Pues bien, nos ha tocado, por fin, poner las manos encima de un Carrera 4S, con tracción total, un buen puñado de caballos, y en el caso del modelo de las imágenes, con el techo descubierto. Lo cierto es que Porsche nos preparó un programa muy ajustado para probar sus nuevos modelos de tracción total, ya que teníamos para probar de todo: desde los cupé 4 "normales" al 4S cabrioleto hasta arriba de equipamiento y con cambio PDK. Barato el aparato no es (147.863€ para un Carrera 4S Cabrio, opciones a parte). Espacioso tampoco, ya que es un estricto dos plazas más "una". Y no es porque tenga una sola plaza detrás... | Posted: 09 Nov 2012 05:24 PM PST  Dutch fleet owners buying PHEVs for rebates, then using only gas Filed under: EV/Plug-in, MPG, Legislation and Policy, UK Fleet owners in the Netherlands are finding out that you can overshoot the mark by 80 percent in fuel consumption with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Leasing company Arval (which is known in the US as major fleet management and leasing company PHH Arval) surveyed fleets leasing the Opel Ampera, Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and found that they're using, on average, 80 percent more fuel than the fuel economy estimates found in the manufacturers' specifications. This is happening because fleet managers are tapping into the benefits of local rebates for plug-in vehicles but then not, you know, actually plugging in. Government incentives include no purchase tax, zero percent additional tax liability and no road tax until 2016. Some municipalities are offering thousands of dollars in subsidies for the purchase of a plug-in hybrid. They don't appear to be interested in paying for charging stations to tap into the extended range and fuel consumption cost savings. If they really wanted to reduce fuel consumption, these fleets could do better by purchasing more fuel efficient internal combustion engine cars. Arval investigated more than 60 Amperas, Volts, and Prius Plug-ins to see how fleets have been using these plug-in hybrids. While the factory standards are promising - the Prius can consume as low as 2.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers driven (the equivalent of 107 MPGe, per UK testing) and the Ampera and Volt 1.6 liters per 100 kilometers (147 MPGe), according to the automakers, they're not being utilized as plug-ins to get to these results. One Ampera owner in the study was at the other end of the scale, getting 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers driven using gasoline only (so, 30 mpg). Another Ampera driver had a very good experience with the plug-in, and has been able to score 0.4 (one liter per 250 kilometers driven) by charging up the battery at work and home. These cars are starting to see growing sales numbers in the Dutch market. Opel sold 2,500 Amperas and 500 Chevrolet Volts and expects to continue selling 300 per month. Toyota is meeting its schedule and expects to sell 1,500 Prius Plug-in Hybrids this year. Filed under: Aston Martin, Earnings/Financials Just last month, we heard rumors of a possible collaboration between Lotus and Aston Martin, but while we assumed this meant trouble for the Malaysian-owned Lotus, it could have been Aston Martin reaching out looking for a buyer. Businessweek reports five unnamed sources have stated that Investment Dar, Inc., the Kuwaiti-based majority shareholder of Aston Martin, has been reaching out to potential buyers for the brand. It sounds like the leading candidate for a buyer so far is Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., but the hold up so far might be the money Investment Dar is looking to get out of its stake. Having agreed to restructure its $4.9 billion worth of debt, the article says that Investment Dar, holding 64 percent of Aston Martin's shares, is looking to sell its stake for $800 million which compares to the $925 million total price Aston Martin was acquired from Ford Motor Company back in 2007. Instead, the Italian automaker will auction off its all-new flagship in Texas next weekend in an effort to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. According to Ferrari, proceeds from the special event will be donated directly to the American Red Cross (the money will be earmarked specifically to support the relief efforts). The special Ferrari will be painted in Rosso Berlinetta with choice of black or cuoio (read: camel) upholstery. The option is now available to customers. Using a 6.0-liter, V8 engine, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD and GMC Sierra 2500 HD pickups each have a combined range of 650 miles. The conversion to the duel-fueling feature is done by IMPCO. GM in April set the price premium for the bi-fuel option for the Silverado and Sierra HD and said at the time that the option could pay for itself through lower refueling costs in anywhere between one and two years. There are 527 publicly accessible CNG stations throughout the US, according to the Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center. By comparison, there are more than 4,700 electric-vehicle charging stations open to the public. Details, photos and a pre-order form are live on the AM General website. Most of the details are as we reported in August, with a couple of surprises. The C-Series will still be a kit requiring an engine but now starts at $59,995, $995 more than previously reported. The doors and top remain covered in rugged, minimalist, "canvas-style" vinyl, and the aluminum body will be assembled with heat-set adhesive, which will then be put together airplane-style with 2,800 rivets. The bodies will be available with khaki, green or sand-colored paint over the "corrosion-thwarting alodine" treated aluminum panels. The composite hood comes with lights, latches and wiring pre-installed. Inside, four passengers will have high-back cloth seats and air conditioning. Though we previously reported that the interiors won't be trimmed out, C-Series kits will