| Posted: 16 Nov 2012 05:19 PM PST  Video: Watch Subaru's awesome projection-mapped 2014 Forester intro Filed under: Videos, Crossover, Subaru Automakers are always trying to find creative ways to introduce new products to the media, and Subaru definitely came up with an interesting idea to unveil the new 2014 Forester earlier this week. With a large screen and two covered Foresters, Subaru used projection mapping to make for one eye-catching presentation. Using a computer to project images onto an object, Subaru was able to "build" its new Forester on stage using robots, lasers and fans. The whole process is fun to watch, but the coolest part of the video is watching a set digital robotic arms build the Forester's drivetrain and then throw it underneath the awaiting crossover. The Austrian motorcycle manufacturer showed off its newest concept at the 2012 EICMA International Motorcycle Show, and it boasts an extra 100cc of displacement over the LC8 mill in the 1190 RC8 R on which the prototype is based. That means there's a full 180 horsepower on hand to kick you down the track, and given the impressive efforts at weight saving engineers implemented on the concept, something tells us the sprint to 60 mph will take no time at all. KTM hasn't released a specific curb weight, but the 1290 Duke R Prototype features a chrome-molybdenum steel tube frame, a light-weight alloy single-sided swing arm and lightened alloy wheels. That's fun and all, but not nearly so interesting as the way this bike sounds. With that big V-Twin barking through an Akrapovic exhaust, the bike sounds like a 55-gallon drum full of lionesses on meth. And with tight supplies of its Pentastar V6, the company is also boosting output at its Mack Engine plant. The expansions will add 1,250 jobs and are part of a $238 million investment by Chrysler in the Detroit area. Warren's third shift will begin work sometime in the spring, a Chrysler rep told Automotive News. Mack's increased Pentastar production a could include both 3.6 and 3.2-liter engines. Ahora la firma nipona ha mostrado la primera imagen de la variante que será comercializada en Estados Unidos y que en Los Ángeles debutará ante el público. Básicamente es idéntico al que conocemos y salvo la incorporación de las ópticas adaptadas a la legislación del país, el diseño de las llantas y la paleta de colores, todo seguirá igual. Lo más importante respecto al Outlander de anterior generación es que puede llevar mucho equipamiento de seguridad, destacando la introducción del sistema de alerta de cambio de carril, control de crucero adaptativo y sistema de mitigación de impactos frontal. Bajo el capó podrá adquirirse con motores mejorados y tecnología MIVEC, pero de momento no podemos adelantar más información sobre ellos. En unos días saldremos de dudas con todos los detalles. | Posted: 16 Nov 2012 03:46 PM PST  First Drive: Chevy Spark Electric Vehicle Prototype Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chevrolet, AutoblogGreen ExclusiveWhy This Little Car Previews Big Things For GM General Motors representatives handed out a lot of press releases in Sausalito, CA this week as part of GM's Electrification Experience. There was one about the company's plans to sell 500,000 vehicles with "electrification" by 2017. There was one about GM's work with ABB on reusing advanced vehicle batteries in grid storage applications (see also this). There was one about the motor in the Chevrolet Spark EV. And another about the battery. We'll talk about some of this information, but you can read them at the end of this post. What was much more interesting were two things that can't fit onto pieces of paper*: the GM's new wholethroated embrace of vehicles with plugs (wither hydrogen, wither biofuels?) and some lightly camo'ed electric Spark prototypes with the keys in them. The message of the Electrification Experience was very obviously how GM's success with the Chevrolet Volt is guiding the company's fuel economy efforts. One can quibble about missed sales targets or too-high prices, but the fact remains that the Volt is the best-selling plug-in vehicle in the U.S. right now, and it has given GM a strong position from which to move forward in the fast-changing automotive landscape. As they wrap up their second year of sales, plug-in vehicles are far ahead of where regular hybrids were after their second year a decade ago. And, as Mark Duvall of the Electric Power Research Institute pointed out, 12 percent of all plug-in vehicles in the US were sold in October. The Volt stood at the top of that list. The phrase "learnings from the Volt were 'sprinkled liberally'" was repeated a lot, referring to how the lessons from that project are being used withing GM. As we said earlier, Mary Barra, GM's senior vice president of global product development, said during the event that GM's future "focus" will be on plug-in technology, and at the EE, GM certainly presented its future as something other than "more car than electric." It's always been clear that this anti-EV message, the way GM first advertised the Volt, would prove inconvenient at some point. Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1972, the studio has spent the last four decades designing luxury goods like sunglasses, writing implements and perhaps most famously, watches, as well as a huge selection of industrial products and household goods. The common thread that ties together all of the output of the studio over the years, is an unyieldingly modern and clean aesthetic. The Porsche Design exhibit features some of the seminal works from the studio, including its first project, a watch dubbed simply Chronograph I. The blacked-out timepiece seems fairly run-of-the-mill by today's standards, but was revolutionary in an era where a gold Rolex served as the standard for high-end wrist wear. But after five years, F1 returns to the States with this weekend's race at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Red Bull, sponsor of F1 driver Sebastian Vettel, has put together an interesting set of numbers illustrating the differences between the two racing series. To start with, Formula 1 has just 24 drivers, while NASCAR fields 50 entrants. Stock cars can reach speeds of about 200 miles per hour, just a bit slower than F1's 205. But NASCAR drivers experience only about 2Gs of lateral force during, at most courses, only four left-hand turns. F1 drivers endure 5Gs in multiple left-and right-hand turns. The Daytona 500, NASCAR's best-attended venue, counted 182,000 fans this year. Formula 1's biggest attendance is at the Australian Grand Prix where 298,000 fans came out to watch. Those fans helped finance F1's best-paid driver, Fernando Alonso. He makes $37 million a year. NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Jr. pulls in $28 million. That's an average of $1.85 million per race for Alonso, who only competes in 20 events. Earnhardt Jr., however, has 36 races to drive in and averages about $778,000 a race. Estéticamente idéntico al "concepto", el Crosstour ha ganado en personalidad y cuenta con un diseño más dinámico. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, who in March forecast that the automaker would double Leaf sales in the US in 2012, is finally admitting that his goal won't be met, The Detroit News reports. Ghosn specifically said Nissan's target of about 20,000 units would "not be reached," the publication reported, citing an interview Ghosn conducted with Bloomberg Television. Last year, Nissan sold 9,679 Leafs domestically, but sales lagged for much of 2012. Demand picked up more recently, as the Leaf boosted October sales by 76 percent from a year earlier to 1,579 units, the second-best Leaf sales month ever. Still, Nissan, which in October unveiled its first global ad campaign, has sold just 6,791 Leafs in the US so far this year. The automaker can tease us all they want with word of a "new compact sports car," but we know what the score is: the new Cayman is on the way, and we're ready for it. That said, no one has seen what the next-generation of the sub-911 coupe looks like... that is, until now. Photos of the new Cayman, taken by Instagram user "Frod1966," have popped up online. The hardtop Porsche was photographed in a warehouse of sorts, and still has the packing wraps on the headlights and taillights. It can be seen next to a 911 Coupe, so perhaps this duo is, in fact, on its way to the LA Show? While design elements like the teardrop roof and pronounced rear fenders are retained from the outgoing model, the new Cayman features updates shared with the latest Boxster, such as the gaping air intake ahead of the rear wheels and a spoiler that melds seamlessly into the taillights. While the base model of the Cayman will likely get the 265-horsepower 2.7-liter flat-six engine, the dual center tailpipes and larger front air intakes suggest that this may be the Cayman S, complete with a 3.4-liter boxer-six making 315 horsepower. Viendo el programa de televisión "Control de Aduanas" está claro que los agentes de aduanas de cualquier aeropuerto del mundo deben ver pasar de todo en las maletas de los pasajeros. Pero quizá no un motor de automóvil en el equipaje de mano... Y esa es la idea -genial- de Ford para enviar su 3 cilindros 1.0 Ecoboost de Detroit al salón de Los Angeles. Uno de sus empleados fue enviado a California con el bloque motor en su maleta. El truco, en un país donde cualquier cosa más pequeña que un 6 cilindros no es digno de mención, es justamente enfatizar el reducido tamaño, peso y ahorro de combustible que supone el motor Ecoboost. Y es que lanzar al mercado estadounidense un motor de 3 cilindros y de 1 litro de cilindrada es todo un acontecimiento. El siguiente movimiento de Ford será demostrar que mantiene una potencia similar a la de sus rivales, pero con un consumo inferior. I'd have been no more flummoxed if Noah's Ark had floated past on a river of rainbows skippered by a pair of unicorns. I had heard, off in the distance, a rumbling I couldn't quite place. I'd know the basstone of overhead-valve V8 mills from America if I heard them in my sleep, and a quick pinch to the fleshy part of my forearm proved that I was, for better or for worse, wide awake. No, not from America. The sound continued, louder and more insistent as more engines were fired; clearly not the shriek that accompanies the spinning guts of an Italian 12-cylinder engine, either. And then the unmistakable whine of a supercharger. My walk turned into a quick