Gallery: Porsche 911 SingerContinue reading Contacto: Porsche 911 SingerContacto: Porsche 911 Singer originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 04:37:00 EST. Sheepo está de vuelta, con un Peterbilt 379
Filed under: Etc. Video: Why you should never let a family member drive your Ariel Atom
Filed under: Motorsports, Convertible, Safety, Videos, Racing Any time you have to hand off the keys to a valued car, it can be a little nerve racking - and with some justification. Just check out this video, which serves as a cautionary tale of sorts. According to its YouTube description, the user, named ShakenBakeRacin, lent his Ariel Atom to his brother and recorded video of him driving the lightweight racer on the north course at VIR - Virginia International Raceway. What was probably not expected was what ensues in the video. The driver is hot on the heels of another Atom when a combined crest-and-curve results in loss of control (okay, in addition to the car getting light, it looks like our driver may have forgotten his track map). The Ariel unceremoniously exits the racing surface. That alone would have been enough justification for the owner to ask for his keys back, but things don't end there. The scant curb weight of the Atom combined with track-minded tires proves a dangerous combination when skating across the grass infield. Considering the wide-open expanses of green space where the Atom could have slowed to a less-dramatic stop, the results feel doubly unfortunate. At the end of the wild ride, is it just us, or does it seem like the frustrated Atom just about spits in frustration? "Ptooey!" Okay, maybe it's just us. Watch the video below and judge for yourself.Continue reading Why you should never let a family member drive your Ariel AtomWhy you should never let a family member drive your Ariel Atom originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 20:00:00 EST. Report: Researchers pressure cook algae into crude oil in one minute
Filed under: Emerging Technologies Researchers at the University of Michigan have discovered a fast way to turn algae into biocrude oil, a clean substitute for conventional crude oil. Chemical engineering professor Phil Savage and doctoral student Julia Faeth were able to pressure cook microalgae in 1,100-degree-Fahrenheit sand for about one minute, converting 65 percent of it into biocrude. It's a revolutionary way to speed up the natural process, given that waiting for dead organisms to decompose can take millions of years. It's a big improvement over the lab's own research. Two years ago, the team was able to speed things up to less than half an hour while converting about 50 percent of the microalgae into biocrude. The researchers have been mimicking the natural process that forms crude oil with marine organisms. Savage and Faeth filled a steel pipe with wet, green microalgae from the genus Nannochloropsis, and pressured it into hot sand. Within a minute, the algae made it to 550 degrees all the way through, and 65 percent of it turned into biocrude. Along with shaving down time in the production process, the researchers are exploring ways for wet algae to cost less than dry algae. Algae biofuel is typically produced as dry algae before extracting biocrude, which costs around $20 per gallon. Savage and Faeth can't yet estimate cost savings for their method, but are assuming that simplifying the process and cutting down production time are likely to bring prices down. It won't be competing directly with dry algae anytime soon. The Michigan researchers used only 1.5 milliliters of microalgae for testing, and still don't know exactly why they were able to convert to biocrude within one minute. Algae biofuels have huge potential for reducing vehicle carbon emissions and dependency on foreign oil, but it will take a while for any version of algae to make it to gas stations - even if you can cook it in a minute.Researchers pressure cook algae into crude oil in one minute originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 19:55:00 EST. Video: Buy a Toyota GT86 and your wife will hate you
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Scion, Subaru, Toyota Marketing can be a very strange business. Convincing a man or woman (or child, really) that they absolutely cannot live without the latest, greatest new bit of technology oftentimes takes a unique approach. In the "online film promoting the Toyota GT86" you'll see below, created by agency Happiness Brussels, men are reverse-psychologied into thinking a new sports coupe will make them more masculine by getting their loved ones to hate them. Or something like that. We think. In any case, we suggest you watch the video below to see how much fun men can have with a GT86 - or Scion FR-S or Subaru BRZ, presumably - at the expense of their significant others. Fair warning: There's a potential Not Safe For Work moment in the ad: beware of a brief male butt shot about 44 seconds in. Marketing. Gotta love it. Unless you're married to a man. Or something like that. We think. Whatever, just watch.Continue reading Buy a Toyota GT86 and your wife will hate youBuy a Toyota GT86 and your wife will hate you originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 19:29:00 EST. Video: Being in Chrysler's Eminem Super Bowl ad changed gospel choir's lives [w/videos]