come with a camo-print dashboard to hold the basic gauge package. Options include a Central Tire Inflation System for $1,611 or CTIS with wheels, tires and beadlocks for $6,964, a 12,000-pound winch at $2,249, driveline protection for $985, heated windshields for $946, a geared fan drive (required for engines over 220 horsepower) for $3,588 and front and rear diffs upgraded to Eaton ELocker units for $2,452. The first 50 customers can lock in the $60k price with a 10-percent deposit and can expect to receive their projects as early as next spring. AM's website points out that while all the parts they ship are guaranteed free of defect, once you put them together, the completed vehicle is not warranted by the company. Half-way through this qualifying run on Thursday, a spectacular explosion destroyed his car's Dodge bodywork, engulfing Beckman in a ball of flames while traveling at almost 300 miles per hour. Fortunately, Beckman was not injured in the explosion (although he did lose an eyebrow from the fire) and he actually went on to win the race with a 4.117-second ETA at 273 mph, qualifying him fifth for this weekend's race at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. Despite losing most of the car's body and having a visor covered in oil, Beckman was able to deploy the parachutes and bring was left of his Charger funny car safely to a stop. In the video, you can actually see him shielding the fire from his face as he tries to get the car slowed down, and then once stopped, he hops out of the cockpit waving to the crowd. After the car comes to a rest, we get a good look at how underneath their funny car body shells, these racers actually resemble the classic rear-seat dragsters from the good ol' days. According to ESPN, the team has a spare body for the car and will be able to race. As for the missing eyebrow, well only time will fix that. A coming five-door Cooper S with central exhaust has been spotted out testing, the idea presumably being that it will pose a better challenge to other small, premium hatches in the segment like the A1 Sportback from Audi. Based on the same UKL platform that will support the production version of the BMW Concept Active Tourer, the wheelbase has been lengthened to make more room for rear passengers. It should be revealed on the auto show circuit at some point next year, getting buyers ready for its production in 2014. On the one hand, the tire manufacturer wants to increase its green credentials with its line of Ecopia products. These are low-rolling resistance tires that improve efficiency by around five or six percent and are now available in 50 sizes that fit everything from hybrids to large SUVs. They're even used on all Nissan Leaf electric vehicles. On top of the Ecopia line, Bridgestone has big goals to reduce CO2 emission from its entire products lifecycle by 35 percent (by sales) and improve tire rolling efficiency by 25 percent by 2020 (compared to 2005 numbers). The company is also researching making tires not just from traditional rubber trees (hevea brasiliensis) but alaso from latex found in a native southwest desert plant, guayule, and Russian dandelions. So, if we look at that hand, the company looks pretty green, right? The reality is that it's difficult for Bridgestone to make really big changes. The reality is that it's difficult for Bridgestone to make really big changes. For example, when Bridgestone invited us to visit the future site of its new off-road tire plant in Aiken, SC, we asked if, for example, adding a recycling fee to the sale price of a tire made sense, encouraging more tires to be recycled at the end of life. The problem, we were told, was that competitors might not do that, leaving Bridgestone at a price disadvantage. In short, Bridgestone can lead, but not on everything. Bridgestone's current Aiken tire plant is a mid-size operation, one that can make up to 25,000 tires a day, in sizes from 15 to 20 inches. At that rate, operating 24-7, the plant uses 1,000 pounds of rubber every minute. Most of the plant's raw rubber - which is the sap from the trees, so someone called it "perhaps the most sustainable part of a car" - comes from Indonesia and Liberia. GM is the biggest customer for the finished products, but Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chrysler and Hyundai all get tires from there. Walking around the plant, you see massive machines (mixers that are three stories tall and require 4,000 horsepower to run, for example) and lots of storage space (425,000 tires can be stored in the attached warehouse). It's a big plant, and an expansion is scheduled to be in operation by 2015 to increase capacity. While for us that means carefully calculating our staggered chow-runs to In-N-Out Burger in-between press conferences, for Porsche it involves prepping two more world-class sports cars with which to dominate the competition. In a press release today, Porsche announced that it would be bringing along its 911 Carrera 4 for a North American debut. Having already seen the all-wheel-drive 911 at the Paris Motor Show (hell, we've even driven the thing), the Carrera showing will serve as nothing more than an appetizer to the main course: a world premiere. Right now, the German automaker is saying only that the new car is a "compact sports car." That said, BMW grabbed our eye with its new M Performance steering wheel. Trimmed in carbon fiber and alcantara, the tiller is slick enough, but it also features two readouts to convey all sorts of vehicle information. Two color LED strips at 11 and 1 o'clock swing from green to red with engine rpm to serve as a shift light, and they can also be reconfigured to act as a drag-strip Christmas tree for timing your quarter-mile mile runs. A small LCD display sits at 12 o'clock, and can be set up to convey everything from vehicle speed and g-load to oil and coolant temperature. We're a little less smitten with the notion of shoving yet another display in our faces, but the