Official: Nissan Leaf CarWings network causing trouble for many drivers
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan Something is up with the Nissan Carwings data network, a way for the all-electric Leaf to communicate with smartphones and the mothership back in Japan. Carwings is how drivers can remotely charge their vehicles and heat or cool the cabin. What the current problem is is not fully understood, but Nissan is admitting there's an issue. On its Leaf Facebook page, Nissan Social wrote: Nissan LEAF Owners: We are aware of an issue with connectivity between the remote functions between your CARWINGS smartphone app and your LEAF. Please be assured that we've been working around the clock to address this issue and are closing in on a fix ASAP. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes you. We agree, that's not all that helpful. Over on the MyNissanLeaf forum, you can find plenty of reports from Leaf drivers all over. Users have not yet been able to figure out a fix (by resetting their phones or parts of the car, for example). Even worse, the outage has apparently been going on for about a week now and, as AutoblogGreen reader Michael W put it, "As someone who works in IT, and has 6 servers I manage, I would be on my way to the unemployment line pretty darn quick if I'd let an unresolved issue plague a mission critical server for 7 days!" We've asked Nissan for more information about what is known about the problem but have not yet heard back.Nissan Leaf CarWings network causing trouble for many drivers originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 19:44:00 EST. Hate Rust? I Will Show You One Way To Slow It Down.
Jeremy NuttAs you may have heard, in New England, we have rusty cars. Lots of them. It's disgusting. The best that we can hope for is that our fenders and suspension don't fly off unexpectedly on the highway. Because that kind of stuff actually happens around here. Quite regularly, I see control arms rotted in half, entire mufflers in the middle of the road, and struts where the lower coil mount snaps off and allows the coil to stab the tire. . . . → Read More: Hate Rust? Official: Volkswagen headed back to Super Bowl with new ad [w/videos]
Filed under: Car Buying, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, VolkswagenVolkswagen has proven that it can make a big splash among the high-dollar Super Bowl ad blitz. In the 2011 edition of the Big Game, the German automaker debuted The Force spot, which was widely popular, arguably maintaining its significance even after the 2012 Super Bowl spots aired. Recognizing the popularity of that ad and capitalizing upon it, VW unveiled The Bark Side. According to VW, its ad campaign pulled huge numbers, with more than 55 million online views for The Force, and said helped contributed towards VW's 35 percent year-to-date sales increase. Volkswagen sees this year's Super Bowl as another chance to make gains in the American automotive marketplace. To that end, it is returning a fresh new ad. While no details were given as to the content of the ad, the Star Wars-inspired ads will be a hard act to follow. Check out the previous VW Super Bowl ads below and let us know if you think VW will go the Star Wars route again in the comments below.Continue reading Volkswagen headed back to Super Bowl with new ad [w/videos]Volkswagen headed back to Super Bowl with new ad [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 19:15:00 EST. Opinion: These are a few of my favorite (and least favorite) things
Filed under: Etc., Technology, Design/Style, InfotainmentNew Cars Continue To Amaze And Dismay The Ford Fusion's sleek shape proves midsize cars need not be boring. Automakers face a huge challenge in creating cars that have to meet a dizzying array of emission, safety and fuel economy regulations and at the same time meet or exceed the expectations of potential customers. Usually the makers who succeed are the ones who are able to surprise and delight drivers with unique designs, technology and features. It's a hard job since some of these great ideas can simply amaze or, if poorly done, merely annoy. As cars become more uniform in performance and function, manufacturers will look even harder for that special something to stand out from the crowd. So here are a few things in the current crop of new cars that have surprised, delighted, and yes, annoyed. Matt DeLorenzo is the former editor-in-chief of Road & Track and has covered the auto industry for 35 years, including stints at Automotive News and AutoWeek. He has authored books including VW's New Beetle, Chrysler's Modern Concept Cars, and Corvette Dynasty. Report: Toyota offering up to $7,500 incentices for RAV4 EV; some customers will pay just $32,000
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Toyota Nationwide Insurance tries to attract potential customers on its so-called "vanishing deductible." Toyota is offering a somewhat similar "vanishing price tag" on its battery-electric RAV4 EV. The Japanese automaker, which recently started selling the all-electric 'ute in California, is offering a limited number of customers $5,000 cash back plus $2,500 in "loyalty cash," Plug In Cars reports, citing this Toyota dealer website. But wait, there's more. Customers who buy by January 7 can also get zero-percent financing. All told, customers factoring in the $7,500 federal tax credit for plug-in vehicles and the $2,500 clean-vehicles rebate from the state of California can cut the cost of a new RAV4 EV by $17,500. That means the RAV4 EV's sticker price rings up at about $32,000 instead of the more typical $49,800. Toyota, which first unveiled the RAV4 EV at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, disclosed initial pricing in May, and in September announced a 36-month lease option with a 1.9-percent APR loan that runs $599 per month with $3,499 down. That month, the RAV4 received a 78 miles-per-gallon equivalent rating from the EPA, which gave the car a 103-mile single-charge range rating. Toyota expects to sell about 2,600 of the EVs through 2014.
