Audi A7 'coasting' hybrid knows when to be quiet [w/video]
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Hybrid, Audi It looks like Audi is the latest automaker to equip a car with technology that makes humans look plain ol' dumb by comparison. In this case, the German automaker is developing a so-called "coasting" hybrid, which is a variation of the stop-start feature being included in an expanding stable of vehicle models. In fact, the system is similar to what we saw on the Volkswagen Golf Twin Drive in 2008, but Audi uses a three-cylinder gas-powered TFSI engine instead of the four-cylinder diesel that was found in the Golf. A version of Twin Drive was developed for the Audi A3, as well. The iHEV (Intelligent Hybrid Vehicle) is now being developed for the Audi A7 sedan, though the automaker hasn't said anything about timeframe, cost or availability. Still, the company came out with a nifty video (see it below), complete with computer-created graphics showing the car climbing and descending hills with the help of the hybrid system. The video's explanation was minimalist, but UK's Autocar laid out the details of the system, which includes a 48-volt electric motor powered by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery that, unlike current stop-start systems that cut the engine when the car is at a standstill, actually cuts or idles the engine when the car's in motion in order to save fuel. In other words, it can coast. Audi goes one step further by equipping the A7 with a navigation system that collects data on the inclines and declines down the road (literally) and uses the information to speed up, slow down or shut down the gas engine appropriately. The upshot is that the car, when tested on 38 miles of winding country roads, was able to shut down its gas engine during 28 percent of the journey and boosted fuel economy compared to a conventional A7 by about 10 percent.Continue reading Audi A7 'coasting' hybrid knows when to be quiet [w/video]Audi A7 'coasting' hybrid knows when to be quiet [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 19:41:00 EST. Paris: Peugeot 208 Type R5 rally car looks fast sitting still
Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Peugeot, Off-Road, Racing Last week, we were able to bring you all of the details regarding Peugeot's new 208 Type R5 rally car, but there was only a shadowy teaser image with which to illustrate the pre-production rally titan. Thankfully, with our meticulous shooters combing the floor, we now have a good long look at the Peugeot 208 R5, which the French automaker confirms will race next year in series like the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, European Rally Championship and the National Championships. The 208 R5 is, of course, just as racy as we'd hoped, with a wheels-at-the-absolute-corners stance, huge white shoes wearing hometown Michelin rubber, a sizable rear wing and sporty graphics as far as the eye can see. Don't get used to seeing it in quite so gleaming a shade of white, however, as this one little guy is destined to get dirty, fast.Continue reading Peugeot 208 Type R5 rally car looks fast sitting stillPeugeot 208 Type R5 rally car looks fast sitting still originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 19:30:00 EST. Paris: 2013 Kia Pro_cee'd three-door proceeds to impress [w/video]
Filed under: Budget, Europe, Videos, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Kia Sexy as MPVs are, the new Carens wasn't the only world premiere happening on the Kia stand at today's Paris Motor Show. Here, we see the new three-door Pro_cee'd hatchback - a sharp-looking car that shares many of its underpinnings with the Hyundai i30 three-door that also took the stage at the Paris expo. Aside from the three-door body style, the Pro_cee'd doesn't differ too much from the five-door Cee'd that bowed in Geneva earlier this year. That means buyers will be treated to a host of powertrain options, in both gasoline and diesel variants, ranging from 89 to 133 horsepower, mated to six-speed manual, automatic and even one dual-clutch transmission. But Kia is hoping the Pro_cee'd will win over buyers who want something stylish above all. Peter Schreyer, Kia's Chief Design Officer, stated that "You know from a single glance that this is a car you want to drive, not just own." If you're of like mind, have a glance below for the full details and a quick video.Continue reading 2013 Kia Pro_cee'd three-door proceeds to impress [w/video]2013 Kia Pro_cee'd three-door proceeds to impress [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 19:01:00 EST. Paris: 2013 Citroën DS3 Cabrio shows trick folding top to the world
