Ayer por la noche tuvo lugar el evento de presentación, y en él el CEO de la compañía californiana dio a conocer un sistema de cargadores capaces de proporcionar hasta 120 kW de potencia. El resultado es un cargador que puede alimentar a un Model S en 30 minutos con energía suficiente como para cubrir con ella unos 300 kilómetros. La idea de Musk es ofrecer una red de supercargadores de este tipo en las vías principales y carreteras más transitadas, para facilitar que aquellos propietarios del Model S puedan realizar viajes largos sin perder tiempo con cargadores lentos convencionales. Recordemos que el Model S tiene una autonomía inicial de 483 kilómetros, por lo que una vez consumidos (unas cuatro horas de viaje) tendríamos que parar media hora para recargar y poder alcanzar 783 kilómetros de distancia, una cifra que es suficiente para la gran mayoría de viajeros. Por el momento se han instalado seis supercargadores en una de las arterias principales de transporte de California. El coche había aparecido en los fotos de TeamSpeed, de donde ha sido "convenientemente eliminado". Pero nuestros amigos de Autoblog.nl estuvieron rápidos, y grabaron todas las fotos en su servidor. The livestream can be seen here, and we've got the first official release about the network below. Here are the details - as we know them - of the "Free! Solar! Energy!" from the headline: The first six Supercharger stations have already been built - under complete secrecy in various locations in California - and now "will allow [higher-end] Model S to travel long distances with ultra fast charging throughout California, parts of Nevada and Arizona." The high-speed charging system is only compatible on Models S version with an 85-kWh (where the necessary Supercharger bits are standard) or 60-kWh (optional) battery packs. The electricity "used by the Supercharger comes from a solar carport system provided by SolarCity, which results in almost zero marginal energy cost after installation." Tesla even says each Supercharger will generate more solar energy than the Tesla vehicles will use, resulting in "a slight net positive transfer of sunlight generated power back to the electricity grid." This point is apparently important enough to repeat: "Supercharger system will always generate more power from sunlight than Model S customers use for driving." More Supercharger locations are coming to other, "high-traffic" parts of the U.S. "by next year" and will be installed in Europe and Asia starting in late 2013. Superchargers can fill up a Model S with three hours of driving (at 60 miles per hour) in around 30 minutes. The charger currently provides "almost 100 kilowatts" of power, but could be reconfigured to 120 kW down the road. We knew some of these things based on discussions with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and other sources. There will be more details ferreted out in the coming weeks, but at first blush, this looks exactly like we'd expect a Tesla charging product to be: big, brash and beyond expectations. | Posted: 24 Sep 2012 05:21 PM PDT  Video: Russian trucks crash into each other, one driver nails the dismount Filed under: Safety, Work, Russia After an accident, most of us are left scratching our heads as to what we do next, but the guy pictured above is probably scratching his head wondering how he's still alive. Captured from the dashcam of this Russian driver, a massive collision between two big rigs shows that while seatbelts definitely save lives, sometimes it doesn't hurt to have luck (make that a lot of luck) on your side, too. It isn't clear if the truck in front of our camera was trying to squeeze into a left turn, execute a passing maneuver or simply or simply trying to avoid a stopped truck in the road, but either way, there wasn't enough room. The result was this blue truck slamming into the side of the turning truck at a pretty good clip. This truck driver, obviously not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected out of the cab through the windshield, but more impressive/amazing is the fact that ends up sticking the landing in a way that might leave Gabby Douglas or Aly Raisman feeling a little jealous. While we can't say for sure whether or not this driver suffered any injuries, we sure hope he learned his lesson and buckles up in the future. After that, when drivers get behind the wheel, the examinations get a lot harder. Ten-hour-per-day cramming sessions have been held at the Nardo test circuit and, again, the Nürburgring to tweak performance aspects like handling at VMax, cooling, track DSC and the e-diff.Jaguar says the F-Type is a "thoroughbred enthusiast sports car," and after all the years we've been waiting for it, the company doesn't want to be wrong. The two videos below, "Fierce" and "Focused," take high-speed looks at what is going into the convertible cat, and we even see the needle swing past 170 mph. The study was put together by Ian Rockett, a professor of epidemiology at West Virginia University, and the findings point out that, while deaths from car crashes are on the decline over the last decade, suicide deaths are on the rise. According to Rockett, "Suicides are undercounted; I think the problem is much worse than official data would lead us to believe." Rockett's study employed data from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics for injury death causes from 2000 to 2009. In that time, deaths related to car crashes declined by 25 