A BTS video on a Hollywood production is usually "This is how we got this shot right," whereas in this kind of video, it's often "This how many way potential ways we might get this shot wrong." There's plenty of both as Block and crew show how the stunts around San Francisco were executed, including the scenes at Russian Hill, Potrero Hill, Twin Peaks, Battery Street, the Bay Bridge and the barge in the bay. Industry consultant Dr. Menahem Anderman interviewed automakers and battery makers and is forecasting electric vehicles, plug in hybrid electric vehicles and hybrids will see growth through 2020, with hybrids taking the lion's share. The report is forecasting that global EV sales will grow from 65,000 units in 2012 to 450,000 in 2020, PHEVs will sell 57,000 units in 2012 and 750,000 in 2020 and regular gas-electric hybrids will reach 1.57 million units in 2012 and about 4.1 million in 2020.Lithium ion batteries will power the electrification for all three categories. Anderman's xEV Industry Insider Report says that the li-ion automotive battery business will skyrocket from $1.4 billion in 2012 sales to $8.5 billion in 2020. Heavy subsidies by governments and automakers haven't helped EV sales get to where they were expected to be in 2012, while hybrid sales are more in line with industry estimates. The future doesn't look all that much brighter. The report projects that EVs and PHEVs will only make up 0.6 percent of anticipated 2016 vehicle sales. Anderman expects opportunities to emerge for hybrid batteries and vehicles through various functionalities, voltages, power levels and energy-storage capacities. The short version of the problem is that, the higher the level of electrification, the more problematic the cost/performance ratio of the vehicles. This explains weak customer demand, the report says. Right now, government policies are having a critical impact on electrification, especially from California's Zero Emission Vehicle regulation, Europe's tailpipe CO2 regulation, and China's "new energy vehicle" rules. Dr. Anderman's report is based on on-site interviews with senior battery technologists and business development executives at 15 global automakers and 25 of their current and prospective battery suppliers. Anderman consults with automakers, battery companies and related stakeholders regularly in his role as founder and chairman of the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference. The 13th annual conference is scheduled to start February 4, 2013, in Pasadena, CA. While business looks bright for li-ion battery makers, a shake-out is expected soon with a smaller number of players left standing. Strategy consultancy Roland Berger updated his 2010 report in October on the li-ion business, warning that only six to eight global players in the rechargeable battery business would survive through 2017. You know, with the whole "Imported from Detroit" campaign featuring Eminem? It seems brand synergy may have reached its peak in the form of the Chrysler 300 Motown. According to Chrysler, this special edition sedan sedan "pays tribute to the Motor City's resurgence and determination through Detroit-born style and world class ingenuity." In real terms, that means extra chrome bits here and there, including a chrome grill and 20-inch polished "heritage" style aluminum wheels, all accented with black Chrysler and "Motown" badges. Inside, the 300 Motown gets unique Pearl White Nappa leather seating, while the rest of the interior fittings are black. In a nice nod, the Uconnect 8.4 infotainment system's SD card reader has been pre-loaded with 100 tracks from original Motown artists. That collection of music pumps though the 10-speaker Beats Audio system, complete with 12-channel amplifier. Altima number four million was also a party to the best single year of sales ever for the nameplate - Nissan broke its 2007 record of 284,762 Altimas sold. The automaker is using the occasion of the record-breaking Altima to crow a little bit about the impressive stats for the 2013 car, as well. Nissan says that both transaction price and residuals are trending upward compared with Altimas past, and that 25 percent of those that have purchased the 2013 car traded in a Toyota or a Honda to do so. Certainly the strong Altima sales have helped Nissan's fortunes as a whole, too. For reference, a standard daily trading volume for the stock in 2012 saw about 600k shares trading hands. On November 2nd, the company made public the bad news about the dropping fuel economy ratings for many of its models. In other words: No one outside of the company (and only a smallish group inside the company, we'd imagine) should have known anything about the impending bad news as of the first day of November. After the announcement, the stock price tanked, as you'd expect, and trading volume was way down as well. Experts seem fully aware that the whole thing reeks of leaked information and subsequent insider trading. If chicanery on this sort of scale seems wacky to you, you'd be inline with the experts who report to Reuters that the level of trading is absolutely suspicious. The problem is, it seems, that this kind of market reaction is far from uncommon in Asia, especially. Research points out that 26 percent of price-sensitive announcements in the Asia Pacific region showed some hint of information leakage, just in the first quarter of this year. For many, it's off to the scrap heap, while others manage to find their way into various automotive museums and private collections. Yet it is a select few that enjoy the honor of actually being driven on open roads. What you