Filed under: Convertible, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Citroën Citroën's DS3 line has been a huge success in its home market of France ever since the car was launched in 2009. Sitting in the fat-middle part of the luxury category, it only makes sense that a convertible variant for the DS3 pop up sooner or later - and later is the Paris Motor Show. The 2013 DS3 Cabrio should provide a stylish roofless option for European customers when it goes on sale in the beginning of 2013, especially as it boasts the same buttoned-down bodylines of the standard hatchback. That pattered, fabric roof affair slides and folds neatly away automatically, and can come to rest in one of two positions. The whole affair reminds us a lot of the rag roof on the Fiat 500C, albeit fitted to a vehicle that is far more useful for back seat passengers. While we already shared most of the details of the car, our gallery of live images is worth a browse, even if you're not mad for all things Citroën.Continue reading 2013 Citroën DS3 Cabrio shows trick folding top to the world2013 Citroën DS3 Cabrio shows trick folding top to the world originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 18:30:00 EST. Paris: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is world's first production plug-in hybrid CUV [w/video]
Filed under: Hybrid, Videos, Paris Motor Show, Crossover, Mitsubishi, Electric Though Mitsubishi first showed us the form of its 2013 Outlander in Geneva a while back, the company saved its plug-in hybrid crossover for this week's Paris Motor Show soiree. Mitsubishi is quite proud to offer what it says is the world's first production PHEV utility vehicle, a new model that makes use of established technologies within the company. Learnings from the company's i-MiEV electric car have worked there way into a vehicle that can travel up to 55 kilometers (34 miles) on lithium-ion battery power. Two electric motors independently power the front and rear wheels of the Outlander, while the gasoline-powered engine can be used as a generator for the motors, or to power the vehicle directly. The target combined fuel economy for the Outlander PHEV is 61 km/liter, or roughly 143 miles per gallon. The Outlander PHEV will be introduced in the Japanese market in the first part of 2013, with European and North American markets to follow on. There is no word about an on-sale date, but while you're pondering the possibilities, check out an official video by scrolling down and peruse our high-res image gallery.Continue reading Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is world's first production plug-in hybrid CUV [w/video]Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is world's first production plug-in hybrid CUV [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 17:58:00 EST. Paris: Renault Clio is the bold new face of France's diamond brand
Filed under: Europe, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Renault, Design/Style Check out the new Renault Clio, which has just been revealed at the Paris Motor Show. If you like what you see, then chances you are going to like future Renault models. Along with introducing the fourth-generation Clio, Renault also says that this new styling will be the new face of the French automaker's future products. Once classified as a supermini, the Clio has since grown into a B-segment contender similar to the closely related Nissan Versa. The centerpiece of the new design features a large Renault logo that stands out against a black background in the grille. Like the previous Clio, the new model will be available in both five-door hatchback and estate/station wagon variants, but for now, it doesn't appear a three-door model will make it into the mix. Make no mistake, the Clio is one of the most important reveals of the entire Paris show. And Renault is treating it as such, with plans to launch it with "no fewer than five" new engines. On top of that, the big Clio hardware news is the addition of stop/start technology and a dual-clutch transmission available on the option list. Renault says that its 90-horsepower 1.5-liter dCi engine will attain fuel consumption figures close to a hybrid-electric vehicle, making it the first car in the B-segment to do so. On the technology front, the Clio introduces Renault's new R-Link multimedia system that will eventually spread to the rest of the Renault lineup. R-Link not only includes features like TomTom navigation and traffic, but it also allows drivers to operate Coyote Series alerts (a European social-media-like service warning of road hazards) and the R-Link Store to find and use automotive apps. Be sure to flip through our live photos of the Clio hatchback, and if you have time, Renault's mile-long press release is posted below.Continue reading Renault Clio is the bold new face of France's diamond brandRenault Clio is the bold new face of France's diamond brand originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 17:41:00 EST. Paris: 2013 Volvo V40 R-Design leaves us feeling blue in Paris
