Posted: 20 Nov 2012 06:10 PM PST ![]() First Drive: 2013 SRT Viper [w/video] Filed under: Coupe, Performance, First Drives, SRTAn Extraordinary Effort to Break Previous Stereotypes The Viper has always scared the hell out of me. My aversion to the famed American sports car has nothing to do with its immensely powerful ten-cylinder engine or its Matchbox-like styling - those attributes are genuinely captivating. Instead, I have found little to like in a vehicle that is brash, coarse, uncivilized and untrustworthy at the limit. Rather than unload a slew of bitter complaints directed at each of its previous four generations, let's just say that the Viper has always represented the automotive equivalent of barbarous mechanical mayhem. That is, until now. After a three-year absence, an all-new Viper debuted at the 2012 New York Auto Show. No longer under the Dodge umbrella, Chrysler's supercar returned wearing the new performance-oriented SRT (Street and Racing Technology) brand label. Despite its familiar shape and engine configuration, the completely redesigned coupe promised not only more power but better handling, superior craftsmanship, innovative technology and a world-class cabin. While this may sound as if the automaker's halo two-seater has been tamed after being forced through politically correct manners and etiquette classes, my observation - after spending a couple days with the snake on public roads and at Sonoma Raceway - is that the iconic Viper may be much more refined and less temperamental, but it still has some of the longest and sharpest fangs in the segment.Continue reading 2013 SRT Viper [w/video]2013 SRT Viper [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 20:41:00 EST. Posted: 20 Nov 2012 04:37 PM PST ![]() Official: 2013 Nissan Leaf details unveiled in Japan: more range, better charging Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Japan The updated, second-gen Nissan Leaf was unveiled in Japan this week, and it comes with a lot of improvements. This is still the Leaf people know and (mostly) love, but it's incrementally better all around. For example, the new Leaf has "achieved" 228 kilometers (142 miles) of range on a charge on the JC08 test mode, up from 200 km (124 miles) in the previous version. This increase comes, in part, from better regenerative brakes and lower weight high-voltage unit. A new motor is part of a combined powertrain unit that has "integrated functions, streamlined battery module and case structure, and use of lighter parts." The dashboard now also has the remaining battery capacity displayed as a percentage. There are also three new exterior colors (bringing the total to seven): Dark Metal Gray, Brilliant White Pearl and White. For battery lovers, there is also a new "long-life mode," that will only ever charge the battery to 80 percent full no matter how the car is being charged. Nissan also said that the new Leaf has a lower-cost "S grade" model that starts at 3,349,500 yen ($40,991 US, at today's exchange rates). Compare this to the top-of-the-line G model, which starts at 4,133,850 yen ($50,590). Subsidies are available. More details on the Japan-only updates - and a short introductory video - are available below. We should get details on the next US model soon - and we suspect many of these updates will make the trip across the Pacific. So far, Nissan has sold 43,000 Leafs around the world.Continue reading 2013 Nissan Leaf details unveiled in Japan: more range, better charging2013 Nissan Leaf details unveiled in Japan: more range, better charging originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 19:27:00 EST. So much so that you may say it has "toy car" characteristics. Well Hyundai has taken that notion in a creative direction, creating a stop-motion race made of Legos. It is a between a Lego-ized Veloster, and a nondescript racer of the blocky persuasion. The video is in celebration of the latest version of the iPhone and iPad driving game Asphalt 7: Heat. The game has been available on iTunes since June 21 of this year. As part of the promotion for this game, Hyundai is running a competition that began yesterday, and goes through Sunday, November 25. The winner of this competition will win a trip to Korea, to check out Hyundai's headquarters, as well as a trip to the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A Korean factory and Detroit in January? Sign us up! As for the video promo, it makes for some pretty exciting racing, incorporating elements from the Asphalt 7 game, such as N2O and cash icons, not to mention a sweet jump. In all, its a pretty entertaining stop-motion Lego video. Asphalt 7 is the first in the series that is available for both iPhone and iPad, and this video really makes want to check it out!Continue reading Hyundai Veloster Turbo goes Lego racingHyundai Veloster Turbo goes Lego racing originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 19:15:00 EST. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if the seat in certain 2012 and 2013 model year vehicles gets wet, the module may malfunction and may not detect the presence of a child restraint. If that happens, the airbag will not shut off and will deploy in the event of a collision. Such a scenario could greatly increase the risk of serious child injury. As a remedy, Volkswagen technicians will replace the control modules free of charge. The automaker hasn't released a schedule of when the recall will begin, but owners can expect to be notified of the campaign soon. You can view the official NHTSA recall notice below for more information. Manufacturing cars and marketing them through their dealer networks may take a backseat to smart transportation and mobility. See also: Daimler's Car2go.Toyota's "Ha:mo" - Harmonious Mobility Network - will provide communities with service