El jefe de Renault ha confirmado, en declaraciones a Autocar, que la marca del rombo está a un paso de cerrar el acuerdo para la fabricación del Alpine con un "proveedor externo y británico". Las opciones se reducen a dos: Caterham o Lotus, y por lo que te hemos venido comentando por filtraciones previas, parece que será la marca de Hethel la agraciada con el contrato. Dice Tavares que "no es que no sepamos hacer un coche como el Alpine", sino que con el presupuesto que tenían disponible (unos 50 millones de euros, cuenta), su equipo de desarrollo no podría lanzar un producto a la altura de lo que exige la mítica marca de Dieppe. Es por ello que el Alpine se lanzará "sobre la plataforma compartida con el fabricante que lo fabricará", cosa que nos suena y huele todavía más a Lotus Evora... Con lo que se ahorrarán costes de desarrollo de un chasis propio. Tavares ha dejado entrever que a lo largo del Salón de París (la rueda de prensa de la marca empieza en media hora), podría producirse el anuncio oficial. Así que en tres cuartos de hora podríamos contarte esto de manera oficial. Después de causarnos un daño mental semi-permanente con el EXP 9 F, parece que Bentley está dispuesta a enmendar sus travesuras "pro-asiáticas" a través de este coche de carreras, cuya carrocería recuerda a la del Continental GT, diseñado bajo las normas que imperan en GT3: "cambia todo lo que te deje la FIA para hacer un coche competitivo". Respecto a la variante civil de este mismo coche, el de carreras pierde la friolera de una tonelada completa de peso. Es normal, ya que aquí se conserva muy poco del original, empleando paneles de carrocería de composite, tracción exclusivamente trasera, y un paquete aerodinámico que lo deja algo "macarrilla", tal vez incluso demasiado para un Bentley, que esperaríamos que fuera "verde inglés". Durante 2013 el coche verá un programa de evaluación y desarrollo en diversas carreras que, según la marca, incluirán competiciones de 24 horas, sin concretar más. Puedes esperar verlo en las 24 Horas de Spa Francorchamps y las de Nürburgring. Si el desarrollo es satisfactorio, Bentley espera poder venderlo a equipos privados. Una participación en Le Mans para 2014 no está descartada, siempre que las normas de la prueba gala se abran hacia los GT3 para hacerlos competitivos (actualmente, si no corres con un GTE es imposible ganar). Pues bien, en la gala "pre-salón" del Grupo Volkswagen pudimos encontrarnos con el nuevo compacto de Martorell en primera persona, ampliar la galería de fotos con nuevas instantáneas y hacernos con un vídeo, que te hemos dejado tras el salto, del coche en movimiento por la ciudad de Barcelona. ¿Conclusiones? Pues, como suele ser habitual, el coche gana fuera de las fotos, y lo hace bastante. La gente de SEAT presentó el coche como un "nuevo lenguaje de diseño puro y preciso, que refleja la ingeniería de la marca". Y la verdad es que se ve una evolución hacia un producto más maduro, aunque también algo más soso. La pasión se guarda para el SC de tres puertas por el momento. Con todo presentado, y sin más datos nuevos que ofrecerte, te dejamos con las nuevas fotos y los dos nuevos vídeos del compacto de SEAT. Así nos hemos quedado tras ver en persona al F-Type de Jaguar, que ayer ya prometía mucho en las filtraciones e instantáneas oficiales, o en su genial vídeo promocional (que por si te lo has perdido, te lo hemos vuelto a dejar caer tras el salto). Pero una cosa es el mundo digital, y otra el mundo real. Así que cuando delante de nuestros objetivos réflex cayó esta escultural carrocería cabrio no pudimos hacer otra cosa que rendirnos ante la genialidad de Ian Callum y su equipo. Y eso que el modelo que nos mostraban tenía un problemilla de acabado en los faros, que se empañaron por la humedad parisina (como puedes ver en las fotos). Da igual, se le perdona, es una unidad prototipo de pre producción. Aunque en el Musée Rodin, donde se nos mostró el coche, había un E-Type para abrir boca y levantar la comparación con la recuperación del concepto de deportivo ligero, Ian Callum aseguró que la compañía no quería remover las cenizas de los muertos, y por eso apostó por proporciones clásicas pero un diseño moderno, anti-retro en muchos aspectos. ¿Resultado? Auburn Hills keeps a ready eye on what their rivals in Dearborn and Detroit are doing, and vice-versa. Today, that battle is renewed with the introduction of Ram's 2013 Heavy Duty and Chassis Cab lines at the State Fair of Texas. Why a state fair? The Banner State is the perfect battleground for pickup supremacy, as Texas accounts