Fiat releases first 500e images ahead of LA spotlight
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Hatchback, Electric, FiatFiat won't officially pull the wraps off of its all-electric 500e until the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, but we now have a pair of official images that show the little orange shocker both inside and out. All of the details surrounding the new 500e are still under embargo until the debut, and as of this writing, Chrysler will only confirm that the car will go on sale in California sometime in 2013. The automaker will also show the car this weekend at the American Music Awards on the "green carpet" this Sunday, November 18.From what we can see in these photos, the 500e doesn't look vastly different from other Fiat 500 models, save the redesigned lower front fascia (in contrasting white), lower side sills, aero underbody lip, and more wind-friendly wheels presumably wrapped in low rolling-resistance tires. Inside, the Fiat's cabin has been done up in a similar white-and-orange motif. Other changes to the interior include a redesigned gauge cluster and the addition of push-buttons where the normal gear shifter would be. There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the 500e leading up to its launch, including reports stating that Chrysler is only making the car to appease the folks of California and that the company will lose something in the area of $10,000 on each EV it builds. We'll see how the little electron-eater fares when it launches next year. Until then, sight tight - we'll have the full skinny on the 500e in the coming weeks. For now, scroll down to read Chrysler's very brief statement.Continue reading Fiat releases first 500e images ahead of LA spotlightFiat releases first 500e images ahead of LA spotlight originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 00:01:00 EST.
Video: Teens hate riding the bus, but love drifting in it
Filed under: Etc., Videos, Humor The last time we saw a bus drifting it was in a commercial for public transportation in Denmark. The last time we saw Nitro Circus it was waging off-road paintball battles by land and by air. Combine the two and what do you get? An off-roading school bus that can drift in a parking lot and in the mud, but not before setting the whole rear end on fire. Kids would never be late to school if they got this kind of ride. Check out the gliding, patriotic coach you wish you had in the video below.Continue reading Teens hate riding the bus, but love drifting in itTeens hate riding the bus, but love drifting in it originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 19:59:00 EST. Piaggio Group brings the goods to EICMA 2012
Filed under: Europe, Motorcycle From the adorable Vespa 946 to the brawny Moto Guzzi California 1400 and the go-anywhere Aprilia Caponord 1200, the Piaggio Group came to the 2012 EICMA International Motorcycle Show armed with an array of hardware. When it comes to that plucky Vespa 946, engineers approached the bike with an eye toward incorporating modern technology and efficiencies to a classic design. The result is a scooter with all LED lighting and an engine capable of yielding 129 miles per gallon. That figure is thanks in part to a new focus on weight savings. The 946 ditches steel for aluminum in its side plates, fenders and seat for the first time. Too demure for your tastes? The Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring and Custom models boast the largest production twin-cylinder engine ever built in Europe, according to the company. At 1380 cc, the big twin cranks out 96 horsepower and 88 pound-feet of torque, but it's the impressive amount of detail lavished on the bikes that make them special. Moto Guzzi went so far as to screen print lettering on the machine's valve covers for a little extra flair. Take some time to chew on the gallery above. You'll be glad you did. Finally, the 2013 Aprilia Caponord 1200 offers adventure riders an alternative to all those BMW GS, KTM Adventure and Triumph Tiger models rolling around. The Caponord 1200 uses the frame from the company's Dorsoduro 1200 paired with a 1197 cc V-twin engine. There's 128 horsepower and 85 lb-ft of torque to be had from the configuration, and engineers lavished the bike with a raft of rider aids. Those include traction control, ride-by-wire, separate engine maps and dual-channel ABS, to name a few. Shovel out a few extra dollars, and Aprilia will serve up the company's semi-adaptive suspension as well. Riders facing down cooler weather will also appreciate the adjustable windshield and heated grips. Again, be sure to scroll through the high-res galleries above and below to take in all the incessantly Italian detailing.Piaggio Group brings the goods to EICMA 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 19:31:00 EST. Report: Carlos Ghosn remains optimistic on Nissan's EV sales forecast
