Electric drive industry responds to A123's bankruptcy, takeover by JCI
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid Something interesting happened after A123 Systems filed for bankruptcy last week: the plug-in vehicle industry circled the wagons. AutoblogGreen received press releases and statements from a variety of electric vehicle (EV) players that, when taken as a whole, seem to indicate this particular bankruptcy filing hit a little close to home and when, say, Think exited stage right. The main message would make Douglas Adams proud: Don't panic. Fisker, for example, gets all of its batteries from A123. But Fisker's chief commercial officer, Richard Beattie, told The New York Times, "I'm not concerned about matters of supply."Forbes, unsurprisingly, took a negative view, but here's a sampling of the positive messages sent out after the news broke. Think Progress said the bankruptcy was a " a good opportunity for Obama to stand up and defend federal investments in clean energy."Brian Wynne, the president of the Electric Drive Transportation Association said that the way Johnson Control will take over A123 is a "positive development." He said, "Consolidation is an expected market force in all emerging industries, especially one as dynamic as the global electric drive market. ... The electric drive industry is still in the early stages of market development - this is the second year of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles availability on the mass market." Whatever happens, he said, "it is critical that the U.S. secure a position as the leader" in the EV industry. Plug In America's legislative director, Jay Friedland, said in a statement that the bankruptcy is part of "the natural business cycle" adding that, "our country is experiencing tremendous success as we electrify transportation." Plug In America (PIA) also pointed out the way A123 helped the overall industry, such as the way a battery with a 100-mile range cost $33,000 before A123 got a $6 million dollar grant in 2007. "Because of technology improvements and the high volume manufacturing capability we have today, the estimated cost is down to about $17,000 and is expected to drop to $10,000 by 2015," PIA said. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) pointed out that, "It should also be noted that while there have been some high-profile failures of Energy Department loan recipients like Solyndra, the program still has a more than 96 percent success rate." The UCS also wrote about the situation here. Atul Kapadia, the chairman and CEO of Envia Systems, the advanced battery technology company that is working with GM, used the occasion to promote his company's products, saying, "The drive to seek cost reduction in electric cars has accelerated since the advent of companies like A123. Carmakers want more than concept vehicles. They are now commercializing true mass-market electric cars. Envia's technology, available to select customers, more than triples the energy storage capacity of battery materials, causing a disruptive reduction in battery cost." Chevy refuses to pay bonuses to dealer with Bass Pro Shops-style showroom
Filed under: Car Buying, Marketing/Advertising, Chevrolet, GM Avid duck hunter Marc Heitz knows ducks would rather land on a pond already populated by ducks. Heitz is also a Chevy dealer, and when it came time to build a new facility, he figured car shoppers were a lot like ducks. "When people see other people on our lot, they're comfortable stopping," Heitz tells Automotive News. The best way to attract people to his lot, he theorized, was to give them reasons beyond cars and trucks. His Norman, OK showroom has a 45-foot waterfall, an aquarium stocked with local fish species and animal tracks on the floor lead to an arcade for the kids. Outside the log-cabin-like dealership are bear and elk statues, a picnic area and two dog parks. It feels more Bass Pro Shops than car dealer.General Motors agrees that it's certainly not your average Chevrolet dealership. And because the Heitz building doesn't have Chevy's signature blue cladding and gold bowtie, GM says it will not pay Heitz his $250,000 quarterly dealer-excellence incentive. A GM spokesman said the company will be glad to reinstate the payments if only Heitz will modify the building to be in compliance with the corporate branding plan, including removing the animal footprints. "It would be like putting socks on a rooster," Heitz tells AN. And it looks like Heitz is no fan of footware for fowl. He said he doesn't understand why GM wants to mess with something that's working (his dealership sold 1,900 vehicles in 2011), and he has no plans to change anything. Even if it costs him around $1 million a year. Video: ICON FJ-44 checks in to Jay Leno's Garage
