Nissan's Andy Palmer discusses Leaf battery degradation crisis [w/video]
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, VideosChelsea Sexton, founder of the Lightning Rod Foundation, a co-founder of Plug In America, and star of Who Killed the Electric Car, recently sat down with Andy Palmer, executive vice president of Nissan, to discuss the Nissan Leaf and its battery degradation crisis in Arizona. You can watch the 16-minute video below, but here's the gist. The interview starts with Sexton asking about the standards used to determine the degradation of the battery. Palmer said Nissan's assumptions during the design process were that the battery pack needed to have 80 percent capacity left after five years of normal usage, and after 10 years, it would be 70 percent. Some Leafs would be doing better and some worse than that, based on driving conditions over the years. Nissan figured there were four main variables that would affect those assumptions: Speed and type of driving you do - if you're always going at highway speeds, there will be more degradation. Frequent use of fast charging - Nissan recommends no more than once per day. Mileage on the vehicle - with 12,500 per year being the assumed average in Nissan's testing. What the temperature extremes are - both cold and hot. As for the Phoenix situation, Palmer said that Nissan has collected data from 400 Leafs sold in Arizona. On average, Arizona drivers are doing about 7,500 miles per year. Given the other factors in play in Arizona, Palmer said that if we project the average Leaf battery life after five years there, it will be at 76 percent state of health, when the average should be 80. And this is driving an average of 5,000 fewer miles per year.Continue reading Nissan's Andy Palmer discusses Leaf battery degradation crisis [w/video]Nissan's Andy Palmer discusses Leaf battery degradation crisis [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 20:02:00 EST. Video: Leno drives James Bond's 1966 Toyota 2000GT Convertible
Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Japan, Videos, Celebrities, TV/Movies If anyone can get their hands on rare and one-of-a-kind cars, it's Jay Leno, but some cars even elude the well-funded clutches of the funnyman-turned car collector. In this episode of Jay Leno's Garage, Jay meets a car that he thought he would never get a chance to drive; the Toyota 2000GT. And yes, we're extremely jealous. This is the latest stop in Jay's trip to Japan, where he has already played with the Datsun 240Z and Lexus LFA, but this has to be the crescendo of his trek. Venturing to Toyota's own museum, Leno is rewarded by something even more rare than your average 2000GT. The car in question is one of only two convertible 2000GT's ever built. They were specially commissioned for use in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice. Due to its rarity, Leno was only allowed to drive it in what appears to be the museum parking lot. Still, that is more seat time with a 2000GT than most others will ever get to spend. Click below to watch Jay's test drive of what is arguably one of the most collectible Japanese cars ever made, as well as its use on the silver screen.Continue reading Leno drives James Bond's 1966 Toyota 2000GT ConvertibleLeno drives James Bond's 1966 Toyota 2000GT Convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 19:59:00 EST. Spy Shots: Rolls-Royce Corniche Coupe does some performance testing at Nürburgring
Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Performance, Rolls-Royce, Luxury While all the gory details surrounding the new Rolls-Royce coupe - including its true name, "Corniche" is just a savory-sounding best guess right now - are still shrouded in mystery, this new set of clandestinely foraged images proves that the car probably won't be a slouch in terms of performance. The Ghost-based Roller was spotted on the Nürburgring Nordschleife recently, demonstrating its sporting chops at the same time it was showing off it's impressive patrician nose. Expectations are that, when the new coupe is shown off for real at the Geneva Motor Show in March of next year, that nose will belong to the fastest production car to ever wear the Spirit of Ecstasy. Indications are that the Corniche will be rocking a turbocharged V12, making in the ballpark of 600 horsepower, and using an eight-speed transmission.Rolls-Royce Corniche Coupe does some performance testing at Nürburgring originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 19:30:00 EST. Video: Watch how Audi 'evolved' the R8 for 2013
