Y es que esta misma tarde se presenta su nueva generación, gemela del Ford Fusion norteamericano, en un evento llamado "Go Further" en Amsterdam. Pero para ir caldeando el ambiente, la casa del óvalo azul ha decidido publicar datos e instantáneas de su nuevo sedán, al que ya conocíamos gracias a un par de fotos previas, y al citado Fusion. Lo más interesante de la breve nota de prensa de la compañía de Detroit es que, en Europa, el Mondeo contará con el motor 1,0 de tres cilindros EcoBoost, el mismo que vimos en el Formula Ford el otro día, ofreciendo 125 caballos y un par máximo de 200 Nm (con función overboost). Ford no ha aclarado ni consumos ni emisiones, pero las ha calificado como "las mejores de la categoría". Habla en la nota de prensa de emisiones inferiores a 130 gramos de CO2 de media por kilómetro. The six spots all feature former Heisman Trophy winners as they shack up in the "Heisman House," including 2011 winner Robert Griffin III as the rookie. Other familiar faces also make a showing, including the sport's only two-time Heisman winner, Archie Griffin from The Ohio State University, as well as Herschel Walker and Matt Leinart. All in all, the ads boast 12 trophy winners and one professional actor. Sean Astin, star of Rudy, shows up for a spell alongside everyone else. What does all this have to do with Nissan? Not much... aside from the fact that a few of the company's 2013 models show up on screen briefly. That's pretty much exactly what happens today, still, but the car in question is now the Model S and Musk is trying to get every employee, new or veteran, to see things the way he sees them: flawed. As we learned recently, the busy Musk (who splits his time 50-50 between Tesla and his rocket-building company SpaceX. Yes, he works seven days a week) personally inspects each Model S before it heads out the door. He sees mistakes in "almost every car" but doesn't send them all back because "In the beginning, we have to be slightly imperfect because. ... Our aspiration is to get to cars that are accurate to the limit of reasonable physics." What does that mean? Well, Musk said Tesla is going to order laser calibration devices, just like SpaceX uses to build rockets. "This is very extreme for the car business, but for the rocket business this is not," he said. "If you want to make the best car, that's what you have to do." The ad will serve as the country's first taste of a full host of S vehicles, and features the S8 adding a bit of spice to an otherwise droll errand run. Audi threw in a few themes from our favorite heist flicks to keep things interesting, and the videography is as sharp as we've come to expect from the German automaker's ad house. Perhaps more interesting than the spot itself, however, is the fact that Audi will once again commit to advertising during the Super Bowl. This will mark the sixth time in a row the company has sponsored the NFL's main event, though Audi isn't saying a word about what this year's commercial will entail. We have good reason to believe that this could only be the much-rumored F1 hypercar successor. Aside from a few spy photos, the only visual hint we get of the next McLaren is this still of time-lapse wind-tunnel testing. In this image, we see the silhouette of a very swoopy design, with several gaping vents. Rumor has it that the engine will be an 800-horsepower version of the company's twin-turbocharged V8. It would also benefit from a 200-horsepower KERS system, for a total output of 1,000 race-bred horses. Sift through the small press release and check out the teaser photo that looks like it was taken at an Avicii concert. So, when that organization says it is mulling over involvement in the upcoming FIA Formula E Championship series, it gets our attention. Big time. When the Formula E recently announced it had its organizational structure in place, and had signed up its first city, it also mentioned something about, "interest being expressed from both traditional racing teams and global brands." No doubt McLaren was one of the teams they had in mind. As if to substantiate that statement, McLaren Racing CEO and team principal Martin Whitmarsh is now being quoted by Reuters as saying, "I think there's quite a lot of interest... it's something that McLaren would be delighted to be involved with so we're obviously looking at it at the moment. Who knows, we might pop up in it." Now, before we get too excited, we should also mention that he tempered those words by saying that, while it may enter a team at some point in the future, it will not happen right away. Rather, McLaren is looking at "the technology challenge and how we can