Sure, the well-used saying 'rubbing is racing' applies here from time to time, but that's the exception, not the rule. And even in that case, it's the bikes making contact, not the riders. All of that makes the video below all the more worth watching. Here's the scene: Tyler O'Hara is in second place behind Michael Barnes, both pilots mounted on Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles, on the last corner of the last lap. The race couldn't be closer... until, that is, O'Hara decides to reach out and touch Barnes in an effort to complete the pass. It worked. O'Hara slowed Barnes down just enough that he was able to push past and take the win. At least for a little while. The American Motorcyclists Association retroactively gave the victory to Barnes, punishing O'Hara all the way into last place. Filed under: Emerging Technologies, MPG, Honda, Natural GasHonda just released an incentive, a big one, for those interested in buying the Civic Natural Gas. American Honda has an alliance with Clean Energy Fuels to provide a debit card pre-loaded with $3,000 that can used at Clean Energy fueling stations around the country. Another perk, for those living in California, is the ability to drive a 2012 Civic Natural Gas Vehicle in the High Occupancy Vehicle carpool lanes through January 1, 2015. Honda says that the natural gas vehicle offers fuel savings up to 40 percent compared to a typical gasoline-powered subcompact car with its 31 miles per gallon combined EPA rating. Natural gas was costing customers $2.05 per equivalent gasoline gallon in July, according to the most recent Deptartment of Energy data. While not covered in its press release (see below), there are other considerations that car shoppers should research, such as: Finding a natural gas station: Clean Energy doesn't state the specific number of public fueling stations that there are in the US, but the numbers are limited. A lot of these stations are behind locked gates at government and business fleet facilities, airports, and bus and utility vehicle gas pumps. Looking over Clean Energy's map, it looks like there are about 180 public natural gas stations, about forty percent of them in Southern California. Range limitations: The regular Honda Civic sedan has a gas tank that can hold up to 13.2 gallons and has a combined city/highway mileage rating of 32 miles per gallon for the automatic transmission version. That would mean it could travel 422 miles on a tank of gasoline. Honda gives the Civic Natural Gas a range estimate of 220 miles. Part of the reason for this conservative estimate is that different stations refill CNG differently, and ambient temperature has an effect on how much gas can make it into the tank. There's also a limit to how much natural gas the pressurized tank can hold. Price comparison: Natural gas is appealing for those interested in reducing their out-of-pocket fuel expense, with a $2.05 per equivalent gasoline gallon the number cited by Honda, compared to the current national average for gasoline at about $3.80 a gallon. The downside is that the Civic Natural Gas is the most expensive version of the Civic, with its sticker price starting at $27,065 after destination. So, the $3,000 fuel card is appealing, but it makes sense to look before you leap. In this case it's Auto Express with the query "What happens when you compare the 2013 Porsche 911 and a Morgan Plus 8 around the UK's tight, technical Anglesey track?" To give you the context, the Porsche is the definitively modern yet rear-engined coupe with 350 horsepower getting kicked out of its 3.4-liter, six-cylinder flat six to move 3,080 pounds. The Morgan is the definitively retro, front-engined roadster with with 370 hp at its disposal from a BMW-sourced V8 motivating just 2,420 pounds. The answer is more engaging than you might expect. In the UK, they both go for about the same price, £80,000 ($128,000 U.S.), and even though the 'winner' is no surprise, the feelings each car creates couldn't be more different. And the Morgan does earn an accolade that hasn't been heard about a 911 in more than two decades: "It's a proper manly car." Ever since the financial crisis, the biannual auto show has been enduring a downturn. Though 2011's attendance of 842,600 visitors was an improvement of 37 percent over 2009, the overall trend is downward from 1.43 million visitors in 2007. The height of attendance for the show was in 1991 when the 15-day exhibition ushered in 2.02 million patrons. The show later shrunk to 13 days, then to ten, in response to shrinking demand. So what's an auto show to do? According to an Automotive News report, the answer is to remake itself. The theme for Tokyo Motor Show 2013 has been announced as, "Compete! And Shape a new future." According to the press release provided, "The theme represents the desire to have visitors experience a future that doesn't yet exist anywhere and is shaped by vying values, such as beauty, technology, and dreams." Part of that effort is the Smart Mobility City project, displaying high-tech methods of how cars can connect to one another. Japanese carmakers are looking to be the leader in the interconnectedness of cars in the future. Features like smart electric grids and interactive infotainment systems are among these technologies. According to the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers (JAMA), "Passions that thrive on cars, motorcycles, and their technologies, are brought together in a friendly competition to shape the future." Perhaps this direction is the one the Tokyo show must take in order to regain relevancy, in the midst of shows like Shanghai and Beijing increasing in popularity. The Tokyo expo has been struggling for relevance not just with show patrons, but also with foreign automakers, who have been increasingly unwilling to debut concepts and new models - or even buy displace space at all - in a market where consumers don't buy many foreign-branded autos. In an era of budgetary pressures (such as now), incentives can become easy targets. The United Kingdom is scrutinizing its electric vehicle incentives. Similar debates are taking place in the US and France. California, for example, cut its EV rebates in half recently to deal with budget and economic constraints. According to a parliamentary report, the £11 million spent on a government program to encourage the use of plug-in EVs benefited only a "handful" of consumers, many of them affluent families who used the government grants to help fund second cars. The House of Commons Transport Committee is questioning whether that was a good use of public funds. The UK's Department of Transport offers grants up to £5,000 (approximately $8,065 US at current exchange rates) for the purchase of an electric car as part of its emissions reduction strategy. The program has also funded a network of more than 1,600 public charging points across the country. The government was expecting to see tens of thousands of EVs on British roads by 2015, and independent forecasts think it could hit six figures by 2020. So far, the numbers haven't been good - 1,052 eligible cars were registered last year, up from 111 in 2010. As for charging stations, only 500 of the 1,600 units have been installed so far, which could be another barrier for adoption. Government EV incentives have been in place in major markets around the world, including China, India and Japan. There has yet to be a country celebrating victory on this front, but it's still early in the game. Experts say that it's going to take sticker price reduction, charging station ubiquity, driving experience and more "keeping up with the Joneses" social influence to succeed. Cada año el fabricante de pintura PPG Industries publica su estudio sobre las tendencias. Este año, el blanco se impuso en Estados Unidos y en Europa, mientras que empató con el plata en Asia. Los siguientes puestos los ocupan o bien el negro o bien el plata. Finally seeing the real car will be good news whenever it happens, but even better news is that Inside Line has just reported that the F70 will be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in January. We have no idea what the gigundously powerful coupe will look like - the rendering above is the work of KGP Photography, whose spy shooters have shot quite a number of prototypes hidden under enormous amounts of camo. We do know it will have a carbon fiber chassis with a Formula One-style build developed by one of the key players in the F1 team - the chassis will be 20-percent lighter than the Enzo's, yet stiffer. Within it will be something like 900 horsepower unleashed from a mid-mounted V12 assisted by an evolution of the energy-regenerating HY-KERS unit. Weight for the whole car has been rumored to come in a snort-inducing 2,500 pounds. | Posted: 12 Oct 2012 02:08 PM PDT  Confirmed: Volvo takes final orders for C30, production ends this December Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Hatchback, Volvo According to an Autoblog reader with access to Volvo's internal dealer site, the Swedish automaker has officially notified its dealers that North American production of the C30 will cease in December. It's not exactly a surprise - the C30 disappeared from Volvo's Swedish website months ago and C30 forum users have been discussing the end of the hatch in various markets all summer. This only makes it official that Volvo is pulling the plug on a car that only sold about 4,500 units per year for the six years it was here. The bulletin notes that while the "C30 successfully achieved its goal to attract new customers to the Volvo brand, pulling a high percentage of customers from brands like Mini, Mazda and Volkswagen," its end is necessitated by the need to develop "high volume products to better sustain our brand health and network viability moving forward," presumably in the U.S. market. Autoblog reached out to Volvo for comment, and they confirmed the news, remarking "...we have made the decision to discontinue C30 production to better position Volvo for the future and the next stages of our model portfolio." (Their full statement is available by scrolling below). We've been hearing about this transition for years, but frankly, we still don't know what those products might be. The effacing of the C30 leaves the S60, S80, XC60, XC70 and XC90 in the U.S. lineup - the C70 convertible is expected to bow out early next year. From everything we've heard out of Volvo, we're not getting the excellent new V40 or V40 Cross Country, but there have also been rumors of a C90 and an S100 luxury flagship that aren't anything like high volume. We've also heard that company CEO Stefan Jacoby is contemplating a Mini rival, but