offerings designed to alleviate three big problems: traffic jams, CO2 emissions and energy consumption waste. It could also bring positive effects to local residents through new encounters, driving people to be more active and get out more. Ha:mo will be delivered through two services - Ha:mo NAVI with route guidance and coordination of private and public transportation; and Ha:mo RIDE, a car sharing system using mini electric cars. Watch the video below to see anime characters riding transit and driving mini-EVs, with handheld smart devices and signage presented in both Japanese and English. Ha:mo NAVI provides transportation route options - it's not just faster or cheaper, but lowers CO2 emissions based on traffic congestion. It suggests alternative routes when traffic is congested on the drive home. When bus overcrowding is expected, the system encourages bus operators to increase the number of routes. Ha:mo RIDE is a mobility network for short distance trips in town. Drivers can book ride sharing reservations through their Ha:mo NAVI units. They can pick up one of the ultra-compact EVs at different locations. The tiny three-wheeler EV can park itself in tight spaces. A smart battery charging system will recharge batteries during off-peak hours to avoid tapping out the community's electricity supply. The more people join Ha:mo, the more positive effects Ha:mo will have on the community, according to the video. It will reduce stress caused by traffic jams and rush hour, lower CO2 emissions and lessen energy consumption waste. Ha:mo will bring people many new encounters, and drive people to be more active and encourage them to get out more. It could be a point of pride for communities. BMW is another automaker that has taken on its own smart transportation and mobility campaign, BMW Megacity Project. Forecasts say the world is heading toward overcrowded "megacities," and BMW is delivering electrified high-performance luxury cars with zero CO2 emissions. BMW's DriveNow car sharing program will also help put less cars on the road.Continue reading Toyota animates Ha:mo mobility networkToyota animates Ha:mo mobility network originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 17:54:00 EST. General Motors' MyLink: takes the in-car computer out of the car, puts it in the driver's smartphone. The company campaigned five ALL4 racecars last year, and took the overall victory with driver Stéphane Peterhansel and co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret. Second place also fell to Mini, and the remaining three cars soaked up spots in the top ten for an impressive finish. This year, Mini is headed back with specially-prepared Countryman models in competition as Peterhansel attempts to defend his crown from a new crop of rivals. The team will also make use of Countryman service vehicles, all fitted with an off-road package and a spate of Mini accessories to help them overcome the 5,000 miles of brutal terrain through Peru. Those include a four-piece body kit made of durable plastic to help protect the body from dings and chips, and the beefy fender flares call to mind the exaggerated arches on the competition vehicles. Speaking of the competitors, Peterhansel piloted his ALL4 race car to gold in the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies this year in preparation for Dakar. We'll keep an eye on his progress once the race gets started in January. But there's more to this bad bike than bloated, knobby tires. Designed by Alessandro Tartarini, son of the founder of Italian motorcycle-maker Italjet, the Brutus is powered by a 750cc, single cylinder, 4-stroke with claimed output of 45 horsepower. It's coupled to a CVT with optional reverse and low gears. Those components are mounted to a beefy high-strentgh steel chassis riding on 14-inch aluminum wheels. Those tires are Maxxis Bighorn ATV tires, designed to tackle sand, dirt and rocks. The front tire is 6-inches wide and the rear 7.5-inches. Despite the aggressive tread front and back, the bike is rear-wheel drive only (unlike the much older Rokon, which is similar in appearance and two-wheel-drive). First displayed last week, the Aggie Bus can charge wirelessly, with "a maximum misalignment of up to six inches during charging over an air gap of 10 inches," and is over 90 percent efficient from the grid to the battery, according to Utah State University. USU has a Wireless Power Transfer team that is working with the USTAR Advanced Transportation Institute, located at USU. The bus is a "first-of-its-kind" prototype and tests show it can recharge at a power level of up to 25 kilowatts. USU researchers have been working on wireless charging for a while. Last summer, we learned about the in-road charging system, which at the time was limited to five kW. When we caught up with USU this spring, where we learned that 50-kW systems are on the radar, too. Using a mix of spy shots and traditional Audi RS cues, the site was able to get a good enough idea about the car to create some impressive renderings of RS7 from just about every angle. Obvious RS cues include the oversized front air vents and mesh grille, but the site also did a great job in imagining what the rest of the car would look like including the rear diffuser with oval dual exhaust outlets and the big V-spoke large enough to accommodate the carbon ceramic brakes. Speculating about engines, the site seems to think that the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 from the S7 will stay under the hood, but power should take a significant jump from the current 414 horsepower up to well above the 500-hp mark. It's not clear when the RS7 could make its debut, but be sure to head on over to Fourtitude.com to check out other rendered images of the car as well as some more recent spy shots.Rendered Speculation: Audi RS7 