jog, and then an all-out sprint. I went out in search of the mysteriously glorious sound of internal combustion. What I stumbled upon is, quite literally, the stuff of legends. It's true: One-horned horses have managed to master the art of ark wrangling. How else could I be seeing a brace of open-wheel Silver Arrows, shivering with every percussion of compression, all hailing from 1934 to 1939 and ready to race? Gridbot suggests SAE/CHAdeMO fast charger Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Carbon OffsetPerhaps the clash between CHAdeMO and SAE Combo fast charger standards can be resolved by free market enterprise. For example: The Equinox 50kW fast DC charger, which "will be the first unit on the market to combine both CHAdeMO and Combo protocols," according the GRIDbot website. Equinox is being developed by GRIDbot and IES-Synergy through a strategic partnership to help deployment of electro-mobility in North America. GRIDbot is distributing and servicing IES' fast chargers. The Equinox will likely be the first to combine the two connector standards into a single wired connection and a single station, enabling power flow and communications for any modern plug-in vehicle (adapter required for Tesla models). It should be available on the North American market during the first quarter of 2013. GRIDbot and IES say the new chargers will be delivered through the Plug-n-Ride Network that will process nationwide financial transactions, data management and reporting and record carbon reductions for carbon credit data collection. Users of the system will be able to upgrade at a later date to access vehicle-to-grid capabilities. Japanese automakers, particularly Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi, are supporting the CHAdeMO standard, which has been in use primarily in Japan since 2010. SAE Combo supporters such as BMW, Volkswagen, Ford and General Motors, prefer having one port to charge at both Level 2 and DC fast charge. CHAdeMO requires an extra port to accommodate fast charging. The battle is on for which protocol will dominate EV fast charging networks. Small, inexpensive cars equal small profits. The mathematics in today's marketplace simply can't be argued, and the result, as buyers increasingly switch from trucks, truck-based 'utes and big family cars into smaller sedans and hatchbacks, is less earning potential for full-line automakers. Like Ford, for instance. Citing the rising trend of smaller cars and crossovers, Ford Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields warned that fourth-quarter earnings will be down compared to last year. Smaller profits in the US market are one thing; an even bigger problem is the almost complete lack of profit margin in South America and huge multi-billion-dollar losses in Europe, where economies are in crisis and automakers are laying off workers and closing plants. Hoy lo que te traemos es una primera imagen del modelo de producción sin camuflaje capturada en un vídeo presentación aunque es justo decir que al estar bastante borrosa no se aprecian todos los detalles. Lo que sí observamos es el notable aumento de longitud, algo que queda patente en el tercer volumen. Compartirá plataforma con los Golf, León y A3, y por esta razón su mayor tamaño hace que veamos un voladizo posterior quizás algo exagerado. Pese a que no vemos el frontal, casi con seguridad seguirá el estilo estrenado en los Rapid, con faros rasgados y una parrilla cromada más estrecha. Bajo el capó no habrá grandes sorpresas y los motores ya vistos en los León, A3 y Golf se repetirán en el checo (TSI y TDI con hasta 184 CV). Las fotos oficiales posiblemente sean presentadas en diciembre, si bien su puesta de largo se retrasará hasta el Salón del Automóvil de Ginebra. In case you readers are worried about how guests will manage without chiseled Italian deckhands in epaulets, not only has Frankl promised that "the elements of decadence and luxury and coolness and exclusivity are all there," guests will get to guzzle 24-karat gold-infused champagne. | Posted: 16 Nov 2012 10:21 AM PST  Video: 2013 Toyota RAV4 teased ahead of LA debut Filed under: LA Auto Show, Videos, Crossover, Toyota We'll get our first glimpse of the all-new 2013 Toyota RAV4 at the Los Angeles Auto Show in a couple of weeks (unless the new crossover falls victim to a case of internet leakage), and to keep our interest piqued, Toyota has released this brief teaser video for its new small CUV. There really isn't a whole lot to be seen in the video, save a few quick glimpses of the new car including the headlight/grille shot you see above. To hear Toyota tell it, the 2013 RAV4 is "a new generation rewriting the rules of style, embodying sophistication and strength - a dynamism that adapts to the changing pace of life." Whatever that means. We've spied the 2013 RAV4 on a couple of occasions now, and even in its heavily camouflaged state, we can see that its design will indeed follow that of the 2012 Camry. As for other details surrounding the new model, we don't have anything concrete. Powertrains are expected to be of the four-cylinder variety (including a possible hybrid), and new technology like Toyota's Entune system will likely be worked into the redesigned interior.