isn't that what the C30 was supposed to have been? Perhaps the C30's biggest problem is what it costs to get in one. According to the company's consumer website, there are only two models offered, the base T5 starting at $25,500 and the R-Design at $27,850. The C30s were well equipped, but the Mini Cooper starts at $20,400. For those volume buyers fixated on the bottom line, that stat led to some open minds slamming shut on the C30. The little hatch also could have used a lot more advertising. While we wait for something to take a spot under the S60, the dealer bulletin suggests that the C30 Polestar Limited Edition promised for the U.S. will figure into dealers' final allocations. We think. The campaign's minute-long video, available below, shows a few folks in various stages of ecstasy plugging in their phones, after which a voice repeats the tagline "Fun to Charge." The game, called "Plug-In Championship," is supposed to "bring to life" the fun of recharging a Prius PHEV. Green Car Reports explains that gamers can score points, share their experiences with social-network friends and maybe buy more Prius PHEVs, though that website is as confused about the whole thing as we are. Por eso, nos sorprende un poco e intriga ver este prototipo rodar por el Nürburgring. Con un aspecto a medio camino entre el R8 GT de calle y el GT3 de competición, no queda claro de que clase de coche estamos hablando. Lo más probable, pero nos podemos equivocar, es que se trate de una serie especial, como un versión de calle del GT3. Y es que los apéndices aerodinámicos del coche (alerón, y extractor de aire en el capó delantero) son típicos del GT3, aunque aquí sean mucho más pequeños que en el de competición, mientras que el resto de la carrocería es del R8 GT. Por supuesto también podría ser una mula para cualquier otra cosa, como un nuevo motor o cualquier componente mecánico (caja de cambios, suspensiones, etc). También podría la mula del sustituto del R8. De todos modos, no me canso de ver el R8 en el Nürburgring y cómo el coche se comprime en el Karussel. Following up on the existing Atom 3 model, both the numeration and the spec sheet call this out as an upgrade, rather than a totally new model from the British builder. Cosmetic changes may be hard to spot for the casual observer (and the fact that Ariel doesn't have much quality photography available doesn't help, either). The 3.5 has new a new lighting system front and rear, with twin projector headlamps and LED turn signals and taillights. The car's front "hood" has been revised, as well. Mechanically the Atom 3.5 boasts chassis tweaks that are products of the development of the hardcore Atom V8 and Mugen models, which allow this new Ariel to be stiffer, with more torsional rigidity than ever. Revised engine mounts and dampers propose a more livable Atom ride quality, too. Power for the 3.5 still comes from a Honda 2.0-liter four-cylinder, in both naturally aspirated and supercharged flavors. The NA motor stays steady with an output of 245 horsepower while the supercharged motor gets bumped up to 315 hp. Follow on below for the Ariel Motor Co. press release. Please note: we've got a couple calls in to Ariel, hoping for more in the way of photography of the Atom 3.5, too - we'll be sure to update this post if we get a response. We've also placed a call to Virginia-based TMI Autotech, which is licensed to manufacturer and sell the Atom in our market, to see if North American customers will be able to take advantage of the 3.5's developments as well. Chrysler se ha preparado para el SEMA Show a consciencia con un stand de 1.420 m2 y hasta 24 modelos preparados en exhibición. En Autoblog, tuvimos la oportunidad de ver algunas de esas creaciones, como el Fiat Chrysler 500C de la foto principal. Los diseñadores se inspiraron descaradamente en la escena hot-rod para esta creación. Desde las llantas rojas de chapa con embellecedor cromado hasta la pintura negro mate pasando por los detalles que marcan la diferencia (spoiler y retrovisores en metal o las tomas de aire del capó -"louvers", para los entendido en hot-rods-), todo está hecho con gusto y atención por el detalle. Por supuesto, qué sería de stand de MOPAR en un SEMA Show sin un modelo desbordante de potencia. El Dodge Charger será una de las estrellas del stand en ese papel...bajo su capó se esconde el V10 del Viper y sus 650 CV. Filed under: Performance, Videos, UK, Humor, Specialty Everyone has to have a niche, we suppose. That would explain Colin Furze. The UK man claims a Guinness World Record for largest bonfire (2006), longest motorcycle (2008) and fastest mobility scooter (2010). So it seems that Furze is set on knocking off obscure world records, and his latest attempt might be the most creative yet. Furze has built a muscled-up and modified pram (Yankee translation: baby stroller) that reaches speeds previously unfathomable in the world of infant transportation. The stroller has a 10-horsepower motor and four gears, and it looks mighty fast. It is all in the name of setting a new world record for, you guessed it, the fastest stroller. Thankfully, the YouTube video's description provides a safety disclaimer, "Just for the nob heads no i haven't put a real kid in at speed and no its not road legal hence why i had to film this on private road." If only corporate disclaimers could be