Report: Lincoln MKC crossover headed for Detroit
Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Crossover, Lincoln, Luxury Fresh off the launch of the stylish new MKZ sedan, the newly named Lincoln Motor Company is reportedly preparing for a lineup expansion. According to The Detroit Bureau, the first new product joining the Lincoln brand is a small crossover based on the Ford Escape said to be called the MKC. We saw this machine testing a few months ago, and while we were hoping the name might be reserved for a future two-door model or even the diminutive Concept C hatchback, it looks like the "C" will stand for compact crossover instead. The report also says that this crossover will be making its debut next month at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, so we'll have to wait until then to see what the new model looks like. Unlike the MKX, which is based off the Ford Edge, we would expect there to be a lot more differentiation between the MKC and the Escape like Ford managed to do with the newest Fusion and MKZ. In addition to the new MKC, the article states new MKS and Navigator designs are expected to debut by 2014.Lincoln MKC crossover headed for Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 17:44:00 EST. Official: Slovakia gets super with Praga R1 [w/video]
Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, Europe, Specialty, Racing Yes, bare-bones roadsters like the Ariel Atom and KTM X-Bow are nice, but we can't help but feel those machines are held back by their (quasi) street legal status. What we want is a carbon fiber track animal. Something like the Praga R1. The Slovakian-built racer reads like a personal wish list for going faster. With a curb weight of just 1,261 pounds dry and 210 horsepower from a Renault four-cylinder mounted amidships, the R1 should be a blast to fling around a road course. A six-speed sequential transmission puts power to the rear wheels and a set of AP Racing brakes brings the contraption down from speed. Praga also seems concerned with keeping its buyers in one piece. Six-point race harnesses, neck restraints and an integrated OMP fire suppression system are all part of the package. There's no word on how much the R1 will set you back, but we imagine it won't be cheap. You can watch it whip around a track in the video below.Continue reading Slovakia gets super with Praga R1 [w/video]Slovakia gets super with Praga R1 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 17:00:00 EST. SRT belatedly claims Plymouth Prowler as one of its own
Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Performance, Plants/Manufacturing, Chrysler, Dodge, Specialty, Design/Style Before Chrysler had Street and Racing Technology, it had Performance Vehicle Operations. What the two entities have in common, before SRT became its own brand, of course, is that each was created to take Chrysler and Dodge (and Plymouth, before it was unceremoniously killed off) vehicles to the next level of style and performance. We'll leave the question of whether or not the old Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler was ultimately a stylish, performance-oriented car to you, but the boys and girls currently leading the SRT charge at the Pentastar headquarters are keen to accept the retro-rod into the fold. According to the automaker, all of SRT's current high-performance models owe a debt of gratitude to the old Prowler, due mostly to that car's use of lightweight bits and pieces and innovative construction techniques. If nothing else, the fact that the Prowler's frame is "the largest machined automotive part in history" is pretty cool. Official: Infiniti takes to Facebook to explain model names, mentions 550-hp flagship
Filed under: Infiniti Infiniti caused quite a stir this week when it announced that it would be changing its vehicle names so that all of its cars start with Q and all of its crossovers and SUVs start with QX. Many displeased fans and owners took to social media to voice their opinions, and Johan de Nysschen, the new Infiniti boss, responded today with a Facebook post of his own. In the note, de Nysschen talks about the challenge of product expansions with alphanumeric names that allow for flexibility without encroaching on the trademarked names of other automakers, although we're sure de Nysschen's former colleagues at Audi aren't looking forward to a Q30 or Q50. He also says that as Infiniti grows to become a global brand, the new naming structure - which closely mimics Volvo - is also designed to reduce confusion (just don't tell that to current owners). One thing that de Nysschen assured wouldn't happen is a confusing "X" added to the end of all-wheel-drive model names that would result in names like the Q60X or, even worse, the QX50X. While we are not looking forward to relearning Infiniti's product lineup, de Nysschen has given us something to look forward to courtesy of a new performance sedan. From the brief explanation of this car, which was used as a key example in explaining the validity of the new names, we learned that the new model will be a performance version of what is now the M sedan, and it will be powered by a "charged induction" 3.0-liter V6 producing more than 550 horsepower. The M's name will become the Q70, but as of right now, it isn't clear if this will be an IPL model or something else.Scroll down to read de Nysschen's response.Continue reading Infiniti takes to Facebook to explain model names, mentions 550-hp flagshipInfiniti takes to Facebook to explain model names, mentions 550-hp flagship originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 15:44:00 EST.