Filed under: Performance, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Volvo, Design/Style, Luxury We were more than a little bummed when Volvo proclaimed it didn't intend to bless the United States with its V40 hatchback/wagon. We're even more bummed now that there's this newly debuted R Design model at the Paris Motor Show. Even though the most powerful engine remains the same 254-horsepower turbo five cylinder (a 115-horsepower diesel engine is also on offer), there are a number of worthwhile updates to the R Design over the standard V40. A reworked front fascia, rear diffuser, twin exhaust and five-spoke diamond-cut wheels in either 17- or 18-inch sizes add some spice to the car's already attractive shape. If that's not enough, buyers can opt for the R Design Lux package to enjoy an embossed leather interior along with other high-end bits and pieces. There are also blue accents crowning the dash and its three switchable treatments - Elegance, Eco and Performance. Perhaps most intriguingly, though, Volvo is offering a suspension package that's been tuned by Swedish racing driver Robert Dahlgren. The chassis sits 10mm lower than stock, with firmer springs and shocks, uprated struts, monotube dampers and thicker antiroll bars. Yep, we wish we could get our hands on one of these in the States... And while we're wishing, how about a Polestar update, too? In any case, feel free to peruse the press release below and check out our high-res Rebel Blue image gallery above.Continue reading 2013 Volvo V40 R-Design leaves us feeling blue in Paris2013 Volvo V40 R-Design leaves us feeling blue in Paris originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 17:21:00 EST. Gallery: Dacia Sandero Stepway 2013Continue reading Dacia Sandero Stepway - París 2012Dacia Sandero Stepway - París 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 17:11:00 EST. Paris: Peugeot Onyx Scooter Concept is half motorcycle, half scooter, all kinds of cool
Filed under: Concept Cars, Hybrid, Paris Motor Show, Peugeot, Motorcycle, Design/Style, ElectricPeugeot is referring to its Onyx Concept Scooter as a two-in-one supertrike. Seems fitting. Not only can this innovative hybrid three-wheeler hit a top speed of 93 miles per hour, its 400cc engine and electric motor combination offers up 60 horsepower (45 kilowatts) and 42 pound-feet of torque, which should be plenty of gumption for quick getaways from traffic. Handling ought to be a treat on the Onyx Scooter, with a 200/50 R17 rear tire and dual front wheels like the Piaggio MP3. Plus, there are two so-called driving positions: one, called Sport, that puts the rider in a motorcycle-like feet-back position, and another, Urban, with a more scooter-traditional feet-forward stance. Naturally, everyone is concerned with fuel economy these days, and the Onyx Concept Scooter delivers with a rating of 117.6 miles per gallon on what we assume is the European combined cycle. Running on electricity alone, the Onyx can travel up to 18.6 miles. Using gas, it has a range of 310 miles. For more details, feel free to click below. For a full image gallery of live shots from the Paris Motor Show, see above.Continue reading Peugeot Onyx Scooter Concept is half motorcycle, half scooter, all kinds of coolPeugeot Onyx Scooter Concept is half motorcycle, half scooter, all kinds of cool originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 16:59:00 EST. Paris: Lamborghini developing Urus while still awaiting green light
Filed under: Performance, SUV, Paris Motor Show, Lamborghini While much of the focus for Lamborghini at the Paris Motor Show was on its new strategy for the Gallardo line using styling cues to differentiate the rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and Superleggeria models, the Italian automaker is continuing development of its Urus SUV, even though it has not yet gotten final approval yet. Stephan Winkelmann, the firm's CEO and president, confirmed to Autoblog that he is confident the project will be approved by the VW Group, but has not yet received the final blessing and says much depends on the whether or not there will be a new architecture to underpin the vehicle. However, the fact that Porsche showed the Panamera Sport Turismo concept demonstrates that there is enough flexibility in that platform to perhaps support the Lamborghini concept. Even if the go ahead is granted soon, Winkelmann doesn't expect the Urus to be ready for sale until 2017. In the meantime, the company is aggressively pursuing the new Gallardo strategy and promises to have its successor that goes beyond the current facelift ready by 2014. Next year, Lamborghini will busy itself with building the 20 Sesto Elemento carbon-fiber-intensive models as well as celebrating the company's 50th anniversary.Lamborghini developing Urus while still awaiting green light originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 16:41:00 EST. Teased: Toyota bugs out, previews Smart INSECT connected EV concept