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Chrysler In 2011, Chrysler unveiled its now-famous "Imported from Detroit" ad during the Super Bowl. The ad that sparked a Motown rallying cry of sorts featured Eminem, the Chrysler 200, and a key musical element; the Selected of God gospel choir. The choir performed Eminem's "Lose Yourself," and in doing so, unwittingly catapulted their careers. The Detroit Free Press has highlighted how the group became involved with Chrysler, and the subsequent fame that came with the ad. Apparently ad agency Wieden + Kennedy was looking to cast genuine Detroiters rather than actors for the ad campaign, and sought out a bellman, waitresses, and a gospel choir. Larry Callahan, director of the Selected of God choir, answered a casting call to audition for the ad. Only days before the ad ran did they know their full role in the TV spot. Apparently, while the choir was rehearsing at Detroit's legendary Fox Theater, Eminem walked in. The director though the rapper's presence would distract the group, but they continued to perform. In reaction to this, the ad's creators changed the concept to its final incarnation. Following the ad, which gained national attention, the choir's fame rose, too. According to Callahan, the number of shows that Selected of God performs per year has gone from a half-dozen to almost 60. The group is debuting its third album, entitled The Evolution II, today, featuring promotion from Walmart and Chrysler, which continues to partner with, and support the choir. Selected of God has performed at the New York Auto Show, as well as at Chrysler-sponsored events. The choir will be performing at the Second Ebenezer Church in Detroit, with the sponsorship of Chrysler. In addition, the Auburn Hills automaker will once again feature the Selected of God choir in a new ad, titled "Big Finish," which is set to air at the end of the year.Continue reading Being in Chrysler's Eminem Super Bowl ad changed gospel choir's lives [w/videos]Being in Chrysler's Eminem Super Bowl ad changed gospel choir's lives [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 19:01:00 EST. How this summer's drought might affect your car's gasoline
Filed under: Government/Legal, Earnings/Financials In 2007, then-president George Bush signed a law that required increased production of ethanol. Swelling ethanol demand for fuel combined with this past summer's drought has driven the price of corn (used to make ethanol) up. In fact, prices have swollen some 400 percent in the last seven years. That's comforting for corn growers, who are dealing with much smaller yields than normal. But it's not comforting for livestock producers, poultry farmers and grocery shoppers. Under the law, the amount of ethanol used in gasoline is supposed to increase to 15.2 billion gallons this year, up from 5 billion in 2007. The Environmental Protection Agency can decide to delay the increase, however, and it has until Tuesday to consider the circumstances. According to The Detroit News, governors from eight states have asked the EPA to waive the ethanol requirements to prevent corn prices from going any higher. They join almost 200 members of Congress, top United Nations officials, two dozen scientists and scores of poultry farmers in opposing the boost in ethanol production. Governors of poultry-producing states Maryland and Delaware say without a waiver, thousands of jobs could be lost. On the other side are corn-producing states and the farmers who live there. They argue a waiver would harm their agricultural income and, in turn, harm their state economies. If a waiver is granted, gas formulations might not be affected at all. E10 gasoline (10 percent ethanol) would still be sold at fuel stations across the nation, but an increase in ethanol production would be delayed. If a waiver is not granted, corn growers will see a demand in their product. And since all that new ethanol has to go somewhere, drivers may see more pumps serving E20 gasoline (20 percent ethanol) which cannot be used in pre-2001 vehicles. How this summer's drought might affect your car's gasoline originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 18:30:00 EST. Official: Chinese vehicle importers settle with EPA, will pay $50k in fines
Filed under: Legislation and Policy, USA A California-based importer of recreational vehicles and motorcycles will pay $50,000 in fines after reaching an agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and US Department of Justice (DOJ) over alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. The vehicles affected include "recreational vehicles, highway motorcycles, and nonroad spark ignition engines." California-based Yuan Cheng International Group Inc. (YCIG) and its successor NST Inc. allegedly imported and sold vehicles that violated Clean Air Act laws, the EPA says. For the five years that ended 2011, the companies, which are now dissolved, imported more than 17,000 non-certified vehicles. The problem is that those vehicles may have emitted carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide above federally acceptable levels. In 2010, NST agreed to pay the state of California $250,000 because of similar allegations. The EPA's press release is available below.Continue reading Chinese vehicle importers settle with EPA, will pay $50k in finesChinese vehicle importers settle with EPA, will pay $50k in fines originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 18:01:00 EST. Report: Mini JCW GP to be hatchback only, no 'Ring record attempt in sight