contribute there." The company has previously developed a 120-kW electric motor for automotive applications and also supplies electronic control units to Formula One and NASCAR teams. That's a handy bit of expertise in a sport that's using more electric motivation in a bid to reduce fossil fuel consumption at the track. What we didn't know at the time was that the money came deus ex machina style just before the EV startup reaper was about to knock. Turns out, Tesla's financial situation was much worse back then than anyone realized. AutoblogGreen recently spent an hour interviewing Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and when we asked about the money, Musk said, "The credit for saving Tesla should go to Daimler. It was the Daimler investment that saved Tesla in early 2009. ... 2007 and 2008 were especially bad for us. ... There were a couple of near-death situations." Those near-death situations include the time Musk needed to funnel a lot of his personal capital into Tesla - "I literally had to borrow money for rent" - in order to get through 2008 and early 2009. Having run through a lot of his own money, he appreciated Daimler was investing in Tesla even though Daimler itself was cash strapped. "When someone is hungry themselves and they give you a bit of food, you've got to be grateful for that." Musk added that Tesla's financial situation today is "pretty good," and that the company has "a couple hundred million dollars" in reserve. As long as there aren't a "bunch of screw-ups," then the automaker should be in good financial shape, he said. Following an incident in which a drunken passenger attempted to grab the steering wheel while the car was in motion, one savvy Irish cabbie installed a closed circuit television system into his taxi. The move apparently paid off, as the driver in question was later attacked by another fare, and has successfully used footage from the camera to help prosecute his assailant. Customer-on-cabbie violence isn't the only reason that some of Derry's largest taxi companies, along with many individual drivers, are going the CCTV route. After at least one failed accusation of rape last year, drivers believe that in-car cameras will give them evidence of professional behavior, as well as offering a higher sense of security to their female passengers. Pues bien, hoy ha salido a la luz la primera imagen oficial de su exterior. El nuevo Outlader híbrido ganará la denominación PHEV y será el primer vehículo eléctrico que tenga un sistema de tracción total permanente. De momento hay pocos datos, pero sabemos que la autonomía en modo eléctrico podrá alcanzar los 55 km y, en caso de combinarlo con el motor de combustión, se podrán recorrer hasta 880 km sin repostajes ni recargas (estas últimas se podrán hacer en cualquier toma de red convencional). Su lanzamiento en Japón será durante los primeros meses del año que viene. Para verlo en los concesionarios europeos habrá que esperar hasta la segunda mitad del 2013. Los beneficios antes de impuestos de Volvo Cars han bajado un 84% en la primera mitad de 2012. Los beneficios de los 6 primeros meses fueron de 35,63 millones de dólares frente a los 1.530 millones de dólares que generó en el mismo periodo en 2011. Las ventas han bajado un 4,1%, con 221.309 coches vendidos en la primera mitad del año. Volvo planea reducir su producción un 10% y prescindir de entre 200 y 300 trabajadores, según ha indicado un dirigente sindical, para adecuarse a la caida de la demanda. La marca se vio afectada por la competencia, cada vez más dura, y la crisis global. Y es quVolvo está en plena renovación de su gama (algunos de sus modelos acusan ya una cierta edad, como los C30, XC90 y S80) en un momento en el que la ventas de coches en Europa y China han bajando notablemente. Sin embargo, las ventas de Volvo no se han resentido tanto en el mercado estadounidense. La compañía apuesta fuertemente por el mercado chino (recordemos que la china Geely compró Volvo a Ford en 2010) e incrementar sus ventas mundiales hasta las 800.000 unidades en 2020. | Posted: 05 Sep 2012 02:43 PM PDT  Official: ALMS and Grand-Am make merger official, first joint race named Filed under: MotorsportsEarlier reports of a merger between the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series have proven to be well founded today, as representatives from both series have confirmed that the merger is indeed taking place. Grand-Am founder Jim France and ALMS founder Don Panoz stated jointly this afternoon that the new sports car racing series, as yet unnamed, will kick off with its first joint race at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2014. The