Gallery: Abarth 500C Norteamérica Share TweetEl Abarth 500C se descapota para Norteamérica originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 03:46:00 EST. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 10:53 PM PST ![]() Official: Ram confirms Fiat Ducato vans to form new Promaster series for US Filed under: Minivan/Van, Work, Chrysler, RamChrysler has officially confirmed that Ram will develop an all-new large van for the US market based on the Fiat Ducato. The commercial rig will go on sale in the third quarter of next year, joining the Ram C/V on the company's professional van line. Expect to see the Promaster face off against the Ford Transit and revised Chevrolet Express. Chrysler is pretty skimpy on details when it comes to the Promaster, but it has said the vehicle will make use of "familiar Ram Truck styling cues." The van will reportedly also bow with powertrains targeted specifically at the North American market. Chrysler and Ram made the announcement ahead of the LA Auto Show alongside news that the company will launch a new Ram commercial truck division. As you may recall, Ram trademarked the Promaster name back in September alongside a slew of other monikers. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 10:53 PM PST ![]() Official: Ram establishes new commercial truck division Filed under: LA Auto Show, Minivan/Van, Truck, Work, Ram To better go after the work truck market that its rivals Ford and General Motors have dominated for some time, the Ram Truck brand of Chrysler is starting a new sub-line of work vehicles called Ram Commercial. Rather than carrying the full Ram Commercial name, each model in the new lineup would wear the Tradesman trim level, which means that the Ram 1500 Tradesman is disappearing for retail buyers only and will still be available for commercial or fleet buyers. The Ram Commercial lineup will consist of current products like the Ram 1500 Tradesman, Ram Heavy Duty Tradesman pickups and chassis cab trucks, and the Ram C/V Tradesman cargo van, but it will also be adding a new full-size van called the 2014 Ram ProMaster Tradesman based off the Fiat Ducato. There is no word if Ram Commercial will be getting other vans from the Fiat Professional brand, but Fiat's line of work vehicles also includes the Scudo, Doblo and Florino. One of the latter two models would make the most sense going up against small cargo-friendly vehicles like the Ford Transit Connect and Mini Clubvan. Ram Commercial buyers will also benefit from the BusinessLink and "On The Job" programs. Both programs make it easier for businesses to purchase and maintain their fleets. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 09:19 PM PST ![]() Official: 2014 Fiat 500L rounds out the model range Filed under: LA Auto Show, Crossover, Hatchback, Fiat Fiat has pulled back the curtain on the North American 500L ahead of the five-door's debut at the 2012 LA Auto Show. Engineers have drawn and quartered the base 500 to create a machine that's a full 26-inches longer and six-inches taller and wider. The result is a crossover with 42-percent more interior room than its tiny three-door counterpart. Power comes from a version of the same turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo four-cylinder engine that powers the 500 Abarth and Dodge Dart. The 160-horsepower mill is paired to the buyer's choice of either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission, and offers 184 pound-feet of torque. The 2014 Fiat 500L will come in standard and Trekking configurations, with Trekking models like the one above offering differentiated front and rear fascias as well as a two-tone interior, bulging fender arches and standard 17-inch alloy wheels. Designers also graced the trim with black exterior accents for a more aggressive look. Inside, the 500L will offer Chrysler's Uconnect 5.0 infotainment interface as standard equipment, though Trekking models can be had with the 6.5 system and its larger touchscreen audio. Expect to see both trims show up in Fiat dealers toward the middle of next year. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 09:19 PM PST ![]() Official: 2013 Fiat 500C Abarth rocks you like a hurricane Filed under: LA Auto Show, Convertible, Performance, Fiat The 2013 Fiat 500C Abarth is debuting in the City of Angels. It's the super-tuned version of the 500C combining all the best of fresh-air motoring and heightened performance from the scorpion-badged marque. As with the vanilla 500C, the Abarth's folding canvas roof opens all the way at up to 50 miles per hour, and will slide back to the rear spoiler at up to 60 mph. Sweetening is found everywhere else, with Fiat's 1.4-liter MultiAir good for 160 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque in Sport mode (155 lb-ft standard), which takes the baby hatch from standstill to 60 miles per hour in just over seven seconds. Shifting is via a five-speed manual, but the sound of that engine running straight from the dual exhaust pipes to your ears