for one of every five pickups sold in the U.S. Towing and hauling metrics are poised for a substantial improvement. On the HD front, Chrysler is boasting that its brand-new heavies will bring best-in-class towing, torque, payload and Gross Combined Weight Rating, but thus far, it's declining to cite what those figures are. For the moment, though, Fred Diaz, President and CEO of Ram told us at an Auburn Hills background event earlier this month that key towing and hauling metrics are poised for a substantial improvement. "And not just by a little bit. I think we're going to shock the world," said Diaz. Visually, not much has changed over the outgoing models - Ram customers told Chrysler not to mess with their distinctive drop-shoulder look. On 2500 and 3500 HD models there's a new, taller grille, which necessitated a new hood as well. SLT trims and above receive LED corner lamps and certain models receive LED taillamps as well. Other changes include redesigned wheel choices, a new power fold mirror design and - to show you how carefully automakers think about intended use - redesigned badges on the bodyside. Why? Because the new "portrait-style" badges better accommodate the signage that many commercial truck buyers add to their doors. But far more important than stinkin' badges for work trucks is what's underneath, and to that end, there are some significant changes to report from the House of Ram. For 2013, HD models get essentially all-new frames with wider front rails to accommodate new suspension design geometry. Front suspension on the 3500 goes to a three-link design to accommodate heavier loads and weighty front-mounted accessories like snow plows. Por ahora no sabemos cómo será para el mercado europeo, pero en México ya ha sido presentado. El nuevo Fluence presume de una estética menos anodina y aburrida. Los cambios realizados en el frontal hacen que tenga una apariencia más dinámica y en cierto modo, también agresiva. Para ello estrena paragolpes, ópticas y parrilla. En la zaga sin embargo las modificaciones han sido menores y cuesta reconocerlas. Algo parecido pasa en el interior y salvo la instrumentación digital, pocas novedades encontramos. Resulta curioso que antes de que hayan presentado incluso las imágenes oficiales, los chicos de Renault México lo muestren en un vídeo promocional -que encontrarás tras el salto-. Ford is using the occasion for two major announcements, the first being that the F-150's standard 3.7-liter engine can now pull a class-leading 6,700 pounds. That's 200 pounds more than the 2013 Ram 1500 and its 3.7-liter V6, and a whopping 1,300 more than the Chevy Silverado when powered by General Motors' 4.3-liter V6. The second announcement is the debut of the 2013 F-150 King Ranch. The King Ranch has been offered by Ford since 2000 when the Blue Oval and the very large, very old and very much still in operation Texas-based King Ranch partnered up, making this year's model the 12th edition. The 2013 F-150 King Ranch features its own version of the truck's new three-bar grille, and its two-tone exterior can be complemented with optional 20-inch machined aluminum wheels. Buyers can also opt for monochrome paint, HID headlamps, as well as a unique King Ranch chrome package. The interior features all of the latest Ford tech, including MyFord Touch and ambient lighting, and can be ordered in the King Ranch's trademark Adobe colors or black. Entre ellas está el BlueMotion Concept que aquí te mostramos. La versión más verde y ecológica del compacto tiene toda la pinta de estar más cerca de la producción de lo que los chicos de Volkswagen nos quieren hacer creer con el apellido "Concept". Estéticamente recibe las modificaciones necesarias para mejorar la aerodinámica. De ahí que buena parte de las entradas de aire frontales hayan sido selladas y las llantas de aleación estén casi "cerradas". | Posted: 26 Sep 2012 06:26 PM PDT  Motor Trend declares victor in epic BMW 3 Series versus Cadillac ATS battle Filed under: Sedan, Videos, BMW, Cadillac, Luxury Although many cars have tried, few have come even close to the capabilities exhibited by the BMW 3 Series. But the Caddilac ATS is a promising small sedan that could very well play spoiler to the most successful sports sedan on the globe. We've sampled both the ATS and the newest 3 Series, but Motor Trend had the chance to get both sport sedans together to test them out in its latest "Head 2 Head" video. Right off the bat, M/T points out just how close these cars are in just about every category from size to weight to performance when comparing