Video: Watch Typhoon Jelawat flip a car, toss a dumpster in Japan
Filed under: Japan, Safety, Videos Typhoon Jelwat made landfall in Okinawa, Japan over the weekend causing plenty of damage in its wake, and these two videos below show just how powerful a weakening tropical storm can be. According to The Weather Channel, when the storm hit Okinawa, it had sustained winds of 83 miles per hour and gusts up to 115 mph which obviously is enough to throw cars around a parking lot like toys. In the first video, U.S. Marines stationed at Camp Kisner record cars being pushed around the parking lot before a small car tips over, slides across the parking lot and then tumbles through the air. The second video shows a cherry Mazda RX-7 at Kadena Air Force Base come within feet of becoming another victim of the storm as a dumpster slides right past the car slamming into a minivan. As bad as the videos look, things could have been much worse, as Jelawat had been recorded as a Super Typhoon with winds around 160 mph just earlier last week and was downgraded to a less powerful typhoon before making landfall. Check out the carnage the wind can cause in the videos below, but beware, there is quite a bit of explicit Not Safe For Work language in both.Continue reading Watch Typhoon Jelawat flip a car, toss a dumpster in JapanWatch Typhoon Jelawat flip a car, toss a dumpster in Japan originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 19:58:00 EST. Spy Shots: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado spied, our best look yet
Filed under: Spy Photos, Truck, Work, Chevrolet, GMChevrolet is playing around with the buzz machine for its upcoming 2014 Silverado; showing off just one "spy shot" along with a short press release about the pickup, both on its own media website and on its Facebook page. That's cute and all, but while General Motors is trying to up its social media cred, hard-working spy photographers are bringing in a truckload of more detailed Silverado images. Here we see the pickup with almost all of its heavy black camouflage removed, relative to the last time we spotted it, and in what seems to be close-to-production form. The 2014 model is, in all fairness, shaped an awful lot like the current truck. But, in a segment where form is very much based on function and where smaller details set models apart, that is to be expected. Under the hood there could be a lot of change for the new Silverado, however. A fifth-generation small block V8 engine is said to be the primary powerplant, with an aluminum head, direct injection and cylinder deactivation all probable. Meanwhile, a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 could also be brewing as a direct answer for Ford and its EcoBoost F-150. Have a closer look at the new Silverado in our gallery of images or scroll down to read Chevy's brief press release.Continue reading 2014 Chevrolet Silverado spied, our best look yet2014 Chevrolet Silverado spied, our best look yet originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 19:29:00 EST. Video: 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe gets shockingly sexy ad from Amsterdam
Filed under: Europe, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Crossover, Hyundai We're not sure we've ever come across a vehicle capable of turning street-loads of women breathless and sweaty, and we've driven the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. Even so, a new European ad for the five-door crossover seems to convey that's exactly what will happen when the fairer sex lays eyes on the machine. How's that for truth in advertising? Amsterdam-based ad house Edge Design whipped up the 45-second spot, titled "Upskirt" to show off the newly designed Santa Fe. With plenty of blowing garments and sultry actresses, there's no missing the ad's sensuality. We just can't quite wrap our minds around how it all fits with a Korean family hauler. You can take a peek at the clip for yourself below, just be warned that the spot may be Not Safe For Work depending on the severity of the totalitarian regime under which you toil.Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe gets shockingly sexy ad from Amsterdam2013 Hyundai Santa Fe gets shockingly sexy ad from Amsterdam originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 19:01:00 EST. Nissan says class action lawsuit over Leaf batteries "lacks merit"
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Legislation and Policy The plot thickens on the health and durability of the Nissan Leaf's battery pack. A class action lawsuit has been filed in federal court by a Leaf owner accusing Nissan of covering up the electric vehicle's range reality. California plaintiff Humberto Klee says Nissan is advertising the Leaf as being able to drive up 100 miles on a charge, depending on variables such as road conditions and weather, but Klee alleges that Nissan has not been honest about the car's real-world range. According to the suit, Nissan's advertised driving range is based on the vehicle's performance only after charging the battery to 100-percent capacity. Yet the suit says Nissan tells owners not to do so because that kind of charging could cause battery damage. The lawsuit, known as Humberto Daniel Klee, et al. v. Nissan North America, Inc., et al., has been filed in