Pero más allá de la definición están las cifras, y este 2012 está resultando sorprendente para esta categoría. Hasta el mes de septiembre, los coches del segmento C hacia abajo han captado el 19,3% del mercado total automovilístico en EEUU. Esto supone un crecimiento del 50% respecto al ejercicio anterior. Dicen los analistas que la gente ha dejado de ver al coche pequeño como una solución cuándo no se pueden comprar otra cosa, para pasar a valorarlo por sus propias características. Sure, the pilots need to be able to keep an eye on the course and keep their vehicles pointed in the right direction. But that's not all. Drivers also need to be in constant contact with either a navigator, a spotter or a pit chief while simultaneously making sure their car doesn't go supernova on the course. Skoda recently put driver Andreas Mikkelsen's multitasking skills to the test by giving him a pop quiz while he was slinging his IRC rally car around the Millbrook race track. With questions covering topics ranging from rally history to import/export trivia, Mikkelson had his work cut out for him, but he handles the rapid-fire Q&A like a champ. One driver's tale Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Th!nk (Think) What would happen if you drove to National Plug In Day in your EV, stopped at a Walgreens afterwards to charge, then found out you couldn't unplug the J1772 coupler? Not a good way to end the day. According to one Think City owner, who posts by the user name "brkannd" on a Yahoo Group for fellow EV owners (called "think_ev"), he drove 65 miles to Philadelphia for the second annual Plug In Day and used the SemaCharge network to find this particular charging station. After being unable to disconnect, he asked for help in the store, but of course they knew nothing about the charger. He was given an 800-telephone number for SemaCharge, where he left a message with their answering service, and was told he wouldn't be called back until the next day. The SemaCharge website, on the other hand, proudly reads "Call us! We're here, 24/7/365!" We've asked SemaCharge for a comment, but have not received a response. He ended up calling his contact at EuroStar, where he'd originally purchased his Think, who handed his phone to a colleague named Lanny. Lanny had had experience with this type of problem before and his solution was to "man-handle it," putting extreme upward vertical pressure on the nozzle, breaking it free. Brkannd then jimmied with his charge coupler until the car was released. He did receive a callback from SemaCharge four hours later, and they said a technician would be sent out to look at it, adding that they are looking at making some changes to their nozzle in order to improve them. Lanny posted some photos on the Yahoo group showing the problem - that the latch didn't open as far as the connector on the adjacent station when compared side by side. He also wondered if there's a problem with inconsistency, such as the threshold on the J1772 receptacle in the Think being higher than other EVs, creating a bent connector latch. Reader Jim M., who sent in this tip, let us know that other Think City and BMW ActiveE owners have had problems in the Washington/Baltimore area disconnecting chargers as well. Chelsea Sexton, best known for her role in "Who Killed the Electric Car?", recently wrote a column for Wired expressing concerns over inconsistencies in charging station technologies. She said she thinks Tesla Motors' new Supercharger is admirable to an extent, but doesn't appreciate the proprietary functionality for Model S owners only. Sexton wants to see automakers come out of hiding and commit to building and marketing all kinds of EVs. Then, she says, the infrastructure will follow. When it does, we need it to be reliable, and stories like this one show that just having the chargers isn't enough. Houston Rockets' point guard Jeremy Lin and the Volvo XC60 can both be labeled smart, underrated and overlooked, which makes them a great pair for Volvo's latest ad campaign, "The Unexpected Ones." In the commercial spot, NBA star Lin is showed getting into a bright red XC60 R-Design while others wait to be chauffeured off in a sea of black limousines. Then instead of turning to drive through a crowd of fans and photographers, he makes an unexpected turn away from the crowd and toward the open road. Just like the ad, Lin's career has been filled with unexpected turns after he received no college scholarships and went undrafted out of Harvard in the NBA, but then became a household name almost overnight due to his initial success at the top of the key playing with the New York Knicks last year. Volvo