the 328i and ATS 2.0T variants. All of the dimensions are within just inches of each other and Cadillac's weight-conscious construction of the ATS makes it just 24 pounds heavier than the 328i. Both cars use turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 engine, and while on paper the ATS delivers more horsepower and torque, M/T points out that BMW is known for underrating its engines and estimates true output to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 270+ horsepower. On the track, the BMW barely edges out the Cadillac in 0-60 and 1/4-mile times, but for a true comparison of how the ATS stacks up, M/T's Jonny Lieberman puts both cars through their paces along some of California's best back roads. Surprisingly, with "sharper and crisper" steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the ATS seemed to be more impressive along the twisty roads than the BMW, but both cars' biggest downfall was their manual transmissions. The shifter of the ATS exhibited a couple of issues that could seriously hamper performance, including a "ghost detent" when shifting into second gear and the need to double shift into gears, and Jonny really had nothing nice to say about the BMW's shifter or throttle response, either. We're not going to play spoiler here, because regardless of which car is victorious in this head-to-head comparison, it's clear that driving enthusiasts are the true winners. No spoiler here, folks. | Posted: 26 Sep 2012 05:20 PM PDT Video: Motor Trend declares victor in epic BMW 3 Series versus Cadillac ATS battle Filed under: Sedan, Videos, BMW, Cadillac, Luxury Although many cars have tried, few have come even close to the capabilities exhibited by the BMW 3 Series. But the Caddilac ATS is a promising small sedan that could very well play spoiler to the most successful sports sedan on the globe. We've sampled both the ATS and the newest 3 Series, but Motor Trend had the chance to get both sport sedans together to test them out in its latest "Head 2 Head" video. Right off the bat, M/T points out just how close these cars are in just about every category from size to weight to performance when comparing the 328i and ATS 2.0T variants. All of the dimensions are within just inches of each other and Cadillac's weight-conscious construction of the ATS makes it just 24 pounds heavier than the 328i. Both cars use turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 engine, and while on paper the ATS delivers more horsepower and torque, M/T points out that BMW is known for underrating its engines and estimates true output to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 270+ horsepower. On the track, the BMW barely edges out the Cadillac in 0-60 and 1/4-mile times, but for a true comparison of how the ATS stacks up, M/T's Jonny Lieberman puts both cars through their paces along some of California's best back roads. Surprisingly, with "sharper and crisper" steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the ATS seemed to be more impressive along the twisty roads than the BMW, but both cars' biggest downfall was their manual transmissions. The shifter of the ATS exhibited a couple of issues that could seriously hamper performance, including a "ghost detent" when shifting into second gear and the need to double shift into gears, and Jonny really had nothing nice to say about the BMW's shifter or throttle response, either. We're not going to play spoiler here, because regardless of which car is victorious in this head-to-head comparison, it's clear that driving enthusiasts are the true winners. No spoiler here, folks. | Posted: 26 Sep 2012 04:45 PM PDT  Superchargers will only work on Model S (for now) and every future Tesla EV Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors There were a lot of details left out of the late-night unveiling of the Tesla Supercharger network earlier this week. Sure, Tesla CEO Elon Musk explained the big picture, saying the Supercharger network is "the answer to the three major problems holding back electric vehicles." Those problems? Long-distance EV driving, the "long tailpipe" argument and how much it costs to produce electricity. But how big of an impact can your fancy charging station have if it only works with a small fraction of the EVs on the market? "The reason Supercharging is available only for Model S and not others (including Roadster) is that Model S was developed with Supercharging in mind." Right now, the Superchargers can only charge up a Model S, despite the fact that these stations will be built at the perfect