with no roof to intervene should help you forget about the anachronistic transmission. Underneath its skimpy bits of metal, the Abarth gets tons of tweaks compared to the 500C to support its sporting nature. Things like a reworked suspension with stiffer springs, larger half shafts and CV joints, quicker steering and larger brake rotors, a three-setting ESC and optional 17-inch alloys all add to the fun. The cabin throws plenty of black leather around, along with one-piece seats that get racing harness pass-throughs. If the engine note isn't enough to satisfy your aural requests, the 500C Abarth is the first convertible in the world to get a Beats by Dr. Dre audio system, boasting six speakers and a subwoofer. Buyers can also take advantage of the Abarth Driving Experience free of charge, taught by instructors at - of all things - the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Sit tight, we'll have live pictures of the new performance ragtop live from the 2012 LA Motor Show for you shortly.Continue reading 2013 Fiat 500C Abarth rocks you like a hurricane2013 Fiat 500C Abarth rocks you like a hurricane originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 00:06:00 EST. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 09:19 PM PST ![]() Official: 2013 Fiat 500e finally ready to rock down to Electric Orange Avenue Filed under: LA Auto Show, Hatchback, Electric, Fiat For a car that Fiat didn't want to build, the company sure has a lot to say about it. The damn near mythical Fiat 500e is finally here, and a trip utilizing its 100-mile range would probably give you just enough time to finish reading the press releases that came with it. Among the highlights are the color, Electrico Arancione - Electric Orange to the Anglophones among you - with contrasting white lower fascia, available only with the Bianca Perla (white) interior treatment. There are three exterior treatments, Nero (black), Bianca Perla and the eSport Package, that decide the color of the exterior accents (like the front fascia and mirrors) on the car's five available hues of Argento (silver), Grigio (gray), Bianca Perla and Nero, and that aforementioned Electric Orange that can only be had with Bianca Perla. The e-Sport Package gets the Nero interior and blacks-out the hatch in Nero trim work, black wheels and a "gradient-style" graphic along the door for "a high-voltage look." The leatherette interior comes in two colors, either Nero or Steam, and gets Electric Orange accents. Electric-car touches include the seven-inch TFT screen in the dash that provides basic driving information as well as the status of the battery, range and general vehicle info. The bodywork has been resculpted for less drag, the result being a 13-percent improvement in aerodynamics and a decrease in coefficient of drag from .36 to .31. It's been done through tweaks like the perforated (Fiat calls it "dot matrix") front fascia and side sills, resculpted mirror caps and rear spoiler, bellypans under the car and 15-inch wheels with flush faces. That's to make easier work for the 111-horsepower electric-drive motor with 147 pound-feet of torque and its 24 kW, all so that it can provide the estimated range of "more than 80 miles" on the 15-inch Firehawk GT low-rolling resistance tires. Fiat says that city driving "typically" yields "greater than 100 miles." The rating is an "estimated 116 miles per gallon" and charging time on a 240-volt outlet is less than four hours. An iPhone and Android smartphone app keeps owners remotely notified of electric-car tidbits, and the TomTom navigation system can provide EV-friendly routes. Settle in and check out absolutely all the details in the encyclopedic press release below, take a gander at it in the high-res gallery above, and stay tuned for our impression from the LA Auto Show floor.Continue reading 2013 Fiat 500e finally ready to rock down to Electric Orange Avenue2013 Fiat 500e finally ready to rock down to Electric Orange Avenue originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 00:05:00 EST. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 09:19 PM PST ![]() Official: 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition gets full frontal exposure Filed under: LA Auto Show, SUV, Jeep, Off-Road Being one of the more difficult off-road trails in the US and a test bed for Jeep products, the Rubicon Trail's name was first used on the Jeep Wrangler starting in 2003. Ten years later Jeep is celebrating the Wrangler Rubicon with a special package that makes it, "The most off-road capable Wrangler in history." That's a pretty bold statement, but it definitely seems feasible after looking at some of the added equipment on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition, such as a new winch-capable steel front bumper with removable end caps that allows full frontal exposure of the meatier BF Goodrich tires for better rock-crawling abilities. This new bumper alone allows the Wrangler to take on obstacles such as rocks or ruts practically head