and Lin signed a two-year deal as the automaker hopes that the ad resonates with younger buyers in addition to consumers in China and other emerging Asian markets. A jury of female auto writers from a total of 12 countries all voted on this year's winners over four categories, including Family Car, Luxury Car, Sports Car and Economy Car, though the panel also awards a trophy for "supreme winner." This year, the Evoque took first place in both Luxury Car and supreme winner segments. Interestingly enough, the BMW 3 Series drove off with first place in the Family Car category, while the Porsche 911 took the top Sports Car nod and the Honda Civic won Economy Car honors. WWCOTY says that while each category saw a clear winner, the spots for second and third place in each category switched multiple times as more votes came in. Nissan is installing its fast-charge points at strategic locations on Ecotricity's 'Electric Highway' motorway charging network. They're 50 kW DC fast-charge points that allow EVs to recharge to around 80 percent full in about 30 minutes, depending on the make and how full the battery is. "By introducing fast charging infrastructure at strategic motorway service stations, Nissan and Ecotricity are removing that worry and making EVs practical to a whole new selection of buyers," said Jim Wright, managing director of Nissan Motor (GB), in a statement, which is available below. So far, the EVSE units have been installed in designated parking bays at Welcome Break motorway services in South Mimms (M25/A1), Oxford (M40) and Hopwood Park (M42). In July, Ecotricity completed phase one of the Electric Highway, which joined the cities of London, Exeter and Manchester. The company expects phase two to be completed this year, bringing 'top up zones' to every Welcome Break motorway service in Great Britain. So far, the Ecotricity charging stations are free to access. Users just need to register for a free smartcard. | Posted: 08 Oct 2012 04:31 PM PDT  Official: Chrysler recalling 2009-2010 Ram 1500, Dodge Dakota pickups over axle pinion nut Filed under: Truck, Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Dodge, RamChrysler is issuing a recall for the 2009 and 2010 Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks due to improper installation of the rear axle pinion nut. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 44,300 trucks are affected by the recall, and there have been 12 confirmed incidents including one crash. The issue on both trucks is that the pinion nut is loosening on some trucks due to a lack of thread adhesive, and it is causing the rear axle to lock up resulting in loss of vehicle control. NHTSA's recall notice says that eight incidents occurred at speeds over 35 miles per hour and most also exhibited driveshaft failures as well since the loss of the pinion nut would cause the gear to separate from the driveshaft. In one complaint, the driveshaft separated from the rear axle and punctured the gas tank. Look no further than the last two laps at Talladega this past weekend as evidence. The final restart of the race saw Matt Kenseth at the head of the pack, but Tony Stewart managed to take the lead just before the white flag fell thanks to a push from Sam Hornish. But as the pack came out of Turn 3, Stewart dropped low to attempt to gain yet another push, snagging the rear of his car on the nose of Michael Waltrip's machine. The contact sent Stewart spinning into the pack, now four-wide behind him, and the resulting collision soaked up just about everyone on the field. Kenseth, meanwhile, escaped the fray and took the checkered flag for the win. This Dodge Dart R/T wears some interesting matte gray paint as well as a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero performance rubber. It's difficult to tell from this vantage, but the sedan may sit slightly lower than other models we've seen as well. Of course, it's difficult to miss the aggressive hood scoop planted front and center. Don't get too excited, though. Odds are this is not the much-rumored SRT-4, but rather a special one-off whipped up for the 2012 SEMA show next month. That hood, for example, comes straight from the Mopar catalog. Still, we wouldn't rule out Dodge offering a matte paint on the Dart option sheet. If Hyundai can make the coating viable on a large volume model like the Veloster, there's certainly nothing stopping Chrysler from doing the same. A new Finnish electric vehicle company called Scarlet has reached a deal with Helsinki's Metropolia University of Applied Science to collaborate on powertrain advancements for Scarlet's sports car. Scarlet was interested in Metropolia's