La muestra estadounidense es la elegida por Volkswagen para darnos a conocer su nuevo Beetle descapotable. Pero la compañía de Wolfsburgo nos ha adelantado hoy las primeras imágenes de su compacto retro-chic, en un atractivo color rojo. Obviamente, las diferencias respecto a la variante cerrada se reducen a que el techo metálico ha sido sustituido por uno de lona. | Posted: 04 Oct 2012 12:21 AM PDT  Dos semanas extra de parada para la fábrica del Fiat Panda Filed under: Fiat, Utilitarios Te contábamos esta misma semana la parada "técnica" obligada en la planta eslovaca de PSA ante la caída sin fin del mercado europeo. Hoy te comentamos que Fiat ha decidido tomar una medida similar, nuevamente, en su planta de Pomigliano, cerca de Nápoles, donde se fabrica el nuevo Panda. Los italianos, que ya llevan acumuladas varias semanas de parada para ajustar la producción a la demanda, tendrán dos semanas más la fábrica detenida, en un intento por no acumular stock innecesario. Se espera que a finales de este mes Marchionne nos explique los resultados de Fiat en el tercer trimestre, y aclare la situación futura de Fiat en Europa. En todo caso, como ya te contamos aquí, no hay planificado ningún cierre o despido de empleados a corto plazo, y la baja demanda será combatida con paradas productivas. Jerry Seinfeld acts almost as an ambassador to the comedy world, bringing us along to spend a few hours with the likes of funnymen that include Larry David, Ricky Gervais, and Alec Baldwin. With cars like a vintage Volkswagen Beetle, Mercedes-Benz 280 SL and Austin Healy 3000, the mode of transport to said coffee is always old and always awesome. The season finale of CiCGC proves to be the most interesting episode yet, as Jerry is joined by his Seinfeld co-star of nine years, Michael Richards, a.k.a. Kramer. The two set off for java in a 1962 Volkswagen Double Cab, and everything seems normal. Kra - pardon us, Richards shows Jerry sites such as the partially crumbling Getty Villa, and then things take a turn for the strange. A graphic pops up early on in the clip, informing us that "Certain scenes from this episode seem like they were set up. They were not." That is in reference to a pair of occurrences in the short that were both absurd and serendipitous. We won't spoil it for you. Also making this video worth watching is the fact that these two professionals who shared a workplace for nearly a decade spent time pondering over the methods they used when they were at their peak. Additionally, Richards offers up an explanation for the incident at the Laugh Factory that appeared both genuine and eloquent. At first glance, the improvements seem incremental. But, go beyond the seductive aesthetics and look at the specs, you'll realize they are anything but. The number 46 BRE Datsun 510 is perhaps the poster child for racing underdogs. When it first hit the SCCA Trans Am scene in the early '70s, it lined up against several storied marques. It took lots of wrench time and plenty of determination, but the BRE team pushed to two national championship wins against rival Alfa Romeo in 1971 and 1972. Race cars have evolved at about the same clip as telephones in the last 30 years, but there's still something special about watching this machine tackle a race course.Road & Track recently turned to Indycar driver Alex Lloyd to get his interpretation of what makes this particular car so important. The data comes courtesy of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has not ventured a hypothesis on the factors behind the increase. Automotive News indicates other safety groups believe the jump could be attributable to culprits as wide ranging as the weather, the economy and fuel prices. A spike in the popularity of synthetic drugs and texting while driving could also be to blame. The drophead makes use of the same flattened roof line of the 2012 Beetle Coupe when the folding soft top is in place. Stow the roof, and the mechanism lays flat to increase rear visibility. Volkswagen says the roof can go from fully stowed to in place in just 10 seconds, and engineers built in an automatic rollover support system comprised of two computer-actuated bars behind the rear seat that pop up in just four milliseconds in the event of a collision. Buyers can choose between three engine options, including a 2.5-liter five-cylinder good for 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder is also available with 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque and can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Finally, diesel buyers will be happy to hear Volkswagen will offer the 2013 Beetle Convertible with a familiar 2.0 turbo-diesel four-cylinder good for 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Pop star Ce eLo Green joins the A-list of Fisker Karma owners. "We would like to welcome @CeeLoGreen to our family of #FiskerKarma owners," the Atlanta dealership posted to Twitter, showing off the "Lady Killer" singer just chilling with his new car. Green, best known for singing on Gnarls Barkley's mega-hit "Crazy" and showing up for awards shows in unpredictable outfits, joins the A-list of stars who've become Fisker Karma owners (with Justin Bieber and Leonardo DiCaprio receiving the most recognition). More recently, Green has been coaching, and performing, on the hit NBC series, "The Voice." Fisker Automotive has been skilled at getting celebrities behind the wheel - and the paparazzi have been chasing after them. This kind of attention could reduce marketing costs during a time when funds are needed to build the next car in the pipeline and deal with recalls of the current