Yesterday on a stage on the Encore Theater at The Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, Chevrolet revealed its NASCAR SS, the race car that will contest next year's Sprint Cup series. A lot of people are talking about this car, and doing so well beyond the NASCAR fraternity - we were told that 30 minutes after it began the car became the number one trending topic on Twitter. The car looks great, Jeff Gordon showed up for some banter, everyone who was there applauded, the assembled drivers said the the right things. But it was at lunch after the event with Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America, and Jim Caldwell, US vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports, that we learned what we really wanted to know. That story centered on the car that the NASCAR Chevrolet SS heralds, the production Chevrolet SS that will go on sale late next year. Opinion: Ex-Michigan governor says 'get over it,' and just support electric vehicle production

Granholm, the former governor of Michigan, made clear in an op-ed in the Huffington Post (like AutoblogGreen, an AOL site) that she remains all for using federal funds to push electric-vehicle technology and production. Pictured above, is Granholm learning about plug-in vehicles in 2010 in Detroit. Granholm, whose "home" state (she's originally from Canada) is Ground Zero for the US auto industry, told folks like Rush Limbaugh and Cavuto, the Fox Business Network anchor and ardent opponent to cars like the Chevrolet Volt, telling them to "get over it...and support American products and American jobs." Granholm, who was Michigan governor from 2003 to 2011, said that the $1.35 billion the state received in lithium-ion battery grants supported as many as 63,000 jobs and she is lobbying for further tax breaks and incentives to spur both electric-drive vehicle production and adoption. Ford recalling 89k 2013 Fusion and Escape models over engine fires, urges owners to park their cars
Filed under: Sedan, Recalls, Safety, Crossover, FordFord has announced a recall of 89,153 vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engines over the possibility of overheating and, in some instances, fires starting in the engine compartment. The brand new 2013 Fusion accounts for 15,833 of the affected models, the other 73,320 being the 2013 Escape. This is the fourth time the recently launched Escape has been recalled, and this is the third time the recall has involved the 1.6-liter engine. In a statement issued Friday, Ford confirmed that there have been new reports of these engines overheating, resulting in fires while the engine is running. No injuries have been reported in conjunction with this issue, and Ford states that the affected vehicles' instrument clusters may display warning notifications reading, "Engine Power Reduced to Lower Temps" or "Engine over temp, stop safely." Ford is currently working on a repair procedure and will notify owners as soon as a fix is found. In the meantime, the automaker is urging owners to stop driving these affected vehicles and to contact a Ford dealer to arrange for alternate transportation at no charge. Owners in the United States may call 866.436.7332 for assistance with securing a different set of wheels (888.222.7814 in Canada). Fusion and Escape models equipped with 2.5-liter naturally aspirated and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines are not affected by this recall. Fisker seeks financial partner after "tough year"

Speaking with TheDetroitBureau.com, Fisker went on to say that he'd, "like to see if we can get something done next year." As of this writing, Fisker has declined invitations to divulge which companies those partnership conversations are happening with. If one cared to hazard a guess though, BMW and General Motors - both loosely associated with Fisker in past dealings - might be good front-runners. The urge to seek a tie-up with a larger, more stable entity does not come out of the blue for the independent Fisker. The reputation of the company's Karma model has been rocked by battery fires and a scathing review from Consumer Reports earlier this year, and now its production schedule is being held hostage by a battery shortage because its supplier, A123 Systems, has gone bankrupt. More significantly still, the company's plans to launch a second, more affordable Atlantic model have been stymied due to the US Department of Energy putting the brakes on a promised low-interest loan to the automaker. This isn't the first time that the Fisker founder has admitted that all is not completely rosy, certainly, but there does seem to be a more pragmatic tone this time around than in interviews past. XP Technology sues DOE over advanced vehicle loan rejection
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Hydrogen, Manufacturing/Plants, Legislation and Policy The US Department of Energy has been sued in US court by a company that it denied a loan to in its Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program. San Francisco-based XP Technology is charging the DOE with "corruption and negligence" for the way it handled the approval for loan process. XP Technology is looking for funding to develop its battery and hydrogen fuel-cell powered car that has body panels made from expanded foam. The compact car would weight around 1,500 pounds, less than half the weight of similarly sized electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf. It's powered by small, removable cartridges that can be quickly swapped by owners or recharged at home. XP Technology has been granted several patents covering the technology inside the vehicle, but it's yet to build the car. This is the fourth time the company has been turned down for DOE loans through the ATVM program. Two of the loan applications were for $25 million and two were for $45 million; two other applications are still pending. The company says that it was