locations to offer Level 2 or DC fast charge options for other plug-in vehicles as well. Tesla spokesperson Christina Ra tells AutoblogGreen that non-Tesla options do not exist today, but they are "being considered, as always." That said, Ra confirmed that every future Tesla vehicle will be Supercharger compatible. So, Model X and next-gen Roadster drivers, don't worry. We asked if there has been any discussion of licensing the Supercharger technology to other OEMs (Daimler and Toyota would be the most obvious potential partners, since Tesla is already providing battery packs for some of their EVs). Ra said, "The reason Supercharging is available only for Model S and not others (including Roadster) is that Model S was developed with Supercharging in mind, so the capabilities are built into the battery and hardware. Time could definitely resolve compatibility." Each Supercharger station costs around $250,000 to install and can charge - for free, remember - either four or six cars at a time. Since Tesla plans to build 100 in the next three to four years, the total cost will be around $20-$30 million. The six chargers that have already been built in secret in California (in Barstow, Hawthorne, Lebec, Coalinga, Gilroy and Folsom) are all operational now, but not yet open to the public. Ra said Tesla needs to get government approval to open them, and that will come "soon." Currently, there are only two Supercharger stations that have batteries (to store solar energy, we assume), the ones in Lebec and Barstow. The plan is to install batteries at all Superchargers, though, as well as make them all solar-powered. "The vision is absolutely solar-powered," Ra tells AutoblogGreen. How efficient does this seventh-generation Golf need to be to reach this grandiose claim? It burns 3.2 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers. That's the equivalent of 73.5 U.S. miles per gallon (on the European cycle). VW says the car has 15-percent improved fuel economy compared to the previous model. We say it's yummy. The Golf BlueMotion uses VW's new 1.6-litre TDI turbodiesel engine that offers 108 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque - enough so that it can skedaddle on up to 125 miles per hour. It's lighter than older Golfs, has stop-start with battery regen, still seats five and will be available in Europe in the summer of 2013. The new Golf BlueMotion is also slipperier, with a drag coefficient of just 0.27 thanks to a lower chassis, underbody panels, partially closed off air inlets and other aero upgrades. While the car seen here is technically still a concept, the production car will be made available in two trim lines, Trendline and Comfortline. Trendline is the base version and comes with either two or four doors, a dust and pollen filter and a five-inch touchscreen. The Comfortline model gets "a more exclusive instrument cluster," 16-inch alloy wheels and ParkPilot proximity sensors front and rear. VW has even come up with this quirky little tidbit: The Gold BlueMotion has a 50-liter (13.2-gallon) tank - enough for a theoretical range of 1,562 km. If the average driver goes 15,000 kilometers (9,300 miles) a year, they "will only have to refuel this Volkswagen ten times per year." Those numbers are a little low for this side of the Atlantic, but it's unlikely we'll get the Golf BlueMotion here, anyway. Well, the Mini Countryman John Cooper Works is just that sweet spot in the company's Venn diagram of "huggable performance" and "all-wheel drive." The company has just announced pricing for its spectacularly named John Cooper Works Countryman Cooper S ALL4 (phew!), and the cost of entry starts at rather dear $35,550. Though Mini doesn't specify if if destination charges are included (usually $700 for other models), it is general practice for the brand to include it in its pricing. For that $35.5K, you get a turbocharged 1.6-liter four with 208-horsepower and 198 pound-feet of torque, 18-inch alloys, sports seats, a lower and firmer sport suspension, and of course the All4 all-wheel-drive system. Fun fact: This is the first-ever AWD model ever to wear JCW livery. While Mini does not list options prices for the JCW Countryman, they are sure to be plentiful. For the sake of comparison, the JCW Clubman stars at $33,000, and when fitted with features like racing stripes, customized mirrors, heated Recaro front seats, Bluetooth, navigation, sport suspension, and other goodies, the price can jump upwards of $5,000, and that's before adding a typical Mini assortment of cheeky accessories and plug-in doodads.