Filed under: Concept Cars, Technology, Hatchback, Toyota, Electric Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, the Toyota COMS electric vehicle is becoming the Smart INSECT. Unrelated to Daimler's Smart brand, the INSECT (yes, it's an acronym, one that stands for "Information Network Social Electric City Transporter") is a one-seat electric vehicle that is designed to be connected to its driver and the world. The gullwinged INSECT uses "motion sensors, voice recognition and behavior prediction" to make the driver feel tied to the wheels, as well as to his or her home via the online Toyota Smart Center. The doors can open based on "the movement of the driver's hand." The car can also identify faces and "authenticate a driver registered with the vehicle when he or she approaches." This thing should have antennae. Toyota will fist display the INSECT at CEATEC JAPAN 2012 next week (think: Japan's version of our Consumer Electronics Show). Earlier reports hinted that Toyota's then-unnamed small EV would cost around $12,500, but Toyota did not talk about an MSRP in the teaser release issued today. You can find it below.Continue reading Toyota bugs out, previews Smart INSECT connected EV conceptToyota bugs out, previews Smart INSECT connected EV concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 16:20:00 EST. Paris: Hyundai ready to jump back into rallying with i20 WRC
Filed under: Motorsports, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Hyundai, Racing At virtually the same moment that it was revealed Hyundai was exiting all motorsports activities here in the States, the Korean automaker was on stage at the Paris Motor Show making a major commitment to one of the most exciting - and costliest - racing series the globe has to offer, the World Rally Championship. Showing this i20 WRC racecar mockup (note the lack of an interior), Hyundai announced it is poised to return to the gravel-spitting, sideways-sliding yumpfest in short order. Return, you say? Yes - even before its meteoric rise as an automaker, Hyundai was toiling away in the series' F2 class back back in the late 90s. The team then graduated to the premier series in 2000, campaigning an Accent hatchback until 2003, at which point it ceased motorsports activities. Specs for the rallygoing i20 haven't been disclosed, but in order to meet regulations, this Hyundai will need to rely on a 1.6-liter engine, presumably turbocharged to around 300 horsepower. All-wheel drive and a sequential gearbox are givens as well. Hyundai has not yet announced when the i20 WRC will compete, nor has the FIA governing body granted it official entry into the series, though one is surely coming. After a few lean years in terms of manufacturer support, the WRC is poised for a bit of a rebirth, with new teams to be fielded from Mini with its Countryman racer and a Toyota entrant based on its Yaris subcompact.Continue reading Hyundai ready to jump back into rallying with i20 WRCHyundai ready to jump back into rallying with i20 WRC originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 15:58:00 EST. Paris: BMW debuts M Performance add-ons for 3 Series
Filed under: Aftermarket, Sedan, Performance, Paris Motor Show, BMW, Luxury The next-generation M3 is indeed coming, but if you simply can't wait for the hardcore M model, BMW will now sell you new M Performance add-ons for the 3 Series sedan, a whole host of which have been fitted to one of the show cars here in Paris. And don't worry - these optional extras aren't all show and no go. BMW's show car started as a 335i M Sport sedan, but was upfitted with 20-inch light alloy wheels, an M Performance braking system, upgraded suspension and an aero package. Other bits of visual flare include a rear spoiler, carbon fiber mirror caps and blacked-out grille kidneys. And while BMW's release only details power upgrades for four-cylinder diesel models, the 335i shown here uses the catalog's engine silencer system which, contrary to its name, is said to deliver a decidedly sportier sound to both the engine and exhaust notes. Inside, there's an M Performance steering wheel with Race Display (a small screen that displays some of the vehicle's vital stats), stainless steel pedals and Alcantara trim found throughout the cabin. And of course, there's plenty of "M Performance" badging. You know, to really drive the point home. But these upgrades aren't just for 3 Series owners. Oh, no. BMW will offer these specific parts on other models, including the 1 Series, 5 Series and 6 Series. See the hotted-up 3er for yourself in the gallery above, and click below for a whole smattering of details in BMW's press release.Continue reading BMW debuts M Performance add-ons for 3 SeriesBMW debuts M Performance add-ons for 3 Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 15:29:00 EST. Filed under: Performance, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Fiat Customization programs are nothing new in the auto industry. For a fee, they offer a chance to work directly with the manufacturer to create a one-of-a-kind vehicle for the customer. These programs, however, are usually offered by makers of the most exotic, expensive and exclusive vehicles, like Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and Porsche. It's not often that a manufacturer of, shall we say, a more humble stature, offers this type of vehicle personalization. Nevertheless, that's exactly what Fiat is doing with its "Fuori Serie" program. The Italian automaker's new personalization program is being offered only for Abarth models, and is