previously given a $1 million grant from a previous DOE program to help develop a hydrogen storage system used in its vehicle. So far, funds from the $25 billion ATVM program have only gone to Ford, Nissan, Tesla and Fisker. XP is alleging that other startup electric vehicle makers such as Bright Automotive and Aptera Motors had their application reviews intentionally stalled to force them out of business and protect favored players. Bright Automotive and Aptera Motors have both filed for bankruptcy. Published reports are also cited in the lawsuit criticizing other DOE loans including the now-bankrupt solar energy company Solyndra. XP is soliciting other companies to join it in the lawsuit. In 2009, when the first DOE loan was rejected, XP was looking for support from the public. XP's latest complaint was filed recently with the US Court of Federal Claims, and was denied. Report: Nissan outlines Nismo's expansion and credentials
Filed under: Aftermarket, Performance, NissanNissan is reportedly working toward turning its Nismo arm into a legitimate sub-brand. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, the Japanese automaker plans to pattern its performance wing after Mercedes-Benz's AMG, which means that moving forward, every vehicle with a Nismo badge will also pack a sizable jump in performance. Engineers will work to sharpen the suspension and brakes while offering more horsepower and revised aesthetics. In addition, Nissan will seek to burnish Nismo's credibility and visibility by putting forth bigger efforts in various motorsports series. While speaking in an interview, Nissan global marketing boss Simon Sproule noted that Japanese brands have historically missed out on exploiting their performance history. Much of that struggle has come in the form of a lack of consistency from brands like Lexus and Infiniti with their F-Sport and IPL efforts, respectively. Sproule says Nissan is now looking at a line of low-volume vehicles, the first of which will be the Juke Nismo set to launch next year. While the executive declined to comment on which products could be next, he stressed each vehicle will have to meet a few criteria before being branded as Nismo models. Those include significant design changes inside and out as well as a 10-percent bump in horsepower and different ride and handling calibrations. Among the possible visual cues for Nismo models? Red mirror caps as well as more aggressive grilles and front fascias. Forza Horizon welcomes December Car Pack with Halo-inspired Raptor [w/video]

The December IGN Car Pack features seven all new cars ranging from the lusty 2012 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and the 2012 Aston Martni DBS to a 1971 AMC Javelin AMX. The pack even boasts a few toys for the off-road minded, including a Halo-themed Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and a Hummer H1 Alpha Open Top. Those are fun and all, but we're just as intrigued by the prospect of getting our virtual hands on the 2006 Ford GTX1. That's the machine built on the bones of the legendary Ford GT but with a body by Mark Gerish of Genaddi Design. Think of it as what would happen if the good parts of SEMA got spilled on a GT. But, we'd be lying if we said the star of the December pack was anything other than the McLaren F1 shown above. That car's still the stuff of teenage fantasies all these years later, and you can whip it around the virtual hills and valleys of Colorado. Official: Diesel-powered Mazda6 going racing in Grand-Am Series
Filed under: Motorsports, Sedan, Mazda, Diesel The diesel version of the 2014 Mazda6 won't be hitting North American showrooms until the middle of next year, but we won't have to wait that long to see the car in action. Mazda will enter its midsize sedan in the new Grand-Am GX class with a Skyactiv-D clean diesel engine under the hood, and the car will make its racing debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 26. This will be the first time in the race's 60-year history that a diesel-powered car has competed in the 24-hour race. We first heard about the 2.2-liter turbocharged Skyactiv-D race engine back in June, but we now know it will used in the Mazda6 and we have a little bit better of an idea of power output. Developed in conjunction with SpeedSource, the clean diesel racer is said to produce more than 400 horsepower using many of the same components that will be found on the passenger version of the car. The newly created GX class will race against the Daytona Prototypes and GT class cars, and its goal is to provide a race class for alternative fuels and technologies. En cuanto llega el otoño, o cuando falta poco la presentación de un nuevo modelo, éstos bajan en manada a España. Ya sea por la Costa del Sol y Sierra Nevada o Cataluña, debido a la presencia de IDIADA, todos suelen andar por nuestro país en estas fechas. Después del trío de Porsche 918 Spyder o del McLaren P1, el nuevo Mercedes Clase S es el tercer prototipo de la semana en ser cazado por las carreteras cercanas a IDIADA. En esta ocasión no oiremos un V8 rugir, ni veremos los coches pasar a todo trapo para huir del "espía" [WillLilo, visto lo de esta semana, me plantearía hacerlo de manera pro...], sólo veremos a unos cuantos Clase S deslizarse de manera silenciosa. Si ya conocemos gran parte de su paquete de seguridad, aún no se conocen los detalles de las motorizaciones, por ejemplo. Official: Tesla adds replacement battery pack costs to price increase details
