How does the Tesla Model S Performance stack up against the BMW M5 on a drag strip? And, of course, who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong? While we can't speak to the either the political or metaphysical queries, we now have one answer to the automotive one. On paper, the answer seems clear. The BMW M5 is said to scoot from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds when equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, while Tesla says the Model S Signature Performance edition can do that in 4.4 seconds. What happens beyond that speed is anyone's guess, but it should be kept in mind that the gas guzzler's 4.4-liter V8 puts out 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque - maybe more - compared to the battery-operated sedan's 416 hp and 443 lb-ft of sizzle. But driving doesn't happen on paper and so the similarly-inquisitive folks at Automobile magazine took one of each of these vehicles to Gingerman Raceway for a little head-to-head competition. The result? While it is possible for the somewhat lighter German machine to occasionally edge out the slippery American newcomer, the Tesla seems more adept at translating its potential energy into forward motion. Taking its print advertising campaign one step further, Lexus has employed CinePrint to bring some life to an otherwise static magazine spot for its new 2013 ES sedan in the October 15 issue of Sports Illustrated. Here's how it works: Download the iPad edition of SI, place the iPad under the actual magazine page displaying the ad, dim the lights and watch it all unfold. The once-lifeless ES ad now dances on the page using technology that, as Lexus says, creates "a tactile and visceral connection that brings one closer to the printed page with a multi-sensory experience that combines sight, sound and touch." In other words, it looks really rad. While the rest of the world was still focused on producing sports cars with flowing, organic body lines, Lamborghini pulled back the sheets on fiendishly-low Countach with it's razor-sharp panel creases and plethora of vents and ducts. Very simply, there had never been anything like this car on the road before. Maybe that's why it holds onto our imaginations so rabidly. It's more than having owned the poster. It's knowing that in spite of all the machine's flaws, the Countach is something special. James Chen, the owner of Axis Wheels, knows that fact all too well. As a life-long fan of the Countach, he finally realized a childhood dream when he bought the machine you see above. Like this or this or this. But take a look at Colorado Republican congressional candidate Joe Coors' campaign commercial, which was actually filmed inside his Chevrolet Volt and is full of praise for the car. "I bet you don't know many Republicans who drive hybrid cars," he says in the ad. The Volt's a plug-in hybrid, but we get the idea. Coors also says he's always been a "car nut," and 30 years ago tried to build an electric car in his garage. He's into alternative energy, domestic oil and natural gas production and lowering energy costs while reducing dependence on foreign oil. Click below to watch the video.Denver Post columnist Lynn Bartels says she's been asked several times since the ad came out what Coors actually drives. Yes, he drives a 2012 Volt, she says, even though he could be driving a luxury car worth much more, what with his $2 million a year from family trusts and all. Local residents think Coors bought the car to look good on energy issues, but he does seem to love the car. Not too long ago, host Bradley Hasemeyer tried his hand at a water-powered jet pack, and while cool, the machine's ridiculous price tag seems a bit out of the realm of reality for common folk. Now Translogic has turned its attention to the FlyBoard; a water-powered contraption that uses a snowboard-like base and two hand-held nozzles. The whole contraption lands at just under $7,000 and can be operated using any jet ski. That's still pricey, but more in line with what well-to-do folk looking for a toy can shell out - plus we can now see a business case for waterfront entrepreneurs to offer pay-per-ride attractions, meaning you're probably much closer than ever before to trying out a jet pack for yourself. Hasemeyer seems to get the hang of operating the contraption easily enough, though his short stint at the controls doesn't lend him the expertise to pull off any stunts. Still, this looks like the easiest and least-expensive way to fulfill your Iron Man fantasies here in the real world. Allí, el CEO del grupo, Philippe Varin, declaró a los periodistas presentes que "la reestructuración de PSA es un asunto interno", en una alusión a las declaraciones del ministro francés y dando a entender que el gobierno francés no debía interferir. Anteriormente, Arnaud Montebourg declaró que "arrancaría" concesiones a Peugeot para no despedir a 8.000 personas y cerrar Aulnay. Para el gobierno francés, el plan es inaceptable y ha convocado una reunión con la empresa y los sindicatos para el 25 de octubre. En esa reunión, Varin explicó que presentaría un informe independiente sobre su situación financiera. Por otra parte, Philippe Varin y Carlos Ghosn, CEO de Renault, instaron al gobierno de François Hollande para bajar los costes salariales para volver a ser competitivos y mantener abiertas las fábricas. Aún así, hay signos de que el gobierno podría bajar la parte empresarial de las cotizaciones sociales, pues Montebourg explicó que se podría reducir la carga patronal si la empresa reinvierte en la producción la parte que no pagó al Estado. