Como bien recordarás, esta compañía de inversiones y capital-riesgo era la propietaria de Ducati. La adquirió en 2006, y la vendió este 2012, por una cantidad que pasa por ser el triple de lo que pagó en su momento. Vamos, un negocio redondo para esta firma de inversiones cuya sede está en Reino Unido, pero operada por italianos en su gran parte. Pues bien, Investindustrial ha presentado una "tentadora" oferta para tomar el control de Aston Martin. The Edmunds metric of "purchase intent" declined by 1.9 percent for the Kia Soul (pictured), meaning that the largest drop in consideration coincided with the model that suffered the biggest drop in mileage ratings. Consideration dropped .4 percent for the Hyundai Elantra, and purchasing intent also fell for the Hyundai Accent and Veloster, as well as the Kia Rio. An Edmunds analyst thinks the brouhaha could affect "future business as this development may have a direct impact on Hyundai's credibility with some U.S. buyers," and Moody's Investment Service figures compensating buyers might cost "$100 million a year until the cars are scrapped" - and that cost doesn't include potential damages from lawsuits. But in the "we all have opinions" column, other analysts don't believe there won't be any serious long-term fallout from the mileage mistatements. Lo han mostrado en pleno Salón del Automóvil de Guangzhou y los responsables de la firma ya han asegurado que no lo veremos tal cual en suelo europeo. Entre las que sí están sobre el papel encontramos la nueva parrilla frontal adaptada al estilo de los últimos productos de la firma y unos paragolpes más envolventes, aunque no necesariamente idénticos. Lo que casi con seguridad no tendrá son las barras de techo y tampoco se baraja la posibilidad de modificar el tercer cristal lateral. La versión de Dongfeng-Peugeot también más larga (se va a los 4,43 metros) y no está claro que "el nuestro" también estire su longitud. La variante china cuenta con un motor de dos litros combinada con un cambio CVT que no está previsto para Europa, si bien a cambio aquí tendremos una gran variedad de mecánicas diésel. Devin Biek and Richard Worsham got it into their heads to start building new bikes borrowing design references from their favorite antique two-wheelers, after noticing how many moped enthusiasts were working to convert their budget rides into more capable machines. The result is the Janus Halcyon 50, and the creation is powered by a liquid-cooled 50cc two-stroke engine. A six-speed transmission puts power to the rear wheel via a chain drive, and the whole contraption is good for a top speed of 55 miles per hour. Biek and Worsham also say the Halcyon 50 can net you 60 miles per gallon, which means the bike has a range of 180 miles thanks to the 3-gallon polished aluminum fuel tank. What's more, we hear tell the engine can be easily upgraded to generate around twice the horsepower. With its 18-inch wheels, leather saddle and hardtail configuration, the Halcyon 50 pulls at our heartstrings in a big way. Each bike is built in Goshen, Indiana, and Janus contracts local Amish workers to bend and weld the company's frames. Sinfully cool. If you want one, the company will politely ask for $3,900. The $4.2 billion deal is for Ally's Latin America, Europe and China operations. "GM is entering the most aggressive rollout of new vehicles in its history, and this acquisition will make us an even more formidable competitor by ensuring that competitive financing is available to our customers and dealers around the world," says General Motors CFO Dan Ammann. The ability to finance from a captive unit will let General Motors extend better loan terms to potential customers, which the automaker sees as key to closing a sales gap that's between 10 and 15 percent versus automakers who already have their own financing divisions. GM will be handing over more than $2 billion in cash to GM Financial, and the unit will more than double its liabilities from $12 billion to $27 billion while also doubling its assets to about $33 billion. GM Financial expects to bolster its yearly pre-tax earnings by $300-$400 million. It will take at least six months to wrap this deal up, provided it gets approvals from various oversight agencies. La filial de Chrysler para Japón acaba de presentar dos modelos nuevos tras cuatro años de auténtica sequía en el país. La sorpresa nos la llevamos al comprobar que uno de ellos no es otro que el pequeño Ypsilon. Aunque Lancia no está presente en Japón de manera oficial, los usuarios e interesados saben que pueden acceder a cualquier modelo de la firma que les guste a través de la red Fiat. Lo llevan haciendo desde hace tres años con unos resultados discretos pero suficientes teniendo en cuenta que no hay gastos de marketing (ni siquiera catálogos ya que suponen que el interesado que pide uno lo conoce muy bien). The $11.2 million test equipment can spin a tire to the equivalent of 200 mph while monitoring data on handling, ride, torque and braking forces and replicating various road conditions. After seven years of "Red Bull this" and "Red Bull that," Coca-Cola is reportedly ready to jump into the F1 fray with its Sweden-based energy drink Burn. Rumors had placed Coca-Cola's entry with McLaren F1, but it's actually Lotus that has secured the deal. Las entregas de vehículos nuevos no hacen más que caer mes a mes y si en octubre la cifra total de ventas se desplomaron en un 45% con sólo 11.353 unidades, en el acumulado las cosas están en un