La factoría de Southampton, donde se montan vehículos industriales ligeros (Transit "chasis cabina" carrozables), y que ocupa a 534 trabajadores, también estaría a punto de anunciar su cierre inminente. Esta factoría ensambló menos de 30.000 unidades de este tipo de furgoneta el año pasado, estando muy por debajo del 50% de explotación respecto a su capacidad productiva instalada. De acuerdo con analistas consultados por Bloomberg, la idea de Ford sería traspasar esta producción a la planta turca que el óvalo azul comparte con Koc Holding, cuya capacidad productiva es de 320.000 unidades al año, y actualmente trabaja sobre las 250.000. Con este cierre, sumado al de Genk, Ford, que además tiene una agresiva estrategia de lanzamiento de productos en Europa, pretende dar solución a su sangría económica en el viejo continente, que le costará unos 1.000 millones de euros este 2012. Después del tortazo que le dieron en los entrenamientos, el Nissan DeltaWing estuvo listo a tiempo para la carrera del Petit Le Mans. Después de ese incidente y de las pasadas 24 Horas de Le Mans, el DeltaWing corría el riesgo de ser famoso solo por sus accidentes, pero finalmente pudo terminar las 1.000 millas de carrera en Road Atlanta, Georgia. Pero el coche inscrito por Nissan y Highcroft Racing hizo algo más que terminar la preuba, se hizo con el quinto puesto absoluto. Nada mal para un coche experimental en su segunda carrera. Incluso podría haber logrado un mejor puesto si las diversas salidas del safety-car no hubieran roto el ritmo de la carrera. Al final de las calificaciones, el DeltaWing pilotado por el dúo Lucas Ordoñez y Gunnar Jeanette terminó en el top 10, pero debido a su estatus de coche experimental fue relegado al final de la parrilla en la salida. Pronto paso de la posición 42 a la 8. Como en otras competiciones, gran parte de la carrera se jugó en las paradas en los boxes y el equipo Ordoñez-Jeanette no hizo muchas paradas en boxes...a diferencia de sus rivales. Recordemos que el DeltaWing pesa la mitad que un prototipo de ALMS y tiene la mitad de resistencia aerodinámica (debido a su forma en delta); la consecuencia siendo un menor consumo en carburante y neumáticos. But amidst all of the outrageousness, there are usually a handful of sober, production-intent models that show up as well. Such is the case with the Chevrolet Sonic Dusk sedan that General Motors is revealing today. The Dusk started life as one of many Sonic concepts on display in Vegas last year, and the new trim will show up at Chevrolet dealerships in 2014, bringing an upscale vibe to the subcompact's sedan range. Setting this Sonic apart from lesser models, the Dusk will come exclusively in a Ashen Grey hue while the rest of the sedan's appearance is spruced up with matte finished trim on the grille, door handles and rear decklid in addition to stainless steel trim used for the lower window moldings. The Sonic Dusk will also receive a slick set of wheels that feature the same design as the Chevrolet Camaro Dusk that was first introduced at the 2009 SEMA Show (a car that went on sale earlier this summer). This Sonic also packs a stylish black-and-tan interior - including black leather seats with tan inserts and suede accents - and Chevy's MyLink infotainment system as standard fit. Like other upper-level Sonic models, the Dusk will be powered by Chevy's 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. During a Mini Moto race in Sandy Hook, Maryland last weekend, the fourth-place rider low-sides his bike but is instantly hit by the rider behind him. The fallen rider is gaffed just under the chin of his helmet by the other racer's handlebars, which drags him off into the grass. While we're sure the whole incident felt about the same as being punched on the chin, the rider definitely didn't suffer any major injuries. The LG Chem battery plant in Holland, MI - which was intended to make batteries for the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, but has not yet started production - is not only furloughing its 200 employees, those breaks are "extending and expanding," according to reports on local TV news station WZZM 13, citing statements from the company. The rolling furloughs started April 30. Just as alternative-energy vehicles have made a splash in the presidential election, the LG Chem plant story is playing in the Michigan Senate race between Democratin incumbent Debbie Stabenow and Republican challenger Pete Hoekstra. Stabenow's point of view is in line with Obama's, which is that