| Posted: 28 Oct 2012 05:01 PM PDT  Ecotality loses legal challenge to California's settlement with NRG Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Legislation and Policy A California appellate court judge has dismissed a lawsuit against California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for its legal settlement earlier this year granting energy utility NRG more than $102.5 million to install electric vehicle charging networks in the state. Ecotality, an electric vehicle supply equipment company, had filed suit in May challenging CPUC for settling with NRG and its subsidiary Dynergy for its part in the 2000-2001 energy scandal. California went after Dynergy for doing something similar to the infamous and now defunct Enron - dramatically overcharging Californians for electricity. Ecotality's suit called into question the legal reasoning behind CPUC's decision to hold Dynergy accountable for overcharging consumers by taking away competitive and fair opportunities from other EVSE suppliers. Ecotality filed suit to stop the state from allowing out-of-state utility NRG to install its eVgo charger network and create a monopoly. The CPUC settlement allows NRG to install 200 480-volt fast chargers, wire 1,000 locations to be EV ready and set up the groundwork for up to 10,000 Level 2 charging stations. Most of the fast chargers will be set up between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Under the NRG charging network, charging stations will be set up on a pay-as-you-go basis for the first five years. For fast chargers, users will be billed a cap of $10 to charge during off-peak hours and $15 for on-peak hours. Elsewhere, NRG has been able to charge users a monthly subscription fee, like eVgo is doing in Texas. California doesn't have many fast chargers in place right now, and EV advocates have been clamoring for more installations of DC fast and Level 2 public chargers. Despite the dismissal, Ecotality won't be leaving the state over it. Each entrant received its own FR-S, $15,000 and three months to turn its show-car vision into reality. Judges at the show will score each ride on a variety of merits, and the winning builder will go home with a $10,000 check. Chicago native John Toca's Carbon Stealth FR-S boasts a Vortech Supercharger as well as a host of Cusco suspension bits. A full body kit, wheels and a suite of high-end audio components define the coupe, while a custom alcantara interior and leather Reacaro buckets add to the show car's flavor. If we had to pick a winner right now, it would probably be Daniel Song's FR-S GT (above). The Orange County, California resident decided to eschew the typical show car regimen for a pared-down GT racer look. The car features a widebody kit penned by JONSIBAL along with a full roll cage, a Sparco racing seat and plenty of carbon fiber. Song's FR-S uses the same Vortech Supercharger as Toca's creation. Of course, we're fond of Chris Basselgia's "minty FReSh" FR-S, too. En un mundo consumista como el de hoy en día, parece que si no tienes "tropecientos" caballos bajo tu capó, no puedes divertirte. La realidad es bien distinta. Nuestro protagonista de la sección de "usado, sí, pero interesante" en esta ocasión es una buena muestra de que con poco dinero, cualquiera puede hacerse con un coche realmente entretenido con el que cubrir sus necesidades de movilidad, sin renunciar por ello a pasar buenos ratos tras el aro del volante, con sonrisas entre curva y curva en carreteras de montaña. Se trata del original Fiat Cinquecento de los años noventa, en su versión Sporting. No es un coche con el que cruzar el país de punta a punta, sino una herramienta de diario, con la que ir al trabajo, a la compra, llevar al peque al cole, al perro al campo... He begins with the question "How do you get a design story?" and then walks us through Jaguar's to address the issue of making the most of a brand's heritage while keeping things new and fresh. It's a timely discussion because Thompson is also behind the new Jaguar F-Type which, according to his talk, is the latest in Jaguar's line of "beautiful fast luxury cars with glamour." Thompson doesn't shirk "the sad years of Jaguar," either, called out as being 1968 to 2004, when they "essentially made the same-looking car." La introducción de su hermano más versátil lógicamente repercutirá en un descenso todavía más mayor de las ventas del coupé, haciendo insostenible su producción. En venta desde 2007, este modelo obtuvo muy buenos resultados comerciales durante los dos primeros años de vida, pero poco después la demanda comenzó a caer de manera drástica y actualmente las ventas son realmente flojas. Su habitáculo pequeño, un maletero poco práctico y la carrocería únicamente con tres puertas han limitado claramente su difusión. Volvo Cars ha comunicado que a lo largo del mes de diciembre cesará la producción del C30, dejando al V40 como único integrante del segmento C. Al menos el nuevo modelo ha llegado pisando fuerte y ya cuenta con un importante número de pedidos. More than 250 horsepower goes from the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder T5, through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, on to 18-inch wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires. Y allí BMW tenía preparado un evento en paralelo al concurso donde pudo probar uno de esos modelos extraños, hoy algo olvidados, y que tanto llamaron la atención cuando salieron al mercado. Hablamos del BMW Z1 que a principios de julio de este año cumplió 25 años. Hoy en día el Z1 es un vehículo extremadamente raro, se fabricaron tan sólo 8.000 unidades entre 1989 y 1991, de las cuales 6.500 unidades se vendieron en Alemania. Curiosamente, el coche nunca se llegó a vender en Estados Unidos por culpa de las puertas de apertura horizontal, principalmente, y por los faros carenados. Con 3,92 m de largo por 1,69 m de ancho, el Z1 goza de su propio chasis, aunque es cierto que para su fabricación se utilizaron numerosos componentes del BMW 325i E30. El chasis cuenta con alguna que otra innovación, como en el tren trasero en Z. Se trata de un peculiar eje multilink compuesto por un brazo tirado, un tirante superior lateral, otro inferior en diagonal, muelles helicoidales y una barra estabilizadora. Muchos BMW utilizaron ese eje multilink posteriormente, así como el Rover 75. Del BMW 325i recuperaba las suspensiones delanteras, la dirección, la transmisión y el 6 cilindros en línea de 2.494 cc y 170 CV. El motor está prácticamente situado en posición central delantera, 30 cm más atrás que en un 325i e inclinado en un ángulo de 20º. Por eso, aunque no sea un coche ligero (pesa 1.290 kg en vacío), aporta sensaciones de conducción únicas. El diseñador ha sido homenajeado con una muestra que arranca ahora en la sede del museo de la marca de Maranello. Eurocarblog, for example, has a new story about a Twizy decorated in such a way that it is, "blatantly inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso," in order to take part in a Milan exhibition dedicated to the painter. But Renault's latest suggestion for the odd little electric vehicle (EV) is one we really didn't see coming. This week, Renault offered firefighters in Paris the chance to test out a Twizy that had been "adapted to firefighters' needs." That means that the minimal back seat was taken out and replaced with emergency equipment, specifically "two fire extinguishers, two oxygen tanks, a fire suit, a helmet and a first-aid kit." Starting in November, the prototype will be used for an eight-month period as a support vehicle, "for early interventions ahead of the arrival of more consequential lifesaving equipment."
