Official: 28 "flexible ladies" cram into a Mini Cooper
Filed under: Etc., Hatchback, Mini, Humor The Mini Cooper is now confirmed as a great car with which to pick up chicks-up to 28 of them at a time, to be specific. That's the number of limber ladies you can fit in a Mini, as proven earlier this week in London. The flexible females used every available space in the car, including the footwells and dashboard, to set the Guinness World Record for the most people inside a 2012 Mini. They beat their own previous record of 27, set last year. Organizer Dani Maynard said before the attempt that the girls had undergone extra training and stretching since last year's record-breaking stunt. "While we have not quite been able to fit any of the girls into the Mini's glove box, there is a surprising amount of space to utilise," she told UK news site Metro. After successfully extricating themselves from the new Mini, the team sprinted over to a TV studio where 23 of them managed to squeeze into an original, much smaller classic Mini. That was enough to break the previous record of 21. Video: Why a Florida field is important to your car's paint
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Technology If you've ever wondered how automakers know their paints will stand up to the test of time, a field in Florida may have your answer. Manufacturers routinely turn to Q-Lab, a facility situated on a 20-acre open field just outside of Homestead, Florida for durability testing. There, the company's engineers apply automotive paint to twelve-inch by 4-inch metal panels and leave them to bake in the unforgiving sun. The facility's location next to Everglades National Park is ideal for testing paint fade and durability due to the high humidity, heat and sunlight. Owner Mike Crewdson says the samples may spend as long as seven to 10 years baking in the elements before they ever get sprayed on a production vehicle. Technicians receive a staggering amount of data on weather and paint conditions every day-up to 40,000 readings. Various manufacturers participate in these evaluations, but General Motors says it has been testing paint like this since the 1920s. Renault brought a little automotive flair to the this year's show by teaming with French pastry chef Pierre Hermé to create a Renault Twizy covered with macarons. Official: NYPD buys mobile surveillance vans to watch Sandy-hit neighborhoods
Filed under: Minivan/Van, Government/Legal, Ford, Police/EmergencyTo keep an eye on some of the neighborhoods hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, the New York City police department has acquired a small fleet of innovative surveillance vans. Built by TerraHawk, LLC of Dallas, Texas, the NYPD is using four Mobile Utility Surveillance Tower (MUST) vans to patrol some areas of the city that lost power. Animal New York says that the vehicles are being used in Staten Island, Far Rockaway, Coney Island, and Howard Beach. The idea of mobile surveillance is nothing new, since we've all seen those little trailers in mall parking lots around the holiday shopping season, but TerraHawk has created an all-in-one vehicle that can be deployed to an area quickly. Driving around, the MUST looks like a raised-roof, four-wheel-drive Ford E-Series, but when needed, a tower extends from the rear of the van using scissor lifts to a height of 25 feet. Raising the pod takes less than two minutes, and it can be used in areas with winds of up to 40 miles per hour. For added stability, built-in jacks are used at each corner of the 9,600-pound van. When parked, the MUST uses an efficient lithium-ion battery pack rather than a generator, which would burn fuel and create exhaust emissions. How much does one of these eye-in-the-sky trucks cost? Well, in base form (without any on-board technology, ballistics protection or four-wheel drive), they start anywhere from $150,000 to $175,000. Ford Thunderbird y Mustang, MINI, Chevrolet Camaro, Fiat 500 o Volkswagen Beetle son sólo algunos ejemplos -algunos con más éxito que otros- de cómo una marca reiventa su futuro "actualizando" su pasado. Volkswagen, a través de su estudio de diseño californiano, abrió las hostilidades con su Concept One, que dio lugar a la fabricación en serie del New Beetle. Éste tuvo un éxito relativo en Europa, y casi nulo en Alemania, pero fue todo un éxito en Estados Unidos. Y es que apelar al pasado en marketing es un arma de doble hilo. En Alemania, Francia y en el norte de Europa, la generación de los mayores no lo vieron con buenos ojos, pues el Käfer (Escarabajo) era el símbolo de una ideología que combatieron duramente (recordemos que fue un encargo de Hitler a Ferdinand Porsche en el marco del programa Volksgemeinschaft). Para la generación de mis padres era el coche de los hippies, todo un icono de los años 70. Y para mi generación, pues...no nos dice nada. Sí, el concepto es simpático, pero no pasa de ahí. El New Beetle se mantuvo en producción hasta 2011, con unas ventas estancadas tras pasar el efecto moda de los primeros años. Quizá su precio más elevado y su versatilidad muy inferior con respecto al Golf -modelo con el que compartía toda la parte técnica- hizo que muchos prefiriesen el nuevo icono de Volkswagen y el de las nuevas generaciones, el dichoso Golf. Con este Beetle MkII, Volkswagen quiere dejar atrás la imagen asociada al "Flower Power" de la primera generación y atraerse los favores de una clientela más versada en el automóvil; ya no tiene que ser un simple objeto de moda, sino un coche con identidad propia.