on, but the package also gives the Rubicon an extra half-inch lift and taller 265/70R17 tires. Aside from its improved off-road prowess, the new model also has enough of a styling change to easily distinguish it from the standard Rubicon. For starters, the new front and rear bumpers and black-accented wheels give the Rubicon a beefed-up look, and a vented hood looks like it was sculpted by the same team responsible for the hood on the SRT Viper. The Anniversary Edition also gets plenty of plenty of color with red accents added to the front and rear tow hooks, shocks and a full red leather interior. The exterior will only be offered in three colors including an package-exclusive new blue-ish hue called Anvil, which is shown above. Mopar even gets in on the celebrations with finishing touches like black rocker panel rails, taillight guards and fuel door all coming standard. The Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is available on both the two-door Wrangler and the four-door Wrangler Unlimited, and while pricing has yet to be determined, the commemorative model goes on sale in the spring of 2013. Both gentlemen get screen time, but it's Nonnenberg that tells the tale of how his early interest in vintage machinery turned into him becoming The Oracle among his friends when they wanted to buy. Eventually, Underwood's friend spoke up to say 'People want to read about what you know,' and a web site - one of the finest time wasters in all the cyber world, we might add - was born. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 04:49 PM PST ![]() Official: Automoblox unveils three new limited editions including touching tribute truck Filed under: Toys/GamesIt's no secret that the Autoblog staff loves it some Automoblox, and one of the latest limited editions is pulling on our heartstrings. The T900 Jim Hoffman Limited Edition starts as the company's T900 pickup truck, but with an exclusive green-and-gold paint job, the cool toy becomes a tribute to a truck that figured prominently in the history of Automoblox. Patrick Callelo, company founder and designer, says the limited edition was inspired by his father-in-law's Z-71. "The T900 Jim Hoffman Edition is interesting because the colors were inspired by our very own '95 Chevy Z-71 that has been an integral part of our business since we started. It was the daily driver of my father-in-law. He loved that truck. Right before he died he was bragging to me about his new headers and exhaust. My wife bought it from the estate to remember her father. It's been our work horse ever since." The Jim Hoffman edition T900 features an "I'd rather be fishing" tailgate decal, is limited to a run of 750 units and for the price of $50 comes in a keepsake box perfect for Christmas gift-giving. The other two limiteds are the C9-SE and the X9-SE. Both feature Automoblox's first use of brilliant black chrome for the wheels and greenhouse, and both are signed by Callelo. These two are also limited to 750 units and come in a keepsake box. The C9-SE goes for $40, while the larger X9-SE retails for $45. We've given away Automoblox as part of our holiday sweepstakes for several years now. This year will be no different, and we can reveal that these three limited editions will be a part of this year's prize package.Automoblox unveils three new limited editions including touching tribute truck originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 19:30:00 EST. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 04:49 PM PST ![]() Quick Spin: 2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0-liter Ecoboost Filed under: Budget, Hatchback, Ford, Quick Spins There's an analogy to diesel engines hiding in the new Ford Fiesta with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost powerplant. There's still a segment of the population that has bad memories of diesel engines, and that makes it harder for Audi or Volkswagen to sell their new clean diesels in the US today. Not impossible, but more of a challenge than it needs to be. In the same way, ask any car geek if they've had good experiences with three-cylinder engines, and the response is likely to be a flashback to a bad ride in a Geo Metro. But, if no one were to tell you that the new Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost is rocking three cylinders, you'd probably be hard pressed to notice. The engine has already found a home in the Ford Focus (read our Quick Spin) and, after driving about 100 miles around Los Angeles and the Malibu hills in a Euro-spec Fiesta equipped with one, we can safely say that this is a solid B-segment car - one that happens to get over 40 miles per gallon (city) without a hybrid powertrain. Here's what we learned about the car and Ford's plans to bring it to the US. The Fiesta with a 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is already on sale in Europe, and will come to the US in about a year, in late 2013. There will be a few little changes (the Econetic badges will be replaced with the EcoBoost wording