Gallery: Audi SQ5 TDI 2013 Share TweetAudi elige San José Chiapa, México, para localizar su nueva factoría originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 03:58:00 EST.
Official: Refreshed 2013 Ford Fiesta revealed in Amsterdam
Filed under: Budget, Hatchback, Ford Set for a live reveal at a special product event in Amsterdam this afternoon, the 2013 Ford Fiesta offers freshened looks, a host of new technology and a lot more for global small car drivers. Sharp-eyed readers will quickly notice that Ford has downsized its trapezoidal front grille - as seen on the revised Fusion and Taurus - to augment the aggressiveness of the new Fiesta's schnoz. Angular headlights offer LED elements while bracketing a new "power-dome" design on the car's hood. For the European market - Ford is still mum on the details for U.S.-specification Fiesta models - the company is touting its three-cylinder 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine as the bread-and-butter powerplant. That frugal turbo mill is expected to give the Fiesta best-in-class fuel economy in the highly competitive European small car market, though the automaker has yet to report official consumption figures. The revised Fiesta brings with it, happily, a new version of the pocket-rocket Fiesta ST, too. That little speed machine will make use of a 182-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, as well as electronic torque vectoring, and looks like it will be a total hoot to drive for old-world hoons. The 2013 Fiesta is set to be packed with premium technologies, as well. Ford's well-known SYNC infotainment system will be available, of course, along with such niceties as the Active City Stop system, which proposes to help drivers avoid low-speed collisions. What's more, the MyKey system will be available for Euro customers for the first time. This technology allows owners to configure maximum speed limits, audio controls and enables all safety aids - ostensibly to be used by protective parents to rein in unseasoned young drivers. (And to think, all our parents had were threats of violence and cheap gas.) Again, all of the specifications listed here and in the press release below are for the European version of the new Fiesta only. Expect to see details for our version of the new Fiesta as they are made available later this year.Continue reading Refreshed 2013 Ford Fiesta revealed in AmsterdamRefreshed 2013 Ford Fiesta revealed in Amsterdam originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 00:01:00 EST. Video: If you're going to fake being run over, make sure a dashcam isn't on
Filed under: Government/Legal, Humor If you live in certain parts of the world, its best just to own a dashcam and leave it running at all times. Luckily, this Taiwanese driver had is camera rolling and was able to prevent himself from becoming a scam victim. He is not alone in this fight. In the video, a girl is seen standing in the street before she runs at the car and lunges onto the hood, acting as if she had been hit. The intrepid driver, knowing that he has the upper hand in this ruse, exits his vehicle and begins chiding the would-be scammer for her failed attempts. One would assume that in taking the phone out of its holster, he was alerting the authorities of this incident. This type of scam is rampant throughout various parts of the world, usually involving other vehicles, but in this case it was a human being. It has prompted many drivers to leave dashcams rolling constantly. An unexpected byproduct of this self-preservation effort is an abundance of documented automotive chicanery. Russia alone has to be the world leader in absurd dashcam videos.Click below to see this video and appreciate the absurdity of running at a moving car.Continue reading If you're going to fake being run over, make sure a dashcam isn't onIf you're going to fake being run over, make sure a dashcam isn't on originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 19:59:00 EST. Elon Musk: 'The credit for saving Tesla should go to Daimler'
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, Daimler Back in 2009, the plug-in vehicle world was surprised to learn that Daimler had invested $50 million in Tesla Motors. What we didn't know at the time was that the money came deus ex machina style just before the EV startup reaper was about to knock. Turns out, Tesla's financial situation was much worse back then than anyone realized. We recently got to spend an hour interviewing Tesla CEO Elon Musk. When we asked about the money, Musk said, "The credit for saving Tesla should go to Daimler. It was the Daimler investment that saved Tesla in early 2009. ... 2007 and 2008 were especially bad for us. ... There were a couple of near-death situations." Those near-death situations include the time Musk needed to funnel a lot of his personal capital into Tesla - "I literally had to borrow money for rent" - in order to get through 2008 and early 2009. Having run through a lot of his own money, he appreciated that Daimler was investing in Tesla even though Daimler itself was cash strapped. "When someone is hungry themselves and they give you a bit of food, you've got to be grateful for that." Musk added that Tesla's financial situation today is "pretty good," and that the company has "a couple hundred million dollars" in reserve. As long as there aren't a "bunch of screw-ups," then the automaker should be in good financial shape, he said. Stay tuned for more from our one-on-one interview, including the full transcript, later this week.Elon Musk: 'The credit for saving Tesla should go to Daimler' originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 19:46:00 EST. Cadillac XTS lineup expands to livery, limo and hearse models
