Video: Did Drexel police use excessive force pinning a suspect with their cruiser? [w/poll]
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Safety, Videos, Police/Emergency Last December, Drexel University Police were attempting to apprehend Walter Johnson, who was was suspected of trying to burglarize local buildings. When the authorities tried to detain Johnson, he fled. And whether it was intentional or not, the pursuit of ended in a dramatic show of force when police pinned Johnson to a wall with their police cruiser. The whole incident was captured on video, and almost a year later, the case is back in the news due to a new parole hearing for Johnson and a lawsuit being brought up against the Philadelphia-area university. Johnson, who had left a halfway house without permission, was spotted by security cameras attempting to enter several buildings, and when police approached him, he took off running. It's not known how long police were chasing him, but it was all over after he was hit by a Ford Explorer police vehicle and rammed into a building. The force of the impact was enough to crumple the front end of the SUV and shatter Johnson's pelvis and leg. Johnson later told police that he was looking for a restroom, but police said that he and another man he was with were both carrying screwdrivers. According to a report by WPVI ABC6, Philadelphia's district attorney has dropped the charges against Johnson, but he has remained in prison since the incident for violating his parole. The university itself is declining to comment due to the pending lawsuit, but that isn't stopping critics from accusing the police of using excessive force to capture Johnson. Official: Visteon e-Bee gives high-tech treatment to Nissan Leaf
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Nissan If Nissan thought its all-electric Leaf was high-tech, well, Visteon is looking to go a little further. The Michigan-based auto supplier is displaying its e-Bee concept at Munich's Electronica 2012 Trade Fair, and there is no shortage of techie goodies. Among the advancements are an integrated climate module that combines heating and A/C with the engine's cooling system and cuts weight as a result. Visteon also replaces the rear-view mirror with a 180-degree camera, puts touch screens on both sides of the steering wheel, and adds climate-control modules in each door mount as well as audio systems in both the driver and passenger headsets. Visteon is also pushing for advances on both the communications and eco-friendly front. The car's information may be personalized by global region, driving preferences and owner' apps of choice. Additionally, Visteon is including recyclable fibers, resins and other materials to make the upgraded Leaf more eco-worthy. Official: Updated 2013 Honda CR-Z priced at $19,975*
Filed under: Hybrid, Hatchback, HondaHonda unveiled its updated CR-Z hybrid hatchback at the Paris Motor Show a couple of months ago in its Euro-spec configuration, and with improved performance and fuel economy promised to us under the bright Parisian lights, we have been waiting to see how the changes will affect CR-Z's US version. It looks like Honda has come through by giving the hybrid hatch more power, better fuel economy and refreshed styling, and it has done so while keeping its starting price under $20,000. The 2013 CR-Z goes on sale this week priced slightly higher at $19,975 for the base model and $21,655 for the CR-Z EX, (*neither price including a $790 destination charge). The outgoing 2012 model carried a base MSRP of $19,695, so Honda has almost managed to hold the line on pricing despite the content increases. The biggest improvements to the CR-Z come courtesy of a once-over to many of the car's drivetrain elements, but the most important is a new lithium-ion battery pack. Compared to the nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) system previously used in the CR-Z, the 2013 model's Li-Ion battery has a higher 15 kW output which in turn helps increase the overall system output to 130 horsepower and up to 140 pound-feet of torque (increases of eight horses and 12 lb-ft). Even with this increased output, the fuel economy has also gone up a little, with manual transmission models now rated at 31 mpg city and 38 mpg highway, while CVT-equipped cars achieve 36 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. Other key drivetrain updates include a reworked manual transmission with a larger clutch and lower final drive ratio, and drivers can now take advantage of the new Plus Sport System that gives the hybrid system an extra boost of acceleration under certain conditions (battery charged to more than 50 percent and vehicle speed above 19 miles per hour) at the push of a button. These upgrades are in addition to a handful of styling tweaks made to the car. Outside, the CR-Z has a fresher face with a reworked fascia and optional LED daytime running lights. Two new exterior colors, new wheels and a rear diffuser include the other main changes for the new model year. Honda has made similar small changes inside the CR-Z with new trim, redesigned door panels and added standard features like a rearview camera for that tricky split rear window, along with Bluetooth. As far as options go, new technology includes available Pandora and text messaging features, and the EX trim level's cabin now gets a sportier black-and-red color scheme. It will be interesting to see if these changes can improve the car's frankly dismal sales. Honda has only sold 3,705 units being sold through October (down 64.7 percent year over year) making it Honda's worst-selling model this year. Video: Mercedes launches first E-Class refresh teaser

The video focuses primarily on the headlights of the E-Class that have a new shape and will offer (at least as an option) full LED lighting including the signals, stylish running lights and adaptive high and low beams. We also note that the the current E's odd four-pod headlight design is being replaced with a more conventional design that fits in with other Mercedes models. Based on the numerous spy shots we've seen for all of the different bodystyles, the new E-Class will be getting a fresh face including a new hood, fascia and grille. The sedan will also get redesigned rear doors and quarter panels, but we have yet to see or hear of any changes being made to the interior.Scroll down to watch the teaser video. Official: Toyota introduces new technologies to curb unintended acceleration