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Audi Since the Audi R8 launched back in 2009, Audi has done a great job of keeping its mid-engine supercar fresh. Between the V10, the Spyder and the GT models, it seems like there has been something new added to the R8 every year. The 2013 model year is going to bring more of the same. More than just an updated look, though, Audi engineers made sure to fine tune the R8's performance, and Audi has released a video showing exactly what goes into making improvements to a car like the R8. We've already seen some of the making of Audi's video from the opposite side of the lens, and now we finally get to see what the new R8 looks like from Audi's point of view testing on the Nürburgring along with the Autobahn. There are some great shots of a camouflaged 2013 R8 blasting around the 'Ring as well as some of the car's build process including a look at the lightweight Audi Space Frame and watching builders drop the engine and transmission into the car's rear. One of the more interesting elements of the video is hearing just how important the Nürburgring is to Audi. In the video, Stephan Reil, Quattro GmbH head of development, says that every Audi RS and R8 model must run an 8,000-kilometer (almost 5,000 miles) durability test around the Nordschleife and that in testing, Audi engineers equate one km on the 'Ring to 15 to 18 km on standard roads. While we would love to hear more of the R8's exhaust note in the video below, it's still fun to watch and gives great insight about what went into updating this car.Continue reading Watch how Audi 'evolved' the R8 for 2013Watch how Audi 'evolved' the R8 for 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 19:00:00 EST. Official: 2013 Nissan Pathfinder headed to dealers with $28,270* starting price
Filed under: Car Buying, Crossover, Nissan The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder will be arriving in showrooms by the end of this month, and the good news for potential buyers is that the new model will have a lower price than the vehicle it replaces. Nissan has priced the 2013 Pathfinder at $28,270 - $1,020 less than the 2012 model - which does not include the destination charge (*) that tacks on an extra $825 to the bottom line. For this base price, buyers get the Pathfinder S, and from there, Nissan has shaken up the trim levels a little for the new body style. The SV is still the next step up (and usually represents the volume model for Nissan) starting at $32,640, marking a $1,110 price drop from 2012. The SL and Platinum trim levels are new for 2013, and these models start at $34,470 and $39,170, respectively. Nissan has yet to announce the specific content that comes with each trim level, but all versions of the new Pathfinder are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 routed to the front wheels through Nissan's latest Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT); four-wheel drive is available across the lineup as a $1,600 option. Speaking of options, Nissan announced a few of the options for the new Pathfinder, but it has yet to release what each option adds. Some of the standout options include the $2,650 SL Premium Package on the SL models only, the $1,850 dual DVD entertainment system for all but the base model and the $2,300 Platinum Premium Package which likely adds every imaginable option into what should be an already decked-out Pathfinder Platinum. More trim level and option details should be available closer to the launch of the 2013 Pathfinder, but until then, check out the press release below.Continue reading 2013 Nissan Pathfinder headed to dealers with $28,270* starting price2013 Nissan Pathfinder headed to dealers with $28,270* starting price originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 17:59:00 EST. It'll be a challenge to reach 54.5 MPG as Americans get heavier
Filed under: Green Culture, MPG, USA Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in recent decades in the US, and with our bulging bellies has come an increase in serious health issues like diabetes and heart disease. Add to that excess gasoline consumption and additional risks in accidents, and the fat forecast gets even more depressing. Starting with the statistic that Americans' weight gain is burning more than one billion gallons of excess fuel each year, Allstate and Cars.com have created an infographic explaining the complex struggle between fuel efficiency and passenger weight (check it out below). The short version: as automakers explore their options to meet ambitious federal corporate average fuel economy standards of 54.5 mpg by 2025, obese passengers make the efforts more complex. The infographic, called "The Seesaw Battle of Fuel Efficiency," looks at what automakers are doing to meet the 54.5 mpg mandate during a time when more than one third of American adults are obese. For the automakers, cutting down weight is important because every 100 extra pounds can cut fuel efficiency by up to two percent. To improve efficiency, automakers are reducing vehicle weight by using more lightweight, high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum. They are also changing accessories inside the car, such as using MP3 players instead of CD players, flash drives instead of owner's manuals and air pumps instead of spare tires. To paraphrase Jay Leno, take out all you want, we'll eat more.Continue reading It'll be a challenge to reach 54.5 MPG as Americans get heavierIt'll be a challenge to reach 54.5 MPG as Americans get heavier originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 17:57:00 EST. Rumormill: Lamborghini planning four-seat Aventador concept for Geneva?
