Este nuevo tipo de refrigerante para motores de combustión interna es el único que cumple las nuevas normativas contra el cambio climático impuestas por la Unión Europea. La alarma saltaba la semana pasada, tras publicarse dudas sobre su toxicidad. Daimler publicó una serie de resultados tras varias pruebas de accidente que realizaron con vehículos Mercedes-Benz el pasado mes de agosto. En ellas, dicho líquido refrigerante se había mezclado con el aceite del compresor del aire acondicionado. Tras prender fuego esa mezcla al tocar el colector de escape del motor, se produjeron una serie de gases muy tóxicos que invadieron el habitáculo del coche. And while it was somewhat shocking to hear that the aging ZR1 actually managed to narrowly walk away as the winner of this particular scrap, something else interesting happened during the dust up. Motor Trend called on pro driver Randy Pobst to thrash the two bruisers around Laguna Seca, and thrash he did. Pobst managed to bolt out a time of 1:33.70 in the ZR1, besting the old record of 1:33.99 set by Chris Winkler some three years ago. Winkler managed the task in a 2010 Dodge Viper ACR. Pobst managed to pull down a 1:35.77 in the SRT Viper GTS, making it the sixth-fastest car M/T has ever put through its paces at Laguna Seca. Don't shed a tear for the terror from SRT, though - the 2013 Viper is still quicker than hardware like the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lexus LFA and Nissan GT-R. Unsurprisingly, the record-breaking story has triggered defensive posturing from the SRT camp, with none other than brand boss Ralph Gilles leaving comments on his Twitter feed like "There is a lot more left in the car, Randy has always struggled with the Viper" and "We've tested both cars at several tracks and never seen a gap like that. Many drivers needlessly fear the Viper. If you don't, you just might wind up with scene like the one in the video below on your hands. In it, some sprightly soul decides to eschew the beaten path for a quick frolicking over hill and dale in the luxury leviathan. The grounds will never be the same. Grass, mud and water are all sent scattering as the Rolls-Royce proceeds to pound the earth into submission. There's also a few smoky burnouts thrown in for good measure. We can appreciate any shenanigans with a high-dollar automobile that don't end in wrinkled sheetmetal. | Posted: 17 Dec 2012 05:01 PM PST  Official: Plug-in hybrids outselling pure EVs in California Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) appear to have outsold battery electric vehicles in California by about a two-to-one margin since the Toyota Prius Plug-in started US sales earlier this year, according to the state's Center for Sustainable Energy. To date, the state has given out about 7,400 clean-vehicle rebates for EV owners, compared to about 6,500 for PHEV owners. That sounds like a clean with for EVs, but that lead is a result of virtually no PHEV rebates given out until this March. Since then, just 2,800 rebates have been distributed to owners of EVs such as the Nissan Leaf. PHEV rebate numbers were helped by the fact that the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in became eligible for them in February. The numbers are a barometer of US demand for electric-drive vehicles because California is the most populous US state and by far the largest US market for alt-fuel vehicles. Through November, Toyota sold almost 11,400 Prius Plug-ins, while General Motors sold almost 21,000 Volts, compared to the 8,330 Nissan Leafs sold this year. Additionally, Ford sold 1,259 of its C-Max Energi PHEVs during that model's first full month of sales. Making things even more difficult will be the fact that all coupes, convertible and sedans will get a Q prefix while all crossovers and SUVs will be prefixed with QX. Further muddying the waters, previous engine displacement monikers will be replaced by a double-digit number "representing hierarchy within the range." Put less simply, the slot in the lineup currently held by the G Sedan will be called Q50 while the G Coupe and Convertible will be called Q60. Q70 will replace the M Sedan at the top of the automaker's lineup of cars. On the truck side, the range-topping QX is now the QX80. Sitting below is the QX70, which was formerly the FX, then the QX60 that used to be the JX and finally the QX50, which was but is no longer the EX. Qonfused yet? Getting back to the G... excuse us, Q50, this is the new sedan that Infiniti had previously announced would be debuting at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Best we can tell, this is a replacement for the old G Sedan, and it will sit below the currently available G Coupe and G Convertible, which will be renamed Q60. The Q50 will be the first model from Infiniti to fall into the new Q-based naming convention, with the rest of the automaker's lineup falling into place as 2014 models are announced. Infiniti said on a conference call that this move was necessary as the brand branches out beyond the United States. Ray LaHood and the US Department of Transportation could put this legislation to the vote by the end of the month to require all new vehicles in 2014 to be equipped with cameras in an effort to make cars safer. LaHood delayed this vote back in February. According to The Detroit News, adding such a camera would cost up to $203 to install on vehicles without an appropriate display screen and up to $88 for cars that already have a useable display. This relatively small cost could help reduce the number of people backed over each year, which