Ford of Europe presents Snowkhana One Filed under: Motorsports, Etc., Videos, Ford, Humor We haven't seen a Ken Block Gymkhana since the infamous Ford Fiesta assaulted the streets of San Francisco over the summer, but Ford of Europe wanted to make sure we weren't going through withdrawals. For our viewing pleasure, Ford's team from across the pond created the stop-motion Snowkhana One using a scaled-down version of Block's car, someone's garage and a lot of free time. In the video, the rally car proves that the Abominable Snowman, a Stormtrooper and even the local constabulary are no match for the No. 43 Fiesta; even Santa makes a cameo in this video. A year-and-a-half ago, he struck a deal with Amp Electric Vehicles to send 1,000 EVs to the island nation. That won't happen now. He's also navigated a $39-million deal for 150 EVs, with similar results. Undeterred, Gislason's and his cohorts today founded the Icelandic EV Association. It's the latest move to make Iceland one of the most EV-ready countries in the world.Gislason told AutoblogGreen that, "Since the EV revolution is just starting in Iceland, we have a unique opportunity to do things by the book - which we are writing." At the start of 2012, there were 11 electric vehicles in Iceland, Gislason said, along with just a few Level 1 charging stations. Today, there are "more than double" that many EVs in Iceland and proponents have started to set up Level 2 chargers, Gislason said. "Strangely, but fortunately, we are the only player on the market setting up the infrastructure. We are therefore trying to get everyone on board to set up one system that will be open for everyone to sell access to," he said. "This will benefit the EV owners because they can choose which energy provider they want to subscribe to in the future and get access to all the charging poles and fast charging stations available. In Norway, there is a problem because the EV revolution started without control and EV owners have to subscribe to more than one company to be able to get access to enough charging stations to feel secure," he said. If the Icelandic EV Association's plans work, Gislason said he expects to import about 300 EVs next year. His ever-enthusiastic spirit allows him to see this in a positive way. The publication says the four-cylinder sedan now sits at the top of its class after testing, beating out the Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry, while the V6 Accord is giving the Camry and Camry Hybrid serious competition in CR ratings. The Accord managed to improve its position thanks to its fuel economy, smooth CVT and driving characteristics, though testers also said the Accord boasts "one of the best driving positions available in its class." That's not to say there weren't a few sore spots. Consumer Reports found the sedan's optional Lane Watch system to be gimmicky given the tech doesn't cover the driver's side blind spot. While the full test results are currently available on the CR web site, the report will also show up in the February issue of the magazine. Expect to see it hit news stand on December 27. As you may recall, the supercar manufacturer recently made its way through insolvency largely unscathed and is already back to building Apollo models. But it looks like that isn't all the company is up to. The team at WorldCarFans managed to lay its mitts on a trademark drawing that shows what looks to be an evolution of the Gumpert Tornante by Touring Concept that debuted at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Designers have scrapped the concept's split rear window in favor louvered back glass, and the vehicle's exhaust seems to have received a substantial revision as well. While it's unclear exactly what sort of drivetrain the production Tornante will offer, it's concept predecessor came packing a twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 engine producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 horsepower. A recent study by MarketsAndMarkets found that global spending on so-called smart-transportation initiatives will quadruple to more than $102 billion in 2018 from almost $27 billion this year. Spending on communication systems that do everything from conveying local traffic levels to providing parking and traffic-ticketing information, all of which will be designed to make the roads safer and more efficient, will jump by about 24 percent a year during the next few years, the study says. In August, the US Department of Transportation announced plans for what will be the world's largest real-world test of smart-vehicles, including vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I communications. The test will include almost 3,000 General Motors and Ford cars, buses and trucks in the Ann Arbor, MI, area. These efforts are geared towards safety advancements that help vehicles to avoid collisions as well as improving traffic communications in general. Those include a spate of exterior aerodynamic tweaks, including a front splitter, unique rockers, a rear spoiler and a lower rear diffuser on the 3 Series. Likewise, 5 Series buyers can look forward to optioning up their sedans with an M Performance rear diffuser and a carbon fiber front splitter. Outside, the 3 Series can also be gussied up with a couple of graphics packages, but the kit isn't just for show. Owners can snap up a sharper suspension kit for the 3 Series comprised of new coil springs that lower the car by 20 millimeters compared to the factory bits. Special 20-inch double-spoke wheels can also be had wrapped in Pirelli P Zero runflat rubber, though we're more excited to hear about the optional Brembo brake system. With four-piston calipers in the front pressing on 14.6-inch discs and two-piston calipers in the rear mated with 13.6 