that we have here) and what we think is a big one. Specifically, auto start-stop, which is available on the European model, will not be an option for Americans. The reason, we were told, is that B-segment customers are extremely price sensitive, and spending a few hundred extra bucks on this technology - which the EPA tests still don't quite understand - is something Ford doesn't expect them to do. There is still a chance this will change, though. Still, at an estimated 40+ mpg, this flavor of the Fiesta will likely be the "most fuel-efficient, non-hybrid vehicle sold in North America." The current high-mileage Fiesta SFE model gets 40 on the highway (and 33 combined, 29 city). Ford is not talking about combined or city mpg estimates for the new Fiesta just yet. It bears repeating that you do not feel that this is a shaky three-cylinder engine. The power - 123 horses - is there when you want it, with plenty of low-end torque. Some people on our drive were bothered by noise from the high-speed turbocharger that spins up to 248,000 rpm "almost instantaneously," but this is not enough to detract many points from the overall package. Also, since a three-cylinder engine is inherently imbalanced, Ford optimized the engine mounts and made other adjustments to decouple engine shaking forces for "extreme smoothness." It worked. For shorter people, the low placement of the side mirrors, especially on the passenger side, might be a problem. I'm about 5'9", and it was fine, but my co-pilot on this drive was a few inches shorter and she could not easily use the mirrors. They do sit awfully low, as you can see here. Going around tight corners, the Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost feels a heckuva lot better than the Honda Fit in the same situation, but we found it roughly the same as the new Chevrolet Spark, two vehicles it will compete against for frugal-minded city drivers. Some of the other ways the new Fiesta will try to set itself apart is the big "40+ mpg!" sign that's sure to be emblazoned all over the dealership, the connectivity of Sync and MyFordTouch (with a new, 6.5-inch touch screen) and Sony HD radio. Jim Farley, executive vice president of global marketing, sales, service and Lincoln, said the new Fiesta is part of Ford's new high-mpg line-up, making fuel economy a reason to buy a Ford. It used to be, he said, "when people thought fuel economy, they did not think of Ford. We have made a tremendous amount of progress in the last few years of changing that perception." Put all this together and you've got a compelling "smaller is better" package that we need more details on to properly assess (price is a big one). For years, people have been asking for the Euro-spec Fiesta in the US. Well, we're going to get it, start-stop excluded.Continue reading 2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0-liter Ecoboost2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0-liter Ecoboost originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 18:58:00 EST. KBB hands out the awards based on the projected residual value of mostly all 2013 model year vehicles, and Toyota skated home with a number of awards including 10 of the 22 overall categories and having five of its products in the top 10 for models with best resale value. KBB's Best Resale Value Awards were announced in the same week as the ALG Residual Value Awards, and there were many similarities between both lists, especially when it came to Toyota. To come up with its winners, KBB measures depreciation over the first five years of ownership, and looks for the cars it expects to hold its value the best after this time; on average, the report says the 2013 model year vehicles will lose 61.8 percent of its value in five years. Of the 22 categories, 15 slots were filled by Toyota, Honda and Nissan products, while the Camaro and Porsche (Cayenne and Panamera) each took home a pair of awards. If Toyota has anything to be upset about in this list of cars, it's that categories for Hybrid/Alternative Energy Car and Electric Vehicle went to the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt, respectively. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 03:45 PM PST ![]() Official: Toyota issues recall for 150K Tacoma pickups over possible spare tire trouble Filed under: Truck, Recalls, Safety, ToyotaToyota has initiated a recall of its Tacoma pick-up from the 2001 to 2004 model years, with up to 150,000 units affected. Tacomas sold in 20 snowbelt states and the District of Columbia could have an issue with the lift plate on their spare tire carrier, which is a piece of metal that helps raise the emergency spare wheel located at the back and underneath the truck. The plate might not have been properly coated with anticorrosion protection, and this could lead to the plate corroding on trucks driven in states that use salt on the roads during the winter. A lift plate failure could lead to the spare tire coming loose and causing an accident. Toyota is working on a remedy to the situation and will notify owners when it is ready. The release below from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has more information, including all of the cold-weather states in which affected trucks are registered, and indicates that the recall should begin next month.Continue reading Toyota issues recall for 150K Tacoma pickups over possible spare tire troubleToyota issues recall for 150K Tacoma pickups over possible spare tire trouble originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 17:57:00 EST. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 02:58 PM PST ![]() Opinion: Manufacturing advances bring carbon fiber closer to mass production Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing There's no one single breakthrough, but rather a combination of improvements that make this possible. Automakers have dreamed of using carbon fiber in mass production for decades. But sky-high raw material prices and painfully slow manufacturing cycle times meant that dream was always more like a fantasy. Not anymore. Several recent advancements mean that carbon fiber could soon play an important role in the automotive industry. Carbon fiber has been used in race cars, exotic sports cars and in automotive aftermarket parts for years. But now automakers believe they've identified the path of how to use it in mass production, and do so by the second half of this decade. There's no one single breakthrough, but rather a combination of improvements that make this possible. And they're coming just in time for automakers who face the daunting task of boosting their average fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon. John McElroy is host of the TV program "Autoline Detroit" and daily web video "Autoline Daily". Every month he brings his unique insights as a Detroit insider to Autoblog readers. Posted: 27 Nov 2012 02:58 PM PST ![]() Confirmed: KBB, ALG awards recognize hybrids with best resale value Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Hybrid For car shoppers doing their math on lifecycle ownership costs, hybrid electric vehicles always present the challenge of being more expensive - maybe $5,000 more - than comparable non-hybrid models. High gasoline prices can help tip the scale in favor of gas-electrics, as do great loan and lease deals. Resale value is another factor in the equation, and several hybrid models, including a plug-in hybrid version, have been on the market long enough to show their long-term value.Kelley Blue Book has announced its 2013 Resale Value awards, which forecast resale values as a percentage of the base price over a 60-month period. The winners were announced around the same time as ALG released its residual value awards, which recognize value retention for leased vehicles over a 60-month period. For both of the awards, Japanese brands took the top rankings, with Toyota being the top mainstream brand and Lexus the leading luxury brand in the KBB awards. That was the second year in a row that Toyota and Lexus took these KBB titles. Honda won the mainstream brand and Acura the luxury brand top honors in the ALG awards. Toyota also did well in the green vehicle awards. Its Lexus division won KBB's Hybrid SUV category with recognition for the RX 450h, which is expected to be worth 64 percent of its original price after 36 months and 43 percent after 60 months. ALG gave the 2013 Toyota Prius C its award for most valuable hybrid. Domestic brands didn't do nearly as well overall, but Ford and General Motors were recognized for their hybrid technologies. The Ford Fusion Hybrid took top honors in the hybrid/alternative energy car segment with KBB. It's forecasted to hold 59 percent of its value after 36 months. For the second year, the Chevrolet Volt took the KBB resale value award for the electric vehicle category. It's doing better in the value ratings, too: the 2013 Volt is expected to retain 46 percent of its value after three years, up from 42 percent a year ago. Hybrid and alternative powertrain vehicles are still a small piece of the pie when it comes to these resale value awards, but it wasn't that long ago that they weren't recognized much at all.KBB, ALG awards recognize hybrids with best resale value originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 17:13:00 EST. Bidders can now vie for the 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible from the 1988 film Rain Man featuring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. The straight-eight powered convertible is one of two used in filming and features an upgraded rear suspension to cope with the weight of a cameraman and camera equipment. The seller has included several bits of documentation showing where the big Buick was rented by MGM for filming, including insurance receipts and loan agreements. As it sits, the Roadmaster has an opening bid of $40,000 and is located in Sacramento, California, though we suspect the seller may have a much higher reserve. The auction won't reveal that figure until December 7.
