En la última generación se ha apostado por mejorar la calidad percibida, la seguridad y el equipamiento, si bien en diseño parece no gustar a todo el mundo (al menos no tanto como antes). En España el nuevo Outlander se tiene que conformar con un único motor diesel de 150 CV. Es interesante que Mitsubishi haya decidido venderlo tanto con tracción total como con la más sencilla 2WD, consiguiendo abaratar un poco el precio inicial. Lo más destacable de este SUV mediano es la completa dotación incluida en todas las versiones, dejando sólo ciertos elementos más "de capricho" para los acabados más completos. Folks at the UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering say they've figured out a way to make batteries lighter and faster-charging by creating algorithms that simulate the physical activity inside a typical lithium-ion battery. Usually, just the battery's current and voltage is tracked. UCSD, along with Bosch and battery maker Cobasys, received a grant worth almost $4 million from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) to study the process, and it looks like the university is making good use of the funds. The process is a complicated one. Professor Miroslav Krstic and UC President's Postdoctoral Fellow Scott Moura used an analogy of a ticket taker who can track how a movie audience is choosing its seats based on the speed of the line into the theater. Think of the moviegoers as patrons and the seats are the particles. There are more details in the press release below. We're not sure what that all means, exactly, but we do understand that the researchers say they may be able to reduce the cost of a battery by 25 percent and cut recharging times in half, which is pretty major considering that costs and charging times are two of the primary issues holding back broader adoption of electric vehicles.Continue reading The latest way to improve li-ion batteries? The race is a grueling four-day event that slithers through the Carpathian mountains of Romania. We aren't talking about battling some logging road, either. The competitors who tackle Romaniacs bolt up ridge sides, climb waterfalls and tear across open terrain in an attempt to set the best recorded time. A single stage can put the riders through 30,000 feet of climbing over incredibly varied terrain. This is a competition where no single skill set will nab you the title. Rather, riders need to be well-rounded to take all 400 miles head on. This year, Red Bull worked up a Signature Series on the event, following competitors through all four stages and documenting the carnage in beautiful HD. The 45-minute-long video is entirely TV quality, and while it requires a serious time commitment, it's also completely worth a slice of your day. Posted: 11 Oct 2012 05:31 PM PDT Spy Shots: 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series suffers fiery wreck while testing Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Performance, Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz has been running its new, and most certainly badass, SLS AMG Black Series around the Nürburgring of late, doing the sort of high-speed and handling tests that such supercars require to be perfectly super. Getting the bugs worked out is a good thing though, as these scary images caught by our spy photographers make clear. This particular SLS seems to have crashed and, quite literally, burned while doing some high-speed runs on the Ring. We're told that the car was carrying both a driver and a passenger, and that both walked away from the wrecked exotic before the fire even started. Good on both counts, then. As we've reported previously, expectations are that this beastly Black Series will produce horsepower figures north of 600, while also shedding weight and gaining strengthened internals. The fire-damaged hulk seen here would seem to indicate that this latest SLS will make use of the standard car's aluminum superstructure, rather than the carbon fiber used for the SLS AMG Electric Drive, however. The luxury SUV is set to ride on the new GMT900 truck platform will underpin next-generation General Motors workhorses like the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. While the machines in these photos are heavily camouflaged, we can see the truck will bow with front fascia akin to what we've seen from both the Cadillac XTS and ATS, albeit on a much larger scale. LED accent lighting stretches from each headlamp all the way down to the lower bumper, and a massive, tight-mesh grille looks to be part of the package as well. Posted: 11 Oct 2012 04:27 PM PDT Report: The importance of luxury SUV and crossover sales explained Filed under: Car Buying, SUV, Crossover, Earnings/Financials, Luxury When we see a vehicle like a Lamborghini Urus or the Bentley EXP 9 F concept, we may at first scratch our heads, wondering why an automaker would take this route. When the accountants see these vehicles, they see one thing: dollar signs. No matter what angle you come at it from, SUVs and crossovers are cash cows for carmakers, especially luxury brands. It's a truth that Kicking Tires laid bare in a recent article. One shining example given highlights this phenomenon by way of recent sales figures by Infiniti. September deliveries of the JX fullsize crossover shown above represented 24 percent of Infiniti's sales. In fact, Infiniti's four crossovers (FX, QX, and don't forget the EX) accounted for 39 percent of the Japanese luxury brand's sales. 