| Posted: 08 Sep 2012 12:33 AM PDT  Un nuevo Challenger con versión Barracuda incluida para 2014 Filed under: Dodge, Cupés, Deportivos, SRT Si haces memoria, recordarás que te contamos hace meses que uno de los productos en desarrollo dentro de Chrysler era el nuevo Dodge Challenger, para lanzarse a finales de 2013, o principios de 2014. Entonces hablamos de un posible cambio de nombre a Barracuda, y una plataforma compartida con Alfa Romeo. Esta vía se exploró concienzudamente, pero finalmente no salió adelante, ya que Marchionne prefirió firmar un acuerdo con Mazda para que el Alfa Spider naciese compartiendo esqueleto con el ligero MX-5. Pero el Challenger sigue su camino. Se mantiene el objetivo de recortar sus dimensiones, con una batalla que pasará de los 2,95 metros de ahora a unos más asumibles 2,85, con la idea de aligerar el coche y hacerlo más compacto. Llegará además con la nueva gama de motores de Chrysler, y con una suspensión independiente en las cuatro ruedas (como ahora) completamente revisada. Pero tal vez lo más interesante que se cuenta (lo cuenta Automotive News), es que el nuevo Challenger tendría una versión SRT bastante diferenciada. La idea es dar réplica a los Mustang GT500 y Camaro ZL1 con un producto "bestial". Y como diferirá tanto (para bien) del Challenger de base, cambiará de nombre y se denominará SRT Barracuda (ahora la versión SRT es simplemente Challenger SRT8). Se habla de un corazón de 6,2 litros sobrealimentado para la bestia, con 600 caballos como mínimo. That's the response Mercedes-Benz is shooting for when it unveils its natural-gas powered B 200 vehicle at the Paris Motor Show later this month. Mercedes is pitching a five-seater that will cost half as much to refuel as its gas-powered equivalent while emitting 16 percent less greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, the 156-horsepower B 200 Natural Gas Drive will get the equivalent of about 56 miles per gallon and have a full-tank range of about 300 miles, all while delivering a 0-62 miles per hour acceleration time of 9.1 seconds. Additionally, the vehicle will feature what Benz calls its "Energy Space" modular body concept, where part of the floor beneath the back seat can be removed to clear more space for natural-gas containers. Mercedes will start selling the Mercedes-Benz B 200 Natural Gas Drive in Europe early next year, though it didn't announce a price. No, that's not terribly long to wait, but the automaker promises to release "information and pictures of the new vehicle" ten days before its world debut. We really don't know what the new concept will be, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a conceptual version of the next IS sedan or possibly another stylish hybrid performance coupe. We'll just have to wait and see. Though not quite as intriguing, Lexus also says it will be showing the new LS 600h F Sport in Paris. It'll most likely look exactly like the LS 460 F Sport, except with blue hybrid badges. Lexus says this will be "the model's first appearance in western Europe." | Posted: 07 Sep 2012 03:59 PM PDT  2013 Volvo S80, XC70 recalled over faulty TPMS Filed under: Sedan, Recalls, Safety, Crossover, Volvo Tire pressure monitoring systems are notoriously persnickety, but an issue found with the TMPS on the 2013 Volvo S80 and XC70 have been deemed worthy of a recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Due to a software glitch in possibly 300 of the Volvos (combined), the "TPMS Service Required" light will come on after 15 minutes of driving above 25 miles per hour, and the TPMS won't be able to warn a driver if a tire is underinflated. That situation contravenes federal Motor vehicle safety standards, necessitating the recall. Volvo will notify owners, at which time they can take their cars to dealers to have the central electronic module reprogrammed free of charge. Para-cycling pits competitors against one another in handbike races. On taking the checkered flag, Zanardi slid from his carbon-fiber bike and hoisted it above his head with one hand in triumph. The victory underscores just how far the former race car driver has come since September 15, 2001. Nearly 11 years ago to the day, Zanardi was competing in a CART race in Lausitz, Germany when a horrific rash saw a competitor clip across the front of his car at nearly 200 miles per hour. The impact took both his legs, and the racer lost over 70 percent of his blood before he got to the hospital. Miraculously, he survived, and while doctors cautioned of a lengthy recovery, Zanardi was walking again in months. Dissatisfied with his prosthetic legs, he designed a set of his own, and it wasn't long before he returned to auto racing in specially-modified cars. Originally, Zanardi began hand biking to stay in shape, but slowly began competing. The Future Car Challenge is just the place to showcase a concept like this, since the event is all about the best of green vehicle technology and covers the gamut from hybrid and electric vehicles to fuel-cell cars. The XJ_e prototype is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine alongside a 69-kilowatt electric motor and a 12.