Quick Spin: 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI
Filed under: Sedan, Volkswagen, Diesel, Quick Spins Can you name a fun-to-drive sedan with a manual transmission that can transport five adults and their luggage comfortably while sipping fuel at the rate of 50 mpg? The answer is the Volkswagen Passat TDI - a German antonym for "range anxiety." The past forty years have seen the Volkswagen Passat evolve from a three-door hatchback with a 1.5-liter engine (sold as the Dasher in the States) to a four-door near-luxury sedan boasting a 4.0-liter W8 a decade ago. I'm making the case that today's reasonably priced diesel-burning 2.0-liter TDI is the best, and most sensible, Passat ever built. The turbocharged, direct-injected, 2.0-liter inline-four is a little stump puller. While only rated at 140 horsepower, it delivers 236 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm. Launching from a standstill - even with a full load - was uneventful and it pulled confidently under all driving conditions (even thought the acceleration numbers are far from impressive). According to the EPA, the Passat TDI earns 31 mpg city and 43 mpg highway - but not on my watch. My city average was more like 35 mpg and 50 mpg wasn't difficult to achieve on the highway at 70 mph. With an 18.5-gallon fuel tank, its cruising range is just short of the moon. Curiosity got the better of me one night, so I decided to run a 100-mile highway loop between Camarillo and Goleta on Southern California's coastal US 101. Following a few suggestions, I pumped the tires up from the recommended 32 psi to 42 psi (51 psi is the maximum on the sidewall of the all-season Continental ContiProContact tires), shut off the air conditioning and set cruise control at 60 mph on the highway. Driving at this "hypermiling" speed was painful, but it delivered an impressive 56.9 mpg according to the Passat's computer - that's a burn rate of just over one gallon per hour! The Passat's cabin is huge. Almost limousine-like in the second row, it easily swallowed two adults and three teenage soccer players (with all of the associated gear in the trunk) during a long drive to a weekend tournament. Nobody complained about room, and the air vents in the second row kept the atmosphere fresh. The cabin appointments on the 6MT model, Volkswagen's SE trim, aren't very luxurious. An upgrade to a sunroof, navigation, leather upholstery or even an iPod interface requires acceptance of the dual-clutch DSG automatic, which brings with it lower fuel economy and a less engaging driving experience. That's very frustrating. On the odd side of things, the clutch pedal transmitted an awful lot of engine vibration to the driver's left foot and I noticed an unnerving sound of fuel sloshing around inside the tank each time the sedan came to a stop (keep the radio on and passengers won't notice). Even thought the diesel is the perhaps the wisest choice in the Passat family, Volkswagen doesn't seem to want offer consumers any incentives to take one home. Unattractive lease and financing rates on the TDI often make its more expensive gasoline counterparts (or worse, its competitors) more attractive in the showroom. America's wildly fluctuating (but generally costlier) diesel fuel prices don't help, either. 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 14:59:00 EST. Chevy Camaro to be built in US once again
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Government/Legal, Plants/Manufacturing, Chevrolet, GM, UAW/Unions, CanadaGeneral Motors has announced that the next generation of the Chevrolet Camaro will once again be built in the United States, specifically at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Lansing, MI. The current Camaro has been assembled in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, since its introduction in 2010. The automaker cites "lower capital investment and improved production efficiencies" as key reasons for the move - indeed, the Camaro is the only rear-wheel-drive vehicle made in Oshawa; the Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS are currently manufactured there, and the upcoming Chevrolet Impala will join the front-wheel-drive group in 2013. Meanwhile, the Lansing facility currently produces two rear-wheel-drive vehicles - the Cadillac ATS and CTS - which makes the Camaro a natural fit. The Canadian Auto Workers Union is, as expected, none too pleased by the "callous and poorly thought-out" announcement, "reacting in anger and frustration" according to a statement. CAW National President Ken Lewenza added, "General Motors has once again shown a complete and utter disregard for its workers and also Canadians in general, whose tax dollars kept the company out of bankruptcy." The CAW says that "GM must replace lost Camaro production on a one-to-one basis." The automaker's own statement says it will "continue to meet the production targets agreed to with the Canadian and Ontario governments during the 2009 restructuring." In any case, production of the current Camaro will continue in Ontario until the next-gen model is ready to go on sale sometime within the next few years. Feel free to read statements from both General Motors and the CAW below.Continue reading Chevy Camaro to be built in US once againChevy Camaro to be built in US once again originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Dec 2012 14:17:00 EST.