looks sinfully sweet originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 15:45:00 EST. Posted: 20 Nov 2012 12:44 PM PST ![]() Quick Spin: 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club Filed under: Convertible, Mazda, Quick Spins In what could have been my final time reviewing a current-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, I'll have to say it was like saying a bittersweet farewell to an old friend. You see, the third-generation Miata (NC) is my favorite iteration of the fun little roadster, and with the next Miata being co-developed with Alfa Romeo, I fear the car might lose some of the "jinba ittai" that has made it incredible track car for the last 23 years. If this was to be my last extended drive in the MX-5 Miata, I couldn't have asked for a better send-off with it being a black-on-red tester with a soft top, manual transmission and the all-new Club trim level. Perhaps as a tip of its proverbial hat to the car's cult following among club racers, the 2013 model year for the MX-5 Miata sees the new Club model replace the Touring trim level in the middle of the car's lineup. This new model should also be a welcomed sight for buyers who were late in snagging one of the 450 Miata Special Edition units that were sent to the US this year, and with a starting price of $26,705, it is substantially less than the Special Edition car. Like the Special Edition, though, the Club comes with black wheels and black door mirrors, and other key elements helped give the car an eye-catching look that got the car noticed almost everywhere I took it.Driving Notes The first thing I notice every time I drive a Miata is how balanced the car feels. A low curb weight (less than 2,500 pounds) and an almost perfectly even weight distribution make the car fun to drive in just about any conditions. More fun, of course, is driving with the top down, and the Miata's manual soft top has to be one of the simplest tops to operate in the history of convertibles. One central latch holds it in place, and it is light and hassle-free to raise and lower. You can even just reach back while at a stop light and raise the roof in about five seconds with one hand. The six-speed manual transmission not only makes the Miata more engaging to drive, it also gives the car more power. Cars equipped with the automatic transmission are rated at 158 horsepower and those with the manual get 167 ponies under the hood, and while I've yet to drive an automatic Miata, at no point does the manual's power feel insufficient. Even better, it is still decent on gas with fuel economy numbers 21 miles per gallon city and 28 highway; I had no problems hitting either number even with a healthy dose of spirited driving. Aside from maybe a Tesla Roadster, there are few cars on the road that feel as small as the Miata. To some, this might be a good thing, but when the average SUV bumper is at face level and getting into and out of the car feels like it should be a part of the Insanity Workout, the Miata might not be an ideal primary vehicle. The 2013 Miata Club represents a slight price increase ($875) over the 2012 Miata Touring, but what you get is a truly unique look without having to make any modifications yourself. The Gunmetal Black 17-inch wheels do a lot for the car, but the Club also gets black side stripes, black headlights, a front lip spoiler, rear diffuser, "Club" fender badges and chrome trunk brackets; inside, the instrument panel gets a new body-color-matching insert and red stitching to accent the black seats. In today's tech-savvy world, the Miata's option list is devoid of many options available on most entry-level cars, but for a car that shouldn't even have cupholders (especially on the manual-equipped models), the lack of technology inside the Miata makes the car feel even more raw and refreshing. 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 15:02:00 EST. Posted: 20 Nov 2012 11:57 AM PST ![]() 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup cars to get drivers' names across windshield Filed under: Motorsports, Chevrolet, Toyota As the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup season wraps up, teams and drivers start preparing for next year and the big changes the sport has in store. All 2013 Sprint Cup cars will get a new look in an attempt to make the cars better resemble the production cars they mimic. As a part of the new design, NASCAR has also changed some of the rules for the paint scheme and decals that are placed on the cars' exteriors. To keep the automakers happy, teams will no longer be allowed to clutter the front or rear of the cars with sponsorship stickers and logos. Since these are pretty much the only areas in which to distinguish the different makes any more, keeping them clean will make it easier to tell the models apart. Teams will be allowed to place a small logo on the front of the car and the car number on the front and rear fascias, but for the sake of visibility in night races, no decal can cover the headlights or taillights (insert laugh track). The biggest decal change for 2013 is that drivers' last names will now be on a decal across the top of the windshield. With Dodge pulling out of NASCAR, that leaves just three automakers still involved with the series: Ford, Toyota and Chevrolet. We've already seen the new Fusion and Camry Cup cars, but we'll have to wait until November 29 to see the new Chevrolet SS racer. The newly designed Sprint Cup cars will run for the first time at the 2013 Daytona 500 in February.Continue reading 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup cars to get drivers' names across windshield2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup cars to get drivers' names across windshield originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 13:33:00 EST.