accounts for around 300 deaths (including 100 children under the age of five) and injure close to 16,000 people annually. It makes sense to shift tactics, since Castignetti himself said Nissan was, "a little bit arrogant as a manufacturer when we went to the 50-state rollout." The problem, Nissan now says, was that the company made the all-electric car available in places where there was no infrastructure - or not enough - to welcome new buyers. As Leaf production ramps up in Tennessee, the way the all-electric vehicle is marketed will shift from a "here it is, come and get it" strategy to one where potential buyers are specifically targeted. Castignetti told AN that Nissan is "telling our dealers, 'You don't market this car traditionally. You don't put it in the newspaper. You need to go and find the electric car buyer in your market.'" Nissan has to hope this will work, since the company has talked about doubling Leaf sales once Tennessee production is up and running. Currently, somewhere around 1,000 units (sometimes much lower, sometimes up to 1,500) are sold in the US every month. And in an effort to give the AWD models a bit more presence, the all-season Dodge sedan will be getting a new sport package for the 2013 model year. The AWD Sport pack - available on SXT, SXT Plus, R/T and R/T Plus trims - gets you a raft of visual upgrades including a gloss black grille, unique 19-inch wheels and a body-color rear spoiler. Inside, the package adds paddle shifters and sport seats in either cloth or leather, depending on trim. This Sport pack retails for $1,395 on SXT models with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, and $1,195 on R/T cars with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. As part of the new package, the eight-speed automatic transmission also receives a more aggressive sport setting. See, the driver of this go-kart must think that he's piloting an actual street-legal motor vehicle. That has to be the explanation as why someone would be crazy enough to take a go-kart on busy city streets. The poster of this video was on his way to Sydney, Australia's Kingsford-Smith Airport, when he spotted this very brave - or very stupid - individual. We're leaning towards the latter. At one point, the kart driver appears to either nearly lose control of his diminutive vehicle or intentionally try to spin it, in either case, he almost careens into oncoming traffic. This video should serve as a reminder as to why we have sensible traffic laws and regulations for motor vehicles. Apparently the Sydney police agree, and are reportedly keeping an eye out for the driver. We hope this guy made it to work safely, but really, this is a little ridiculous. | Posted: 17 Dec 2012 02:34 PM PST  The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette peeks its nose out from an unlikely corner Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Chevrolet What looks to be an official General Motors service bulletin for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette has leaked out onto the internet thanks to spy shooter Chris Doane's Facebook page. The image above clearly shows what we assume is the nose of the next-generation sports car - more specifically, the front brake cooling deflector kit installation information. From the line drawing, it appears as if the 2014 Corvette will feature a familiar front profile with tall fenders that slope inward to the hood. Speaking of the hood, aggressive air inlets dominate the bodywork toward the front. The car's trademark gills look to have grown in size as well, with a dramatic inset tucked just behind the front wheel well. From what we can see, the 2014 Corvette will abandon its low and wide headlamp arrays for more vertical pieces that extend well into the lower fascia. The face looks good, even in black and white. | Posted: 17 Dec 2012 01:48 PM PST  Video: Jaguar lets first outsiders drive new F-Type Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Jaguar, UK, Luxury What do you do when you're an automaker with an all-new and brand-defining sports car, one of them with a supercharged V8 cranking out 495 horsepower? You let proven race drivers test them out on track and on the road. And what do you do if you're Jaguar and you're in that situation? Why, naturally, you make a video of it. That's how we get footage of racers Martin Brundle, Justin Bell and Christian Danner being choppered into the UK's Snetterton track to test the V6-equipped Jaguar F-Type S prototype. Then when they're finished with kerb-lined apexes, they take the V8 S prototype out onto the roads to run it through hedge-lined apexes. According to one of them, "very fast, very nimble, great engine" is what will soon be headed our way. Es una berlina compacta con muchos puntos en común con los SEAT Toledo y Skoda Rapid, si bien cuenta con detalles específicos que marcan su personalidad. Con el comienzo de la comercialización, Volkswagen ha publicado un vídeo promocional en el que podemos ver al New Santana más en detalle realizando una especial ruta entre Alemania y China. Es un producto realmente importante para la marca dado que se ha convertido en el preferido de taxistas y flotas de muchos ayuntamientos. En total se han vendido sólo en China más de cuatro millones de unidades, incluyendo los Santana2000, Santana3000 y Santana Vista. La oferta de motores del New Santana gira entorno al pequeño bloque 1.4i 16v de 90 CV y al 1.6 MPI de 110 CV. Naast G-klasses en Lexii zijn ze niet vies van een Toyotaatje. Wald had een keiharde "FIRST!" met hun GT86-bodykit in juli.
