Desde entonces, la marca fue funcionando al ralentí hasta que el pasado 30 de septiembre dejó oficialmente de fabricar coches. En la web de la compañía se puede ver un lacónico mensaje en el que se explica que "el 30 de septiembre de 2012 la producción del Artega GT ha cesado. Nos gustaría agradecer el apoyo y la comprensión expresados a la compañía". Artega no cierra sin más, pues Paragon AG hizo efectiva la compra de Artega el 1 de octubre. Pero no tiene intención de reanudar la producción. La firma de recambios alemana estaba interesada en Artega por sus ingenieros e instalaciones. Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Performance, Lotus, Earnings/Financials, Rumormill, Luxury Two years ago, we were gobsmacked when humble Lotus shocked the automotive world by wheeling out no fewer than five new models - admittedly in various stages of development - at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The ambitious onslaught of new sheetmetal came at the behest of then-CEO Danny Bahar who aimed to broaden the British marque's appeal by dramatically expanding its portfolio. Bahar was later thrown out by new Malaysian owners DRB-Hicom in a management shakeup that seems to still be, well, shaking out. Bahar was deposed over accusations of financial wrongdoing and the controversial executive has fired back with a $10.6M lawsuit. Against this chaotic background, a cornerstone of Lotus' revival plans hinged on the rebirth of its Esprit supercar (shown in 2010 concept form above). According to new reports, however, the Esprit has been cancelled, a victim of the company's uncertain finances and direction. Depending on which rumor you choose to believe, the two-seat coupe was slated to receive a house-built V8 and possibly turbocharging or hybrid power. In fact, General Motors and Ford will be rolling out their third-quarter earnings just in time for the presidential balloting, and while the U.S. economy has buoyed the industry at a level few might have expected at the start of 2012, the latest quarterly numbers will be hard hit by events on the other side of the Atlantic. Between them, General Motors and Ford are likely to lose in excess of $500 million - some analysts put the red ink closer to $1 billion - for the July-September quarter. And for the full year, the domestics could run up a deficit closer to $4 billion if you include Fiat SpA, the Italian partner of Chrysler, according to analysts' consensus estimates. Paul A. But last month, the automaker quietly issued an expansion of this recall that includes 820,000 Civic and Pilot models from the 2002-2003 and 2004-2005 model years, respectively. Honda began notifying owners of these newly affected vehicles in September. A possible wiring fault in the headlight switch could cause the low-beams to not work in these affected models, and we certainly don't need to tell you why that could be hazardous. Honda has stated that no crashes or injuries have been reported in relation to this issue. We may just now be reporting on the headlight recall expansion, but it comes right on the heels of another big Honda recall. Earlier this week, the Japanese automaker announced a recall of over 570,000 Accord and Acura TL models due to faulty power steering hoses. Posted: 04 Oct 2012 03:26 PM PDT Tesla Motors CEO on production rate, positive cash flow and DOE loan Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors, Legislation and Policy A new blog post by Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk shows a bit of attitude, reacting to the way the company's stock and reputation took a bit of a hit last week (despite its supercharger announcement) after downsizing its 2012 production and resulting revenue estimates. Tesla also announced a follow on stock offering, which had some pessimists pouring themselves some long tall glasses of haterade. Elon's response? Well, he makes it clear that things are going pretty well, actually. Tesla, he says, is doing another funding round as a means of risk reduction, not out of necessity. Wham! Further, the automaker will likely be cash flow positive by the end of next month. Bop! Also, despite being a few weeks behind in production - due, in part, to flood damage at a supplier - the company has built 500 vehicle bodies, finished 359 Model S sedans and placed over 250 in the hands of customers. Pow! He also goes on to state that Tesla has never suggested postponing its DOE loan repayment. Yes, it did renegotiate some terms that weren't part of the original arrangement, but the federal agency is still confident in the company's ability to pay up and is, in fact, bullish about Tesla's future. Finally, he reiterates once again that the company fully intends to pay back the DOE "at the earliest opportunity." There has even been talk of early