earlier this month, and that profits may be earned next year through sales of its Model S. Musk also seems to be doing well - he's described in the Automotive News article as "billionaire Elon Musk." A man in Waterton Park, (south of Calgary), came out to find the inside of his 18 month old Toyota Sequoia trashed. A grizzly bear had somehow got a door open.