the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, Western Division. The crux of it can be found online (here in PDF) and reads, in part: Before purchase or lease, Nissan failed to disclose its own recommendations that owners avoid charging the battery beyond 80% in order to mitigate battery damage and failed to disclose that Nissan's estimated 100 mile range was based on a full charge battery, which is contrary to Nissan's own recommendation for battery charging. But wait, there's more. The lawsuits also claims Nissan failed to disclose or intentionally neglected to reveal a design defect in the Leaf's battery system that causes the Leaf to suffer "widespread, severe and premature loss of driving range, battery capacity and battery life." The class actions lawsuit is being brought on behalf of a proposed class of all California and Arizona consumers who purchased or leased any Model Year 2011 or 2012 Nissan Leaf hatchback, even though the actual numbers (thus far) of affected "wilting" Leafs in Arizona has been small. Plaintiffs are asking the court to rule that Nissan must remove and replace battery systems with a suitable alternative product, reform its battery warranty, cover the loss of battery capacity under warranty and reimburse class members for any repairs made. Nissan's response is that the lawsuit "lacks merit," and the automaker is standing by both the battery and how it has marketed and explained the Leaf to buyers. The company's official statement, provided to AutoblogGreen and available below, expresses regret "that a very small number of LEAF owners are dissatisfied." Nissan also concedes that EVs might not be right for everyone, "But if you're determined to have minimal impact on the environment then an all-electric vehicle remains the only pathway to zero-emissions mobility." Stay tuned for more as this story develops.Continue reading Nissan says class action lawsuit over Leaf batteries "lacks merit"Nissan says class action lawsuit over Leaf batteries "lacks merit" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 18:30:00 EST. Report: 2014 Mazda3 to shed hundreds of pounds; diesel, Mazdaspeed variants possible
Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Hatchback, Mazda, Diesel According to Car and Driver, the next-generation Mazda3 is set to undergo an extensive overhaul, similar to what the Japanese automaker has done with its larger Mazda6 sedan. On the powertrain front, expect the still-new 155-horsepower 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder to carry over. But since the next Mazda3 will likely shed hundreds of pounds thanks to the company's lighter Skyactiv-tuned platform (a good chunk of which will be shared with the CX-5), the 2.0-liter engine should return improved fuel economy and performance since there won't be so much heft to cart around. Currently, the 2.0-liter Mazda3 returns up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway.C/D also states that a diesel-powered version of the compact Mazda3 is under consideration, as is a new version of the turbocharged Mazdaspeed3. Visually, expect the new Mazda3 to receive the full brunt of the automaker's new Kodo styling language. That isn't a bad thing, though - both the new CX-5 and Mazda6 are handsome vehicles, and we think the aggressive headlamps and upright grille will translate nicely to the smaller package. C/D has worked up a rendering of what the Mazda3 could look like in hatchback form with the new styling direction, so head over there to check it out.2014 Mazda3 to shed hundreds of pounds; diesel, Mazdaspeed variants possible originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 18:01:00 EST. Spy Shots: 2015 Smart ForFour caught in early testing
Filed under: Spy Photos, Budget, Hatchback, Smart In the U.S., we've come to know the Smart brand just for its ForTwo, but other markets have seen a wider variety of models from the Daimler brand including the Smart ForFour that was produced from 2004 through 2006. This bigger vehicle from Smart added two extra doors and a rear seat for some passenger space. While we've already seen spy photos for the next ForTwo, judging by these spy shots of a stretched-wheelbase test mule, Smart is hard at work developing a next-generation ForFour as well. Although the previous ForFour was a result of a collaboration between Daimler and Mitsubishi, the new model is going to be a venture between Daimler and Nissan/Renault. Under the Penske ownership, it was announced that the new Smart B-segment car would be based on the Nissan Micra (which was later scrapped), but we hear that this car will actually ride on a new platform that will eventually be the basis for the next Renault Twingo. Like the current and upcoming ForTwo, the 2015 ForFour will be a rear-engine/rear-wheel-drive car. While we don't have any information as to what will power the new Smart ForFour, we can almost guarantee that it (along with the new ForTwo) will have a styling that will be very similar to recent Smart concept cars like the ForStars, For-Us and ForVision. The new ForTwo is expected to go on sale in 2014 with the bigger ForFour hitting dealers a year later.2015 Smart ForFour caught in early testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:30:00 EST. Video: How Colorado beat out rest of the world for setting of Forza Horizon, plus barn finds!