inch rotors, the hardware should add some serious stopping performance. Owners with a set of 5 Series keys in their pockets can also enjoy a new free-breathing exhaust as well as M Performance 20-inch wheels. That sweet M Performance electronic steering wheel we recently saw in action has officially made its way to the option sheet for the 2013 3 Series, and 5 Series buyers can snap up a non-electronic flat-bottom piece for themselves. A handful of General Motors assembly line robots are picking up some extra shifts at Santa's workshop this year wrapping presents. In addition to stuffing and wrapping boxes, the robots' duties also include spot welding labels onto the gifts (who even knew that was possible?). The work looks boring and monotonous, but at least these GM robots were able to find a second job. | Posted: 18 Dec 2012 01:53 PM PST  Official: Carbon Motors strikes back with new police truck Filed under: Government/Legal, Police/EmergencyCarbon Motors couldn't have picked a better time to get into the police car business with the departure of the Ford Crown Victoria leaving the market wide open, but with its purpose-built E7 police sedan still a few more years away from production, the Indiana-based company decided to launch another vehicle for first responders. There was a big demand to get something out quick, and that something is the TX7. Designed to be more of a multipurpose vehicle, the TX7 is able to fill many roles making it a more practical expense for police agencies. Unlike the E7, the TX7 is based on an existing powertrain and chassis, which allowed Carbon to develop the truck in less than eight months, but the company has not yet announced where it got these components from. What we do know is that a diesel V8 producing at least 300 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque is under the hood, and it is paired to a four-wheel-drive system and a six-speed automatic transmission. Referred to as a "multi mission vehicle," the TX7 is designed to be more practical than a standard SUV police vehicle while costing hundreds of thousands of dollars less than a full assault-type SWAT truck. Carbon spokesman Stacy Dean Stephens said that most specialized police vehicles, like SWAT trucks, are not used on a frequent basis, but the TX7's 10-passenger capacity makes it a versatile vehicle for first responders. "Command post vehicles and SWAT trucks can sit around unused for most of the year," Stephens said. "The TX7 can perform many different tasks while costing far less... including being a command post following natural disasters or acting as a prisoner transport." The TX7 is not available with the heavier armor meaning it won't be able to be used in all extreme situations, but Stephens also said it's a much less imposing vehicle than a SWAT vehicle, which he says can "scare the community." Europe's largest automaker is adding PHEV versions of the Porsche Panamera and 918 Spyder to the electric-drive vehicles set to debut in 2014, Reuters reports, citing an interview with VW electric-car head Rudolf Krebs. VW, which will also start selling PHEV versions of the Golf, Passat and Audi Q7 SUV in 2014, will spend a "considerable" percentage of its $9.13 billion annual research and development budget on electric-drive advancements. VW started selling its first hybrid, a gas-electric version of the Touareg SUV, in 2010, 13 years after Toyota introduced the Prius. But the company is looking to take advantage of what IHG Automotive says will be an eightfold annual increase in PHEV sales between 2013 and 2018. Volkswagen was among the group of large German automakers that recently launched the "Clean Diesel. Clearly Better" campaign to push for clean-diesel sales in the US. | Posted: 18 Dec 2012 01:06 PM PST  Report: Volkswagen to resume Routan minivan production in 2013 after all Filed under: Minivan/Van, Plants/Manufacturing, Chrysler, Volkswagen Last week, we reported that production of the Chrysler-based Volkswagen Routan minivan had been halted since July, and its future seemed grim. It appears now that the Volkswagen minivan will live on, with production resuming in 2013. According to an Automotive News report, the Routan will be unchanged for the 2013 model year (surprise!) and continue to be produced at the Windsor, Ontario facility, where Chrysler assembles the Town and Country. Questions over the future of the Routan have stemmed from its poor sales performance. Just 8,882 Routans were built through December 15 of this year - a drop of 38 percent over the same time period last year - and 9,923 Routans were sold in the US through the end of November, which is down 17 percent compared to that same stretch of time in 2011. The contract that VW has with Chrysler is set to end with the conclusion of the 2014 model year. Nether company has announced intentions to extend that contract. As part of Volkswagen's plan to sell 800,000 vehicles by 2018, the minivan seems less and less a part of that strategy. Far more effective, would be a large, three-row crossover, to compete with the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot, and we'll be seeing such a vehicle at the Detroit Auto Show next mont. Pues el pasado día 13 aparecían en al registro de diseños europeo una serie de dibujos registrados a favor de Touring Superleggera, de lo que parece ser la versión de producción del Gumpert Tornante. Respecto al prototipo visto en Ginebra el año pasado, la cúpula trasera gana un montón de aberturas a modo de persiana, con las que aliviar el calor del vano motor, mientras que la parte posterior se corta "a lo Kamm style", para mejorar la aerodinámica, ganando unos nuevos grupos ópticos. En la parte frontal, la boca de admisión parece más pequeña y el splitter se hace tridimensional. Se