Filed under: Safety, Technology, Toyota In recent years, Toyota vehicles have been involved in a number high-profile accidents blamed on "unintended acceleration." And whether the root cause of these incidents boils down to driver error or faulty mechanicals, Toyota is working to address the issue. One of two new systems in development at Toyota goes by the name of Intelligent Clearance Sonar. The technology is meant to reduce parking lot collisions by detecting objects out of the driver's sight. If an imminent collision is detected, the ICS system will automatically hit the brakes, reduce engine power and sound an alarm. Toyota's other new safety system is Drive-Start Control. According to the automaker, if the system senses that the wrong gear has been selected from Park while the driver is pressing on the accelerator, a warning is flashed on the dashboard and engine output is reduced "to limit a sudden start or acceleration." There are a number of scenarios where the system might kick in - for example, if a driver bumps into something while reversing, panics and shifts into a forward gear without letting up on the accelerator, DSC would take over. While such research is commendable, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has called for making such systems mandatory in coming years. And more and more automakers are investigating and/or committing to developing electronic failsafes to deal with unintended acceleration. Last month, Nissan announced a camera-based system designed to curb pedal misapplication. Toyota says the systems will be available on future vehicles soon, a development that could give it a leg up on the competition if/when new federal rules are approved. Report: EPA denies ethanol waiver requested by governors and farm groups
Filed under: Ethanol, Flex-Fuel, Legislation and Policy Ten governors and a coalition of farm groups were upset on Friday to see the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deny requests that corn production requirements be waived. While corn farmers were likely glad to see the ruling, farmers in the poultry, hog and cattle industries were not. They're seeing big increases in corn-based feed costs in this drought-heavy year as corn is diverted for ethanol used in vehicle fuel. The EPA says that the Renewable Fuel Standard must be enforced and conditions are not present to qualify for the waiver. Governor Mike Beebe (D-AK) had sent a letter to EPA in August calling for the waiver due to a "terrible toll" on animal agriculture in Arkansas and that consumers would be paying higher food prices because of it. Beebe was joined by governors from North Carolina, New Mexico, Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Utah and Wyoming. The EPA said that the agency had studied the effects of waiving the requirement and determined it would have had little impact on corn prices. The EPA recognized this year's drought has created hardship in several sectors including livestock producers. However, extensive data analysis made clear to the agency that Congressional requirements for a waiver had not been met and that following the requirements of the Renewable Fuel Standard will have little, if any, impact on corn prices. Most of corn ethanol is blended into gasoline and makes up 10 percent of what comes out of the pump in the US, and this level will be increasing to E15, or 15 percent ethanol, in some areas. It is tough to get a waiver. The EPA can grant one if it determines that the set ethanol production volume would "severely harm" the economy of a state, region or the entire country. The RFS requires that 13.2 billion gallons of ethanol be produced by this year, and 15 billion gallons by 2015. A coalition of livestock, poultry and dairy organizations were upset with the ruling. "We are extremely frustrated and discouraged that EPA chose to ignore the clear economic argument from tens of thousands of family farmers and livestock and poultry producers," the coalition said in a statement. The farmers and governors had been joined by environmental groups in opposition to increased ethanol production. The funds will go to the American Red Cross and be earmarked for Hurricane Sandy relief. Ferrari started bidding on the F12 at $315,888, but the most powerful production model from the company fetched $1.125 million by the time the gavel fell through bids sourced both in person and over the phone. The company also managed to raise a further $345,000 in in-kind donations before the auction began, and donors gave an additional $50,000 during the event itself. Ferrari debuted the F12 Berlinetta at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, and the company is set to deliver its first model to a US customer in the second quarter of 2013. The automaker reminds its fans that it is still possible to donate to the Hurricane Sandy relief fund by visiting a special Ferrari section of the American Red Cross page. Part of Harley's Dark Custom line and a tribute to choppers of a Nixon-era yore, the V-Twin gets throwbacks like a 2.1-gallon "peanut" gas tank, downsized ape-hanger handlebars, chrome laced wheels on whitewall Dunlap bias-ply tires, chopped rear fender, a solo seat and a "Bigflake" paint schemes. And yes, you can get a chromed sissybar. But instead of using a seventies biker type for riding duty in the vid, Harley went for a hipster - the slid-back beanie and the European stove top coffeemaker gave it away. We're not sure that's the target audience, but it's a neat vid and a cool looking bike anyway. Official: NASCAR Sprint Cup crowns winner as Dodge bows out of series [spoilers]

