Posted: 03 Oct 2012 01:09 AM PDT ![]() Grecia aprueba una subvención de 28,9 millones de euros para un circuito de F1 Filed under: CompeticiónVista de la ciudad de Patras, donde se situará el circuito Puede que haya crisis salvaje en Grecia, con un paro que ronda el 25% (algo que a los españoles no nos debe sonar demasiado extraño), pero el mundo no se para, y una de las claves para que los griegos salgan del agujero pasa por hacer dinero en aquellos sectores que mejor se les dan, como el turismo (nuevamente, a los españoles esto tampoco nos sonará raro). Uno de los proyectos ambiciosos que había en Grecia antes de la explosión de la crisis pasaba por la construcción de un complejo de circuitos, capacitados para acoger carreras internacionales como la F1. El monto total del proyecto asciende a 94,6 millones de euros, la mayor parte de ellos aportados por una entidad privada: Racetrack Patras SA. El circuito se localizará en la propia ciudad portuaria de Patras. Pues bien, ayer se supo que el Gobierno Griego, a través de su ministerio de fomento, ha aprobado una subvención de 28,9 millones para la construcción de las instalaciones, algo que debería servir para generar puestos de trabajo directos durante la construcción de las mismas, y generar luego negocios a través de las carreras que se puedan acoger. ¿Estará Ecclestone dispuesto a montar un GP de Grecia en un futuro próximo? Como puedes observar en la imagen del coche, todavía desprovisto de carrocería, hay unos enormes pulmones de admisión y un sistema KERS sobre la caja de cambios, con cableado en naranja (obligado por la ley dado el voltaje del sistema). Cuatro colas de escape agrupadas dos a dos en los laterales de la trasera del coche completan lo poco que podemos ver dentro de este apretadísimo vano. Se espera que sobre el mes de enero tengamos las primeras fotos oficiales del proyecto FX70, del que ya vimos en París el chasis, antes de su presentación pública a gran escala en Ginebra 2013. It seems we're in good company on that front. Dick Eytchison shares our belief that, "you just don't appreciate them unless you get out there and drive them." Over the years, Dick has whipped his 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle sedan into an autocross terror. With a breathed-on 383 crate V8 spitting out around 400 horsepower, the Chevelle has no deficit of grunt. Of course, getting a mid-sixties muscle bruiser to sprint in a straight line has never been an issue; it's getting the machine to go right and left that's the challenge. The 68-year-old weekend racer ditched the factory rear end for a stout Ford nine-inch with a Truetrac limited slip, and a set of Baer brakes on all four corners bring the machine down from speed. Up front, 13-inch rotors get pressed by four-piston calipers, while the back axle makes due with a couple 12-inch discs. A full suite of Hotchkis goodies, including A-arms, sway bars and spindles, help keep the machine planted, as do Bilstein shocks on all four corners. The finished product looks right at home dodging cones. We dig it. The most surprising thing is that Leo was in part responsible for Fisker getting started in the first place. TopGear started out by digging into Leo's early car experiences. His first car was a Sixties Ford Mustang fitted with the classic Windsor 351 (5.8-litre) engine that could smoke anyone on the road. The problem was it didn't have power steering and an engine that would just shut off. After being invited to the White House in the late 1990s by then-vice president Al Gore, who gave him an environmental 101 talk, DiCaprio embraced environmental issues. It was a defining moment, and it inspired him and his family to start the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, which "supports efforts to secure a sustainable future for our planet and all of its inhabitants." His green credentials were recognized by the broader public until years later, when he showed up driving his Toyota Prius to the Academy Awards. "I'm photographed constantly by paparazzi when I leave my home so it was just a responsible thing to do as an environmentalist," DiCaprio said. Here's the twist. Fisker Automotive co-founder Henrik Fisker says that it was that moment - watching Leo and the Prius at the Oscars - that inspired him to start up his company. "I saw you getting out of the Prius, and I thought there's got to be a market for an environmentally friendly car which goes beyond the Prius. That was my first inspiration," Fisker said. DiCaprio's reasons for liking the Fisker plug-in hybrid might resonate with a few average American car shoppers and movie goers out there. "I started trying hybrids, which were fantastic. But you can say that there are lots of vehicles out there that get equal or better mileage. Then I bought two electric vehicles, which I found I never wanted to drive. I was afraid of being stranded on the Pacific Coast Highway and standing at a restaurant for six hours while my vehicle's plugged in." He also liked the look and feel of the Fisker Karma sports car. He hopes to make a financial return on investment and to raise awareness of his Foundation. The dealer's sales staff accidentally sold the SUV to Danny Sawyer for $5,600 less than they should have, and when Sawyer refused to sign a new, more expensive contract for the correct amount, the dealership called the local police alleging the buyer had stolen the vehicle. Law enforcement then picked Sawyer up and held him for four hours before getting the situation straight. Dennis Ellmer, president of Priority Chevrolet, says he owes Sawyer an apology on behalf of the dealership, and had intended to do right by the buyer by letting him have the vehicle at the agreed-upon price. But Sawyer's lawyer says it's a little too late for saying, 'sorry.' The