repayment. Filed under: Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Mercedes-Benz, Electric The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a promising, small family vehicle, but Car and Driver is reporting that the new B-Class is only coming to the U.S. as the zero-emission Electric Drive model. It would appear that if Mercedes does proceed with this plan, it will likely be positioned as a premium alternative to dedicated green family vehicles like Toyota Prius v and Ford C-Max. While Mercedes won't be the first luxury automaker to venture into the B-segment, it will likely be the first to bring an all-electric vehicle to this market. Using a Tesla-sourced lithium-ion battery pack, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive is expected to be able to travel up to 124 miles at a go, with a top speed of 93 miles per hour. Last week, we showed you a rendering of the Toyota Smart INSECT, but now we're getting our first live look at the single-seat electric vehicle. Although its design is very bug-like, the Smart INSECT's name is actually an acronym that stands for "Information Network Social Electric City Transporter," and it is a smart vehicle in that it allows users to stay connected in the same manner they can with a smartphone. That isn't to say this car doesn't look the part of its INSECT name with a bug-eyed face and wing-like doors, but this concept is all about showing of the technology. Some of the tech gadgetry found inside the car includes motion sensors, voice recognition and even Toyota's cloud-based "Smart Center." Using Microsoft Kinect, the car can recognize when the driver is approaching the vehicle and open the corresponding door depending on which side of the car they are on. Once inside, the driver can connect to a virtual operator to control systems like navigation and audio, and it can also connect to the driver's home via a smartphone to control systems like door locks and air conditioning. That includes safety equipment. Nico Rosberg took some time off from of his Formula One driving duties at Mercedes AMG Petronas to sit down with a camera crew to track the evolution of the helmet from the jaunty leather caps of 1946 to the carbon-weave shells used today. Rosberg's helmet weighs in at just 2.5 pounds but can withstand serious impacts without deforming and protect the wearer from heat of up to 1,472 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 seconds. Rosberg's helmet can also hold up to a shot from a projectile moving 1,345 feet per second. Very impressive, and entirely necessary for a sport that sees racers reach ludicrous speeds on track. Such is the bicycle's popularity in Italy that purchases of the pedal-powered two wheelers have eclipsed automobile sales for the first time since World War II. According to The Christian Science Monitor, last year 1.75 million bikes were sold in Italy, compared to 1.748 million motor vehicles. Contributing to this trend are rising fuel prices and hefty costs associated with keeping a car on the road. Gas prices recently hit €2 a liter ($9.50 a gallon), and the average cost of ownership is estimated at around €7,0000 ($9,000) a year. There is also the sheer congestion associated with driving in many parts of Italy. Narrow roads and a high level of automobile ownership (6 in 10 own cars, one of the highest rates in the world), have made for cramped streets in many Italian cities. The author of the report notes that a several-mile journey in the heart of Rome is quicker by bike than taxi.Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne is among those feeling the heat from this trend, admitting "Anyone operating in the automotive sector in Europe today is experiencing varying degrees of unhappiness. The European car market is a disaster." Fiat released industry figures that showed September auto sales down 25 percent compared to the same period in 2011. Antonio Della Venezia, president of the Italian Federation of Bike Lovers told Italian paper La Republica, "People who have only ever driven cars are changing their thinking. I don't think Italy will go back to the levels of car sales that we saw before 2008." He may be right. Many families are downsizing to just one car, participating in carpool groups, and purchasing bicycles as alternatives to the rising costs of automobile ownership. Such is the bicycle's popularity in Italy that purchases of the pedal-powered two wheelers have eclipsed automobile sales for the first time since World War II. According to The Christian Science Monitor, last year 1.75 million bikes were sold in Italy, compared to 1.748 million motor vehicles. Contributing to this trend are rising fuel prices and hefty costs associated with keeping a car on the road. Gas prices recently hit €2 a liter ($9.50 a gallon), and the average cost of ownership is estimated at around €7,0000 ($9,000) a year. There is also the sheer congestion associated with driving in many parts of Italy. Narrow roads and a high level of automobile ownership (6 in 10 own cars, one of the highest rates in the world), have made for cramped streets in many Italian cities. The author of the report notes that a several-mile journey in the heart of Rome is quicker by bike than taxi.Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne is among those feeling the heat from this trend, admitting "Anyone operating in the automotive sector in Europe today is experiencing varying degrees of unhappiness. The European car market is a disaster." Fiat released industry figures that showed September auto sales down 25 percent compared to the same period in 2011. Antonio Della Venezia, president of the Italian Federation of Bike Lovers told Italian paper La Republica, "People who have only ever driven cars are changing their thinking. Monthly plug-in vehicle sales eclipsed the 5,000 mark for the first time ever because of record sales for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in and near-record demand for the Toyota Prius Plug-In, while the Ford C-Max Hybrid wagon became that company's best-selling hybrid in just its first month of sales. El emirato de Abu Dhabi, a través de su fondo de inversión Aabar (filial de la International Petroleum Investment Co.) estaría transfiriendo los derechos de los últimos 3% de sus acciones en Daimler al Deutsche Bank. Según el informe anual de Daimler publicado en febrero Aabar poseía fisicamente el 3% de las acciones, tenía derecho a voto a altura del 5% y poseía en total el 9% de las acciones, si incluíamos las acciones que prestó a terceros para financiar su compra. En marzo de 2009, Aabar compró el 9% del grupo Daimler por un valor de 1.950 millones de euros, siendo así el mayor accionista de la compañía. La mayoría de esas acciones se prestaron casi al mismo tiempo para financiar su compra. Inicialmente, Aabar tenía la intención de comprar hasta le 15% del grupo y Daimler debía construir un centro de formación en el emirato. Finalmente, en abril de este año, Aaber empezó a vender sus acciones que poseía junto a Daimler en Tesla así como en el equipo de Fórmula 1. Posted: 04 Oct 2012 12:37 PM PDT Quick Spin: 2013 BMW X6 M Filed under: Performance, Crossover, BMW, Quick Spins When it comes to automotive oddities, the BMW X6 is one for the books thanks to its unusual chopped-roof crossover styling - a combination that BMW has long referred to as a "Sports Activity Coupe." But the BMW X6 M, the low volume high-performance variant, turns things up with oversized Matchbox-like wheels, a criminally powerful engine under hood and plenty of go-fast goodies. While it is far from appearing dated, BMW nevertheless made a few tweaks for the 2013 model year. Driving Notes Subtle enhancements include a 'power bulge' hood (identical to the one used on the now-defunct BMW X6 ActiveHybrid), minor cosmetic tweaks to the BMW-signature kidney grille and headlight improvements (HID beams are standard with LED headlights new to the options list). Wrapping up the changes, the brake calipers have been painted "M Blue" and front sport seats are now fitted at no additional cost. (The M graphics, and other carbon fiber components as shown above on our test vehicle, are additional options or dealer accessories.) The X6 M drives just as wickedly as it looks. The twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 pumps out a very impressive 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, which is enough muscle to propel the 5,324-pound five-passenger CUV to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds (top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph). Massive tires (275/40R20 up front and 315/35R20 in the rear) and permanent all-wheel drive means the M has the tenacity and grip of a gecko, while sport suspension tuning helps it maintain its poise on even the most challenging roads. The X6 M is a real hoot to drive. The commanding seating position, bolstered sport seats and thick steering wheel immediately put the driver in the proper mindset. It seriously scoots once the turbochargers are spooled (leaving an aggressive exhaust note in its wake) and the well-tuned underpinnings deliver mass-defying agility. Despite the crossover's kick-in-the pants performance, we found the X6 M a single-mission vehicle - the hatchback is big, but its utility value is rather low. Not helping matters is a high curb weight, high drag coefficient (0.38) and a thirsty engine. Those combine to mean owners will spend lots of time opening the fuel filler door (the EPA rates the X6 M at 12 miles per gallon city and 17 mpg highway). Feeding the beast is costly, but so is its base price.