Filed under: Aftermarket, Classics, Performance, SUV, Videos, Toyota, Celebrities, Off-RoadJay Leno is a big fan of ICON machinery. The comic and TV personality has already featured vehicles like the ICON Bronco and Derelict DeSoto on separate episodes, and now owner Jonathan Ward has stopped by the Big Dog Garage to show off the company's latest creation: The FJ-44. Unlike the company's other efforts, the FJ-44 isn't based on any historical model. Instead, ICON engineered the four-door aluminum bodywork and has it manufactured by a separate supplier. The company's workers powdercoat the body for a little extra durability and plop an LS-series General Motors V8 under the hood with up to 420 horsepower. If you want one, get ready to shell out $160,000 for the privilege. If we had the cash, we'd have one in the garage in a heartbeat. Leno seems impressed both by the craftsmanship and the vehicle's on-road manners, though the clip below doesn't venture off road. We imagine this creation would do just fine no matter where you pointed the nose. Check it out for yourself.Continue reading ICON FJ-44 checks in to Jay Leno's GarageICON FJ-44 checks in to Jay Leno's Garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 20:03:00 EST. Video: Nissan Altima V8? Only for Australia's touring car series
Filed under: Motorsports, Sedan, Videos, Nissan, Australia, Specialty, Racing By all accounts, the 2013 Nissan Altima is an excellent vehicle, but that doesn't mean it couldn't benefit from the addition of a heady V8 under the hood. Nissan Motorsport has cured that ail by constructing four Altima racers for the Australian V8 Supercars Championship, each with their own 32-valve VK56DE engine in the nose. The bruisers will start campaigning next season, and will mark the first entry in the series from any brand outside of Ford or Holden in nearly twenty years. Nissan has already produced the first of its race engines, and the team is currently working on whipping up another 14 examples for the next season. Nissan Motorsport is set to unveil the actual race cars next week, but until then, you can check out the video below. In it, the team shows off the progress that's been made so far, including cranking out body molds and building cage structures. Looks like fun.Continue reading Nissan Altima V8? Official: GM provides 2013 Chevy Volt with software updates after reports of shutdowns
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chevrolet, GM "Wow, this car really is quiet." While that could be the response of someone new to riding in the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug in hybrid, the fact is that Chevy parent General Motors is addressing an issue where the car's engine shuts down abruptly, a time when anyone would wish for a bit more noise. There's a glitch in the software of some 2013 model-year Volts that may cause the car to unexpectedly shut down in the middle of a drive, Hybrid Cars notes, based on items posted on the GM-Volt message board. While steering and brakes remain functional, the powertrain shuts down and may force some drivers to wait as long as five minutes to restart the car. As a result, GM is offering a free "service" at Chevy dealers that offers a free software upgrade and takes about an hour. GM isn't calling the situation a recall, and Hybrid Cars says no accidents have been reported as a result of the glitch. Still, it's a hiccup for a model whose sales have gained momentum recently. September marked the second straight month of record sales for the Volt, which sold 2,851 units, almost quadruple year-earlier figures. Check here for our Quick Spin of the 2013 Volt.GM provides 2013 Chevy Volt with software updates after reports of shutdowns originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 19:29:00 EST. Official: Bugatti brings Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse "Gris Rafale" to Brazil
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Bugatti, Misc. Auto Shows, South America Bugatti's Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is downright well-known around these parts. Not only have we reported on the 1,200-horsepower Veyron selling for a pretty penny at Pebble Beach, we've seen a funnyman Leno take one for a pleasure cruise in SoCal. Apparently, Bugatti believes that the Grand Sport Vitesse is likely to be just as popular in South America as it has been elsewhere in the world, as the company has officially announced that it will be bringing the model to Brazil. Not wanting to merely send out a press release, the French supercar maker has gone and created a one-off Grand Sport Vitesse "Gris Rafale" to mark the occasion. The new car has been finished in a fetching light shade of gray called Gris Rafale (French for "Gray Burst", with accent pieces done in striking blue carbon fiber. The interior treatment is a reversal of that motif, with blue leather and gray stitching. A special edition that only features a new colorway might seem like a weak effort for any other car, but on one of the most expensive, highest performance road-going vehicles of all time, we'll take it.