10 years ago, the brand sold only one SUV, the QX4. In a four-model lineup, the gussied-up Nissan Pathfinder SUV accounted for a fifth of its sales in 2002. Fast-forward to the present, and Infiniti "truck" sales in 2012 were up 63.3 percent, while car sales were up just 2.5 percent. The article goes on to point out similar trends based on the proliferation of the X3 and X1 in BMW's lineup, Acura's crossovers making up half of its sales in September and how the Cayenne outsold the rest of the Porsche lineup combined. There are a lot more sales facts and figures if you read through to the article, but the gist of it is: luxury SUVs and crossovers sell big, and they can float a brand's sales when other vehicles are not moving off the lot. That crash marked Earnhardt's second concussion of the season; the first happened after a failed tire test in Kansas on August 29. Earnhardt, who currently holds the 11th spot in NASCAR's Chase for the Cup, admits that he didn't report symptoms suffered after the first incident for fear that he would be removed from the championship hunt. Said Earnhardt, "I remember everything about that accident, everything after that accident. But I knew I didn't feel ... you know your body and how your mind works. I knew something was just not quite right. I decided to push through and work through it." The driver said he was feeling "100 percent" before the race at Talladega. The two-race setback, which will almost certainly eliminate him from championship contention, comes as a real blow to Earnhardt, who was having a bit of a comeback season. The driver broke a considerable 143-race winless streak this season. Land Rover, whose Jaguar affiliate has already produced a PHEV prototype that gets an estimated 73.5 miles per gallon equivalent, is eying the Range Rover as a possible production PHEV because the model's buyers would likely be able to afford the cost of the new technology. Richings said the model would debut sometime between 2015 and 2020. Land Rover confirmed at its 2013 model unveiling in September that it would get a hybrid variant that would pair a 3.0-liter diesel V6 with an electric motor. That model, which won't be available in the U.S., will have 333 horsepower and 45 miles per gallon (on the more lenient European driving cycle). Land Rover said in April that it may also get an extended-range plug-in variant as early as 2014. Bajo la denominación 6B, promete una calidad de realización hasta ahora no vista en ningún producto de la firma y un diseño más elaborado y atractivo, eso sí, con ciertos parecidos con algunos Toyota. El 6B será el producto más caro de BYD. Contará con importantes novedades tecnológicas y de equipamiento como son el sistema de aparcamiento remoto y el control por voz para la mayor parte de las funciones. También tendrá control de estabilidad, hasta 10 airbags y faros de xenón. Los motores por ahora no se han confirmado, pero imaginamos que en la oferta no faltará el nuevo 1.5i Turbo de 154 CV asociado a una caja manual o secuencial de doble embrague, siempre con seis velocidades. Carroll Shelby spent plenty of time decking the halls of Chrysler with quick versions of otherwise plebeian models, including the Dodge Dakota and Lancer. Most of those machines have returned to the earth in spectacular fashion by now, but it looks as if one owner in Pennsville, New Jersey sealed two of the machines away from the world to preserve them for future generations. Behold what could very well be the cleanest and most original 1987 Shelby Lancer and 1989 Shelby Dakota on the face of the planet. According to their eBay Motors listings, these machines have never been registered, and both still retain their original dealer markings, right down to the protective plastic on the seats and steering wheels. The owner even has the original batteries for both vehicles. What's more, both are #6 in their respective production lines, making them the first civilian models sold. The Lancer has but 22 miles on its odometer, and the Dakota 23. Right now, both relics have Buy It Now prices of $29,000, but the Shelby Dakota is the only one of the pair with a bid. Of course, the real tragedy here is that the owner has effectively relegated these vehicles to museum duty. Depending on how they've been maintained, the damage done by sitting for years on end could require serious effort and dollars to erase. The electric vehicle advocate group used a $50,000 grant from the State of Hawaii to produce a 48-page guidebook (PDF) designed to help novices adopt their first electric vehicle. The document - downloadable for free from Plug In America's website - covers issues such as charging costs and installation expenses. It also discusses ways to install a charger in places like a single-family home or multi-unit dwelling and other factors to consider. Along with California, Hawaii's been a leading U.S. state when it comes to alt-fuel vehicle adoption (rightly so) because of the combination of relatively high gas prices and short driving distances that take the edge off of range anxiety. In fact, for those keeping track, the U.S. Department of Energy says Hawaii has 260 EV charging stations, or about one for every 1,700 vehicles there. Posted: 11 Oct 2012 01:41 PM PDT Study: White remains world's most popular car paint color, copper and bronze rising Filed under: Design/Style When it came to paint colors on new cars, for ten years, silver was the one hue to rule them all, not just extending its lead through 2009 and 2010 but doing so in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The revolution came in 2011, when white took over as the top color in the States and black claimed the number one spot in Europe, silver maintaining its hold in the Orient. The annual study by the paint experts at PPG Industries notes how the the colorless hue has made more gains this year, white cars being the number one choice here and in Europe and tied for first place with silver cars in Asia. Black took second place in every market. Here, silver and gray grabbed third place, while our European cousins displayed their taste for 50 shades of metallic: gray took third place on its own, silver in fourth, four points behind. In Asia, "natural," which includes browns, tans, golds, oranges and yellows, was the pigment of choice after white and black. Further back in the pack, mineral and alloy shades like gold, copper and bronze are getting more buyers, and based on some of the colors being previewed for 2015 and 2016 it looks like our automotive future has more than a chance of sparkle.