model. It's tougher to find that kind of public celebrity list for the Tesla Model S or Roadster, the BMW i3 or for EVs in the $30-to-low-$40,000 range. Certainly, George Clooney was an early adopter of the Roadster and Jay Leno is known for driving his Chevy Volt, but their names don't seem to stick to those cars as closely as Bieber's and DiCaprio's do to Fisker. The Florence-based sportscar manufacturer plans to launch a new creation, possibly called Seiottosei or 686, by the end of next year. The rear-engine, rear-wheel drive sportster will feature a space frame construction wherein the engine and the sequential transmission serve as structural members. The company isn't saying what sort of powerplant the car will use, though the questionably translated press release seems to indicate Ermini will eschew large displacement options for something lighter and more sprightly. Even so, the company plans to give its creation a power-to-weight ratio on par with most supercars. The carbon fiber body panels for the "Barchetta Sport" model were penned by Giulio Cappellini, a designer from outside of the automotive sphere, and Ermini promises the finished product will be easy to maintain, offer low emissions and responsible fuel consumption. Filed under: BMW, Fotos espía En un famoso foro de BMW norteamericano, BimmerPost, han aparecido unos diseños que mostrarían una posible variante Gran Coupé del próximo Serie 2. El Serie 2 será la versión Coupé del actual Serie 1 y al igual que ocurre con el Serie 6, existirá en cupé tradicional (2 puertas) y, según la gente de BimmerPost, en Gran Coupé (4 puertas). Mientras algunos hablan ya de un M2, no se sabe de donde salieron estos diseños, ni si realmente son ciertos. Al parecer son imágenes que se "colaron" en una presentación en el salón de París, pero nadie las vio. El único atisbo de credibilidad es que parece ser una filtración de la gente de parismotorshow-blog.com, un blog montado por BMW expresamente para las novedades del salón de París. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let's bring you up to speed: Andy House, who owns an exotic car repair shop called Performance Auto Sales, crashed his Veyron into a lagoon in Texas after allegedly being distracted by a low-flying pelican... or something. Naturally, House turned a claim into his insurance company for the totaled supercar to the tune of $2.2 million, which is likely more than the car is actually worth. Shortly thereafter, video surfaced of the crash, with nary a distraction in sight. The next makes-you-go-hmm moment occured when reports surfaced of a new Veyron, along with a pair of Lamborghini coupes and a Porsche 911 GT3, landing in House's garage. The estimated cost of these supercars, according to Jalopnik, is $2.2 million. All of this made Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Company's insurance fraud lawsuit in 2011 - two years after the incident - come as little surprise. So, the latest: For some completely unknown reason, the lawsuit between House and his insurance company has been delayed. Jalopnik reports that nobody, including the office of the Galveston Court Clerks, has been able to explain why the trial did not start as planned. En el Royal Bank Plaza expuso un modelo de su gama, como se hace en los aeropuertos y en algunos hoteles de lujo, junto a un circuito de slot creado a medida. La pista, los edificios y los propios Audi A4 fueron fabricados expresamente para esta promoción por Slot Mods USA (los que escondieron un circuito completo con su decorado en un Porsche 917K a escala 1, seguro que os suena). Se escaneó con un láser industrial un Audi A4 y se enviaron los datos a un empresa especializada en "impresión 3D", como se suele llamar. Como se trata de promocionar, también, la tracción integral Quattro, se hicieron con un chasis, motor y tracción integral de un modelo de slot que se encuentra en el comercio y para más seguridad añadieron unos imanes. Por último, cada coche lleva una cámara a bordo que envía en vivo las imágenes a un iPad, el cual sirve de control para el coche gracias a una app desarrollada expresamente. And it's easy to understand why - as fuel mileage requirements are increasing, engine sizes are decreasing. To continue offering the power levels to which modern automotive buyers have come to expect, forced induction offers a ready solution. Just how many turbochargers are we talking? Last year, Honeywell claims that turbocharged passenger vehicles accounted for 25 percent of the global market, for a total of 20 million vehicles. By 2017, says the report, that number will swell to 36 million new vehicles, which would be about 40 percent of global sales. About as strange as an Associated Press writer quoting a guy named Reuter.Nissan, which at one time was charging customers $349 a month to lease the all-electric Leaf, has recently dropped that rate to as low as $219 a month, according to the AP. Customers can get that rate if they agree to a 32-month lease with $2,999 down. In June, Nissan dropped its monthly lease rate to $289 a month for a 39-month lease; it subsequently decreased the rate to $249 a month. The latest price cut comes after slow demand for the first mass-produced EV sold in the U.S. 2012 Nissan Leaf sales in the U.S., through September, at 5,212 units, were down 28 percent from a year earlier, even though September's sales were the best in 12 months. Nissan spokesman David Reuter told the AP that Leaf sales had been hampered by expanding distribution to all 50 states and away from areas like California, where the most Leafs are sold. Reuter also estimated that about 70 percent