work on the development of the 375-horsepower Electric RaceAbout (E-RA) prototype. To refresh everyone's memory, in March, the E-RA set a world speed record for an EV on ice (this is Finland, after all), going 161.59 miles per hour and hitting an average of 156.65 mph over two time trials. There's a video of those trials here. Scarlet didn't divulge further details about what the collaboration plans to accomplish, other than to say R&D work on "other parts of the Scarlet ecosystem" will be involved. A practice growing in popularity among the Japanese auto industry has not been well received by the country's automotive press. It seems that automakers' plans to debut new models in other markets, well in advance of a home market on-sale date, is rubbing local media members the wrong way. This sentiment is could very well be the motivation behind what went down at Nissan's Yokohama headquarters recently. The Japanese automotive press gathered at Nissan HQ for the home market unveiling of the Versa (a.k.a. Tiida, Sunny, Almera, Pulsar, depending on where you live). According to reports, the media met the automaker with jeers rather than the usual "oohs" and "aahs" that come with a vehicle unveiling. Members of the press took issue with what they viewed as a lack of basic features. One reporter noted the lack of a middle rear headrest, suggesting that any employees driving the Versa as a fleet car will view it as if Nissan's management does not value them. Apparently, the Versa costs 1,388,100 yen, which converts to $17,638 in undervalued dollars - well above the $10,990 starting price in the States. | Posted: 08 Oct 2012 12:47 PM PDT  ICON se llevará un Dodge PickUp del 65 para el SEMA Filed under: Dodge, SEMA Sólo quedan dos meses de 2012, pero todavía quedan unos cuantos espectáculos automovilísticos por vivir y contarte en Autoblog, como el Salón de Los Ángeles, o el SEMA Show, la fiesta de las preparaciones que cada año nos contagia por estas fechas con algunas auténticas obras de arte sobre ruedas. Entre ellas llevamos años quedándonos impresionados con los trabajos de nuestros amigos de ICON (¿recuerdas la prueba del ICON Bronco de hace unos días?). Pues bien, ICON volverá a estar en el SEMA este año, con una nueva novedad absoluta, en la forma de un Dodge Pick Up de 1965, retocado en su ya conocido procedimiento restomod (restaurar y modificar sin cambiar demasiado el aspecto). Lleva un seis en línea diésel Cummings bajo el capó delantero, y su futuro dueño ya lo ha pagado y reservado... Estará por ver si le seguirán secuelas. Por ahora lo conocemos como GLA y aunque no hay demasiados datos, ya ha sido cazando realizando algunas pruebas con un denso camuflaje que apenas nos deja observar cómo será. El nuevo GLA debería plantar cara a los Volkswagen Tiguan, Audi Q3 y BMW X1. Desarrollado sobre la nueva plataforma modular que ya han estrenado los Clase A y B, se podrá adquirir a finales del año que viene tanto con tracción total como con la más sencilla 2WD. Estéticamente es pronto para definir sus formas, pero promete continuar con la nueva imagen de marca, siendo más juvenil y dinámico que el GLK. La oferta de motores que llevará el nuevo GLA será compartida con los Clase A y B. Sin estar lógicamente definida por ahora, sí nos atrevemos a avanzar que podrá comprarse en versiones 200 CDI y 220 CDI con 136 y 170 CV respectivamente. Su fabricación tendrá lugar en la misma planta húngara de la que salen los Clase B. | Posted: 08 Oct 2012 12:47 PM PDT  Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover spotted Filed under: Spy Photos, Crossover, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury Back in July, Mercedes-Benz officially confirmed plans for an all-new compact crossover, and now we're finally getting our first look at the new model to be called the GLA-Class. Based on the same platform used for the new A-Class and B-Class models, the GLA-Class will go up against the BMW X1. From these spy shots, it looks like the GLA will get a sportier, more rounded shape that fits in better with the A-Class hatchback rather than other SUVs like the GL-Class and GLK-Class. Compared to the A-Class, which will likely be coming to the U.S. in 2013, the GLA-Class will be more accommodating to rear occupants with larger rear door openings. This test mule also reveals a panoramic sunroof that stretches all the way back to the C-pillar. The GLA-Class will be built alongside the A- and B-Class in Rastatt, Germany, and it is expected to go into production in 2014. In addition to the A-Class, B-Class and GLA-Class, this platform will also underpin the CLA-Class four-door coupe and SLA-Class roadster.