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Infiniti, NissanNissan Motor Co. CEO Carlos Ghosn continues to be optimistic and ambitious about his company's mission to make Nissan and Renault electric vehicles (EVs) reach strong sales numbers in key global markets. In fact, he doesn't seem fazed that Nissan is selling fewer Leafs in the US this year compared to 2011. In fact, Ghosn retains the same mood and outlook for Nissan's overall EV sales in the US: hitting 10 percent market share by 2017 (eight percent globally), even though it's dropped to 7.9 percent in the US for the first 10 months of 2012, down from 8.2 percent at the end of 2011. Ghosn sat down in Yokohama, Japan, at Nissan's headquarters, to answer questions from Automotive News Asia editor Hans Greimel, including how he sees the political strife between China and Japan causing anti-Japanese product backlash with Chinese consumers. It is a going concern, as is the financial downturn in Europe, but Ghosn sees the US market as a vital part of Nissan's near-term future. Ghosn is not getting bummed out by lower-than-2011 sales for the Leaf in the US - reaching only 6,791 units sold through October versus the full year-target of 20,000 and the 8,048 sold in the first 10 months of last year. Global sales growth will come through mass marketing the electric Renault Zoe, three other Renault EVs, and "opening a lot of doors for the Leaf." The Infiniti LE electric luxury car also plays into the marketing strategy. Zero emissions, for me, is here to stay even though it's not selling as well as we thought... And this is totally normal, that we have at least one Infiniti car. It's obviously a flagship car, but it's also a car that will be developed and produced to sell. Ghosn isn't concerned that his company has overinvested in EVs. Nissan thinks it will be selling 500,000 electric vehicles a year. For the short term, he's not backing off the claim that Nissan will sell 1.5 million electric vehicles across its brands by 2015. As for global markets, he does see other countries as being far ahead of the US when it comes to promoting sustainability: We're following carefully what's going on in China. We're following very carefully the new incentives that are in France to encourage electric cars. No matter what, the United States is going to have to embrace electric cars in a way that is more sustainable. Japan is already doing it. The Leaf is making the company more competitive and "putting our act together," Ghosn said.Carlos Ghosn remains optimistic on Nissan's EV sales forecast originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 19:31:00 EST. Teased: Mitsubishi previews 2014 Outlander and 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Crossover, Mitsubishi We've seen the new Mitsubishi Outlander in European form a few times already, but the 'ute has yet to make its roaring debut in the States. That's soon to be rectified, as Mitsubishi has formally announced plans to show the US-sped 2014 Outlander at the upcoming LA Auto Show. Mitsubishi promises that the 2014 Outlander will be "among the most fuel-efficient compact [crossovers] with seven-passenger seating as standard." In addition to its new aerodynamic bodywork, the 2014 Outlander will bring with it advanced tech like Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control, each with its own fancy sounding acronym. Also on display will be a new Limited Edition of the 2013 Outlander Sport. Said to commemorate the brand's 30 years in America, the LE will boast blacked-out side mirrors, center bumper (whatever that means...), wheel arches and roof rails. Other tweaks include dark-chrome alloy wheels and the necessary badging. Interestinglu, Mitsubishi says it has fitted a new balance shaft to make the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine a smoother operator. Have a look at the darkened teaser of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander above (note: we lightened the image a bit to bring out some detail, click on the image to see the original in high-res), and feel free to peruse the press release below for more.Continue reading Mitsubishi previews 2014 Outlander and 2013 Outlander Sport Limited EditionMitsubishi previews 2014 Outlander and 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 19:00:00 EST. The 2013 Bimota DB11 VLX is a supercharged terror