plug-in vehicles are a good thing and that "we need to win the [global] race" to build them. Hoekstra, on the other hand, criticized the spending of taxpayer money on a plant that "hasn't produced a singe battery." There's a word potentially missing there, since the plant hasn't made a battery yet. LG Chem's line is that since plug-in vehicle demand is lower than expected, the workers are not being asked to make the packs. Yet. But once demand increases, "the plant will be fully operational," WZZM writes. LG Chem isn't saying when that might happen. LG Chem also points out that it isn't using federal money to pay for idle workers and will review any misspent money for potential refunds to the government. According to a company statement sent to the Grand Rapids Business Journal: Taxpayer money has not been wasted, because when the market demand justifies production, the facility will be utilized. More than 1,000 construction jobs were involved in building the facility, and 200 company jobs have been created, adding a solid boost to the local economy. LG Chem has the strongest motivation to operate the plant, because it has invested more than 50 percent, over $150 million, of the cost to construct the facility, so it will utilize the plant when the time is right. ... LG Chem feels a duty to take care of the people and to keep them on the team, so they can be ready for production. The company will not use (Department of Energy) grant money to pay for any idle time. It will review prior billings, and if any has been used, then that money will be refunded to the DOE. | Posted: 24 Oct 2012 05:19 PM PDT  Video: Watch Volvo's autonomous car system in action, before it shows up in 2014 Filed under: Safety, Technology, Videos It won't be much longer until cars are able to drive themselves, but until that day, automakers will continue to incorporate autonomous technologies into future vehicles for the sake of safety and convenience. Just about every automaker currently uses some sort of active vehicle control whether it be for parking, braking or staying in an intended lane, and Volvo continues to be on the forefront of such technologies by demonstrating what it refers to as a traffic jam assistance system. Volvo says that, on average, US drivers spend more than 100 hours per year in commuting, so it developed this new system to make some of the more stressful parts of commuting in bumper-to-bumper traffic a little easier to deal with. This new system controls the car's brakes, accelerator and steering, allowing it to actually follow the car in front including through bends in the road and around obstacles rather than just being able to keep speed (as with active cruise control systems). Volvo's is a driver-selectable system, too, that is intended to operate in slow-moving traffic at speeds of up to 31 miles per hour. Volvo is planning to start introducing this technology into production vehicles by 2014 as a part of the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) project which sounds like it should help spread technologies more quickly across its lineup through economies of scale. According to Automotive News, not only has the interest in owning a VW franchise gone up in the last few years, it has done so by some of the larger dealer groups in the country. Companies such as AutoNation and Penske Automotive are now VW franchisees, which the report attributes to the brand's impressive sales growth as well as its future growth plans. So far this year, VW has sold 323,089 cars, marking a 37-percent increase over last year and making Volkswagen the second-fastest growing brand in the US by volume after Chrysler. Projected sales totals for 2012 are currently 430,000 units which is almost half of the 800,000 annual sales that VW hopes to accomplish by 2018. Currently, VW has 607 dealers in the US, but it hopes to cautiously grow that number over the next few years by around 10 to 15 dealers per year as sales continue to increase. Ford would like you to do some math. THe PHEV starts at $33,745, and the Feds will subtract a tax credit worth up to $3,750. Then, if you live in California, where the Energi now qualifies for the green carpool lane sticker, the state will offer you another $1,500 rebate. That brings the total lowest price down to $28,495 in the Golden State, if you qualify for all the incentives, minus whatever you think the HOV lane access is worth. Now that the C-Max Energi has been approved for the Green Clean Air Vehicle Sticker, Ford says it will be