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors Price increases are common in the automotive industry so the recent $2,500 jump in prices for upcoming Tesla Model S vehicles wasn't exactly a surprise. Still, most vehicle MSRPs don't go up two-and-a-half grand, and so to explain why the price for the award-winning electric vehicle was so "high," George Blankenship, Tesla vice president of worldwide sales and ownership experience, has written on the company blog with numbers and details. For example, Blankenship says that inflation has gone up 8.75 percent since Tesla first mentioned a $57,400 base price for the Model S in 2009. Compared to a flat 8.75 price increase (which would be $5,000), the $2,500 jump could be seen as relatively reasonable. Even more reasonable is that anyone on the fence about a Model S can still order through the end of the year and get the current, $57,400 base price. There are other changes (heated front seats will now be standard, for example), which you can read about here, so you're not just getting charged more. There are also new warranty and battery replacement costs and options. On top of the included four-year, 50,000-mile warranty, you can buy a four-year, 50,000-mile extension for $2,500. You can also buy a extension to the prepaid Tesla Ranger program. Details on how, exactly, these extensions will work (e.g., what is the deadline to buy them?), have not been announced. Perhaps the biggest surprises are the low costs for replacement batteries: $8,000 for the 40-kWh battery, $10,000 for the 60-kWh and $12,000 for the 85-kWh pack. It sounds like you will need to buy this "warranty" soon, and then it "will provide you a new battery anytime after the end of the eighth year." We are curious to learn more about the math and expected rate of uptake on this, because it would be flatly shocking that an 85-kWh pack costs just $12,000, even eight years from now. Canadians, your price increase for the Model S is $2,600 and Europeans will learn "very soon" what their new, higher costs will be. Motorsports: Ferrari fails to take F1 driver's title from Vettel on questionable pass
Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, Racing On November 25, Sebastian Vettel took seventh place at the Brazilian Gran Prix, earning him enough points to take the 2012 Formula One Driver's Championship. It wouldn't be an F1 season finale without some drama, though, and this season, it came in the form of allegations by Ferrari that the Red Bull driver made an illegal pass under a yellow light. Ferrari is looking into on-board footage that may show Vettel passing Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne, which would have resulted in a 20-second penalty if discovered during the race. If that had happened, it would have resulted in Vettel falling to eighth place, which would have caused him to lose the Driver's Championship by a single point to Fernando Alonso and the Ferrari team. Ferrari has asked the FIA to review the footage, but it is reportedly unlikely that the Formula One governing body will penalize Vettel. Durante una entrevista en el salón del automóvil de Los Angeles, Tony Posawatz admitió que la factoría de Michigan dejó de fabricar baterías destinadas al Fisker Karma. El efecto inmediato es que el stock de baterías que quedan no se usarán para la producción sino como recambios para hacer frente a posibles sustituciones en los modelos ya en circulación. Este parón se une al ya decidido del modelo más asequible de la marca, el Atlantic, que ha visto su producción pospuesta tras la congelación del préstamo de 529$ concedido a Fisker por el departamento de energía estadounidense. La bancarrota de A123 Systems, no ayuda a que el Atlantic vaya a ver la luz en breve; se habla de un inició de la producción a lo largo de 2014. A123 Systems, que se declaró en bancarrota el pasado mes de octubre, saldrá a subasta el próximo mes. Dos de los pujadores con más posibilidades son la firma china Wanxiang Group Corp y el grupo estadounidense Johnson Controls. Infiniti será el patrocinador principal de Red Bull Racing durante las cuatro próximas temporadas
Filed under: Renault, Infiniti, Competición El responsable de Infiniti en Fórmula 1, Andreaas Sigl, comentó la semana pasada que la marca se involucrarías todavía más en este deporte y en la escudería Red Bull. Y así es, la firma nipona ha firmado un acuerdo que la convierte en el patrocinador principal de Red Bull Racing por un periodo de cuatro años. A partir del año que viene la escudería pasará a llamarse Infiniti Red Bull Racing. Este acuerdo es un paso lógico ya que los equipos de ingenieros de ambas partes ya colaboran en diversos proyectos desde hace dos años. Este año, la escudería de Milton Keynes estuvo probando la pintura de Infiniti "Scratch Heal" que se arregla sola, mientras que par los tests de jóvenes pilotos se han utilizado monoplazas equipados de KERS desarrollados por Nissan-Infiniti. De manera acertada y clara, Carlos Ghosn ha decidido que los motores de Red Bull seguirán llamándose Renault, porque son tal, y no quiere que haya "confusión acerca de quién hace qué en el seno de la Alianza [Renault-Nissan]", declaró. Report: Senator calling for answers from Hyundai and Kia over MPG debacle
Filed under: Car Buying, Hyundai, KiaHyundai and Kia have already gone public with plans to make good on the inflated fuel economy claims scandal that has rocked both companies in recent weeks. But one US senator, Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), is skeptical that the general public will see much good from the proposal, and he's looking for answers. To recap: Hyundai/Kia have agreed to compensate owners of 900,000 affected vehicles for real versus previously claimed fuel mileage (as well as adding in a one-percent premium), by way of pre-loaded debit cards. It has been speculated that this payout could crest $100 million by the time the Korean automakers are done writing checks. Said Rockefeller to The Detroit News, "While I believe this is a positive step, I am concerned that many affected customers may not learn about the program or may find it burdensome to participate in the program." Rockefeller would reportedly like to see a monitoring system for the paybacks more clearly defined, with the goal being as many wronged car buyers as possible getting the recompense that they're due.