briefly-incarcerated owner has filed two lawsuits against the dealer, accusing the business of malicious prosecution, slander, defamation and abuse of process. All told, the suits seek a total of $2.2 million in damages, plus attorney fees. That $5,600 seems awfully cheap now. The lawsuit says Sawyer originally purchased a blue Traverse on May 7, but took the SUV back the next day for a black one. The dealer's sales manager made the swap, allegedly without saying anything about a price differential between the two. Either way, Sawyer signed a final contract for around $34,000 when the vehicle he took home had an actual price of closer to $39,000. According to TheCarConnection.com, Jaguar Land Rover North America CEO Andy Goss confirmed the next Defender will be a global product, and that it will be specifically engineered to meet U.S. crash safety and emissions standards. The news came during the 2012 Paris Motor Show, where JLR officials also made it clear the brand intends to bolster its Land Rover offerings in the North American market. As of right now, the vast majority of Land Rover Sales in the States can be attributed to the high-end Range Rover line. That mix may change somewhat as Land Rover refreshes some models and replaces others. Expect to see both the LR4 and the Defender receive serious overhauls in the near future. Even so, it will be some time before he next-generation Defender bows, and whether or not it looks anything like the DC100 concept above remains to be seen. From what we've heard, the new bruiser won't bow until 2017 at the earliest. For $32,995, the range-topping 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium can be equipped with either the sporty 2.0-liter EcoBoost and all-wheel drive or hybrid power and front-wheel drive. At launch, the 2013 Fusion Hybrid will only be available in mid-grade SE trim, but starting early next year, Ford will add a Titanium model that includes sportier exterior styling and a more premium cabin. This trim level will come standard with tech features like a 12-speaker Sony audio system, MyFord Touch, parking sensors and luxury items like power front seats, leather seats and 18-inch polished alloys. It isn't clear if the Fusion Hybrid Titanium's starting price includes the $795 destination charge, but when optioning up a Fusion Hybrid SE with similar equipment, it's right in the same neighborhood at $33,370. For those keeping track, the fully loaded Fusion Hybrid Titanium is just a step under the $35,925 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, with which it shares its chassis. His coupling of a gearbox directly with a universal joint transmission replaced the far less efficient belts and chains in use at the time, and became an industry standard. From there it was strength to strength to strength, the French firm going large-scale industrial in the early 20th century, to making "everything with a motor" in the post-war period, and by 1955, it was working to export every other car it made. Posted: 02 Oct 2012 02:04 PM PDT ![]() Report: Toyota planning 2.0T, more CVTs among other powertrain developments Filed under: Technology, Toyota Aside from its hybrid technology, Toyota has fallen behind the competition in terms of vehicle powertrains which could leave popular cars like the Toyota Camry and Toyota RAV4 lagging behind the competition. While most of its rivals have started using gasoline direct injection, turbochargers and some have moved to Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) to balance performance and fuel economy, many Toyota models are still using underpowered engines and outdated transmission technology. According to a report in Autoweek, Toyota is finally going to start dabbling in all of these technologies over the next couple years. In the States, Toyota only currently uses direct injection on the Scion FR-S, Lexus GS and Lexus LS, but AW says it will be introducing two new GDI engines over the next two years: a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine for its hybrids next year and a sportier 2.0-liter turbocharged mill a year later. It sounds like Toyota is also looking to convert its AR family engines to direct injection as early as next year for use in cars like the Venza and Lexus RX, but it won't be used on the Prius due to higher cost that would likely only return an "incremental benefit." The 2.0-liter turbo engine would be a derivative of the 2.5-liter AR engine, but there is no word as to what models this would go into. Those analog gauges of the all-electric Audi R8 e-tron that we saw earlier this year in a video of a run around Nürburgring's track are being replaced by an all-digital set-up similar to that of the Tesla Model S, Plug In Cars reports. As can be seen in a two-minute video below, the R8 e-tron, which is being shown off at the Paris Motor Show, will have a digital "powermeter" that takes the place of the tachometer (as there are no engine speed measurements needed here). The car's all-digital center console screen controls things like the radio and climate-control system. There's even a screen where the rear-view mirror usually is. Audi is planning to start selling the car, which will have a single-charge range of about 135 miles, later this year. They have swapped positions on the podium each time, but each is a medalist again this month in the industry-wide sales race. Toyota sales were up 42.33 percent in September compared to the same month last year, though that increase is lower than the prior month's gain of 47.5 percent. Likewise, Volkswagen was up 34.41 last month - far from the 62.54 gain it enjoyed in August. Honda's increase also dropped sharply month-over-month, from 57.88 percent in August to 29.33 percent last month. This could signal a return to normalcy for