Filed under: Concept Cars, Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini, Rumormill, Luxury For Geneva, Lamborghini is rumored to be expanding the seating capacity of its Aventador supercar. UK magazine Car reports the Italian supercar builder is working on a four-seat Aventador GT concept to display next to its Roadster sibling. The publican says the family-friendlier coupe will get an extended wheelbase, two small rear jump seats not unlike the Porsche 911 and possibly rear "suicide panel" doors. Their story goes on to say the possibility of the four-seat Aventador is unclear, but would be decided based on marketability, not feasibility. Previous reports have indicated that Lamborghini is still working on its Estoque four-door concept despite it not having a green light for production. As for the long-rumored Aventador Roadster, Car says we should expect a retracting hardtop-style roof instead of the Erector-set-inspired cloth top on the Murciélago - that news would appear to conflict with earlier reports of a removable roof panel.Lamborghini planning four-seat Aventador concept for Geneva? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 17:30:00 EST. Spy Shots: Lexus LFA Special Edition AD-X spied
Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Performance, Lexus, RacingLexus and its LFA may be still fairly young in the supercar world, but that doesn't mean the model has lacked for variants in its scant two-year existence. Last year we were given the Nürburgring Edition to chew on, and we've seen, periodically, some other very limited-edition models out and about. The car that you see here - noted on the bodywork as "AD-X" - is another branch on the old family tree, then. Our sources indicate that the AD-X follows a naming convention for LFA special projects, the first of which going by AD-A, with an AD-B model also spotted over the last few months. All of the cars in question have been one-off models, so that is what we are anticipating with this red and white beauty, too. Accenting the racy red/white livery are a black hood, roof, and wing; all of which are said to be unpainted carbon fiber, rather than a different shade of paint. That the car also wears an even more aggressive than standard body kit - you'll notice an extra chin spoiler on the front fascia of the car - which speaks to what we believe to be a higher level of performance overall. More power than the standard LFA's 552 horsepower could certainly be coaxed from the 4.8-liter V10, too. We'll wait for further word from Lexus and hope for a nice, round 600-horsepower output figure.Lexus LFA Special Edition AD-X spied originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 16:57:00 EST. ETC: noPhoto claims to offer high-tech impunity from speed cameras [w/video]
Filed under: Aftermarket, Etc., Safety, Technology Inventor Jonathan Dandrow's idea began when he first noticed that some cameras can pickup the infrared light from a television remote. It's a piece of useless information at first. Three years later, Dandrow has completed the noPhoto license plate carrier prototype, an ingenious device that thwarts most traffic cameras with a Xenon flash in The Man's ever-seeing eye. In an exclusive interview with Autoblog, Dandrow said he created the noPhoto after hearing about his family member always getting tickets in Washington DC from traffic cameras. So he devised a way to create something that would detect the camera taking a picture and flash a bright light over the license plate, making it impossible for the camera to capture the image of the plate. "All we're trying to do is give drivers privacy," said Dandrow, who says that the device is perfectly legal because it doesn't physically obstruct the license plate. "People should look into how these companies use all of the information they collect. This just stops them from collecting even more." The recent Xavier University graduate said that he didn't develop the noPhoto for people to break the law, but to stand a chance against money hungry municipalities using high tech cameras to collect $100 bills from drivers - lawfully or otherwise. Now Dandrow is in the final stages of the product's development and is trying to raise $80,000 to get the device certified by Underwriter's Laboratories. He has posted his fund-raising campaign on Indiegogo, which is where we first caught wind of it. "I want to build it right," he said. "It's very important to us to get the UL certification. They test it in every situation and make sure you're completely safe."Scroll down to check out Dandrow's video about the device.Continue reading noPhoto claims to offer high-tech impunity from speed cameras [w/video]noPhoto claims to offer high-tech impunity from speed cameras [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 16:32:00 EST. GM closes NY fuel cell facility, consolidates hydrogen research in MI
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hydrogen, Manufacturing/Plants, GM The town of Honeoye Falls, NY, got a jolt on October 5, when General Motors announced it would be closing down its fuel-cell research facility there. The 220 GM employees were given the opportunity to move to Pontiac, MI, where GM will be consolidating its fuel cell program to capitalize on "synergies" with the automaker's Global Powertrain Engineering headquarters. It's a real loss for Honeoye Falls, near Rochester, NY, which was counting on having skilled, high-paid employees living in the area. It had been cited by local officials and business leaders as an example of how well things were going for the area's high-tech business. From GM's perspective, it makes sense to consolidate operations to continue its focus on electric vehicles and fuel cells. Fuel cell vehicles are lagging behind electric vehicles in product planning, but GM has been fascinated with this technology for years. Its first efforts began in 1969, and more attention was given to the technology staring in the late 1990s. GM's fuel cell chief, Charlie Freese, thinks fuel cell vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell version, could be viable commercially by 2015 or 2016. Like other alternative vehicle technologies, though, fuel cell vehicles needs a lot