represented at the Paris Motor Show by the Fiat 500 Abarth Fuori Serie, a stunning reinterpretation of the Fiat Abarth 131 Mirafiori "Olio Fiat" livery that debuted at the 1976 Monte Carlo Rally. The matte yellow-and-blue colors of the livery are the most striking aspect of the car, but walking around it reveals other details like a hood that features a NACA duct on one side and louvered vent on the other, the highly polished wheels with yellow center caps that match the painted Brembo brake calipers, and lastly, the special "Fuori Serie" and "695" badging. Along with colors and finishes, Fuori Serie vehicles also get a special 180-horsepower tune of Abarth's 1.4-liter turbo that normally leaves the factory with 160 hp. The 500 Abarth Fuori Serie is just one example of what a customer can create using Fiat's new program, which starts by choosing one of two customization collections: Heritage or New Wave. The car you see here came from the Heritage collection, which draws its colors, materials and finishes from Fiat's motorsports exploits. The New Wave collection, meanwhile, draws inspiration from the "modern world." We're not quite sure what that means, but hopefully Fiat will show up at the next international auto show with another Fuori Serie car to explain.Continue reading 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Fuori Serie puts customization program on display2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Fuori Serie puts customization program on display originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 15:00:00 EST. Paris: 2013 Audi SQ5 is the first S diesel [w/video]
Filed under: Performance, SUV, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Audi, Diesel, LuxuryAudi is a company synonymous with diesel performance. Its efforts at the 24 Hours of Le Mans have repeatedly proven what can be accomplished with a healthy oil-burner at your command, but until now, buyers were unable to pick up spots-oriented models with a TDI badge. That's changed with the debut of the SQ5 TDI at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. As the first S model with a diesel engine, the crossover boasts 309 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The grunt gets to the ground via an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission and the company's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The combination can hustle the SQ5 to 62 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds. Engineers have dropped the chassis by 1.2 inches, bolted on a set of 20-inch wheels and stuffed the option sheet with a dynamic steering system. The base model starts at €58,500, though those with more money than functional synapses can cough up €92,000 for the SQ5 Exclusive. Each of the 50 examples will feature special Aral Blue paint outside as well as woven leather seats, special ash veneers and a slathering of Nappa leather indoors. Check out the full press release below.Continue reading 2013 Audi SQ5 is the first S diesel [w/video]2013 Audi SQ5 is the first S diesel [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 14:40:00 EST.

Paris: Venturi America is still awesome, still not coming to the U.S. [w/video]
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Paris Motor Show, UAW/Unions, Electric, Off-Road, MISC It's been two years since we first met the Venturi America on this very Paris Motor Show floor, and we're still in love with the idea of an electric car that is as capable on the street as it is on the trail. Venturi Automobiles says it is only making 100 of these door-less electric enduro cars, but despite its name, none of them are to be sold in the U.S. Venturi calls the America a "high-riding sports car," and on paper, we're willing to agree on both counts based on the car's looks and its specs. The styling of the America is what we might imagine a collaboration between Smart and Jeep, with the two-passenger car looking every bit the part of a modern street-legal dune buggy, right down to its ample ground clearance and open cockpit design. In terms of its performance, the Venturi-developed electric powertrain is said to produce 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is pretty great for a 3,100-pound car. There are also three driver-selectable modes (Cruising, Sport and Super Sport), so the car's dynamic settings allow the driver to choose between maximum driving range and maximum performance. Powered by a 53 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, the America has a driving a range of around 186 miles (presumably in Cruising mode) with a top speed of 124 miles per hour. Since we're likely never to see a Venture in America on our shores, you'll want to check out our image gallery and the video of the live reveal below. If nothing else, the latter will give you the chance to brush up on your French.Continue reading Venturi America is still awesome, still not coming to the U.S. [w/video]Venturi America is still awesome, still not coming to the U.S. [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 14:01:00 EST.