new series is likely to present a schedule of some 12 races per year, though each series will continue on independently for the 2013 season. While no confirmation of the exact racing-class structure has been given yet, a continuation of the popular Prototype and GT classes seems likely. Evidence for this came in the form of some Grand-Am and ALMS cars on display for the announcement: a Corvette Daytona Prototype, SRT Viper GTS-R and a Lola B12/80 Judd, amongst others. France (the son of legendary NASCAR founder, Bill France Sr.) will take on the role of Chairman for the new series, with Panoz serving as Vice Chairman. Some larger support from NASCAR is seemingly in evidence, too, with three members of that series' executive structure serving as board members for the new sports car racing tie-up. For their part, early response to the announcement on the part of participating automakers seems bullish. Jamie Allison, Director of Ford Racing, called the event an "epic moment for sports car racing in America." True to form, Russia's first gas-electric model just got a little slower. Yo Auto, the hybrid-vehicle maker launched with help from Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, said the Yo Mobile model will be pushed back to early 2015, reports Agence France-Presse. Originally, it was supposed to debut later this year. An executive with Yo Auto, who resigned because of the delay, said the hold-up was caused by supply issues from a U.S.-based parts maker whose identity wasn't disclosed. The executive denied that the delay was due to the fact that Yo Mobile was nothing more than a publicity stunt. Prokhorov touted the vehicles during a presidential run last spring, then stopped talking about them. As if the previous two recalls weren't bad enough, the brand new 2013 Ford Escape is under fire yet again for, well, fire. Or at least the potential for it. According to The Detroit News, 7,600 Escape models - 6,150 of which are in the United States - equipped with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine are being recalled due to a faulty cup plug in the engine cylinder head. In the event this cup dislodges, coolant could rapidly leak and create what The Detroit News calls a "combustible glycol concentration" that can catch fire near hot engine components. According to Ford, this recall only affects vehicles with manually installed cup plugs and that only approximately 0.4 percent of the recalled Escapes will have faulty parts. The vehicles in question were built between October 5, 2011 and August 31, 2012.Ford has not received any reports of fires from customers, though one Escape reportedly caught fire at a dealership in Tennessee. Back in July, Ford recalled the 2013 Escape due to faulty engine compartment fuel lines in vehicles fitted with the 1.6-liter engine, and asked owners to stop driving the vehicles immediately. The Detroit News reports that Ford will not be issuing a similar warning regarding this new recall because the threat of a fire is much smaller. Also in July, 10,000 Escapes were recalled over a brake pedal interference issue. Nuestros amigos de KPG son socios nuestros en muchas de sus incursiones como fotógrafos espía. La relación viene de lejos. Hoy nos han ofrecido la posibilidad de publicaros esta particular visión suya de cómo podría lucir el sucesor del Ferrari Enzo, que será mostrado a algunos clientes específicos a finales de este año, para presentarse oficialmente en el Salón de Ginebra del próximo mes de marzo. Lo que da valor a estas dos instantáneas creadas por los chicos de KPG es que están realizadas a partir de unas fotos espía reales del coche, casi sin camuflaje, cruzando la información con datos internos de la compañía. Puede que las tomas del paragolpes frontal no sean así, que los grupos ópticos tengan alguna pequeña diferencia, o que la salida de aire del capó no sea exactamente así. Pero en líneas generales, esto que ves aquí debería ser muy, muy parecido al F70 final (o como quiera llamarse, ya que un servidor sigue apostando por F65 como denominación, ya que el setenta aniversario de la marca está, todavía, muy lejos). ¿Qué te parece? Between the development of the Acura NSX, the next-generation Nissan GT-R, the long line of lusty Lamborghini concepts and McLaren tinkerings, we may very well be on the doorstep of a golden age of exotic engineering. But few of those offerings send us licking our chops quite so quickly as the successor of the legendary Ferrari Enzo throne. Christened the F70 internally, the machine reportedly boasts a hybrid drivetrain brawny enough to bolt the Italian menace to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Odds