gadgetry is slick. Of course, the wheel isn't free. BMW offers the wheels on 1 Series, 3 Series and M cars built since 2006, and the upgrade will set you back $1,700. That's a lot of coin for something that won't make you any quicker around your favorite track. Check it out in action in the video below. Filed under: Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Technology, Scion, Subaru, Toyota We happen to like the Toyota GT86 - and, it of course goes without saying that the same applies to the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S, as well - just the way it is. Yes, that includes the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine and its 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm. That said, a little extra power never hurt anybody, right? The most obvious way to add some punch to the GT86 would be with a turbocharger, and that has indeed long been rumored for an STI version of the BRZ. Will Toyota follow suit? According to Top Gear, the answer is no. Says GT86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, "I think 300bhp with a turbo and 200g/km of CO2 would be tasteless in this day and age. And a turbo would mean the loss of the GT86's uniqueness." Perhaps a bit harsh, but there you go. If no turbo, how will Toyota add some punch to its sports car? Possibly with a supercharger? Perhaps not. "We're looking at a next-generation hybrid. More like the TS030 Le Mans Prototype," says the engineer. If you'll recall, the TS030 uses a hybrid engine with a Kinetic Energy Recovery System, more commonly known as KERS. Even more intriguingly, Tetsuya confirmed that there is a GT86 prototype already fitted with a hybrid KERS system, though it's unclear if it is using capacitors or batteries to contain the recaptured energy. | Posted: 09 Nov 2012 11:12 AM PST 2013 Volkwagen Jetta Hybrid a performer in the mountain air Filed under: Hybrid, Volkswagen We've already spent time behind the wheel of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid, but when VW invited us to the high hills of Santa Fe to drive it again, we quickly accepted. After all, this is supposed to be a hybrid without compromise, and that means it should be a car that's fun to drive. On our first drive - in the wintertime, in Germany - we got to experience the mild-mannered fun that VW promises. This time, at elevations between 5,000 and 8,000+ feet above sea level, we were impressed once again with the Jetta - and that's what this is, a Jetta, first and foremost - that's a little bit heavier than the standard (by 221 pounds) but performs so well you don't notice the hybrid bits, most of the time. If you've got energy in the li-ion battery pack when you fire up the car, it will start off in electric mode, and you don't notice the switch to gas power unless you're looking for it. We got 40.4 miles per gallon on a 31-mile trip. That's not quite the 45 mpg that the EPA says the car will get, but that kind of miles in thin air seems pretty good to us. Other journalists with us in New Mexico were recording anywhere between 38 and 47 mpg. Not Toyota Prius numbers, but VW's okay with that. Here are a few other thoughts and bits of information: With the Jetta Hybrid - VW's second hybrid, after the Touareg, which debuted in the fall of 2010 - the German automaker seems to be acknowledging that it needs to compete seriously in the gas-electric space in the US. A slide shown in Santa Fe pointed out that hybrids make up three percent of the US market, while diesels make up just 0.85 percent. VW is also using JD Power numbers that predict a six-percent market share for hybrids in the US in 2020. VW also said, "Jetta Hybrid will allow VW to attract new customers who don't consider TDI as a legitimate rival to hybrids." That said, VW expects the hybrid to make up around five percent of all Jettas sold in the US. VW says that the median age of hybrid buyers is 61 years old. The median age? That kind of surprised us. Speaking of the Touareg, the hybrid powertrain in the Jetta doesn't share bits with the Touareg hybrid. This is a new system developed for this car. The 1.1-kWh battery offers up to 1.2 miles of all-electric operation. Normally, you can go up to 37 miles per hour in EV mode, but if you hit the E-Mode button, this increases to 44 if there is enough power in the pack and the battery temperature is in the right range. In practice, we didn't ever feel like we got that much benefit from E-Mode, but we assume that there will be a few late-night homecomings where this will be beneficial. The small print in the promotional materials say that the base Jetta Hybrid will be available by special order only. First impression, that sound like a bait and switch, so VW can advertise the car at a low price, but when you go to the dealer, that low price is nowhere to be found. We were told that there will be base models in each of VW's sales regions in the US, so anyone who wants the cheapest Jetta Hybrid will be able to test drive one or get it delivered with a day's notice. The Jetta Hybrid requires premium unleaded fuel. Bummer. The made-in-Mexico Jetta Hybrid goes on sale before the end of the year, starting at $24,995, plus destination. The recall extends to 2002-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2003 Liberty models, affecting nearly a million vehicles worldwide. The central recall issue is a faulty sensor in the airbag control module that may result in the inadvertent deployment of front or side curtain airbags while vehicle is in motion. This obviously has the potential to be quite dangerous. Specifically, Liberty vehicles built between January 9, 2001, and March 28, 2003 are in question. As for the Grand Cherokee, potentially affected vehicles were built between February 13, 2001 and May 23, 2003. The number of recalled Jeep vehicles in the US totals 744,822, though when factoring global sales, that number swells to over 919,000.Chrysler plans on notifying owners beginning in January.
