Continue reading ¿En qué se equivocó PSA?¿En qué se equivocó PSA? originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 03:30:00 EST. McLaren P1 Concept showt zijn enorme vleugel
Hele snelle auto's hebben hele grote vleugels nodig.
Say what you want, Chevy Volt outselling half the cars in U.S.
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Chevrolet It's like having a ringside seat without having to shell out for the tickets. The Christian Science Monitor is the latest to weigh on the perceived "success" or "failure" of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in hybrid, and we can now add that publication to the list of those that consider the car a "success." Truth be told, the CSM had a tailwind here, as its editorial was written by John Voelcker of Green Car Reports, who called out some other publications, notably Forbes, for blasting the vehicle and the way General Motors promotes it.As was pointed out by an AutoblogGreen reader recently, through August, the Volt has outsold about half of the approximately 260 light-duty vehicle models available in the U.S., including the BMW 7-series, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Lexus RX 400h and CT 200h hybrids. In fact, the Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid were the only alt-fuel vehicles to outsell the Volt. So, if the Volt is a flop, then so are half the vehicles on dealers lots right now. Last week, a Forbes piece said GM is manipulating its sales numbers. Forbes contributor Patrick Michaels accused GM of "giving away rent-a-Volts" to inflate the Volt's sales numbers to a record high 2,831 units last month. Michaels also alluded to recent reports that the Department of Defense will buy 1,500 Volts, calling such a purchase a "scam" by the U.S. government. We breathlessly await GM's September sales figures for the Volt, which is due out next week. And the ensuing rhetoric, of course.Say what you want, Chevy Volt outselling half the cars in U.S. originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 20:26:00 EST. Report: Tesla curbs forecast due to Model S issues, losses total $864.9M
Filed under: Sedan, Government/Legal, Technology, Earnings/Financials, Tesla, Electric It ain't easy creating a brand-new automaker from scratch. The fact that Elon Musk and Tesla have actually been able to bring not one, but two cars to market is in itself quite impressive. That said, the road has not been without its bumps, and Tesla is feeling some of the setbacks that come with being a fledgling automaker. To that end, Tesla has revealed that it expects $400 million to $440 million in full-year revenue, or roughly $160 million less than its prior 2012 revenue forecasts. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Monday, the electric carmaker said "We have methodically increased our Model S production at a slower rate than we had earlier anticipated," leading to the company figuring they'll fall short of the $560 million to $600 million they originally forecasted. Tesla also revealed a net cumulative loss of $864.9 million through June 30 of this year - Tesla has yet to break even as an automaking entity, but it remains something of a startup, so the fact that it has lost money to this point shouldn't be a major surprise - building cars is expensive, and learning how to do so is even more expensive. Following the disclosure, Tesla shares fell about 8.5 percent this morning in trading. Tesla cites delays in suppliers for its Model S production shortcomings. The California automaker says it is working with suppliers to speed up deliveries and internally, it is adding shifts and automation to its manufacturing processes. With little more than half of the 5,000-vehicle target expected to be built by year's end, Tesla says it is four to five weeks behind its delivery goals. Meanwhile, reservations are on the rise. 11,500 Model S units were spoken for at the end of June, and that number has risen to 13,000 as of September 23 (not counting vehicles already delivered). While reservations increased, so did cancelations. The first several thousand reserved customers were asked to configure their vehicles for delivery, lest they lose their places in line.Tesla curbs forecast due to Model S issues, losses total $864.9M originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 19:15:00 EST. Report: Yes, Virginia, there is a DMV board who decides what you can't put on a license plate
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Humor From the current issue of Car and Driver comes an interesting piece on personalized license plates, and how they are reviewed for suitability. In particular, it focuses on the process exemplified by the Word Committee, which is a board created by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles tasked with approving custom plates. Many other states have similar boards or processes, but VA's is said to be one of the most thorough. C/D spoke with Word Committee member Melanie Stokes to get a better understanding how their system works. The WC is made up of 20 DMV employees with a mix of diverse ethnic backgrounds and ages. The group meets once a month to review plate applications that have been deemed questionable or offensive. Apparently, the board does not use resources like Google or Urban Dictionary, claiming that their decisions are made "based on what a reasonable person would think when seeing the plate." It should be noted that, in light of their efforts, the plate "EATTHE" was initially deemed acceptable on a special charity plate which featured "Kids First" at the bottom. The plate gained national attention, only to later be recalled. The clever plate proves that no matter how thorough the efforts, some creatively questionable plates will slip through.Yes, Virginia, there is a DMV board who decides what you can't put on a license plate originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 18:29:00 EST. Report: Ecclestone claims contract torn up for Grand Prix of America