The automaker snagged the 2012 Sprint Cup series championship on Sunday when Penske and Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag at the Ford EcoBoost 400 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The championship win marks the fifth such title for Dodge and the company's first since 1975. That last championship victory came at the hands of none other than Richard Petty. That's a long time, but Penske has been waiting a spell for its first series win, too. The team first entered the NASCAR Sprint Cup series in 1972 but never quite managed to seal the deal. In 1993, Rusty Wallace brought the team as close as it ever came: second place. But after overcoming a few mechanical issues early in the season, Keselowski and Penske stayed consistent enough to see themselves seeded fourth in the Chase. After taking the checkers at Chicagoland, Keselowski became an early favorite for the win, and his performance at Homestead-Miami sealed the deal. Filed under: LA Auto Show, Budget, Sedan, Hatchback, FordFord has confirmed that it will bring its 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine to the United States under the hood of its 2014 Fiesta, previewed in these photos by the global model that debuted in Paris earlier this year. We pretty much knew this was coming, and we'll see the tiny mill on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show next week - assuming Ford's luggage made it there unscathed.Official EPA certification has not been completed, but Ford expects the EcoBoost-equipped Fiesta to be the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car sold in the US. In other words, we're looking at fuel economy around the 45-mile-per-gallon mark. The 1.0L engine is projected to produce 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque under the hood of the Fiesta - gains of three horses and 36 lb-ft versus the current car's 1.6-liter naturally aspirated four. Earlier this year, we had a chance to drive a Euro-spec Focus with the same 1.0-liter engine, and said that while it was pretty good, the lighter Fiesta figures to be a better fit for this mill here in the States. Spy Shots: 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet spotted testing
Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury The Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup is poised to receive a facelift soon, and while we've already seen what the new sedan will look like courtesy of an undisguised look at the E63 AMG, we're now getting our first look at the updated E-Class Cabriolet. Given that 2013 models are already available, we expect the redesigned E-Class to be out for the 2014 model year. All E-Class models will be getting a new face with smoother lines including reshaped headlights, a less angular front fascia and a more upright, single-bar grille, but it looks like the Coupe and Cabriolet will be getting fewer updates to the rear of the car. While the sedan will get smoother rear doors and quarter panels to eliminate that flared wheel arches, this cue is still apparent on the convertible (as well as the coupe and station wagon). Report: Will Hyundai's MPG malfunction give ground to Honda?

The same notion can be applied to the automotive marketplace, where bad press for one brand presents an opportune time to capitalize for another. A new Bloomberg puts forth a potential automotive example of this - fallout stemming from the recent Hyundai and Kia fuel economy debacle. The Korean automakers were recently marred for incorrectly calculating their fuel economy data, resulting in the downward adjustment of the fuel economy figures for many of their most popular models. While this represents a setback for Kia and Hyundai, brands like Toyota and Honda are looking to gain ground on the two Korean marques, which have been catching up to Japan's volume automakers thanks to their radically improved lineups. In 2010, Hyundai began touting its lineup as the most fuel-efficient in America. This stirred emotions at Honda, a brand that had been the nation's top performer in fuel economy for 33 years. With this recent adjustment by Hyundai, Honda is evidently hoping to wear the fuel efficiency crown once again. According to the report, the Korean automakers' errors came in the EPA's "coastdown" test, in which a test car is driven to 80 mph, put in neutral and "coasted" to 9 mph. Hyundai admits this part of the test was not performed correctly. According to Sung Hwan Cho, president of Hyundai's US technical center, "These were just honest procedure errors in a very complex testing process." Adding to Honda's opportunity is the recently previewed 2013 Honda Civic, set to go on sale the same day it is revealed at this month's LA Motor Show. The 2012 model came in for harsh criticism from the automotive press, though the model's sales proved largely unaffected by the controversy. Official: Audi confirms four new TDI diesel models headed for US
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Sedan, Crossover, Audi, DieselAudi has thrilled the diesel fanatics among us this afternoon, by announcing its intentions to show a whopping five TDI diesel-empowered vehicles (four new) at the upcoming LA Auto Show. TDI versions of the Audi's A6, A7, A8 sedans and its Q5 crossover will be new additions to the automaker's US arsenal, while the Q7 TDI will continue as well. The news isn't completely unexpected, as we received confirmation previously that the A6, A8 and Q5 were all on the way with diesel, but the A7 receiving the engine is news, as is the reveal and on-sale timing. Our previous report indicated that the A4 would also be coming over with TDI motivation, but the Audi announcement makes no such promises. All of the models in question will be making room for Audi's 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged diesel under their hoods. The powerplant makes some 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and is estimated to return 24 miles per gallon city and 36 mpg highway when installed in the A8. The Q7 is good for 19/28 city/highway mpg. The A8 TDI will be the first of the new diesels to become available in the 2014 model year, with that executive sedan being offered for sale in the spring of 2013. The A7, A6, and Q5 TDIs will roll into dealerships in the fall of next year, and the Q7 TDI is, of course, on sale right now for a stating price of $52,000.