likely to get the same benefit in other states with similar carpool laws, like Maryland, New York and Virginia. The General wants to increase its speed of innovation and believes it can do that by hiring 10,000 IT workers and doing 80-percent more of its own IT work instead of using outside companies. The plan calls for using HP software to accelerate the completion of tasks and delivery, which will save money. The new font of funds will be used to boost resources that aid innovation, and to open "innovation centers" in several states that will dedicate themselves to finding the next big things. The Red Rocker Edition of the Invader TC-3 will be unveiled at the SEMA Show next week, and playing off Hagar's I Can't Drive 55, only 55 of the special-edition models are being planned. The production version of the Invader was unveiled at last year's SEMA Show, and the trike is available as the open-top TR-3 or the TC-3 "coupe," but the Red Rocker Edition will only be offered on the latter model. This limited-edition model adds a unique black-on-red paint job with carbon fiber trim for the exterior and a suede-trimmed interior with Sammy's signature embroidered on the headrests. Speaking of the signature's, each of these Invaders will get a serial number plaque signed by The Red Rocker himself. There is no word how much the special-edition model will cost, but a standard TC-3 starts at $49,999. Only a couple of years ago, the Japanese giant seemed as vulnerable as a sumo wrestler with vertigo as it struggled to explain away a series of safety and quality snafus that forced it to recall an unprecedented 14 million vehicles worldwide. Then, just it was getting back on its feet, the maker was body-slammed by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that all but shut down the Japanese auto industry, leaving the industry giant struggling under severe inventory shortages for the rest of the year. Only a couple of years ago, the Japanese giant seemed as vulnerable as a sumo wrestler with vertigo. Yet, just like that sumo wrestler, Toyota has repeatedly shaken off the hardest hits. Despite somewhat mixed reviews, its Camry has continued to dominate the midsize passenger car segment - helping Toyota drive sales gains that have, in recent months, run triple the pace of the overall US automotive recovery. In fact, Toyota's loyalty rate is once again setting the industry benchmark, according to a new study by Experian Automotive, something that suggests the recent sales surge is more than just pent-up demand as buyers catch up after the shortages of 2011. So, what to make of the unexpected move by Standard & Poors, the influential financial ratings agency, which this month downgraded the maker's stock from a "Hold" to "Buy" rating? Now, to be sure, this was no panic move. S&P didn't tell investors to dump Toyota and race somewhere else with their money. No one is expecting the sort of financial collapse that accompanied the descent into bankruptcy at General Motors and Chrysler during the latter half of the past decade. But for those who thought Toyota was, indeed invulnerable, the downgrade may be hard to reconcile. Paul A. Ya sabemos que Nissan no lo lanzará al mercado y que tampoco servirá para adelantar el aspecto de futuros productos parecidos, pero lo cierto es que nos ha encantado e incluso apostaríamos a que de salir a la venta tendría su público. De momento nos tendremos que conformar con la decisión de la firma japonesa y disfrutar de las imágenes y el nuevo vídeo que hoy te traemos. It is actually a 2012 Volkswagen Kombi that is still in production in Brazil... for now. Due to tougher safety regulations, the Kombi's days are numbered as Brazil's government is requiring all new cars to come with dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes as standard equipment. No word on a replacement for the long-lived Kombi, but it won't be the VW Bulli. Originally known as the Type 2, the iconic Volkswagen van first debuted back in 1950. Matching its classic styling, Car and Driver points out that the Kombi replaced the original air-cooled engine with a liquid-cooled mill only within the last decade. | Posted: 24 Oct 2012 01:29 PM PDT  Official: Ford announces plan to close Belgian plant, restructure European manufacturing Filed under: Europe, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Plants/Manufacturing, Ford, Earnings/Financials The latest development in this ongoing saga that is the European economic crunch is word that Ford will shutter production