Filed under: Motorsports, Earnings/Financials Another day, another drama with Bernie Ecclestone at the center. This time, it appears that the the Formula One CEO and the series' top brass have "torn up" the contract for New Jersey's Grand Prix of America. In a new report from The Guardian, Ecclestone claims that the race's organizers have missed deadlines, leading to the scrapping of the race. The main concern since the announcement of the New Jersey race in October of last year has been its financials - that is, the ability for event organizers to raise the necessary funds to put on the race. While construction has begun on the circuit, a motorsports industry insider told the Guardian in the report, "pricing for sponsorship etc. is unrealistic and not obtainable in the current market." Such high pricing could be motivated by the massive fees associated with hosting an F1 race. The ten-year contract for Grand Prix of America would have been for £150 million ($193.9 million USD) and an annual estimated fee of £15 million ($19.3 million). The 2013 provisional calendar for F1 showed the New Jersey race as subject to confirmation, and a lack of commitment to the race may have also scared away sponsors. The Guardian says dissolution of the contract is a "big blow to F1." Ecclestone is reportedly moving on, looking for new suitors including a GP in Mexico. Ecclestone tells the Guardian, "After Mexico, we want to go to South Africa." The Grand Prix of America, which was to take place on a 3.2-mile street course on the New Jersey side of the Hudson river was set for June of 2013. It appears that now that the United States Grand Prix is locked in for in Austin, Texas, New Jersey may well be passed over altogether.Ecclestone claims contract torn up for Grand Prix of America originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 17:44:00 EST. Consumer Reports says Fisker Karma has 'numerous shortcomings'
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Fisker It's not a surprise that Consumer Reports doesn't like the Fisker Karma. The tester vehicle that the magazine straight-up purchased died before it went 200 miles. Then CR really figured out what was wrong with the plug-in hybrid. So, is it really a surprise that CR's test results found the $107,000 Karma to have "numerous shortcomings" and "fell well short" of expectations? Enough of each, in fact, to earn a "failing grade." It's a brutal review, and one that goes beyond problems with a single vehicle. No, CR says the Karma has: poor dash controls, limited visibility, a cramped interior, awkward access into and out of the seats, an engine that is noisy when running, long battery recharge times, and a small backseat and trunk. The Karma's heavy, SUV-like weight affects agility and performance, and the Karma lacks the oomph you would expect. So, yeah. Fisker had a response ready, pointing out the good parts of the review, like the "outstanding ride, handling and braking." In the CR video, which you can watch below, reviewer Tom Mutchler does say nice things about those particular aspects, but the good is outweighed by the problems found with the fit and finish of the Karma. In the end he says the car "sacrifices way too much function for fashion." There's also this: Fisker says, "As the Karma is a concept car come to life, packaging and visibility will of course not be that of a minivan," which no one is asking for. Just a little common practicality. Fisker also says it plans to improve NVH and the touch screen. You can get an idea why those are important, in this video.Continue reading Consumer Reports says Fisker Karma has 'numerous shortcomings'Consumer Reports says Fisker Karma has 'numerous shortcomings' originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 17:02:00 EST. Report: Ford's J Mays feels vindicated by Fusion reception
Filed under: Car Buying, Aston Martin, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercury, Design/StyleIt's hard to think back now, but the same man overseeing the design of the 2013 Ford Fusion also presided over a rather lackluster period in Ford design, highlighted by vehicles like the Five Hundred and Freestyle. With the redesigned Fusion receiving high praise, J Mays tells Automotive News that he feels vindicated from criticisms suggesting he's not a daring enough designer. When Mays took over as lead of design in 1997, he admits to having quite an ego ("My head would barely fit through the door some days. I've long since gotten over myself") and the workload to match. With the Blue Oval's portfolio full of premium brands like Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo at that point, along with the bread-and-butter Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, Mays certainly had quite the challenge. It was in the mid-2000s that Mays took over just the premium brands, and took on the new title of Chief Creative Officer. At the time, Mays endured some criticism for looking backwards to retro styling, rather than setting a new standard for American car design - criticism that Mays says he is free from with the all-new Fusion. It's also significant to point out the big names in car design came through the doors of Ford's design house under Mays. Names like Ian Callum (now of Jaguar), and Henrik Fisker, who was then at Aston Martin but has now gone on to start his own carmaker. Mays, who spent time at BMW, Audi and Volkswagen told AN that American carmakers don't have to imitate Europe's luxury automakers to provide premium products (perhaps a bit ironic considering that even cheerleaders of the sedan admit the new Fusion has an awful lot of Aston Martin design language up front). While the Fusion has been well-received, Mays still has his hands full trying to maintain the "One Ford" global design language, matching that up with truck design, and finding an identity for Lincoln. All we can say is, it ain't easy being J Mays.Ford's J Mays feels vindicated by Fusion reception originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 16:30:00 EST.