Filed under: Aftermarket, Sedan, Plants/Manufacturing, Cadillac, Specialty, LuxuryCadillac has announced a trio of new specialty vehicles based on the 2013 XTS, including a livery sedan, limousine, and 'funeral coach' (read: hearse). The first model mentioned, the livery sedan, is a factory package from General Motors, and features an air-leveling rear suspension, heated rear seats, and both side and rear window shades. All that, along with a tri-zone climate control unit, and you have one attractive ride to and from the airport. Buy what about that three day bender in Vegas for your friends bachelor party? Better get him the XTS limousine. The limo and hearse are co-developed with selected aftermarket companies, which perform the work based on GM direction and specs. Cadillac spokesperson David Caldwell expanded upon that notion, saying "[we] determine and specify the types of specialty bodies that can be done, the amount of 'stretch' we support, etc. There is a small network of Professional Vehicle companies who are authorized to build these - we do not build specialty vehicle bodies 'in-house'." While some features were mentioned for the livery sedan, little was specified about the limo or hearse. No pricing has been mentioned at this time, and it is likely that pricing would be on a case-by-case basis with clients. Caldwell brought up that the established player in the livery market, the Lincoln Town Car, "has for a long time been the far-and-away market leader for these - and that will likely continue to be the case. But we are doing something specific for this, in a different direction." And what exactly would that be? Offering a livery car that is more than just a taxi with an all-black paint job; "we are offering the Livery Package with a bit more luxury inside than standard XTS models... which honestly will limit the volume quite a bit, but is the right approach for how we wish to present the brand." Quality over quantity? How very un-fleet-vehicle of Cadillac, and an approach that could determine which "black car" you hail when leaving the airport.Continue reading Cadillac XTS lineup expands to livery, limo and hearse modelsCadillac XTS lineup expands to livery, limo and hearse models originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 18:45:00 EST. Spy Shots: Ford Transit Connect makes a Fiesta face
Filed under: Spy Photos, Minivan/Van, Work, Ford Since it has made its way to American shores, the Ford Transit Connect has proven to be nearly everything that one could ask for in a small commercial van: utile, frugal and easy to drive in tight quarters. What the van has never been accused of being, however, is particularly pretty. And, while we can't confirm with unerring certainty that the upcoming revision of the TC will be a looker, we do see evidence of a little more form to go with all of that function. This new set of spy shots indicates that the Transit Connect will borrow liberally from the front end of the Fiesta, with headlights and grille both mimicking that fetching small car. Around back you'd be hard pressed not to notice the thinner, longer rear lighting elements, which appear both sleek and modern even in this heavily cladded context. The Ford prototype in question makes use of a one-piece tailgate that is hinged on the roof, though we'd expect that the side-hinged double rear doors of the current model will still be available. Expectations are that the new Transit Connect will arrive in North America and Europe as a 2014 model, sometime in the second half of next year. Small business owners everywhere, rejoice.Ford Transit Connect makes a Fiesta face originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 19:22:00 EST. Official: Audi chooses San José Chiapa, Mexico for new North American plant
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Crossover, Audi, LuxuryAudi has announced that it has settled on San José Chiapa, Mexico for its newest production facility in North America. The new plant will house production for the successor to the current Audi Q5 after the facility is up and running in 2016. Expected annual output capacity is projected to be 150,000 units. Construction work on the plant buildings is slated to begin in mid 2013. After declaring its intention to build a new factory in North America earlier this year, the German automaker reviewed more than a dozen locations before settling on the municipality in the Mexican state of Puebla. Overall site conditions, logistic links and infrastructure and a good supply of well-qualified employees were chief amongst the reasons for the selection of San José Chiapa. It also probably doesn't hurt that parent company Volkswagen already has a plant in the area. Audi maintains that the Mexican plant will help it meet "key requirements" of its overall growth strategy through 2020, including steady product supply to the North American market. Said Audi General Works Council Chairman, Peter Mosch, "The new location in Mexico will unlock further growth for us, and also protect capacity at the main plants." Mosch continued, "The latter will increasingly step into the role of lead plants for our technologies in developing modern production methods, using new materials and joining techniques, and with regard to electric mobility." The San José Chiapa plant will bring VW's total facilities in Mexico to three - the automaker also maintains a plant in Silao. Scroll down to read the official press release.Continue reading Audi chooses San José Chiapa, Mexico for new North American plantAudi chooses San José Chiapa, Mexico for new North American plant originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 17:59:00 EST.
Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video]
Filed under: MPG, Ford, RacingFord has announced a new version of its spec racer that pushes the bounds of what small-displacement, turbocharged engines can do. Formula Ford, as the name suggests, is a single-seat, open wheel race car powered by a (you guessed it) Ford powerplant. As the cars are made of lightweight materials, the usual Formula Ford engine is a 1.6-liter mill, but this particular racer has been fitted with the 2012 International Engine of the Year, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost inline-three. This particular Formula Ford has also been converted to road use and has been testing on Germany's famed Nürburgring. There, it recorded the 11th-fastest lap ever at the 'Ring. At 7 minutes, 22 seconds, it was faster around the famed German track than the Ferrari Enzo, Lamborghini Aventador and Pagani Zonda. This particular 1.0-liter engine has been tuned to put out 202 horsepower, making this feat of beating the aforementioned supercars around the 'Ring even more impressive. The Formula Ford EcoBoost also has an unofficial top speed of 158.8 miles per hour, can get from zero to 60 mph in less then four seconds and can achieve 118 miles per gallon... at 35 mph. Check out the press release and video below to learn more about this exciting vehicle and the other Ford models in which this powerplant may soon find itself.Continue reading Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video]Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 17:54:00 EST. August 2012: Big Jumps Edition
Filed under: Car Buying, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, By the NumbersVolkswagen, Honda and Toyota Post Big GainsIf you want evidence that the economy is on the mend, look no further than the string of positive monthly sales reports coming from the auto industry this year. August continues the trend with the vast majority of brands and companies reporting improved sales numbers compared to the same month last year, Volkswagen (+62.54 percent), Honda (+57.88 percent) and Toyota (+47.5 percent) leading the way for major manufacturers. Honda and Toyota's big gains are easy to explain. Just repeat the line we've been using all summer about these two Japanese giants enjoying the fruits of restored production capacity following last year's onslaught of natural disasters in their home region. Volkswagen's big jump, however, is harder to explain, and looks to be consolidated mostly in the Passat model line where sales jumped from just 314 last August (before the midsize sedan was redesigned) to 10,090 last month. Smaller sales gains from the Golf, Jetta, Beetle, Tiguan and Touareg also contributed. Another individual model that jumped out at us while compiling the numbers is the Ford Escape. The all-new 2013 Escape is a big departure in both style and content compared to the last generation, which sold very well even into its waning months. We've been curious to know if consumers would embrace the new Escape's slicker shape and higher price. The answer is a resounding yes based on last month's sales of the new model, which totaled 28,188 units, a 36.8-percent improvement compared to last August and a number high enough to make the new Escape one of the industry's best selling models overall last month. Check out how the entire auto industry did in the monthly sales chart below, and visit our By the Numbers section to see all past months.*Brands and companies are displayed in descending order according to their percentage change in volume sales. There were 27 selling days in August 2012 versus 26 selling days in August 2011, so the change in monthly sales volume will be different than the change in average daily sales rate (DSR) for each brand/company. Also, brands are combined and reported as companies only if their sales figures are released jointly.August 2012: Big Jumps Edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 17:15:00 EST.