see here is the latter. In 1988, design house Italdesign brought its wildly futuristic Aztec Barchetta concept to the Turin Motor Show. Visually, there were a lot of things going on here with the design, including spacecraft-styled rear quarter panels, see-through doors and a bold dual cockpit design. The body was constructed out of aluminum, Kevlar and carbon fiber. Additionally, the coupe features an intercom so the driver and passenger can hold conversations at speed. While the styling is fit for an auto show floor, the mechanicals are borrowed from some of Europe's rallying greats, including the 250-horsepower five-cylinder of the Audi Quattro and a transmission borrowed from the Lancia Integrale's parts bin. Yet you'll deduce from the 1992 model year on our headline that this isn't the same car that premiered in Turin in 1988. That's right, this is a street-legal production car. As the story goes, Myakawa, a Japanese industrial corporation, bought the rights to the concept and had German-based Audi tuner, Motoren-Tecknik-Mayer (better known as MTM) produce the Aztec Barchetta in very limited numbers. The first one built performed exhibition laps at the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix, and the originals sold for hundreds of thousands when new. Very few were made (estimates vary wildly, from 15 to 50), with this model being assembled in UK spec. That's quite an accomplishment in light of the fact that it isn't even calendar year 2013. The move is part of a strategic decision by the Japanese automaker, which is hoping to capitalize on holiday showroom traffic. (The last five days of the year are typically among the busiest dealer days all year). If you happen to spy the rakish sedan, you may notice something missing - a window sticker. That's because Mazda (like other automakers) can't legally display the Monroney on a 2014 model year vehicle until January 1, 2013. According to Autoblog sources, Mazda dealers are legally prohibited from letting you test drive until the start of 2013, so it's more of a sneak preview than anything else. Even so, we reckon shoppers will be impressed when they finally get a look at those window stickers - Mazda hasn't announced fuel economy figures yet, but Autoblog has learned that the 2014 model will carry a pair of impressive numbers: EPA estimates of 27 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg on the highway using regular gas. Mazda dealers are legally prohibited from letting you test drive until the start of 2013, so it's more of a sneak preview than anything else. Según ha comunicado la firma en sus primeras cuatro semanas a la venta se han contabilizado 8.149 pedidos en firme, o lo que es lo mismo, cuatro veces más de las estimaciones iniciales. Subaru tenía previsto comercializar unas 2.000 unidades mensuales en su mercado local, pero se han visto desbordados con la demanda. Como curiosidad podemos decir que el 90% de los pedidos del nuevo Forester están equipados con el sistema Eye Sight mientras que el motor de acceso de dos litros acumula casi dos tercios del total. En cuanto al 2.0 Turbo, el más demandado ha sido el que se combina con el completo nivel de acabado XT. Esto también le pasó hace unos meses con el nuevo Impreza y, en menor medida, con el coupé BRZ. When it comes to the new Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited, though, think cell phone, not a parking space with a resonance pad. The Japanese automaker, which started selling the updated 2013 versions of both the standard Avalon and Avalon Hybrid this month, is offering a feature that lets drivers of both models charge up their portable devices wirelessly inside the car. The so-called Qi wireless charging system involves a charging pad that's located beneath a lid inside the car's center console. Put your phone on the lid's "high-friction" service and, voila, instant juice. Toyota says 34 cell phone models, including the LG Google Nexus 4 and Nokia Lumia 920, are compatible with the system, which Toyota says is the first of its kind in the world. The Avalon Hybrid was rated this summer to get the magic 40 miles per gallon in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway. You can already read the (mostly) complete roster of vehicles that will be up for grabs at the annual event, and each item on the docket offers complete information as to year, make, model and a full description of the item. But then there's lot No. 3016: Not a single bit of information is given, except that the vehicle is a Chevrolet, and that it's a "piece of Chevy history." All proceeds from this "special Chevrolet model" will be donated to the Center for Creative Studies, and the auction takes place at 8:30 PM on Saturday, January 19. This wouldn't be the first big model to be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson event. Back in June, the first production 2013 SRT Viper was sold for $300,000, and General Motors has historically used the event to auction off and even debut special edition Corvette models. Given the fact that the Viper auction netted just over $200,000 more than the car's list price, a similar auction with the highly anticipated C7 Corvette could bring in some seriously big bucks. Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Chevrolet Just when we thought that the horsepower battle between Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro had reached its zenith with the 662-horsepower Shelby GT500, it appears that Chevrolet won't go down without a fight. Based on an official-looking Vehicle Identification Number decoder (click the above image to enlarge) that Camaro5 managed to get its hands on, the 2014 Camaro might be getting ready to receive a few tweaks under the hood. The biggest news is that an LS7 V8 engine looks to be joining the Camaro family for the 2014 model year. The 7.0-liter LS7 is currently used in the Corvette Z06 with a power rating of 505 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque, which is much less power than the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 used in the Camaro ZL1 putting out 580 hp and 556 lb.-ft. Interestingly, though, there are no new trim level listed on the detailed sheet, suggesting this engine could be destined to find its way into one of the Camaro's existing model, though a few months ago, it was reported that GM filed trademark papers for the Z/28 moniker, a storied designation in Camaro history. On the opposite end of the performance spectrum, the decoder also appears to indicate that the Camaro's base 3.6-liter V6 will become E85 capable. We'll wait until we hear official word from General Motors on either regard to get too excited, but both are promising leads for Camaro fans. | Posted: 21 Dec 2012 12:11 PM PST  Quick Spin: 2013 Honda Accord Coupe V6 6MT Filed under: Coupe, Honda, Quick Spins One of the first cars I reviewed for Autoblog was - say it with me now - a 2010 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L V6 w/Navi 6MT, perhaps the rarest of all modern Accord models. I mean, think about it: Of all the different Accord variants on the road, how many are coupes? And how many of those have the larger V6 engine? And how many of those are fully loaded with leather, navigation and all the trimmings? And finally, how many of those have option sheets where the only box that isn't checked is the automatic transmission? That has to be something like one percent of one percent, right? So when Honda started rolling its all-new 2013 Accord into the test fleet, I was happy to hear that yet another Coupe EX-L V6 w/Navi 6MT model was available out of the Detroit pool. And while this really isn't the car that serves as the control for judging the entire Accord line, it's still one heck of a sweetheart. It's the Journalist Special all over again.Driving Notes This thing is quick. Honda's revised Earth Dreams 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque in this application, and that's plenty in a car that weighs in at just 3,400 pounds. Honda does not release performance data, but instrumented buff-book testing has revealed 0-60 times as low as 5.6 seconds. For reference, that's three-tenths of a second quicker than the bonkers Ford Focus ST. Straight-line acceleration isn't the only bit of behind-the-wheel joy here. The steering is nicely weighted with plenty of feedback, the chassis is well-tuned to handle the V6 grunt (though you can get the front wheels to spin on hard launches), and the whole package feels tossable and nimble. As Executive Editor Chris Paukert said to me, it's sort of like a lux'd-out latter-day Honda Prelude. Or to my mind, a more civilized, grown-up version of the current Civic Si. Accord V6 sedans aren't available with the six-speed manual transmission found here in the coupe, and for those who do opt for it, they're in for a treat. Quick shifts are easy to knock off thanks to pleasantly short throws and well-placed pedals with a nicely weighted clutch. I've really warmed to the Accord's new styling... mostly. The front fascia with its LED running lamps is an attractive, aggressive sight, and I like the profile stance with the handsome 18-inch alloy wheels of this test car, but I'm not too keen on those small faux air vents with reflector strips that are housed above the dual exhaust pipes. The chrome trim on the bottom of the rear bumper could certainly go away, too. There's a lot to like inside the Accord, too. Everything in the cabin feels solid and well-built, and the overall design is fresh and modern. I don't quite get the whole dual-screen center console design, and I'm still not a big fan of Honda's new Lane Watch blind spot monitoring system. Yeah, it's cool, but it'd be even cooler if it showed the driver's side trouble spots. Even with the camera in place, I still find myself using the mirrors. But here's the tough part: this whole package, as tested, is $33,140. It's a fantastic car, this Accord Coupe, and for the enthusiast who wants a sort of sporty, larger, surprisingly luxurious coupe, you could certainly do worse. That said, we imagine this build combination will account for maybe one percent of all Accord sales, and at the end of the day, it's a $33k Honda coupe. The company has reached an agreement with the operator of the German railway network to start testing the vehicles within a car-sharing network in Berlin starting early next year. Railway operator Deutche Bahn and Hiriko will start a pilot project in 2013, with plans for a broader rollout of the vehicle the following year. Deutche Bahn called Hiriko an "ideal partner to complement its extensive railway network." Hiroko consists of a Basque consortium of auto suppliers and engineers from MIT. The company, whose name loosely means "from the city" in Basque, has about an $87 million budget and has built about 20 vehicles for testing purposes, the New York Times reported in August. The Fold is the first of three versions that will be put out by Hiriko. There are also plans for the Alai (convertible) and Laga (truck). The car is about eight feet long, about a foot shorter than Daimler's Smart Fortwo, in regular form, and can be folded to a length of about five feet. The car's four wheels can also rotate at a 60-degree angle.