nivel igual de malo con una caída del 40%. Entre las muchas preocupaciones de la marca están los malos resultados logrados por el SM5 (nuestro Latitude) en lo que llevamos de 2012. Durante años uno de los productos más vendidos en Corea del Sur representando el 40% de las ventas totales de Samsung, en la generación actual no ha conseguido el favor del público. Para evitar males mayores, acaban de presentar una actualización del modelo con el apellido "Platinum" -en la imagen superior- del que tienen ciertas esperanzas habida cuenta que en sólo una semana se han registrado 2.200 pedidos en firme. La idea de Samsung es comercializar unas 30.000 unidades de la familia SM5 al completo este año y, ya para 2013, aumentar el número hasta las 50.000. To meet that demand, Tata Motors, parent company of Jag and Land Rover, is partnering with Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Co. The two announced plans to invest $1.75 billion to build a new plant and create a new, China-focused brand. 2014 is the target for completion of the factory. Jaguars and Land Rovers built at the facility will be the first ever produced outside the UK according to the Associated Press. The JV will be called Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Company Ltd. The announcement comes less than a month after JLR announced it would open a design studio in China. It's not clear from the reports whether the two announcements are part of the same JV or two separate plans. China requires any company wanting to set up domestic production to partner with a local business. By doing so, JLR avoids a 25-percent tariff on imported cars. Chery benefits from a planned research and development center as well as a chance to "really upgrade its capabilities," according to Bill Russo of Synergistic Ltd. in Beijing. The Kuwait-based financial firm is apparently seeking to restructure its debt load and has sought $800 million for its 64-percent share in the English automaker. That amount compares to the $925 million that it took for a consortium, Investment Dar among them, to purchase 100-percent of Aston Martin from Ford in 2007. According to reports, bidding for the 64 percent hasn't gone anywhere near that price, however. Bloomberg (parent company of Businessweek) reports that London-based private equity house Investindustrial has made a bid of nearly 250 million pounds ($401 million U.S.), with their overture trumped shortly thereafter by Indian automaking conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra. According to the report, a winner will be chosen from among those two companies, but instead of Investment Dar's entire 64-percent stake, the winner will get 40 percent equity and 50 percent of the voting rights. Investment Dar will hold onto 24 percent of Aston. There's some confusion around some of the numbers, however. According to Financial News, though, the stake being offered is 50 percent and Investindustrial, even with a lower bid, might still be the favorite. Investindustrial bought Ducati in 2006, then sold it to Audi for a 300-percent gain in July of this year. Working with another German automaker this time around, it's said that Investindustrial has stressed its commitment to invest in new product, and both reports indicate that it has a tentative deal with Mercedes-Benz to provide Aston access to technology, engines, gearboxes and other parts from AMG. Es un modelo tan importante para la marca que casi podríamos catalogarlo como el "hijo predilecto" de Honda en el segmento de los scooter. Esto es lógico teniendo en cuenta que desde 1984 se han vendido más de un millón de unidades en Europa. En el caso concreto de España, el Scoopy es un scooter muy valorado, si bien depende mucho según la región. Por ejemplo en Barcelona es un auténtico súper ventas y toda una institución. Mires hacia donde mires, siempre habrá un SH en cualquiera de sus generaciones. An updated BMW M1 has been a fantasy since the last of the 456 original M1s rolled off the line in 1981, and we're told that the coming M8 will finally be the proper successor. Apparently there's still some conflict to be worked through: company CEO Norbert Reithofer isn't exactly sold on it, whereas M Division president Friedrich Nitschke "doesn't take no for an answer." If you'll remember, the 1 Series M Coupe had to leap the same hurdles, the BMW brass not smitten with the business-case numbers, but Kay Segler, M Division president at the time, pushed it through. And we saw how well that worked out. BMW's M8 Is on the Way, Come Hell or High Water Another German supercar in the making is the BMW M8. Previously known as the M1, this car is believed to be the halo model that BMW will pull out of the bag to celebrate its centenary in 2016. Chairman Norbert Reithofer, who is not known as a sports car aficionado, views this project with mixed feelings. Having recently decided that the next-generation 1- and 2-series will be built on a new front-/all-wheel-drive matrix, the big boss is reluctant to give a green light to a V-8-powered tarmac peeler. But Friedrich Nitschke, who runs the M division, doesn't take no for an answer - even if it means tweaking the project so that the M8 can share the carbon-fiber-and-aluminum underpinnings of the super-frugal i8. This approach could kill two birds with one stone by creating significant economies of scale and by giving the 600-hp sports car a weight advantage over its more conventional rivals. On a lesser scale, Reithofer has personally sealed