of Leafs are purchases outright, while 30 percent of the cars are leased. Algunos son puros objetos de diseño (muchas veces no son más que una maqueta a escala 1) que nunca se fabricarán en serie, otros prefiguran las grandes líneas de un futuro modelo, y otros no son más que el modelo definitivo apenas disfrazado de concept car, como por ejemplo el VW Golf VII GTI del pasado salón de París. Uno de los concept cars apenas disfrazado que allí se pudieron ver es el Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo. A priori, el concept nos enseña sólo lo que será el restyling del Panamera, especialmente en la zaga con unos pilotos más finos que recuerdan a los del actual 911 tipo 991. Según Bernahrd Maier, miembro del consejo de dirección de marketing, cuando Porsche enseña un concept car, ya está decidido que se fabricará en serie, aunque sea limitada. | Posted: 03 Oct 2012 12:18 PM PDT  Quick Spin: 2013 Ford Explorer Sport Filed under: Performance, SUV, Crossover, Ford, Quick SpinsFord has had nothing but great success with its latest, three-row iteration of the Explorer SUV, with buyers finding it a suitably good driving tool for the jobs demanded by family living. And while I've never found the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 that inhabits the engine bay to be anything less than well-suited to this large SUV/CUV class - it wasn't so very long ago that a 290-horsepower, 24-mile-per-gallon-highway six-cylinder would have seemed like a real tough guy - it has never been a particularly exciting powerplant, either. Enter the 2013 Explorer Sport, with an EcoBoost twin-turbocharged version of that 3.5-liter six, and 365 horsepower with 350 pound-feet of torque to show for it. I should add that the extra shove only comes at the expense of one highway mpg and one city mpg, relative to the four-wheel-drive iteration of the non-turbo Explorer, which is nice, too. Ford was kind enough to invite me to take a taste of this hotted-up Explorer recently; an experience that I found generally pleasant, if not entirely satisfying.Driving Notes We eat with the eyes first. If your particular set of peepers isn't enamored by piano black accents, then you may not get close enough to even test drive the new Sport, as this model is slathered with shiny black highlights. The big black grille dominates the Explorer, and I think does a good job of making the large vehicle look a bit more compact - lower and meaner. The matching black on the 21-inch wheels, body cladding, roof rails and mirror caps, along with smoked covers for the front and rear lighting, seems like overkill to me. To many it'll just make the Explorer look cooler than ever. Some of us like Original Recipe, some like Extra Crispy. There's no question in my mind that the Sport version of the Explorer feels fleet-of-foot for a vehicle of this size and weight. Ford was coy about official 0-60 times for the model, saying only that it had found it to be "two seconds faster" than the 3.5-liter non-turbo model. Floored from a standstill, the EcoBoost six will hesitate to deliver full thrust for a heartbeat or two, then offer a fairly strong torque pop once the engine is spinning at about 2000 rpm. Middle revs are where this engine eats, however, and I found passing maneuvers on the highway to be easy to execute briskly in the 70-90 mph zone. A decent little exhaust growl is in evidence at high rpm, too. So the Explorer Sport is fairly quick on its feet and looks mean (at least to some), but it doesn't actually go so far as to acquit itself as a full-on performance model, à la a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, or BMW X5 M, for instance. That's not just because the Ford isn't as quick, but also because the chassis and suspension tuning is still balanced more toward highway comfort than aimed at outright handling performance. The Sport is stiffer laterally than the standard SUV, where an added tower brace makes itself felt, but there is still a fairly high amount of vertical movement through the suspension when the Gs pile on. The retuned electric power steering is quicker to turn in (again, that stiffer front section helps here), and accurate when holding a fast line, but it's absolutely lifeless in terms of feel and feedback from the road. The Sport is equipped with paddle shifters to modulate the six-speed automatic, but response time is slow and the physical feel of the paddles is pretty unsatisfying. All-in, the Explorer Sport is kind of a performance middle child; more like a motored-up version of the original than a full sporting variant. I have mixed feelings about that last bullet, in terms of my own conclusion about the Sport. On one hand, starting at $40,720 (including destination and delivery), the Sport is only about $2,600 more than the high-content Limited trim, with a much more powerful engine, similar EPA fuel economy and many of the same standard options. (The Sport comes standard with 4WD, leather, MyFord Touch, SYNC, etc.) On the other hand, the Sport doesn't use its extra go-juice to push many of my "enthusiast driver" buttons, I get no extra towing capacity from the increased power and torque (5,000-pound max), and once the options sheet starts coming into play, a $50,000-Explorer can be a reality. The MSRP for our tester was a heady $48,385. I think Ford is counting on just enough incremental sales from the Sport to make the variant worthwhile in a model that is just killing the rest of its segment. Plenty of former Mustang-owning Dads should be willing to pony up a slightly bigger lease payment for the payoff of winning a stoplight grand prixs here and there.