Filed under: Videos, Toys/GamesTurn 10 studios has released another video bringing us behind the scenes of its upcoming extension to the Forza Motorsport franchise, Forza Horizon. Hitting store shelves on October 23, Forza Horizon leaves the race tracks behind by putting players in an open-world environment that's modeled after Colorado. How did Colorado get the nod? As the video explains, it was one of 30 real-world locations being considered, but its combinations of excellent driving roads and breathtaking scenery made it the obvious choice. Game developers took trips to the Centennial State and returned with hundreds of hours of video and over 50,000 images from which to build their own version. What they built is a fictionalized version of Colorado assembled from all of its best parts: plains, canyons, lakes, forests, mountains, red rock formations, towns and, of course, the Horizon festival around which the entire game is based. According to Turn 10, you'll be able to drive the same cars from Forza Motorsport 4 in Forza Horizon, and your game world will be populated with AI cars and other real players driving their own cars via Xbox Live. Challenging them to a race is as simple as pulling up alongside their car and hitting the X button. You both take off and follow a course that the game creates dynamically in real time. The coolest new feature talked about in the video is barn finds. There are apparently historic cars hidden in barns throughout the Horizon world. When you find one, you can have it restored to running order and use it as your own ride. Check out how it works in the video below. Lastly, Turn 10 has announced that a Season Pass for the game will cost you $50 (or 4,000 Microsoft Points) and get you the "Forza Horizon" Expansion pack, six game-car packs with six vehicles each, as well as five exclusive season-pass vehicles and the launch-day pack.Continue reading How Colorado beat out rest of the world for setting of Forza Horizon, plus barn finds! How Colorado beat out rest of the world for setting of Forza Horizon, plus barn finds! originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 16:58:00 EST. Report: VW Bulli production hopes dead, 313-mpg XL1 coming next year
Filed under: Minivan/Van, Paris Motor Show, Crossover, VolkswagenVolkswagen had a lot going on at this year's Paris Motor Show, including, it seems, dishing to Britain's What Car? about some product plans. VW board member Ulrich Hackenberg has gone on record saying that the Bulli concept van, as shown at the last Geneva Motor Show, is not currently planned for production. That runs counter to recent reports that the German company was considering a vehicle in the small CUV segment that a Bulli might fill, though it doesn't discount the earlier rumor entirely. Hackenberg cites a shortage of demand for a production Bulli as the reason for the project getting shelved. Love for the original Microbus remains high both inside VW and in the public at large, but it remains to be seen if nostalgia alone can be counted on to drive unit sales for something wearing the Bulli's unique shape. Less surprising is word that VW is going forward with a production version of its groundbreaking XL1 - which makes sense, as we've already seen prototypes in spy photos. The two-seat, 300-plus-miles-per-gallon car is reportedly earmarked to go on sale in limited numbers. Where, and exactly how limited those numbers are remains to be seen.VW Bulli production hopes dead, 313-mpg XL1 coming next year originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 16:31:00 EST. EnerDel still in battery business, now working with Purdue on li-ion research
Filed under: EV/Plug-in You can't say EnerDel isn't still giving it the old college try. In this case, the Indianapolis-based company is making its presence felt at Purdue University, about 65 miles away. EnerDel is giving the university's College of Technology a collection of lithium-ion battery cells and research data worth about $263,000. The gift complements the $4.7 million grant that the university and Ivy Tech Community College got from the U.S. Department of Energy to advance training geared towards the electric-energy industry. Earlier this month, EnerDel CEO David Roberts said the struggling company was trying to rebuild by lessening its dependence on electric vehicles and putting more emphasis on batteries geared towards grid and home energy storage as well as medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. That said, in July, EnerDel won a second contract to make lithium-ion batteries for the all-electric version of the Volvo C30. EnerDel won its first contract with Volvo three years ago. EnerDel's parent Ener1 declared bankruptcy in January, about seven months after Norwegian EV maker Think, in which Ener1 was an investor, did the same. EnerDel restructured in March after Ener1 received $86 million in new equity and debt-holder agreements. Check out the press release on the Purdue gift below.Continue reading EnerDel still in battery business, now working with Purdue on li-ion researchEnerDel still in battery business, now working with Purdue on li-ion research originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 16:10:00 EST. Report: Ford, GM co-developing 9- and 10-speed gearboxes
Filed under: Technology, Ford, GM The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid and Ford with partner with General Motors on new transmission technology. Has anyone dusted off that old Mayan calendar lately? We're not sure that a Ford/GM tech share speaks to the end of days, but we're not ruling it out, either. Seriously though, Detroit's two heavyweights, companies that have battled each other since the dawn of the automobile (or close, anyway) are in discussions about working jointly on some very aggressive new transmission projects in the name lessening development costs for each. It's not the first time the two automakers have teamed up on transmissions, hyperbole to the contrary, either. If all goes to plan, Automotive News says GM will be taking the lead on a nine-speed cogswapper that will be used in front-wheel-drive applications. Ford, meanwhile, will be working on a 10-speed transmission that will find a home in rear-drive products, namely trucks and performance vehicles. The goal of the new transmission technologies - both automatics, by the way - is twofold: greater fuel economy and a more refined driving experience. The "refinement" here has to do with less noise and vibration, most likely, as the many-ratio transmissions have to rev less than they would with fewer forward gears. The new technology is seen as must-have for the domestic automakers, both of which are hoping to catch up with a competitive set that is now offering seven-, eight- and nine-speed transmissions. Crosstown rival Chrysler, for instance, has worked with German transmission specialist ZF to put an eight-speed auto in its 300 sedan, and has plans to introduce a nine-speed affair sometime in the near future.Ford, GM co-developing 9- and 10-speed gearboxes originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 15:45:00 EST.
Gallery: Citroën C6 (2005-2012)Continue reading El Citroën C6 dice adiósEl Citroën C6 dice adiós originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 15:33:00 EST.