Filed under: Performance, Europe, Misc. Auto Shows, MotorcycleBimota kicked in the doors at the 2012 EICMA International Motorcycle Show with a whopping 19 models, and while creations like the 1198cc Ducati Testastretta-powered DB11 and the BMW S1000RR-based BB2 are enough get our hearts pumping, the 2013 DB11 VLX can stop them all together. That beast situates the same 1198cc Duc engine between the rails of a custom frame, but bolts on a supercharger for good measure. That's right, there's a blown V-twin dumping 188 horsepower on this bike's rear tire. We'll admit, we're having a hard time wrapping our mind around that sort of lunacy. The DB11 VLX just goes to show no one does insanity with quite the same elegance as the Italians. With 105 pound-feet of torque on hand and a curb weight of under 400 pounds, the DB11 VLX is likely quick enough to carry you from zero to dead faster than anything else in your stable. We approve. Right now, there's no word on how much the machine will set you back, but like most toys worth having, you probably don't have the pennies if you have to ask.The 2013 Bimota DB11 VLX is a supercharged terror originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 18:29:00 EST. Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG Sports Package teased on Facebook
Filed under: Coupe, Sedan, Mercedes-Benz, Design/Style, LuxuryMercedes-Benz has given the world a peek at the upcoming C-Class AMG Sports Package, thanks to a few quick photos on the company's USA Facebook page. Buyers who opt for the kit will get to enjoy seven-spoke, eighteen-inch alloy wheels outside, while the cabin comes decked in all sort of niceties. Red seat belts pair with MB sport seats hemmed in red contrast stitching, and a flat-bottom steering wheel replaces the standard tiller. Otherwise, details are scarce about when we can expect to see the package show up on order sheets or how much it will cost buyers when it does arrive. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz C-Class starts at $35,350, plus a $905 destination fee. You can find out more by heading over to the Mercedes-Benz USA consumer site or checking out the company's Facebook page.Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG Sports Package teased on Facebook originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 18:01:00 EST. Report: US National Parks installing plug-in vehicle chargers
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, USA Drive a Nissan Leaf to see Teddy Roosevelt's "best idea," and save a geyser in the process? That's probably an exaggeration, but there is some version of that thought process behind the move by some US National Parks to install plug-in vehicle charging stations, says the Huffington Post. Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park, Utah's Zion National Park and Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountain National Park are among those adding charging stations in a logical move to encourage fuel-free driving through the parks. In fact, Zion goes one step further by using solar panels to power the charging infrastructure for employee's electric-drive vehicles. Black Bear Solar Institute has provided 24 stations along the Tennessee routes leading to Great Smoky Mountain, which is visited by as many as 10 million people annually. In all, there were about 14,000 electric-vehicle charging vehicles across the US as of October 31, according to the US Department of Energy.US National Parks installing plug-in vehicle chargers originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 18:00:00 EST. Gallery: Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 RoadsterContinue reading Vídeo: El Lamborghini Aventador Roadster y su techo desmontableVídeo: El Lamborghini Aventador Roadster y su techo desmontable originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 18:00:00 EST. Auctions: Aston Martin DB5 stunt doubles in Skyfall created by 3D printers
Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Technology, Aston Martin, Celebrities, TV/Movies This is a spoiler alert: stop reading now if you haven't seen Skyfall and don't want to know anything about it. There are five major stars in Skyfall, only four of them human. The fifth is the Aston Martin DB5 that makes a return to the series as a gadget car for the first time since Thunderball. The plot calls on bad things to happen to the 1964 platinum coupe, but seeing as it's worth $4.6 million, producers figured it would be better if something happened to a facsimile of the 1964 platinum coupe. Enter Voxeljet, an Augsburg, Germany company specializing in 3D printing. The production team commissioned three one-third scale models of the DB5, and Voxeljet's industrial-sized printers layered up the 18 plastic parts that compose the unfinished model. The models were then sent to Propshop Makers in the UK for finishing work like paint and bullet holes. And then one of them was blown up... Showing just how much the Bond provenance can do for the worth of an object, one of the remaining printed Astons was auctioned by Christie's and fetched £61,250 ($99,041 US), beating its pre-sale estimate by more than 50 percent.Aston Martin DB5 stunt doubles in Skyfall created by 3D printers originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 17:31:00 EST. Video: Watch Sam Hubinette and Jen Horsey run Targa Newfoundland in a Fiat 500 Abarth