Gallery: Renault Fluence GT (Brasil) Share TweetRenault lleva a Sao Paulo el Fluence GT TCe 180 originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 18:00:00 EST. AltCar: AltCar: ZeroTruck a big electric vehicle with bigger dreams
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, Santa Monica Alt Car Expo Richard Serio, CEO of ZeroTruck recently told AutoblogGreen his all-electric work truck company is "on the cusp." That's because the California Energy Commission (CEC) program has approved a $2.2 million grant to get around a dozen vehicles into work fleets around the state. The grant pays for a portion of the truck and each participant in the program will get to keep the trucks after the two-year program is done. Each truck is being purpose-built, and Serio said that movie studios and catering companies would be ideal customers for the electric vehicles (EVs). The idea, Serio said, is to get data on how the trucks are charged and driven and then be able to show possible future buyers that there are companies that have been using the trucks for 24 months. ZeroTruck has been around for a while. After being unveiled at AFVI in 2008, the first one was delivered to the City of Santa Monica in 2009. The truck's technology continues to evolve, with ZeroTruck now working with two unnamed wireless charging companies to add that option to the powertrain package. Right now, you can order a Zerotruck with 30-, 60- or 90-kWh battery packs (which offer, roughly, 60, 80 or 110 miles, respectively). The prices range between $115,000 to $180,000. A comparable ICE truck costs between $65,000 and $85,000. Right now, ZeroTrucks come with a base, three-gear, electronically controlled transmission. ZeroTruck has received a $120,000 grant from the state of Pennsylvania and Ben Franklin Technology Partners to develop a continuous variable transmission (CVT) that should increase the efficiency of these big EVs. Serio said that low gear is useful to move the heavy trucks (with around a 14,500-pound gross vehicle weight) around a parking lot, but since the truck might then need to go 60 or 70 miles per hour on the highway for a few dozen miles, higher gears will pump up the miles per pack. It should take around two years to get the CVT ready, Serio said. AltCar: ZeroTruck a big electric vehicle with bigger dreams originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 16:56:00 EST. Official: Hyundai shows new HB20X softroader in Brazil, production starts next year
Filed under: Crossover, Hyundai, Misc. Auto Shows, South AmericaHyundai is launching a new line of cars exclusive to its Brazilian consumers called the HB (standing for "Hyundai Brasil"). After revealing the HB20 hatchback back in September, the new Hyundai HB20X made its official debut at the São Paulo Motor Show. This new Hyundai features a beefed-up exterior and more ground clearance, and it comes at the same time that Honda's similar Fit Twist was also unveiled. Looking like a jacked-up version of a US-spec Elantra GT, the HB20X has more of a soft-roader appearance than the base HB20 thanks to its taller ride height, tinted headlights and taillights, black plastic trim around the lower edge of the car and rear fascia, black decal on the side doors and the roof rack. The HB20X on display in São Paulo also gets a flashier interior with blue contrast stitching on steering wheel and seats, sport pedals and chrome accents, although Hyundai says some of these features "may change slightly" once the car leaves the show floor. Unfortunately, as many comparisons as we'd love to draw for this car to the Suzuki SX4 or Subaru XV Crosstrek, it does not appear that the HB20X is available with all-wheel drive. Power comes from Hyundai's 128-horsepower, 1.6-liter Gamma I4. A sedan version of the HB will also join the lineup when it goes on sale next year, and all HB models will be produced in Hyundai's new Brazilian assembly plant in Piracicaba. Scroll down to read about all the details in Hyundai's press release.