Japan's two biggest automakers, whose sales have appeared inflated compared with last year's numbers that were affected by that country's natural disasters and resulting production problems. Our own domestic automakers are likewise seeing a return normalcy that doesn't include them posting double-digit sales gain every month. Well, except for Chrysler, whose portfolio of brands did exit September with a gain of 11.55 percent. General Motors, however, barely remained positive with a small 1.5-percent increase and Ford dipped slightly into the red with a decrease of 0.13 percent. Ford did enjoy some good news with the performance of its new Escape, which racked up 23,148 sales in September, enough to lead its segment. Early signs suggest that those who were worried that the slicker, costlier new Escape couldn't replicate the popularity of the last generation's boxy bravado needn't have - at least for the moment. The Chevrolet Cruze also appears to have captured its segment's sales crown for the month of September with 25,787 sales. The mid-size sedan segment, which has heated up with a number of new totally redesigned models, was easily won by the Toyota Camry with 34,252 sales.*Brands and companies are displayed in descending order according to their percentage change in volume sales. There were 25 selling days in September 2012 versus 25 selling days in September 2011, so the change in monthly sales volume will be the same as the change in average daily sales rate (DSR) for each brand/company. En plena aceleración su V8 de 6.2 litros suena como una mezcla de muscle car y de avión de caza de la segunda guerra mundial a baja altitud. No cabe duda que forma de su carácter y es uno de los elementos que lo hacen muy especial. Ahora bien, si le quitamos ese V8 y lo sustituimos por una serie de baterías y motores eléctricos obtendremos el SL AMG Electric Drive, presentado en París con esta librea de azul anodizado-cromado y llantas blancas. Tiene toda la pinta de un concept car, pero no lo es. Se trata de la versión de producción que estará disponible en todo buen concesionario Mercedes-Benz y en los AMG Center. Recordemos que el SLS AMG Electric Drive cuenta con baterías de litio de ión de 60 kWh, cuatro motores eléctricos (uno en cada rueda) que desarrollan en total 552 kW, es decir unos 740 CV. Ejecuta el 0 a 100 km/h en 3,9 segundos, tiene una velocidad punta limitada a 250 km/h y 248 km de autonomía. No subas el volumen, está bien. Posted: 02 Oct 2012 12:24 PM PDT ![]() Quick Spin: 2012 Volkswagen Golf GTD Filed under: Performance, Europe, Hatchback, Volkswagen, Diesel, Quick Spins We're something of a broken record on Volkswagen's TDI family of diesels - torquey and efficient, they're really well-suited to the way Americans drive. We put that sentiment to a year-long test with a Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition not long ago, and enjoyed our time in what was basically an oil-burning GTI with a trunk. That is, until an unsolved catastrophic engine failure saw VW yank it away after just eight months. They subsequently replaced our Cup Street with a bog-standard Jetta TDI (in the new A6 generation), but the thrill was gone. Judging by our brief time with this Kermit Metallic, not-for-North-America Golf GTD - essentially a diesel GTI - we think we could learn to love again. And given that Volkswagen is freely handing this hatchback out to journalists in the States, we can say that there's some truth to the rumors that executives want to bring the next-gen model to the U.S. in 2014. We're ready when you are, VW...Driving Notes: Our old Jetta Cup Street had all of the sporty fixins' of the GLI, from its aero kit and firmed-up suspension to its more supportive plaid seats - but it still relied on the standard 140-horsepower, 236 pound-foot 2.0-liter diesel found in every other Jetta TDI. Not the GTD. Tweaks to the ECU programming take advantage of a different intake, new injectors, exhaust and a modified turbocharger to net 170 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. That puts it down an even 30 horses on a comparable GTI, but up 51 lb-ft. As a result, the GTD is plenty quick, but it's plainly a bit more reluctant with throttle response than the naturally aspirated gas GTI, with a 0-60 time of about eight seconds. Despite this, it's good fun, with great passing power. VW seems to have done a better job disguising the GTD's diesel clatter than what I remember of our long-term Jetta TDIs. The DSG dual-clutch gearbox probably matches the diesel's narrow rev-band better than a manual. Still, we're dying to find out if the clutch feel of the stick shift is better than on our recently departed Jetta TDI which was, to be polite, dreadful. Though there's no EPA guidance on this car since it isn't sold here, the 2013 Golf TDI with DSG nets 30/42 mpg ratings, and our brief drive time suggests that the GTD wouldn't be far afield from those numbers. The 2013 GTI rings up 24/33, so there's a huge difference. It's worth noting that we've observed similar-to-EPA numbers in other TDIs even while working them fairly hard, something we can't say for their gas equivalents. Range is huge, too. It's hard for us to compare handling to the standard GTI, because our test car was fitted with non-U.S. optional adaptive damping. It delivered a good balance of immediacy and ride comfort, but so does the standard GTI - we'd just assume do without the added cost and complexity. Pictures just don't adequately express how shockingly green this paint is. It's not for everyone, but we got compliments and absolutely love it. Let's hope VW brings it over, even on the standard GTI. How can we tell this isn't a U.S. model just by sitting inside? The cupholder features a removable bottle opener. You know, for mineralvasser.