so eloquent. This Sunday, Furze will make his world record attempt at Avon Park Dragstrip in the UK. The record is 30 mph. From the video below, it's apparent that the previous record should be soundly dispatched. The real question is, will Furze hit the promised 50 mph? We'll just have to wait to find out. Ya te contamos hace meses que Lola Cars, el fabricante de coches de carreras más conocido entre los equipos privados de Le Mans, se había declarado en quiebra ante sus problemas económicos. Se esperaba que apareciera uno o varios inversores capaces de inyectar dinero a una compañía que lleva 45 años tomando parte en la práctica totalidad de carreras de sport-turismo que han existido en ese periodo. Pero la realidad es que esta semana el administrador concursal se ha pronunciado, y ha afirmado que no hay ningún interesado en adquirir la compañía, y hacer frente a sus deudas, por lo que lo más seguro es que se cierre la compañía y se liquiden sus vienes para hacer frente a parte de las deudas. Este movimiento no afecta a otras ramas de Lola como compañía, pero sí que podemos dar por finalizada, salvo sorpresa mayor, la participación de Lola en Le Mans o el WEC. Una auténtica pena. In this case, the first US EcoCentre, which specializes in selling neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) made by China-based Liuzhou Wuling Special Purpose Vehicle Manufacturing Co., has opened for business, Plug In Cars reports. The EcoCentre, which is operated by Lincoln and Jaguar dealer Ramon Alvarez, is in Irvine, CA, near Los Angeles, and also sells Coda Automotive electric vehicles. The NEVs, which have a top speed of 25 miles per hour and a single-charge range of up to 40 miles, range in price from $9,995 for the EcoE mini car to $17,995 for the EcoVan. Alvarez first announced his intention to sell the EVs in July at the National Association of Minority Auto Dealers conference in Las Vegas. The cars might be small, but his hopes are big. General Motors los publicará el 31 de octubre, o lo que es lo mismo, el último día en el que Opel puede retrasar el pago de una mejora salarial del 4,3% a sus empleados en Alemania. IG Metall expresó en una carta a los 20.800 empleados de Opel en Alemania su deseo de que Opel abandonase los despidos previstos hasta 2016 "y más allá". Opel, que en repetidas ocasiones reafirmó su deseo de llegar a un acuerdo lo antes posible con el sindicato, está actualmente en plena negociación con IG Metall y otros actores sociales. | Posted: 12 Oct 2012 11:17 AM PDT  Official: Mini exiting WRC after just one year Filed under: Motorsports, Crossover, Mini, Racing There was a fair bit of hullabaloo two years ago when Mini announced a return to the World Rally Championship for this season, but the road to making that happen has been as rocky as a gravel stage. It spent 2011 developing its JCW Countryman WRC challenger, changing its mind about how it wanted to work with Prodrive, dumped a driver due to budget issues, then registering its entry after the deadline had passed in a ploy that might or might not have been a protest aimed at the WRC promoter. Mini had stated that it wanted to win the whole championship in 2013, and spent 2011 doing six WRC rounds as development. As it stands for this year, the WRC Team Mini Portugal - paid for by Mini, run by ProDrive - scored 26 points in the first rally at Monte Carlo and has so far blanked the rest of the season. The relationship between Mini and ProDrive appeared to be an ever-contentious affair, at the end of this season, even the money will dry up along with what support there was. Because it contested every race in the calendar, though, Mini says it has completed the FIA requirements for homologation of the JCW Countryman WRC; meaning that privateers can continue purchasing the car and run it in the WRC. BMW Motorsport is continuing development and parts supply of the 1.6-liter turbo engine, and a report in Autosport indicates that ProDrive will continue to run Minis in the series next year. | Posted: 12 Oct 2012 10:19 AM PDT  SEMA: Chrysler previews SEMA showcars Filed under: Aftermarket, SEMA Show, Performance, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Specialty, Design/Style, FiatChrysler is taking on the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas in a big way, with a sprawling 15,300 square-foot display encompassing a total of 24 modified vehicles. We got a chance to preview some of those creations, including the plucky little Fiat 500C you see above. Designers decided to take a page from the West Coast custom scene with unique widebody fender flares. The 500 Beach Cruiser sits a full foot wider front and rear thanks in part to a set of prototype aluminum wheels. We dig on the louvers and the wooden surfboard rack, too (though with the canvas lid slid back, we're guessing it'd make for some interesting tan lines). Of course, it wouldn't be a Mopar booth without at least one outrageous engine swap. The Dodge Charger Juiced fills that role this year with a Viper V10 crate engine worth a full 650 horsepower. Other stars include the Chrysler 300 Luxury, with its unique True Blue Pearl paint and Katzkin leather interior, as well as the 392-powered Urban Ram and carbon-fiber laden Dodge Dart Carbon Fire (which appears to be nearly identical to the car we showed you in spy shots last week).