The latest innovation to come from the show that brought you this, and that is a product called Street Stamps. Building off of the previous popularity of underglow lights, Street Stamps project a customizable image on the ground from your vehicle. The image can be rendered in white, blue, red, green, yellow or a custom color at the owner's request. To install, all you need is to drill a 3/4-inch hole into your side view mirror or another strategic location. From there, you are all set to broadcast to the world your hatred for all things Bowtie or your disdain for import vehicles (popular options, according to the video). Similar implementations of this technology is found in the Ford Mustang and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, where the exterior courtesy lighting (sometimes called "puddle lamps") feature brand-specific designs. These OEM systems shut off when the vehicle is in motion - it's not readily apparent if Street Stamps do the same. If, in fact, the image can be projected while the vehicle is in motion, there would seem to be some obvious legal issues. Click below to check out the video. We'd hate to imagine one drilling into a side mirror on one of the pair of Lamborghini's in this vid, but what price can you put on personal expression, right? Obligatory warning for some foul language. Let us know what you think about this product in the comments below.Continue reading Street Smarts, customizable puddle lamps project your classStreet Smarts, customizable puddle lamps project your class originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 17:01:00 EST. Official: Ford shows updated 2013 Fiesta sedan in Brazil
Filed under: Sedan, Ford, Misc. Auto Shows Very few cars showing up at this year's São Paulo Motor Show have relevance to the US market, but the refreshed 2013 Ford Fiesta sedan certainly does. The Paris Motor Show has already given us a look at the global styling of the 2013 Fiesta hatchback, and now we get to see what changes are in store for the four-door version of the car. Although this updated global design is for the 2013 model year, these changes will wait until the 2014 model year for the US-spec Fiesta. As expected, the 2013 Fiesta gets a healthy dose of Ford's latest design language, the restyled car gets a very similar appearance to the 2013 Fusion starting with the narrowed headlights, powerdome hood and the Aston Martin-inspired grille. Ford also did some cosmetic work to the rear of the Fiesta sedan with reshaped taillights to go along with a new decklid and fascia design. There were no images released for the new sedan, but the 2013 hatchback received minor upgrades including a new gauge cluster, steering wheel and door panels. Ford also failed to provide any press release for the new Fiesta sedan we can only imagine that it would have similar upgrades of the hatchback we saw in Paris last month. Some of these highlights include the new EcoBoost three-cylinder engine and Active City Stop crash mitigation technology. We would expect to see both versions of the revised US-spec Fiesta to debut early next year.Ford shows updated 2013 Fiesta sedan in Brazil originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 16:33:00 EST. Official: 600-hp G-Power 1 Series is excessively cool
Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Performance, Europe, BMW, Specialty, Luxury Save some unforeseen circumstance we've yet to encounter, you'll never hear us turn down shoving extra horsepower at a vehicle. The minds at G-Power seem to understand that concept better than most and have just finished pumping a full 600 horsepower into the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. The team is calling their newest creation the G1 Hurricane RS, and the car makes use of a supercharged version of the same V8 that powers the BMW M3. Likewise, the tuner's engineers plucked the dual-clutch gearbox from the larger M for service in the G1 Hurricane. With 427 pound feet of torque on hand, the smallest of the G-Power line can bolt to 125 miles per hour in around 12.7 seconds on its way to a top end of 205 mph. The company threw in a set of carbon ceramic brakes to help bring the wicked 1 Series down from speed, which also helped reduce unsprung weight by half. Further weight reductions come in the form of a carbon fiber hood and trunk lid. G-Power plans to build just 30 examples of its wild little 1 Series M Coupe, so if you want one, you better get on the phone now. Head over to the G-Power site fore more information.600-hp G-Power 1 Series is excessively cool originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 16:02:00 EST. Official: Renault shows DCross Concept in Brazil
Filed under: Concept Cars, SUV, Misc. Auto Shows, Renault, South America, Off-Road The São Paulo Motor Show continues to heat up and bring us interesting new vehicle unveilings. Next year, we may have to tough it out and trek down to Brazil for the 28th edition of the auto show. The most recent development from São Paulo is the Renault DCross concept. In what appears to be a gussied-up Dacia Duster, the DCross gets a bright green and matte black paint scheme, a raised ride height, roof racks and a spare tire atop the concept. If off-roading is your thing, the DCross, at the very least, looks the part. Little else is given in details other than what we can gather from the photos. The concept, which catches the eye far more in the live shots than in the OEM image, was joined on the Renault stand by the Fluence GT, Clio 2013, and Captur concept. Will this concept predict the future for a Renault SUV/CUV? We're not sure, but its bullish looks seem ready for the Dakar Rally. The 2013 edition of Dakar is not until May of 2013, but the DCross already has us thinking of the grueling endurance race, held Peru, Chile and neighboring Argentina. Read up on Renault's debuts from Brazil in the press release below.Continue reading Renault shows DCross Concept in BrazilRenault shows DCross Concept in Brazil originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 15:32:00 EST.