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has responded to a request from Governor Jerry Brown to allow slightly dirtier gasoline to be sold about three weeks before the state usually switches to the so-called "winter blend" of gas. Brown made the request to bring the gas cost down from record highs. The most populous US state, which uses gas that's better for the environment in the summer because it evaporates more slowly, usually switches to faster evaporating fuel - the winder blend - on October 31. The cleaner gas is required in the summer because of harsher ozone conditions. Brown made the request after prices topped $4.65 a gallon, on average, this past weekend, about 84 cents per gallon more than the national rate. In some places, a gallon was much, much higher: $5.89 around Big Sur. CARB's Dave Cleggern told Capitol Public radio that the early switch shouldn't pose a problem this year. "I don't think there is going to be too dramatic an impact on air quality because the temperatures have begun to cool in the nick of time you might say and the cooler temperatures that we're seeing now should help blunt any air quality impact," he said. California is the only state that uses the exact formulation of gasoline that it does, and the fuel requires special refining. Due in part to a power outage at ExxonMobil's plant in Torrance, CA and some pipeline issues, gas prices spiked recently. The governor's hope is that once the winter blend is added to the state's fuel supply, prices will fall. It's no secret that Leno has a soft spot for Ford products. He owns a boat load of high-performance Blue Oval machines, including a Ford GT and a wicked Shogun. So, what does he think of the new Boss? Leno seems impressed with the machine, especially when it comes to the balance of horsepower and overall performance, calling the Boss 302 Laguna Seca the most sports car of all the Mustang variants. Leno even goes so far as to say he'd rather have this machine over the 662-horsepower Shelby GT500. Having driven both, we're inclined to agree with the comic. En el caso de Cosworth, el preparador inglés presentará este Hyundai Genesis, humildemente calificado por la marca como "definitivo" en prestaciones. Si bien es cierto que de su V6 de inyección directa Cosworth extrae unas cifras muy respetables con una potencia máxima de 389 CV y un par máximo de 440 Nm, no es el deportivo definitivo. Pero no cabe duda de que será el Hyundai definitivo. Bautizado Cosworth Genesis Racing Series Coupe, a pesar de que Hyundai se retire de la competición en Estados Unidos, el coupé viene completo con toda una serie de modificaciones, como los frenos de alto rendimiento, un kit carrocería, escapes y admisión optimizados, etc. De momento, sólo os podemos mostrar el diseño realizado por el famoso Jon Sibal, pero estaremos en el SEMA para enseñaroslo en vivo. | Posted: 09 Oct 2012 01:10 PM PDT  Report: Tear gas fired at PSA job protesters outside of Paris Motor Show Filed under: Europe, Government/Legal, Paris Motor Show, UAW/UnionsPolice in Paris fired tear gas at demonstrators outside of the Paris Motor Show today. Around 1,000 protesters showed up in an attempt to break through police lines and gain access to the show in a demonstration against further austerity measures. The group included workers from a PSA Peugeot Citroën plant that's scheduled for closure, and some demonstrators threw eggs and flour at police. The group also reportedly included workers from other manufacturers that have announced job cuts. The standoff is part of nationwide demonstrations as France continues to struggle with an unemployment rate parked at over 10 percent. Lawmakers in the country are currently deciding on whether or not to back a European Union agreement that will see France agree to balance its finances in an attempt to slow the continent's debt crisis. Such austerity measures are unpopular in France, and were the leading issue driving former President Nicolas Sarkozy from office. Socialist President Francois Hollande earned the office after campaigning on a platform that promised to tackle the French deficit without stifling growth or imposing austerity measures. The Ferrari with the most power ever, which will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next January, will indeed be a hybrid, Automotive News reports, citing people it declined to identify. The new model, which will replace the limited-edition Enzo, will pair a V12 with an electric motor that combined will deliver an ungodly 900 horsepower. Ferrari has already said it's working on a carbon fiber chassis that will cut weight by 20 percent relative to the one used for the Enzo, which means the hybrid components will simply bring the new hybrid to the same weight as the Enzo. The automaker said at the Paris Motor Show last month that it would launch its first hybrid "in the near future," though didn't divulge details