Official: Seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf Unveiled in Germany
Filed under: Europe, Hatchback, Volkswagen Ladies and gentlemen, your new Volkswagen Golf has arrived. The next generation of Volkswagen's best-selling car debuted at a press conference today in Berlin, Germany. According to Volkswagen, the new Golf offers "more features, even better safety, and more performance." You know, the usual. One item particularly of note is the fact that this Golf is 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, through a holistic diet (and new MQB architecture) that shaves weight in places as minute as the wiring and air conditioning. The use of high-strength steel has gone up by 28 percent, as well, compared with just six percent before. The Golf you see here is the European-spec model, so in addition to perhaps different-colored indicators and the lack of a Euro-spec license plate, its unclear whether or not U.S. customers will see the new 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four found underhood. Little has been said regarding U.S.-spec powertrains, though earlier reports have stated that the aging 2.5-liter inline-five will be swapped out in favor of a 1.8-liter turbocharged four. Still, we don't yet have any official word yet on pricing, availability, or the confirmation of the above drivetrain speculation. We will bring you that information as soon it becomes available. For now, scroll down to read Volkswagen's initial press release.Continue reading Seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf Unveiled in GermanySeventh-generation Volkswagen Golf Unveiled in Germany originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 16:28:00 EST. Honda's modest sales target adds 200 Fit EVs in Japan
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Manufacturing/Plants, Legislation and Policyest-sales-target-adds-200-fit-evs-in-japanHonda continues its low-volume rollout of the Fit EV with a decision to lease 200 units in Japan over the next two years, mostly to local governments and businesses. After unveiling the car in the U.S. last November, Honda announced it expects to bring about 1,100 units to market over the next three years. The number could be larger, though, since Honda will be monitoring market acceptance to gauge production volume. We suspect the modest sales target has something to do with compliance with California's regulation that large automakers build at least some zero-emission vehicles. Honda's development team created the Fit EV with three targets: build an EV with greater range requiring less battery capacity, enhance motor drive performance and make the battery charging as time efficient as possible. The development team used two key words to define the EV's identity - "fun" and "mottainai" (which translates to "no waste.") Honda chose the basic package of its internal combustion engine Fit with its compact body size and occupant comfort, and worked on building an electrified version that maximizes energy efficiency. Honda was able to achieve what Green Car Congress calls "the current best AC energy consumption rate of 106 Wh/km and one-charge mileage of 225 km (140 miles) in JC08 mode." As for limited production and sales targets, Honda remains in line with other plug-in-hesitant major automakers like Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi.Honda's modest sales target adds 200 Fit EVs in Japan originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 16:04:00 EST. Official: Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video]
Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, FordFord has announced a new version of its spec racer that pushes the bounds of what small-displacement, turbocharged engines can do. The Formula Ford EcoBoost also has an unofficial top speed of 158.8 miles per hour, can get from zero to 60 mph in less then four seconds and can achieve 118 miles per gallon... at 35 mph. Check out the press release and video below to learn more about this exciting vehicle and the other Ford models in which this powerplant may soon find itself.Continue reading Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video]Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 15:44:00 EST.
Video: Fallen Kansas City tow truck driver honored with impressively long procession
Filed under: Truck, Safety, Videos, Work Blake Gresham, an 18-year-old tow truck driver in Kansas City, Missouri, was tragically killed on August 27 while he was helping a stranded motorist. Gresham's death brings attention to the "Move Over" law that has been passed in most states, and to further raise awareness for this law and honor the fallen driver, a procession of tow trucks traveled from Grandview, Missouri to his final resting place in Liberty, Missouri. While "Move Over" laws differ state to state, they are meant to move traffic away from or slow down vehicles passing vehicles parked on the side of the road. In Missouri, the law only applies to vehicles with red or blue lights, which means it doesn't apply to tow trucks equipped with amber lights. Gresham's family, owners of GT Towing where he had worked, have started a nonprofit organization called Move Over for Blake with the goal of making the roads and shoulders safer for tow truck drivers and emergency personnel. Making Gresham's incident even more dangerous, the vehicle he had responded to was located on a bridge, meaning the shoulder had even less space for him to work safely. No information was released on the driver who hit Gresham or whether he or she will face any charges. Close to 200 tow trucks made the procession which was captured in the 13-minute video. Scroll down to see the entire procession (which starts at about the 2:00 mark of the video).Continue reading Fallen Kansas City tow truck driver honored with impressively long processionFallen Kansas City tow truck driver honored with impressively long procession originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 14:59:00 EST.
