The couple's Volvo XC90 was struck by a small aircraft coming in for a landing. Student pilot William Davis clipped the roof of the crossover with his plane's fixed landing gear, shattering glass in the vehicle and sending the plane sliding into a field. Davis' wife captured the whole event on film. Neither the pilot nor his instructor were harmed in the collision, though the Laudos were transported to a local area hospital for minor injuries.WPTV News Channel 5 reports the accident is the latest in a spate of incidents at the Northwest Regional Airport. In September, an instructor and student died in a crash shortly after takeoff, while October saw a pilot crash his biplane into a neighboring field. He was treated for minor injuries. Prior to that, a family of four died in a crash after taking off from the airfield. An instructor at the airport says the events are unrelated to each other. The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the latest crash. Posted: 06 Nov 2012 05:22 PM PST Study: Fuel economy numbers are increasing, but still have a long way to go to hit 54.5 Filed under: Green Culture, MPG The average fuel economy number for new, light duty vehicles sold in the US reached an all-time high of 24.1 miles per gallon in October, up from 23.8 mpg the previous month, according to a report released by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute. That equals a 4.0-mpg increase, or 20 percent, since October 2007, when researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle began collecting the data. The number comes from sales-weighted fuel economy calculated from monthly sales of individual models and city-highway fuel economy ratings from the EPA Fuel Economy Guide. It corresponds to a 17-percent reduction in fuel consumption per distance driven, Sivak said in a statement. The report also updated its national Eco-Driving Index, which estimates monthly greenhouse gas emissions per individual driver in the US. In August, the index reached .81, unchanged from July, but down 19 percent from October 2007. The number is based on vehicle fuel economy and distance driven and has a two-month lag from available published data. You can view the fuel economy graphs and data and the Eco-Driving Index. Filed under: Government/Legal, Hyundai, Kia First came Hyundai's and Kia's corporate admission of guilt about overstating fuel economy numbers, then the recompense, then the lawsuits. Now begins the process of gnawing on every one of the consequences. In case you've only just returned from the International Space Station, Hyundai and Kia have admitted that about a third of the cars they have sold over the past three years have advertised inflated EPA fuel mileage numbers. For instance, the highway mpg number for the 2013 Hyundai Accent isn't 40 mpg anymore, it's either 37 or 38 miles per gallon. The combined mpg for the Kia Soul can take a four mpg hit depending on the trim level. A piece in USA Today questions how the revelation will affect resale values for the Korean automakers, and the majority of opinions seems to be "not much." An analyst at Kelley Blue Book suggests there could be a short-term penalty, but that the impact might be mostly emotional, and industry watchers at the Institute for Crisis Management and ALG believe that Americans move on pretty quickly and the "absolute dollar" impact will be minimal. When Consumer Reports compared advertised highway mileage to actual mileage it received, it found discrepancies from 11 mpg more (for the Volkswagen Passat TDI) to one mpg less (for the Hyundai Elantra, coincidentally), and Hyundai and Kia each had three vehicles that were spot on, including the Sonata Hybrid that achieved the company's advertised 40 mpg. According to Automotive News, a territorial dispute over uninhabited islands have resulted in Chinese consumers rejecting vehicles from Toyota, Honda and Nissan in increasing numbers. Meanwhile, sales of General Motors cars and minivans in its largest market grew 14 percent in October, to 251,812. Ford moved 60,518 units in China, representing a 48-percent increase in sales compared to the same month a year ago. Meanwhile, Toyota, Honda and Nissan sales have all taken nosedives. Toyota reported that its sales fell 44 percent last month, following a 49-percent drop in September. The latter two companies both announced their worst month-to-month decline in sales, dating back to 2007 for Honda and 2008 for Nissan. Still yet to be announced are Volkswagen sales in China. The German automaker has been battling GM for the top sales spot in China this year, and it outsold GM last quarter for the first time in eight years. Whether you are for nuclear power or against it, one legacy of this technology will be the great lengths that the governments and power suppliers must go to dispose of the spent fuel and other byproducts. The San Onofre nuclear power station replaced its steam generator several years ago, but only now is it able to move the old generator to a secure disposal facility. The generator must be moved in four parts. Each section is roughly 50 feet long and 15 feet in diameter and requires a transportation method of epic proportions. The trailer specifically constructed for this move is 400 feet long, nearly 17-feet high and it will take three weeks to make the 830-mile trip from San Onofre to its Utah disposal site. For safety and security reasons, the route for the trips are undisclosed, though the first leg snakes its way through San Bernadino and Riverside counties. The generator parts will travel at night for minimal traffic, accompanied by California Highway Patrol. The whole rig weighs in at 700,000 pounds and can only travel at a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour. Though the generator is irradiated, standing next to the rig for an hour will only expose you to the same amount of radiation as a dentist's x-ray. An official from Southern California Edison says this special package could be the largest load ever to be moved such a distance distance. As our nation's nuclear powerplants age, motorists may see more impressive sights like this in the coming year. Posted: 06 Nov 2012 03:49 PM PST Official: Audi launches Black Edition models in UK Audi has unveiled Black Edition versions of the A6 and A7 in the UK. Each model will roll from the factory with a set of rotor-design wheels and feature a lower sports suspension borrowed from the company's S Line kit. Designers swapped out the standard grille, license plate surrounds and window trim for blacked-out pieces, and the cabins wear piano