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Hatchback, Racing, Fiat We'd grown pretty accustomed to seeing Sam Hubinette sling a Dodge Challenger around a drift course, but the guy knows how to do more than go sideways. Back in September, the Crazy Swede partnered up with Jen Horsey to take on the Targa Newfoundland in a Fiat 500 Abarth in the open class. How'd the team do? The plucky little hatch snagged second place, finishing just one second behind Paul Dyer in his 300 horsepower 2005 Mistubishi Lancer Evo IX. That's no mean feat considering the Abarth puts down just 160 ponies of its own. Fiat worked up a quick video documenting Hubinette and Horsey's efforts over the long week, and you can check it out below. In addition to taking home the silver, the team also walked away with a few other honors, including the Presidents Manufacturers' Challenger award and the Next Generation Challenge title for vehicles with 1.6 liters of displacement and less.Continue reading Watch Sam Hubinette and Jen Horsey run Targa Newfoundland in a Fiat 500 AbarthWatch Sam Hubinette and Jen Horsey run Targa Newfoundland in a Fiat 500 Abarth originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 17:00:00 EST.
Spy Shots: Ferrari F70 spotted in heavy camo around Maranello
Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Ferrari, Luxury Contrary to the hopes of everyone attending the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, The Motor City will not stage the debutante ball of the successor the Ferrari Enzo. Before the Detroit show rumor, it was thought that we'd see the coupe, referred to as the F70, for the first time at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The Geneva timeline makes more sense, seeing the amount and kind of camo the car is still wearing on roads around Maranello, as seen here caught by a man-on-the-street. Copious amounts of hard plastic cladding, the faux-shovel snout and miles of gaffer tape hide the body from view. If Detroit were a go, then we'd expect to see the hybrid supercar out somewhere with the cloth and canvas cladding the Italians switch to when D-Day is close. As it is, other than a new set of wheels, this looks like the same cladding we saw the car wearing in June, when it looked a lot more spiffy. Or maybe not - Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo said earlier this year that "At the end of the year, we'll also be unveiling the new Enzo, a limited series model and our first-ever hybrid car." Voorkom ijskappen, blijf lekker doortrappen
Goed nieuws! Ducati debuts three new bikes at EICMA 2012
Filed under: Performance, Europe, Misc. Auto Shows, Motorcycle The minds at Ducati have been busy lately. The Italian manufacturer pulled back the curtains on three new machines at the 2012 EICMA International Motorcycle Show, including the water-cooled 2013 Hypermotard. Using and 821cc variant of the company's Testastretta 11-degree DS V-twin, the Hypermotard dishes out 110 horsepower and 65.8 pound-feet of torque thanks in part to a smaller bore and longer stroke than the standard 848cc engine. The revised Hypermotard tips the scales at 436.5 lbs fully fueled and boasts Kayaba front forks with 6.7-inches of travel. Out back, a Sachs rear shock serves up 5.9-inches of flex, though the Hypermotard SP delivers more inches in both categories. By most accounts, the Ducati Diavel is as wicked a cruiser as you're likely to find, but that didn't stop engineers from pouring a few tricks from the Ducati Performance line onto the bike. The result is the 2013 Diavel Strada. Designed to serve up easy miles, the new bike offers up a larger windscreen, slightly higher handlebars with heated grips and a gel seat. There's also a higher capacity generator on board to help power additional electronics via two 12-volt ports. Then there's 2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale R. A subtly tweaked version of last year's bike, the 2013 model now features a 500 rpm rev boost thanks in part to light-weight titanium connecting rods and a lightened flywheel. There's also a four-point adjustable swing arm for the first time, and a full race exhaust and ECU helps the bike spit out 201 horsepower on the top end. More importantly, Ducati says the Panigale R now generates 15 percent more mid range power. Want one? Better pull a stinking $29,995 from your wallet.Ducati debuts three new bikes at EICMA 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 16:01:00 EST.