Gallery: Dahiatsu D-R Share TweetDahiatsu D-R, o el nuevo Copen originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 16:09:00 EST. 2013 Chevrolet Volt
Filed under: Hybrid, Hatchback, Chevrolet, Electric, Quick SpinsChevrolet has taken an aggressive tack to move units of its revolutionary Volt, selling a fair number to government agencies, offering really fantastic lease deals and marketing the hell out of the car. After a week of driving (and generally enjoying) the 2013 iteration of the extended-range hatchback, I tend to think that customers should just take advantage of the current confluence of market forces rather than bemoaning the larger state of affairs with General Motors as a whole. After all, one of the biggest knocks on the Volt has always been that its MSRP is too high, a fact that largely negates the very low running costs once the car is in your garage. Well, a $260/month lease eases that pain a lot (even if that rate is for the 2012 car, and not the 2013 model that I tested). And what you're left with is a very nice-to-drive, forward-looking if fractionally flawed car.Driving Notes The slightly revised 2013 Volt offers a "Hold" driving mode that allows one to conserve the battery power for optimal efficiency. For those that have long commutes - and might want to let the gasoline-powered generator do its thing on the highway while saving the EV juice for around town - this new software makes a lot of sense. I didn't find much chance to make use of it, in my city-centric daily errands. I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is, I will admit, fairly progressive as far as Middle America goes. That said, our city has recently been fitted with a large number of 240-volt stations in parking lots and parking structures. Driving the Volt primarily around town (I live about a mile from the city center) for the week, I was able to keep my charge going using these sometimes-free chargers to great effect. In fact, I got more juice from Republic Parking than I did from my own house. Cheers! When the Volt's batteries were topped-up, I usually saw about 32-miles worth of charge on the car's central display. Over eight days of driving - no single trip was farther than 15 miles, one of the benefits of working from home - I used 0.1 gallons of gas for around 120-miles traveled. So, I'll admit, the usage-case for me is a little bit different than normal. But general observation, logic and some quick statistics hunting tells me that more and more people will work out of home offices as time passes. Long story short: I could almost certainly use a car like the Volt without having to use the gas-powered generator/engine for two-thirds of my driving year. And that's being conservative. Better still, if I'm charger surfing, using public power or parking structure power to fill up, the individual cost to me is reduced even further. The Volt is an exceptional vehicle for music lovers, even without some ultra-high-end 38-speaker English sound system. Why? Number one: The audio system is pretty respectable. Number two: The car is simply so quiet, even at speed, that you have a better soundstage in the Volt than you do in pretty much any other car on the market. You don't truly realize how much even very good audio setups are fighting car-based noise pollution until you jam out in a Volt for the first time. The front lip, completely designed for maximum aero aid, makes the Chevy almost unusable in certain situations. The approach from the street to my driveway is not particularly steep, but it's a sharp enough angle that there is no way to get the car up and down without rubbing the bottom of the lip on the concrete. I know that in my neighborhood - with houses from the 1940s and 1950s - most driveways are more aggressively raked than mine, too. Anyone living in an older part of a town or city may have to consider if they can drive the Volt close enough to their garage or house to charge it without damaging the car each time. Aero be damned, it's silly for the Volt to sit lower than most supercars. A quick followup to the point above: Get used to hand-washing your Volt if you take the plunge. I don't know of any automatic conveyor-type car washes with tire guide rails low enough to accommodate the front lip of this car. 2013 Chevrolet Volt originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 15:00:00 EST. 2013 Audi A3 Sportback e-Gas Project shows off carbon-neutral fuel
Filed under: Europe, Technology, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Audi, LuxuryAudi has revealed its 2013 A3 Sportback in Munich ahead of the model's official debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show later this week, and Autoblog was on hand for the early unveiling. Like its three-door cousin, the third-generation five-door wears subtly evolved styling inside and out as well as a longer wheelbase, more interior room and a commendable weight savings of around 198 pounds over its predecessor. This particular model wears the line's optional LED headlamps and features a bi-fuel powertrain as part of the Audi e-Gas project. The exercise uses electrolysis to generate hydrogen, which is then combined with carbon dioxide to create methane, or natural gas. The result is what Audi is calling a "carbon-neutral" fuel. Since compressed natural gas stations can be few and far between, however, the A3 also makes use of a 13-gallon gasoline tank to help give the machine an effective range of around 745 miles. The 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine features injectors for both natural gas and gasoline and can seamlessly switch between the two fuels while driving. After perusing our high-res image gallery, you can take a look at the full press release on the 2013 Audi A3 Sportback below.Continue reading 2013 Audi A3 Sportback e-Gas Project shows off carbon-neutral fuel2013 Audi A3 Sportback e-Gas Project shows off carbon-neutral fuel originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 15:44:00 EST.