percent, while suicide rose by 15 percent. Over that same period, deaths from poisoning rose 128 percent, leading to Rockett's assertion of underreporting of suicides. Rockett noted that many poisoning deaths may actually be intentional prescription drug overdoses, leading to that drastic increase. Though the article focuses on the circumstances regarding increases in suicide, the 25-percent decline in automobile deaths is worth noting. Many factors can play into that figure, including the wealth of new passive and active safety features, as well as the number of older vehicles taken off the road by Cash for Clunkers. Additionally, there have been some reports that fewer 16-year olds are getting their licenses, and more people are driving less due to rising costs associated with motoring. As it turns out though - and as we are amply reminded by the ceaseless wonders of eBay Motors - the 1988 Mitsubishi Galant Sigma was moving the needle in terms of interior design, at least.In this meticulously well-documented example, you'll see that the Sigma had it going on as far as steering-wheel accessible controls. Though not actually mounted on the wheel itself, as has become the dominant layout, the Galant designers put all of the highest-use functions within a finger's reach, through the huge aperture of the one-spoke wheel. Most notable here is the turn-signal stalk, which protrudes out through the steering wheel, defying convention, logic and indeed, crashworthiness in a flourish that can only be described as "sort of French." Buy a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Ger ready to have AAA EV roadside assistance on speed dial. Use a battery trailer hooked to the back of your car like the EV Mobile Charger or the new ebuggy. For EV shoppers and owners interested in trying out a battery trailer, ebuggy is offering an on-demand solution. The Stuttgart, Germany-based company has specially-designed ebuggy Stations at existing gas stations and rest stops. The trailer can be towed at speeds of up to 62 miles per hour. Billing is based on the amount of energy used per month by the customer. After a user registers, they're sent a kit for upgrading their car to the ebuggy system - with a tow hitch, power socket and in-car display that must be fitted to the car. Once set up, the customer can hitch up to a fully charged trailer at a nearby ebuggy Station when they need more range. Being the auto-obsessive types, naturally we're most curious to see what the future holds for automobiles. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers thinks it knows what kinds of cars we'll be driving in 2040, or, rather, what kinds of cars will be driving us. "[IEEE members have] selected autonomous vehicles as the most promising form of intelligent transportation, anticipating that they will account for up to 75 percent of cars on the road by the year 2040." That's right, folks. According to this panel of experts, by 2040 we'll be leaving our homes (in the sky) and settling comfortably into the recliners of our autonomous automobiles. May as well take a nap, eh? After all, there won't be any traffic lights to contend with, says IEEE. Think that's something? The Fiesta ST in Europe gets 177 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of twist from its 1.6-liter EcoBoost four. Just because it's testing on Loveland Pass doesn't mean it will go on sale in the States, but nevertheless, we're going to go the optimistic route and assume that the amount of smoke still swirling around the tuned Fiesta over the past year has got to lead to fire. En su interior, casi 60 km de carreteras que simulan hasta 67 tipos diferentes de condiciones de conducción. Cuenta además con más de 23.000 m2 de talleres. El nuevo circuito está situado a unos 200 km de Shanghai. Pronto, las instalaciones verificarán las puesta a punto y el desarrollo de vehículos para las varias marcas que dependen de GM en China, como Buick, Cadillac, Baojun y Jiefan, entre otras. Las instalaciones servirán también para la homologación y certificación de vehículos bajo la supervisión de PATAC y Shanghai. | Posted: 24 Sep 2012 01:53 PM PDT  Rumormill: Cheaper baby NSX back under consideration at Acura Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Coupe, Performance, Acura, Honda, Rumormill Back in the salad days before the financial upheaval of 2008, Honda's Acura division was reportedly planning to build not one, but two new NSX models. The first was/is the on again off again heir to the NSX throne (then a V10 rear-drive supercar, now the much ballyhooed hybrid all-wheel-drive affair revealed at January's Detroit Auto Show). The second was to be a smaller, less expensive version, creatively dubbed by Honda internals as the "Small NSX." Never let engineers name your pets, folks. In any event, the Small NSX that was said to be cancelled before we even knew it existed is reportedly back on the table. Unnamed sources tell Motor Trend that the sports car will really be a scaled-back version of the NSX, too, with a mid-engine layout and potentially a version the same hybrid SH-AWD system. It is really anyone's guess as to which corporate powertrain will offer motivation, should this baby NSX see the light of day, though turbocharging one of the company's four-cylinder mills seems like a good bet. With the full-boat NSX still on track for a debut in 2015, expect to wait quite a while before the junior version is available - 2017 is a reasonable guess.