Simplemente impresionante.Gallery: KTM X-Bow RContinue reading Vídeo: El KTM X-Bow RR en el ringVídeo: El KTM X-Bow RR en el ring originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 16:00:00 EST. Video: Fiat shows off performance, efficiency gains of TwinAir engine
Filed under: Hybrid, MPG, Chrysler, Fiat, Natural Gas, Videos Small engine, big pitch. Italian automaker Fiat is using a new video to wax poetic about its TwinAir family of engines designed to boost performance in its smaller cars while cutting fuel use and emissions. The three-plus-minute video, put together by Frame Communication, outlines the TwinAir engines, which range from 65 to 105 horsepower and include a turbocharged version as well as an option that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG). Fiat says the TwinAir engines boost fuel economy and cut emissions by 30 percent compared to similarly-sized mills while providing as much as 120 horsepower per liter of displacement. The engines are adaptable to hybrid use as well. Fiat and its Chrysler affiliate have been eschewing electric-drive powertrains as a method of boosting fleetwide fuel economy in favor of smaller, more technologically-advanced internal combustion engines. For example, in August Fiat unveiled the turbocharged 2013 version of its 500 compact. That model features a detuned version of its 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged inline-four, which boosts horsepower and torque by 34 horsepower and 52 pound-feet from the 2012's non-Abarth version, respectively. You can see Fiat's video below.Continue reading Fiat shows off performance, efficiency gains of TwinAir engineFiat shows off performance, efficiency gains of TwinAir engine originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 15:50:00 EST. Study: Redesigns that worked and flopped determined by new Cars.com index
Filed under: Car Buying, Audi, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Design/Style The 2013 Ford Fusion is probably the latest, greatest example of a completely redesigned car that has evoked widespread calls of "Look at that!" Above its buzzworthy looks, though, Ford will be concerned about how the 2013 Fusion sells and by how much - if at all - it beats sales of the previous version. Cars.com has run the sales numbers on 61 models that have been redesigned in the past four years, ranking them as Winners, Underperformers and Losers depending on how a new-generation model is selling compared to the one it replaces. The rankings are sorted by sales class - small, medium and large sellers - so that the success of a niche sports car is weighted differently than the success of a popular midsize car. Compared to a four-year sales average for redesigned cars in each class, Winners were those who outsold the average, Underperformers didn't make the average but did outperform the previous year's (hence, the previous car's) sales, while Losers couldn't do any better anywhere. Among the most recently introduced winners were the Toyota Camry and the Honda CR-V. The Camry beat the Four-Year Category Average Redesign Increase for large sellers by 2.2 percent, the CR-V managed 0.2 percent. Underperformers included the Audi A6/S6 which, even though it has outsold the previous generation by 58 percent, still isn't getting near the small seller category average of 79.2 percent. The new Hyundai Accent is also considered an underperformer, the new model boosting sales by 5.5 percent - nowhere near the 61.5 percent of the medium seller category average. The only Loser listed in the chart is the Honda Civic, taking one last thrashing before the "honed" 2013 redesign gets a chance to right the ship. As for that Fusion, the 2013 model has strong numbers to follow: the 2010 Fusion was a huge winner, putting up a 55.1-percent increase in the large seller category, beating the average by 33 percent. It only trailed the redesigned 2011 Hyundai Sonata shown above, which pasted the average by 42.5 percent. You can find a few more of the ranked models in Cars.com's chart by heading over to their website.Redesigns that worked and flopped determined by new Cars.com index originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 15:31:00 EST.