more work first, mostly in improved infrastructure and becoming more cost competitive. GM knows its competitors will be releasing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, too, but Freese says the automaker has not announced any new programs. It's going to take a few years for commercial fuel cell vehicles to be a reality for GM. "The first generation of these cars won't be profitable," Freese said.GM closes NY fuel cell facility, consolidates hydrogen research in MI originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EST. According to SuperCars.net, the GT 001-R is being built to race at the 24 Hours of Dubai race while 22 examples of the street-legal GT 001 will be built for the team to sell. Since 2008, VDS has raced various Ford Mustangs including the FR500C, so it isn't that big of a surprised that the GT 001 and GT 001-R show styling that seems very much to have been influenced by the Mustang. The nose of the cars look like a combination of the late first-gen Mustang with the headlights of a 2013 Mustang while the rear of the car has taillights shaped almost identically to the 2005-2009 'Stangs. Aside from the spectacularly cartoonish Mustang design, the rest of the car uses the same lightweight chassis and powerful drivetrain as the Gillet Vertigo .5 Spirit. This means that a 480-horsepower 4.2-liter Maserati V8 sits under the hood paired with a six-speed sequential transmission.2013 VDS GT 001, GT 001-R are knife-edged Gillets originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 15:59:00 EST. Official: NHTSA warns consumers about dangers of counterfeit airbags [w/video]
Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety, Videos The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is warning vehicle owners of the dangers of counterfeit airbags. During NHTSA testing, the agency discovered fake components that could fail in a spectacular manner, either by not deploying during an accident or by launching hot shrapnel into the driver's face and hands. Currently, the government agency says it is unaware of how large the counterfeit airbag problem could be. The components are not being installed in new vehicles. Rather, the fake airbags are being used as replacement parts in vehicles that have been involved in an accident. Even worse, the replacement parts may look identical to original equipment pieces, right down to the labeling. So, how do you know if your vehicle has a counterfeit airbag? NHTSA says any car or truck that has been in an accident and had its airbag replaced within the past three years by any shop not part of a dealership is at risk. Additionally, shops that have purchased airbags online may also have inadvertently installed the faulty hardware. NHTSA recommends that owners who believe their car or truck may have been repaired using the fake airbags contact a call center operated by their vehicle's manufacturer and arrange to have the airbag inspected. Customers can expect to pay for the inspection themselves. Take a look at the full press release below, including a list of every potentially affected vehicle, as well as a video comparing the function of normal and counterfeit airbags.Continue reading NHTSA warns consumers about dangers of counterfeit airbags [w/video]NHTSA warns consumers about dangers of counterfeit airbags [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 15:30:00 EST.
Project Ugly Horse: Part 1
Filed under: Aftermarket, Motorsports, Budget, Performance, Hatchback, FordMeet the Horse I have always hated this car. Not the Ford Mustang, mind you, nor the ubiquitous Foxbody, but this specific car. It's not because it came from the factory cursed with a heavy and under-powered 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine or an entirely worthless four-speed automatic gearbox. No, I hated this car because once, while I was off pretending to pay attention at college, my father traded two whole International Scout II trucks, their titles and a scad load of new old stock parts for this: a secretary special hatchback Mustang. It made me ill. Sorry, son. I've sold you to a brace of machete-wielding Somali pirates. As a vested devotee of all things International Harvester, this was a sin of inconceivable magnitude. I would have been less crushed if he had sat me down, looked me square in the eye and told me in his most earnest and paternal tones that he spent his working days feeding laundry baskets of kittens to a wood chipper instead of wielding Autocad in a cubical as a structural engineer. Or that, "Sorry, son. I've sold you to a brace of machete-wielding Somali pirates to pay off a blood oath." Confusion. Anger. The betrayal was made all the more painful by the news that the new owner of the two IH bruisers had simply thrown the stack of brand-new 345 heads into the back and hauled the Scouts straight to the crusher for scrap. The locals say you can still hear my teenage screams rolling around the darkened hills of Virginia on a still night.Continue reading Project Ugly Horse: Part 1Project Ugly Horse: Part 1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 15:01:00 EST. ETC: Perdigón Concept shows a future for Lamborghini we'd love to see
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Performance, Etc., Lamborghini Blooming automotive designer Ondrej Jirec, a student at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, may not work for Lamborghini, but we'd argue that he should get an internship in Sant'Agata. Based on this very complete set of renderings of this "2015 Lamborghini Perdigón Concept," we think Jirec shows the kind of chops needed to get the supercar thing done. Conceived of and executed as a personal "after school project," The Perdigón presents a vision of a Bugatti Veyron fighter for the bullish brand, replete with stealth bomber-like surfacing, extreme proportions and an out-of-this-world cockpit. The overall effect is one of Sesto-Elemento-meets-starship-escape-pod, which we dig. Take a look through the gallery of Perdigón Concept images and tell us what you think, in the comments section below.Perdigón Concept shows a future for Lamborghini we'd love to see originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 14:31:00 EST.