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Future challenge accepted. The Jaguar XJ_e joins the family of efficient vehicles the automaker is rolling out, like the European-market XF 2.2D diesel engine car. The XJ_e is similar to the Range_e plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport that was showcased earlier this year. The Range Rover Sport uses a 3.0-liter V6 along with battery power. As for specifications, Jaguar says the XJ_e will go 25 miles on battery only and offers a combined fuel economy of 61.2 miles per gallon (on the European scale). It produces only 75 grams per kilometer of CO2 emissions - 70 percent less than the gasoline-only V8 version. The diesel XF gets 43.5 mpg on the European combined cycle. Automotive News is reporting that multiple Dodge performance products are likely to hit American streets over the next three years. Perhaps most exciting are the prospective plans for the Challenger in 2014 and 2015. The muscular coupe is likely to get a significant bit smaller for the 2015 model year, with two or three inches set to be removed from its now-generous 116-inch wheelbase, as well as having launch control added to the specification sheet. The upcoming SRT-tuned version of the Challenger, today the SRT8 model, may very well be dubbed the "Dodge Barracuda" for 2015. The resurrected 'Cuda will feature a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, which we are strongly in favor of. And though Dodge isn't offering up any output numbers for such a mill, current competitors from Ford (Shelby GT500) and Chevrolet (Camaro ZL1) would seem to indicate that 500 horsepower is the bare minimum for entry into this market slice. The New York Post reports 25-year-old Rashad Lewis was taken into custody on the third of August after officers stopped him for running several red lights. After searching his car, police found 13 fraudulent credit cards. Both Rashad and his passenger, Gregg Humphreys, were charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and booked in Manhattan. Rashad eventually made bail and was released a week later, and on August 15, he received a ticket from a red light camera showing his car blowing through an intersection. Except Rashad was cooling his heels in a New York City lockup at the time. Either the police or a civilian employee of the department was having a good time with the Mercedes-Benz. Even worse, the car came back with a broken rear window and scratched paint. Officers listed the car in "good" condition when it was deposited at impound, though the NYPD says Rashad didn't have any issues when he picked up the car five days later. Rashad now says he wants to sell his car, and his lawyer has made it clear he has no intention of paying the red light camera fine. The one criticized Europe's biggest automaker for not doing enough to cut automobile greenhouse gas emissions, and Greenpeace was at it again this week. Members of the environmental group picketed the premiere of Volkswagen's seventh-generation Golf at Berlin's New National Gallery earlier this week, according to Reuters. About 50 protestors were present and Greenpeace's Wolfgang Lohbeck said VW was aiming low with a fuel economy rating of about 48 miles per gallon (on the more lenient European driving cycle). Lohbeck says VW has the technology to shoot for more like 75 mpg, and called the Golf's fuel economy results "lame." Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn referred to the protesters as a "small band" and defended the car's fuel economy and performance. Even selling off Opel could cost GM up to $13 billion, the report concluded. GM considered selling off the brand three years ago when the company filed for bankruptcy protection. However, that plan ultimately failed when the board of directors turned it down. Since then, Opel has had several changes in leadership and remains plagued with financial problems. Of course, GM remains supportive of Opel in public. Tan sólo 35 segundos qué, eso sí, nos permiten observar al nuevo crossover en movimiento por tierras británicas. De momento no tenemos datos ni de motores ni de equipamiento, pero parece claro que los primeros serán todos conocidos (quizás algún Ecoboost de un litro) y, en cuanto a los segundos, se espera que puedan llevar el sistema Ford SYNC, climatizador automático, iluminación diurna y, por supuesto, ABS, EBD, un mínimo de seis airbags, control de estabilidad y asistente al arranque en pendientes. En cualquier caso hasta que tengamos la ficha al completo del nuevo EcoSport no saldremos de dudas. Not long after executive editor Chris Paukert drove the Jaguar XKR-S Coupe, I found myself holding the keys to the gorgeous British Racing Green XKR-S Convertible you see here. Mechanically, it's exactly the same as the coupe, save an additional 111 pounds of weight and a slightly less-usable boot. And from behind the wheel, the Convertible's on-road manners don't differ too much from its hardtop kin. Thanks to a revised chassis setup versus the standard XK convertible, the XKR-S isn't plagued with cowl shake or general wobbliness, though