Filed under: Performance, Hatchback, Mini The 2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP is dropping weight and lowering its lap times, but one thing it won't be losing is its flat roof. Like the original JCW GP package, Evo says that despite the fact that sportier Mini Coupes have been caught testing, the new GP will only be offered in the three-door Cooper hatchback body style. And that's perfectly fine with us.Evo spoke with GP development chief Jorg Weidinger who said that as a part of the car's history, "It was a hatch, it is a hatch and it should stay a hatch." Weidinger also said that Mini is not planning to set any Nürburgring records with the new JCW GP even though earlier reports indicate that the car is a full 20 seconds faster around the 'Ring than its 2006 predecessor. The new Mini John Cooper Works GP weighs 121 pounds less than the John Cooper Works Hardtop, offers a fully adjustable coil-over suspension and it will have a starting price of $39,950, (including $700 for destination) when it goes on sale later this year.Mini JCW GP to be hatchback only, no 'Ring record attempt in sight originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 18:00:00 EST. Official: BMW announces plans for new retro motorcycle
Filed under: Europe, BMW, Motorcycle, Design/StyleBMW is set to honor its long and storied motorcycle history with a new model next year. Stephan Schaller, the president of BMW Motorrad, announced the new bike will bow with an air-cooled, horizontally-opposed two-cylinder boxer engine as a tribute to the R 32. That bike first debuted in 1923 and laid the groundwork for the next 90 years of BMW motorcycle manufacturing. Aside from the sketch you see above, BMW is keeping details about its new bike to itself. We're told information on the creation's model designation, price and launch date will all come soon. Schaller made the announcement at this year's EICMA international motorcycle show in Milan, and we have to say we're fans of the sketch. With its shorty bars, round head lamp and truncated tail section, the bike looks to be everything we love about modern naked bikes with a proper dose of classic flair. Video: Removing Lamborghini Aventador Roadster's top is quite a process
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Videos, Lamborghini, Luxury During an event for what we'll assume are potential buyers for the just-unveiled Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster, a rep demonstrated the installation of the two-piece, 13-pound carbon fiber roof. Guests were told that two people could install both panels in less than a minute. Backing up the claim, it took the rep about two minutes to do it by himself, talking his way through it. It's not the least finicky roof solution we've ever seen, but it sure beats the heck out of installing the cloth roof on the Murciélago LP640-4 Roadster, which involved a piece of canvas and spars, going together like a complex kite (complete with swearing). Just below you'll find two videos, the first of the easier, and more weatherproof Aventador, then the Murci afterward, proving that it ain't always easy being beautiful.Continue reading Removing Lamborghini Aventador Roadster's top is quite a processRemoving Lamborghini Aventador Roadster's top is quite a process originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 16:57:00 EST.
Report: Ecclestone seeking many more US races for F1?
Filed under: MotorsportsBernie Ecclestone is reportedly interested in adding more American Formula One races to the sport's schedule. The CEO was quoted as saying "America is about as big as Europe. So we should have the same number of races [in each]." Since next season will see a total of seven events on European soil, it would seem to indicate Ecclestone is keen to swell the number of American races significantly. The 2013 season was supposed to see US competitions with teams stopping in Austin, Texas at the new Circuit of the Americas and in New Jersey for a race on a public street course. The latter event has been cancelled until at least 2014 due to financial and time constraints. F1 still doesn't draw nearly the attention in the US as it does elsewhere in the world, but sponsors are doubtlessly very aware of the sport's advertising potential in one of the world's largest auto markets. The commercial, known as "The Real Deal," in question has very clearly made an effort to distance itself from any kind of illicit real-world driving, as Toyota is fully aware that British laws forbids that kind of advertising.