nos hace muy curioso que el diseño esté registrado por Touring Superleggera en lugar de por Gumper directamente. Gallois es un directivo de 68 años que cuenta con la confianza del ejecutivo de Francois Hollande, para el que ha realizado algunos estudios e informes económicos de varias compañías en apuros. La rama inversora de PSA tuvo que ser salvada de urgencia por el gobierno francés, ante una situación complicadísima en la que estaba metida, ante la incapacidad de financiarse a través de la venta de bonos, al estar calificada como "bono basura" por los organismos encargados auditarla. Gallois será "el ojo" del gobierno francés ante los movimientos de reestructuración que PSA está planificando junto con sus socios de General Motors. | Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:21 PM PST  Quick Spin: 2013 Jaguar XJ AWD Filed under: Sedan, Jaguar, Luxury, Quick Spins Even though this year's winter has gotten off to an abnormally slow start for most of North America, Jaguar has shown the world it means business by launching its all-new Instinctive All Wheel Drive system in Montreal, Canada. Designed primarily for consumers in the Northern US and Canada, Jaguar put us on the same snowy, slushy and icy roads that many of its buyers will have to deal with. Rather than making declawed versions of the XJ and XF, Jag says this system enhances the performance abilities of its sedans when desired while still making them as fun to drive as their rear-wheel-drive counterparts. We had a chance to test out both the XF AWD and XJ AWD, but we spent most of our time behind the wheel of the flagship XJ, driving it on the open roads as well as a few closed courses. Considering the lengthy and convoluted history of the Jaguar brand - including a stint as a member of Ford's defunct Premier Automotive Group alongside Volvo and Aston Martin - it is rather surprising that the automaker is just now getting around to introducing an all-wheel-drive system intended for widespread use, but the new Instinctive AWD will finally allow the XF, XJ and other future products to better compete against the likes of Mercedes-Benz 4Matic, BMW xDrive and Audi Quattro. In the XJ, Jaguar expects the AWD models to account for around 40 percent of the product mix nationwide and a little bit more (50 percent) for the XF, but in the northern states, it expects around 80 percent of XF sales to be AWD variants. Instinctive AWD is rear-biased and operates as full rear-wheel drive in good weather, but when the road conditions turn slick, the system can split engine power 50:50 between front and rear axles using a center transfer case. In addition to driving the XJ AWD on the street, we had a chance to test out its abilities at the Mecaglisse motorsports complex - about an hour and a half north of Montreal. On separate tracks normally used for motorcycle and rally car racing, Jaguar let us test out the XJ AWD and XF AWD for accelerating, braking and cornering on snow- and ice-covered asphalt and dirt tracks. Both of these circuits demonstrated the two different attitudes these cars can exhibit. With Winter mode on, the system does a great job of nannying the driver making sure the car keeps its footing and remains on the road, but staying true to Jag's motorsports heritage, the system can also be set to Dynamic to improve the performance of the car in bad weather giving the driver fewer safety nets to rely on. The complex also had courses set up for snowy slaloms and an icy, drift-friendly skidpad. Rather than being a part of an expensive option package, each AWD version of the XJ and XF will be an individual model. This means that getting the added benefit of all-wheel traction doesn't require buyers to opt for other unrelated packages (such as a cold-weather or technology package, for example) that some automakers force on buyers. On the XJ, AWD is offered on both regular and long-wheelbase XJL models. Neither the XJ nor the XF architectures were originally designed to accept all-wheel-drive, so Jaguar made extensive changes to parts of the car most people will never see, including the suspension, front floorboard and even some of the engine components. For example, to keep the engine low in the engine bay for optimal balance, the front driveshaft is actually built into the oil pan. All of the changes and added AWD parts increase the XJ's curb by less than 300 pounds. As the new base engine in the XJ, Instinctive AWD can only be had on cars equipped with the new 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. While this engine lacks the throaty exhaust note of the 5.0-liter V8, at virtually no point can its performance be faulted especially when factoring in the car's curb weight of just over two tons. The XJ AWD comes standard with Continental all-season tires, but Jaguar equipped our test cars with Pirelli M+S winter tires. While this certainly helped the cars handle better in the snow, Jaguar representatives noted this was done so to abide by Quebec law - and besides, these tires are available as an option. I was able to learn firsthand just how far the system allows the car to be pushed, too. In my first lap around the snow-covered off-road course in Winter mode, the Instinctive AWD and its associated systems interjected frequently to slow the car and help keep it on its intended path. On the ensuing laps, in Dynamic mode, things got a little hairier. With an instructor riding shotgun shouting driving instructions like a rally car co-pilot (to fully exhibit the car's potential in a short period of time), I spent most of the next two laps doing my best trying to go as quickly as possible while keeping the car on the track. I almost made it. On one portion, the surface was too icy and the dirt embankment just a bit too close.