there's a still a bit of safe, predictable understeer dialed in to the suspension geometry. Around back, the big cat will happily swing its butt out around a turn when provoked, even with the traction control nannies in full effect. The XKR-S Convertible takes to the road more like a muscle car than a proper sportster, ditching scalpel-like precise handling for pure stabbing force. The most impressive part of the XKR-S formula is the menacing growl that shoots out of what we can only assume are the polished quad exhaust tips of Satan's own vocal cords. But the XKR-S Convertible's pièce de résistance is best seen - or rather, heard - when you drop the top. Nevermind the brute force of the 510-horsepower supercharged V8 underhood, able to slap the 4,079-pound Jaguar to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds, the most impressive part of the XKR-S formula is the menacing growl that shoots out of what we can only assume are the polished quad exhaust tips of Satan's own vocal cords. During my week with the car, I couldn't resist purposely mashing the throttle as I drove out onto Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit, simply so I could hear that heart-fluttering roar bounce off the tall concrete buildings, slamming pedestrians with eight-cylinder aural delight whether they liked it or not. Thing is, though, you get this same sort of experience in the coupe. And while the hardtop XKR-S doesn't come with the wind-in-your-hair experience, it does everything the droptop can do for a full $6,000 less. The same well-appointed, beautifully trimmed interior is there, complete with two excellent sport chairs up front, completely useless rear buckets that are better suited for packages than people, and the same infuriatingly slow infotainment/navigation system we've grown to, well, deal with. BimmerPost recently got a hold of engine dyno run for the new M5, and is reporting that the car's twin-turbo V8 is "severely" underrated. Officially, the M5's 4.4-liter V8 is rated at 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, but the dyno graph reveals numbers at the rear wheels to be 527 hp and 476 lb-ft in completely stock form. While the idea of the engine being underrated is just an assumption, the general rule of thumb is a 15-percent drivetrain loss - if accurate, the new M5's losses would be just six percent. Using the 15-percent rule, the 2013 M5 would lay down 476 hp at the wheels. The idea of BMW underrating its engine outputs is nothing new. Now, the French automaker is playing a major role in the unveiling of El Lada. In this case, Renault and sister company Nissan are 50 percent owners of Lada, which is pitching what will be the first Russian-produced battery-electric vehicle, according to Technologic Vehicles. El Lada, shown below in a five-plus-minute video released by Lada part-owner Avtovaz, is said to have a 60-kilowatt (80-horsepower) electric motor that delivers a top speed of about 80 miles per hour and a single-charge range of about 100 miles. The five-door compact hatchback EV will get its first day-to-day road experience when it's tested by taxis in the city of Stavropol, which is about 100 miles north of the Georgia border in southern Russia. Lada recently stepped up its profile when it recently hired former Mercedes-Benz senior designer and ex-Volvo chief designer Steve Mattin to run the Russian automaker's design operations. It just showed off its Xray concept car at the Moscow Auto Show. The automaker has apparently jumped ahead of Yo Auto, which is owned in part by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov. Both of these track-friendly fraternal twins were just named as 2012 Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety making them the only sub-$30,000 sport coupes to make the list. Aside from the small batch of luxury cars, the IIHS has not performed any more of its small overlap tests, but both the FR-S and BRZ earned top marks for frontal-, side- and rear-crash safety as well as roof strength. Since both cars are practically identical, only the FR-S was used for these crash tests, and it joins the xB, xD and tC for Scion's 2012 Top Safety Pick cars. For Subaru, aside from the old-bodied WRX and the yet-to-be-released XV Crosstrek, all of the automaker's current models are Top Safety Picks, and if it can pull off top safety results for its all-new crossover and next-generation sport sedan, its entire lineup would be on the list... something that even Acura can no longer boast. Ya está prácticamente todo listo para que comience el rodaje de "A todo gas 6" ("The Fast and the Furious") en Tenerife. Será la semana que viene cuando se inicie la grabación de las escenas, si bien ya se puede ver por la isla parte del material que será empleado. Entre las muchas cosas que los chicos de MotorCanario han sido capaces de inmortalizar, cámara en mano, están varios camiones con algunos de los 97 vehículos que serán usados en total. Los que ya podemos asegurar tendrán un papel protagonista serán unos cuantos Land Rover Defender, el conocido Dodge Challenger, un precioso Lotus, varios Nissan GT-R...