the fate of the on-off-on Z2 roadster. Apparently the numbers did not work out, and there is not much time left for a compact, rear-wheel-drive platform, which will be mothballed in 2021. If a small, open-top BMW does materialize, it will be front-wheel drive and pooled with an open-top Mini. The Z4 will get a new lease on life, but since the segment is in free fall, the third-generation version needs to combine the existing folding hardtop with a redesigned body and interior. A price for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala, which will sticker from $27,535 (*inclusive of an $810 destination charge). The latest headline-grabber on the Epsilon II platform, the coming Impala - which will go on sale in Spring 2013 - can be had with either a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 195 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque or a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp and 264 lb-ft. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 182 hp and eAssist light hybrid technology will come soon thereafter, with all powerplants yoked to a six-speed automatic. The $27,535 base price gets the 2.5-liter in LS trim. It will take another $2,250 to get up to an LT, and then another $4,770 for the top-flight LTZ that runs $34,555. You'll have to wait for that LS model, though, because the 3.6-liter will be the first one to market. Not available in LS trim, the 3.6-liter will command $30,760 in LT spec and $36,580 in LTZ trim. The conclusion of the most simplistic comparison with the $26,685 2013 Impala is that the sedan's base price has gone up by $850. However, the 2014 Impala is completely new and the base version gets a smaller, less-powerful engine. It's possible that performance figures could be similar even with the price-leader model if tuning and weight are improved, but we'll have to see, as Chevrolet hasn't released any figures yet. For the moment, a better comparison could be the 3.0-liter LT trims, the 2014 model representing a $2,550 increase over the long-serving outgoing car, albeit with more available features like MyLink with natural voice recognition, ten airbags, adaptive cruise control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert. Este mes de noviembre, Mercedes-Benz celebra el aniversario de una pequeña revolución ocurrida en la marca. El Mercedes 190E cumple 30 años. Es en 1982 que aparece por primera vez en la gama del fabricante alemán una berlina "compacta", según la terminología de la marca. Y es que el W201, como se le conoce en interno, es el coche más pequeño hasta la fecha de la marca de la estrella. Cuando llega al mercado, este modelo se convierte en el tercero de una gama compuesta por los modelos intermedios y los de la Clase S. Posted: 24 Nov 2012 07:26 AM PST ![]() Official: DOE funding 20 Clean Cities projects with alt-fuel infrastructure Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy, USA The US Department of Energy is funding 20 new projects to support states and local governments in streamlining the infrastructure needed for alternative fuel vehicles to thrive. Working through the DOE's Clean Cities initiative, these projects could help governments and other stakeholders cut red tape and implement the infrastructure, training and regional planning required to recharge and refuel vehicles running on electricity, natural gas and propane autogas. It's not a big investment of federal funds - about $11 million will go to 20 Clean Cities projects that require hundreds of thousands to complete. The funding will pay for a range of infrastructure and training needs such as safety and technical training for fleet operators, mechanics, first responders (such as paramedics) and code officials; streamlining permitting and procurement; and working with public and private fleets to integrate petroleum reduction strategies. Of the 20 funded projects, the biggest allotment is going to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District in San Francisco. Its "California Fleets and Workplace Alternative Fuels Project" is supporting development of templates and best practices for permitting the alternative fuel vehicle refueling infrastructure; working with colleges on first responder training; promoting workplace electric vehicle charging; and working with fleets to implement petroleum reduction strategies. The project will receive $1 million to meet these goals. Several of the Clean Cities coalitions are receiving $500,000. One of them, the city of Austin, TX, will assist in the streamlining of infrastructure procurement; conduct electric and natural gas vehicle safety training; host workshops for fleets in the San Antonio and Austin areas; and setting up training seminars on multi-unit dwelling and workplace EV charging. You can read about each of the 20 Clean Cities initiatives in this PDF. If you're out there talking to stakeholders in the alternative fuel vehicle infrastructure - whether that be automakers, charging and fueling suppliers, government agencies, fleet managers or advocacy groups - the question inevitably comes up: What comes first - the chicken or the egg? Would consumers and fleets buy a lot more alternative fuel vehicles if there were enough charging and fueling stations, and other needed resources, in place? Or would putting the infrastructure in place alleviate range anxiety and make these vehicles viable options? Another difficult question usually pops up - when will the vehicle sticker prices come down?
