La idea de esta encuesta nacía del anuncio de Volkswagen para el nuevo Golf, y curiosamente ha sido el Golf GTI el ganador de la encuesta, con una clara mayoría de votantes apostando por él. Por lo demás, en segundo lugar ha quedado clasificada mi proposición, el Alfa 156 GTA SW (que como bien me apuntaban por ahí, gasta bastante combustible). It feels like an eternity. Manufacturers relish nothing more than exceeding the performance envelope of their old halo models, and with a rash of idiotically fast machines like the McLaren P1, Ferrari F70 and Porsche 918 Spyder soon headed to market, the crew from Autocar took the time to revisit the last real German supercar on a track. So, how has the Carrera GT aged? According to Autocar, it's still worth every ludicrous cent of its asking price. Sure, there are modern examples from the 911 stable that cost less and serve up 90 percent of the performance, but the Carrera GT continues to deliver foolish thrust and precise handling nearly a decade after it was created. | Posted: 04 Nov 2012 04:35 PM PST  Video: Watch the G-Power G1 Hurricane RS sprint to 195 mph Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Videos, BMW, Luxury If you don't remember the batty G-Power G1 Hurricane RS, here's a little refresher: imagine 600 horsepower from a supercharged version of the 4.0-liter V8 that powers the BMW M3, shoved into the engine bay of the 1 Series M Coupe. G-Power says the creation is good for a top end of 205 mph, and the crew at Auto Sport recently got the chance to explore the machine's upper octaves. Fortunately for us, they brought along a camera to capture the ride. While their top-end run didn't quite manage to break the magical 200 mph barrier, the G1 Hurricane RS did manage to serve up a sprint to 195 mph. Impressive. Of course, the video also includes all the requisite throttle blips and shots of the car getting sideways on command. Looks like loads of fun, but we feel compelled to remind everyone to keep their antics off of public roads and on the track where they belong. | Posted: 04 Nov 2012 02:16 PM PST  Study: Consumer interest in electric vehicles waning a bit, Pike finds Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, USAFascination with plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) has been softening for in the US in the past year, Pike Research found after once again surveying consumers about their interest level and concerns about the practicality of making such as purchase. Interest in owning plug-in electric vehicles is down from last year's annual survey findings. Those in the "extremely" or "very" interested in purchasing category fell from 40 percent in 2011 to 36 percent in 2012. The survey reached 1,001 US residents and the questions were identical to those asked in 2011 and 2010. For those surveyed, practical lifestyle concerns were potential deal breakers. Insufficient range was the primary reason for lack of interest in EVs. More than one-third believe EV batteries are dangerous, and 40 percent think plug-ins often strand drivers when battery power is depleted. As for group demographics, they were no surprising results. Early adopters of the latest technologies are twice as likely to be interested in EVs as the average consumer. Interest in EVs didn't differ all that much by age, gender, income or education level. Familiarity with the available products varied, with consumers being most informed about the Chevrolet Volt. The practical cost of ownership continues to dampen enthusiasm, with one-third of respondents disagreeing with the statement that plug-in vehicles are cheaper to own than gasoline-powered vehicles. Consumer passion for these new technologies seems to be waning a bit. The challenge for stakeholders such as automakers will be effectively informing the public. It would also help consumers to have their own test drive experiences and get feedback from more influential stakeholders in their lives - co-workers, cousins, buddies, next-door neighbors - who they see driving a plug-in and who can answer their questions. Proton (parent company of Lotus) has been trying to build a relationship with bigger automakers (including Volkswagen) since being acquired by DRB-Hicom back in January, but this agreement with Honda could be a great opportunity for the rebuilding automaker to grow. According to the article, it is likely that the two companies could share production facilities and even vehicle platforms, and it also says that the deal could help Proton boost its export capability. Since Honda already has a plant in Malaysia, which is currently being expanded to build the new Jazz Hybrid, it isn't clear how the Japanese automaker will benefit from the deal. Chris Brown, a spokesperson for Chrysler, told MT the automaker will live on and continue to manufacture its Ypsilon hatchback in Italy. The remainder of the brand's vehicles will be built in America by Chrysler. What's more, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has said future Lancia models will be co-developed with Chrysler. That's a big shift from what we heard last week. As you may recall, the German site Automobilwoche reported the sun was poised to set on the Lancia brand for good, due in part to economic woes in Europe. Under the rumored plan, Fiat would then push Maserati farther downmarket to help fill the gap. As it turns out, Marchionne was simply talking about further platform sharing between Fiat and its profitable American brand.