are there's a healthy V12 mounted midship, and if the whispers we hear happen to be true, the F70 will be able to saunter up to a top speed of 250 mph. Our spy photo friends have produced a pair of renderings for us based on their own surreptitiously snapped images that help cut through the awful body cladding we've seen attached to the test cars frolicking about Europe at the moment. If the production car looks even remotely as attractive as these sketches, the world is about to become a much sexier place. With plenty of 458 in the front and hints of F40 in that engine cover, there's plenty to get excited about here. Aside from the license plate getting swapped from a California tag to a German one, the renderings were identical to the early drawings of the U.S.-spec model Honda showed off during its press presentation for the 2013 Accord. This is of note because Russian Honda dealers have typically supplied their buyers with Euro-spec Accord models (think Acura TSX). Honda has now confirmed our suspicions that the Russian Accord will be replaced with a version based on the U.S.-spec model. It's also worth noting that Acura is reportedly heading to Russia in 2014. "We haven't announced plans for Europe," said Chris Martin with Honda public relations, "but the Ruissian model will share sheetmetal and basic design with the U.S. model." Martin made it clear that there will, of course, be some market differences, but that by and large, the two models will be the same. Honda hasn't said which engine options will show up on the Russian order sheet as of yet. And what of Europe? Given the German plate on these sketches and the fact that Russia is officially getting the same model as the North American market, we would wager there's a good chance that Honda will grace the EU with the same machine. Hoy por fin sabemos cómo será su aspecto, aunque curiosamente la denominación comercial podría no ser la misma (por ahora la firma lo denomina New Global Compact Car). Estéticamente los cambios serán pequeños y sólo ciertos detalles parecen diferenciar las variantes vendidas en Tailandia de las destinadas al viejo continente (paragolpes, ópticas posteriores, etc.). En el Salón del Automóvil de París conoceremos todos los detalles, aunque ya podemos adelantarte que bajo el capó tendrá un motor de un litro de bajas emisiones (92 g/km de CO2). That's the short mission statement from an artist activist who wants to make bike riding the most popular transportation mode within the next 18 years. Besides cutting carbon dioxide and air pollution, biking is fun and can look very cool, says Mati Kalwill, creator of the Buenos Aires culture and activism group La Vida en Bici (Life on a Bike). Kalwill christened his new global mission Bikestorming, and its modus operandi is: "a collaboration platform to make bicycles the most popular form of urban transportation on the planet." La Vida en Bici launched Bikestorming.org at Rio+20, the United Nation's Conference on Sustainable Development, which took place in late June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For Bill McKibben of 350.org, an activist group committed to stopping climate change, the conference was a big downer and not much was accomplished. In the Bikestorming video available below, though, McKibben says he was happy to see the launch of Bikestorming.org, a movement to get the world's population to ride bikes for 51 percent of time they are using transportation by the year 2030. Lots of cities and cities and towns are pushing for it, and now it just needs to spread all over the planet, he said. Kalwill says he is seeing bikes reaching a critical mass of awareness: "[Bikes] are on every politician's radar now. In the last year we've seen bicycle policy and infrastructure initiatives emerge in very diverse cities such as Mendoza, Rosario, Posadas, and Córdoba - as well as growing attention paid to bicycles in Buenos Aires' transportation policy and infrastructure." But could you build a go-kart large enough and sturdy enough to carry your own weight? Don't answer yet. Could you then make this monster kart actually move under its own power, albeit slowly, like the real thing? We thought not, hotshot. Mind you, it seems as though the adult in this video - a Dutchman by the name of Eric Steenstra - is running the show, and likely the build. The go kart (dubbed "Le-GoKart" on Steenstra's tumblr page) makes use of 48 Lego Mindstorms NXT motors and 16 NXT battery packs, has working headlights and taillights and can support the weight of a 222-pound adult man. It is constructed exclusively from Lego parts, too - no cheating.