such as the timeframe or model name. Some reports have said the car will be called the F70. We'll just call it a beast, for now. El siguiente paso es volver al círculo virtuoso de aligerar el coche. Si pesa menos, gasta menos y sus prestaciones mejoran al mismo tiempo. Es una tarea complicada, pues el cliente no está dispuesto a renunciar al equipamiento de confort al que se ha acostumbrado y aún menos al equipamiento de seguridad (faltaría más). De ahí el interés creciente por los materiales compuestos.Ford está actualmente trabajando en un nuevo capó de fibra de carbono cuya fabricación sería lo suficientemente rápida y barata para ser utilizada en las líneas de montaje de un coche gran difusión, como el Focus. Recordemos que hasta el proceso de fabricación de un panel de carrocería en fibra de carbono es muy laborioso y costoso, pero sus ventajas son indudables. Last year, the company made an ad featuring Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood. The spot achieved viral status quickly when pundits charged that Eastwood's lines were politically motivated; meant to appeal to progressive voters/viewers favoring a second term for President Obama. In 2011, agency Wieden & Kennedy burst into the game with a now famous commercial featuring Eminem. Both ads have supported Chrysler's "Imported from Detroit" marketing platform. Francois briefed reporters Monday at the Detroit Opera House while he also debuted a new series of ads for the Ram brand. The new spots for the updated Ram 1500 have a theme of "Heaven and Earth," and speak to the lengths to which Ram will go to win over new buyers (read: Ford and Chevrolet truck owners). The brand, spun off from Dodge three years ago to its own franchise, continues using the deep, manly, seemingly tobacco-choked voice of actor Sam Elliott, who also appears in the ads. We are going to see a lot of this campaign during the Major League Baseball playoffs and World Series. "With this truck launch we literally swing for the fences," said Fred Diaz, the head of the Ram division as well as president of Chrysler's Mexican operations. Get it? Ram has been succeeding by focusing its messaging around the iconic Elliott, as well as making serious upgrades to the 2013 Ram 1500. Ram has also been spending resources targeting the Hispanic audience, whose pickup buying has been on the rise. Ram has seen its share of the light-duty pickup market surge 1.7 points to 17 percent among Hispanics in test markets. Ram has seen its overall share of the light and heavy pickup segment rise from 14.6 percent to 18.4 percent for the first nine months of 2012. Chrysler did more to the mid-cycle refresh for the Ram than is usually done on a vehicle. But under Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler has made increasing share for the Ram a priority. "What started out as a minor freshening," said Diaz, "turned into a major overhaul." The 2013 Ram, which was already the pickup with the best road manners, got a new air suspension, and a new powertrain lineup including a V6 mated to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that returns a segment-best 25 miles per gallon on the highway; giving Ram bragging rights on fuel economy. While reservations can be made for a new Model S or Roadster at the retail store, Tesla says other versions of the store merely direct potential customers to make their reservation online. Most of these boutique-style stores are in shopping malls, and Tesla asserts that they are not sales facilities. It's an assertion with which traditional auto dealers are taking issue. Dealers associations and networks across the country are doubling down their efforts to make Tesla's OEM showroom network illegal. Tesla has opened 17 stores in 10 states, as well as the District of Columbia. Dealership associations contend Tesla's notion that sales are not made at these stores, stating that the showroom experience is still part of the sales process. To that end, dealer groups across the country have embarked in legal battles with the electric carmaker. The Illinois Secretary of State has informed Tesla that it is illegal to list CEO Elon Musk as the owner of its Chicago store. The Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association is looking into legal options against Telsa's Westchester store, as well as two others in New York. In Massachusetts, the opening of a store in the suburban Natick Mall is having its legality challenged by the dealer association in that state. California has laws in place that allow for a manufacturer to run its own dealership, as long as it is not within 10 miles of an existing dealer. That practice caught the ire of Chrysler dealers when the American automaker opened its own multi-brand showroom near downtown Los Angeles. Tesla says the way that its stores are run are unique to each location. According to George Blankenship, Tesla's VP of sales, "If we can't be a dealer in a mall, we won't do reservations on-site. We tell people where to go on our website to make a reservation." Blankenship is the former Apple retail guru and the mind behind the Apple Stores - an experience Tesla hopes to recreate in its own sales network. In the eyes of many dealers, that is a threat to their own dealership model.