of its Genk Assembly Plant in Belgium, eliminating some 4,300 positions. Ford could potentially reduce costs by $300 to $500 million annually as a resulting of closing the production facility. The Genk plant currently produces the Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy vehicles. Assembly of these vehicles would cease at the plant by the end of 2014. According to Ford, it lost $404 million in the European market. Its losses in Europe for the year have been estimated anywhere from $1 billion to 1.5 billion. Ford's European production capacity could be reduced by 15 to 20 percent by closing the plant, according to Morgan Stanley Research. And Itay Michaeli, an analyst at Citi Investment Research, explained that the closure of the Belgian plant won't improve Ford's profits. In fact, the costs associated with closing the plant could be close to $1 billion. But, According to Ford, it needs to restructure to combat slow sales in Europe. In a press release from the company, it is said that production of the Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy could move to Ford's Valencia, Spain facility. It is also said that production of the C-MAX and Grand C-MAX could move from Valencia to Saarlouis, Germany, in 2014. Ford says is will divulge further restructuring details tomorrow. El Audi R8 e-tron fue presentado hace 3 años y aún no está disponible a la venta. Este verano, el coche se hizo con el récord del Nürburgring para coches eléctricos de serie y Audi confirmó entonces que el e-tron estaría finalmente a la venta a principios de 2013. También enseñó el salpicadero definitivo repleto de pantallas, así como su retrovisor digital. El desarrollo del coche seguía como previsto cumpliendo con el calendario. Sin embargo, Car and Driver (la edición original) explica que el desarrollo del R8 e-tron se ha parado y que la fecha de lanzamiento se ha pospuesto. Al parecer hay varios temas con los que el nuevo director de investigación y desarrollo de la marca, Wolfgang Dürheimer (ex Porsche y Bentley) no está conforme, empezando por el precio de las baterías. Durante tiempo se dijo que el precio de las baterías irían bajando progresivamente, pero no lo han hecho lo suficiente para el gusto de Audi. Después, los de marketing no tienen claro que haya una clientela suficiente para un deportivo eléctrico. Y por supuesto, está el tema de la autonomía. En 2010, un R8 e-tron apenas pudo completar su tercera vuelta al circuito de las 24 Horas de Le Mans a ritmo de paseo en apertura de la carrera... Resumiendo, que se podría vender, a pérdidas, como coche imagen; mantenerlo en el catálogo por cuestiones de imagen, pero no será el caso por lo visto. The Japanese automaker may be by far the biggest seller of hybrids in the US, but it still wants to increase hybrid sales from its Lexus luxury badge. Lexus, whose hybrids account for about 10 percent of its US sales, is looking to move that number closer to its global average - about 20 percent - Automotive News reports, citing Lexus executive Kazuo Ohara. The path to increased hybrid sales might be paved with the introduction and updates of models such as the ES 300h sedan. As it is, through September, Lexus increased its US hybrid sales by 36 percent compared to 2011 numbers, to almost 26,000 vehicles. Lexus has priced the ES 300h hybrid with just a $2,750 price premium over the conventional version. Manganese Bronze Holdings Plc has been the company behind the Black Cab since 1984, but failing to invest in the product and increased competition have sent the icon into administration. Manganese has posted losses since 2008, sold a share of itself to Geely (yes, that Geely) in 2010, and had to post a 3.9 million pounds loss this summer due to an accounting error blamed on a new IT system. Unable to secure additional funding from Geely or any other investor, the company's been forced to enter the UK version of bankruptcy. Manganese is considered the last Coventry-based auto manufacturer. However, manufacturing was moved to China after the Geely deal and the parts are merely assembled in Coventry. That hasn't provided the expected savings, and when the new TX4 cab needed to be recalled earlier this year over a steering fault, the money crunch got tighter. On top of that, Manganese owners have been complaining about service for years, Mercedes has been swiping customers with a Black Cab Vito, Nissan is poised to swipe more with its NV200. Point being, it has a great deal of work to do in order to be a going concern again.