black accents. Black Edition models also offer up sport seats swaddled in Valcona leather. The packages will be available on A6 sedan and Avant models, as well as the A7 sportback. The Black Edition packages are based on the Audi S Line specification, which means tricks like navigation, audi drive select suspension, parking assist and LED tail lamps are all part of the party. Buyers in the UK can expect to see their vehicles be available for order this month, but will have to wait until early 2013 to take delivery. Prices start at 35,010 pounds for the A6 Sedan Black Edition and rack all the way up to 50,575 pounds for the A7 Sportback Black Edition. C.J. O'Donnell, who was recently named Ford's group marketing manager for electrification, told Plug In Cars that the Focus EV is not a so-called "compliance car." That's the term used for zero emission cars that are sold in limited numbers simply to meet California's the ZEV quotas. While the Focus EV is sold at just five percent of Ford's 4,000 US dealers today, the model's distribution will eventually be broadened to all 50 states, O'Donnell says. If your image of Brazil has anything to do with "The Girl from Ipanema" played by 1,001 Strings, you may be a little out of date. The country that will host the 2016 Summer Olympics has come a long way since the dawn of the bossa nova craze a half century ago, though it still has plenty of nagging problems left to deal with. The recent Sao Paulo Auto Show provided one clear clue as to how much things have changed in recent years. When I first visited Brazil 15 years ago, the vehicles available to Brazilian motorists were, for the most part, decades out of date - common practice among automakers like Ford, Volkswagen and General Motors, who would dump generations-old tooling into these backwater markets rather than anything close to new. Today, however, Brazilians motorists are likely to get the latest and greatest. Indeed, October's Sao Paulo show gave local buyers - and the rest of the world - a look at a number of all-new offerings, some designed specifically for the Portugese-speaking nations, others for global markets, such as the next-generation Ford Fiesta sedan. Following closely the form set by the BMW Concept Active Tourer that we snapped in Paris this year. The new small BMW has a revised roofline and A-pillar shape compared with the prototype vehicle we've seen testing in the past; not too surprising a revision as the vehicle transitions to something closer to its production form. These images also mark the first time that our spies in the field have observed twin exhaust pipes on the car, which may indicate that this is a higher-performance version of the 1 GT. Expectation is that the powertrain lineup for this car, which shares underpinnings with the next-generation of Mini, too, will be quite varied. Three- and four-cylinder engines are expected, most likely in 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter forms, along with a hybrid powertrain, too. Después de un retorno tranquilo a los rallies este otoño, Robert Kubica ha decidido subir el ritmo y competirá en dos rallies con un Citroën C4 WRC este mes de noviembre. Será todo un reto para el piloto que desea volver a correr en un coche realmente rápido. Después de dos victorias en Italia en septiembre, la elección más obvia para él era la de participar en el Rally di Como (Italia) y en el Rally du Var (Francia) para terminar laa temporada de recuperación. "Estoy impaciente por conducir un coche tan rápido y con tantos éxitos como el C4 WRC", explicaba Robert Kubica. Será su primera participación en el Rally di Como, mientras que ya lleva dos participaciones en el Rally du Var. El objetivo de Kubica es hacer más kilómetros y seguir mejorando en la categoría. El Rally di Como, que saldrá de Erba y dará la vuelta al lago de Como, se celebrará del 15 al 17 noviembre con 126 km de tramos cronometrados. Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Technology, Mazda, Rumormill There is a special place in our hearts reserved for the Mazda RX-7. Its screaming rotary engine made the '80s and '90s a time of high-revving fun. While Mazda continued the rotary with the four-door RX-8, the two are not the same car, and eventually the latter was phased out.The Motor Report is the latest outlet to crank up the rumormill over a return to Wankel power and an RX sports car for the troubled Japanese brand. According to TMR, a rotary engine could come back - and so could the RX-7 nameplate - albeit not overnight. The return of the RX-7 is said to be set for 2017, and the source quoted is none other than Mazda sports car boss Nobuhiro Yamamoto. Speaking with the press at a local launch of the updated MX-5 Miata, Yamamoto said the future RX-7 would have a curb weight close to that of the Toyota GT 86 (about 2,600 pounds), and have a larger emphasis on the driver's involvement. Yamamoto was also the powertrain chief for the JDM-market FD3S generation (1992-2002 model) and was extremely proud of that engine. Yamamoto reportedly says he would prefer a naturally aspirated version of that engine over any kind of forced induction solution, claiming that the 16X rotary engine that has been developed would be capable of 220kW (295 hp) in that configuration. The 16X was developed in 2007 but has yet to find its way into a production vehicle. 2017 would mark the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the rotary engine. Posted: 06 Nov 2012 01:31 PM PST Report: Suzuki could disappear from new car market quickly thanks to low inventory Filed under: Suzuki, Earnings/Financials Yesterday's announcement that American Suzuki has filed for bankruptcy is all but a death blow for the Japanese automaker's 246 US dealers, but if there's any good news coming out of the situation, it could be the fact that the whole process will likely be quick and painless rather than drawn out. WardsAuto is reporting that with the current inventory and average sales numbers so far this year, there figures to be about three months left for Suzuki's new-car business in the US given current sales rates. In October, Suzuki sold 2,023 units - a five percent increase over last year - but with just 5,549 left in inventory, it shouldn't take too long to wind down operations. Sales for the brand peaked 2007 with more than 100,000 units sold, but this year, Suzuki is barely on pace to reach a quarter of that amount, with just 21,188 units sold so far in 2012. In addition to poor sales, WardsAuto also notes that Suzuki faced problems due to its reliance on customers with subprime credit.
