| Posted: 22 Sep 2012 05:14 PM PDT  Video: Ten original Silver Arrows assemble at the 2012 Goodwood Revival Filed under: Classics, Videos, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, UK, Racing The Earl of March, the man responsible for the Goodwood Revival, said he's been trying to get all of the Silver Arrows race cars - those of Auto Union, now Audi Tradition, and Mercedes-Benz - to the event for 20 years. This year, the stars aligned. 2012 marked the 75th anniversary of the Silver Arrows arriving in the UK, and there have never been as many of the instantly recognizable winners in one place at the same time. Ten of them, to be specific. They weren't just there to sit in "the box," either, with drivers like Jackie Stewart, Jochen Mass and Karl Wendlinger throwing them around the Goodwood Circuit. For all of their Wagnerian pre-war thunder,at least one of them was apparently kinder than it sounded: Mass compared the handling of the Mercedes W25, with its over 400-horsepower 4.3-liter inline eight-cylinder, to a Volkswagen Beetle. A fanciful sibling to the Onxy hybrid supercar concept, the scooter looks as if it could have come straight from the Japanese anime, Akira. The Onyx scooter makes do with a bit less gumption than the 680-horsepower Onyx coupe. The three-wheeler's powertrain is a 400cc engine paired with an electric motor pushing a combined 60 horsepower and 43 pound-feet to the 17-inch rear wheel. In between the cockpit and the seat is a storage unit called the ClipBox. The scooter is in Sport Mode with the ClipBox affixed, the rider leaning against it to reach the handlebars, naturally pushing the feet into a more sportbike-like position. Remove the ClipBox and the Onyx goes into Urban Mode, a more traditional scooter configuration with an upright seating position. Peugeot says it's good for 30 miles of all-electric travel at 31 mph, or 310 miles if it uses the ICE. Se trata de una berlina muy importante para la marca que debería convertirse en un best-seller. Para ello se ha desarrollado un producto totalmente global y por eso es casi el mismo vehículo que en Europa veremos como Mondeo. La oferta inicial del Fusion 2013 estará formada por cinco variantes de acabado y dos motores. El más pequeño será el 2.5i 16v de 170 caballos y podrá combinarse con caja manual o automática. El 2.0 Ecoboost, que será el más potente por el momento, desarrolla 240 CV y siempre estará ligado a la transmisión automática de seis velocidades y levas tras el volante. Los niveles de acabado serán S, SE, SE Luxury, SE Luxury Plus y Titanium Plus (los dos primeros exclusivos del motor pequeño y los sigueintes del Ecoboost). Inside Line reports that Mini's parent, BMW, may be considering a number of new models, including yet another CUV, a sports car, and a four-door. The additions, if they're all greenlit, would bump the Mini line to a total of 10 variants. According to Harald Kreuger, a recently appointed brand board member, the company is also considering a new model positioned below the current Cooper. Such a creation would likely borrow heavily from the Rocketman Concept we saw at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. And what of this sports car? IL reports the machine is envisioned as a rival to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and would carry both a price tag and a fun-to-drive factor to match. We doubt Mini is interested in dabbling in rear-wheel drive, however. The report says the sedan would be more important in overseas markets like China. Mini says sales are doing well in the People's Republic, and that if they maintain their upward momentum, the figures could top the U.S. numbers. That's what the Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) appears to be saying in a response to a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report on electric-drive vehicle incentives and their effect on vehicle sales. While the CBO report stayed away from estimating what percentage of plug-in purchases stemmed from federal tax incentives, the EDTA made sure to highlight the idea that "tax incentives can help move electric drive into the mainstream and reduce gasoline use and emissions." The CBO said in a report released Thursday that the federal government will spend about $7.5 billion on policies that will promote electric-drive vehicles, and that about a quarter of that amount will go directly towards vehicle-purchase tax credits. The federal government gives a tax credit worth up to $7,500 to those who buy plug-ins such as the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt or Toyota Prius Plug-In. Pro- and anti-alt-fuel vehicle incentive rhetoric is heating up in advance of November's presidential election. Earlier this month, the Carnegie Endowment published a paper saying that electric-drive vehicle sales momentum is dependent on federal and local government incentives. Meanwhile, publications such as Forbes have been slamming the federal government for providing direct and indirect financial support towards sales of the Chevrolet Volt, which the publication recently termed a "scam." The allure of this 57-story skyscraper is its glass-encased car elevator, which is shown in the video as an animation. This certainly won't be the first luxury residence featuring a car elevator with en suite parking, but it will be the first to allow the driver to ride along with the car as it travels from the ground floor to the specific unit and vice versa. When parked in the apartment, the car becomes one of the unit's many focal points as it is visible behind a glass wall. In addition to the car elevators, the Porsche Design Tower will have everything expected of a Miami Beach-area dwelling with a Collins Ave address. The Air Maintenance Technology system uses an internal pressure regulator to determine when the tire is low. When pressure falls below a certain parameter, the regulator opens to allow air into a pumping tube. Here's the cool part: the tube runs around the circumference of the tire, and as tire rolls, it squeezes the tube, effectively forcing air into the tire through an inlet. Once the tire is properly inflated, the regulator closes off the pumping tube and the truck continues on its way without ever stopping or having to rely on an external compressor. The benefits to an automatic inflation system are obvious. Vehicles with under-inflated tires use more fuel, have worse handling and chew through tread much quicker than their properly maintained counterparts. Goodyear says implementing Air Maintenance Technology on commercial vehicles was particularly difficult due to the higher-than-normal pressures found on large truck tires. Most commercial vehicles run an average of 105 psi compared to the 32 psi of passenger cars. A few things you probably didn't know: the official name for a crash-test dummy is "anthropomorphic test device" (ATD), General Motors "has a long history" designing ATDs, and the process is so specialized that there's even a Rear Impact Dummy Task Group. GM is working with five other OEMs on the dummies that help ensure humans stay as safe as possible in car crashes. The latest advance is the second generation of the Biofidelic Rear Impact Dummy, or BioRID II, designed by engineers at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden. It has a backbone with 24 simulated vertebrae (the same number we have in our real vertebral columns) to recreate natural seating positions and back and neck movement in rear collisions. The challenge now is to make sure that the BioRID II can "deliver repeatable, reproducible test results" from which the next advances in safety can be engineered. That's where GM comes in. One of its award-winning engineers produced a rear-impact sled just for the purpose. Sus creadores lo consideran el sucesor espiritual del mítico Jaguar E-Type. Sin prejuzgar el nuevo, hay que reconocer que Jaguar ha abusado del vínculo entre sus nuevos modelos y el sempiterno E-Type. Muchas veces, está claro que era sólo un ejercicio de marketing. El E-Type fue en su día el coche de producción más rápido del mundo, y costaba una fracción de lo que costaba un Mercedes 300 SL o el Ferrari de turno. Cosa que los modelos que le siguieron en la gama Jaguar no estuvieron a la altura del ilustre antepasado. | Posted: 22 Sep 2012 05:43 AM PDT  Electric Cowboy rides Zero S, sets speed records on Bonneville Salt Flats Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, Racing Brandon Nozaki Miller - A.K.A. the Electric Cowboy - is on a mission: to prove you don't need big-time money to have big-time fun competing on an electric motorcycle. To help make his case, he's just set several land speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats.Aboard his Zero S steed (affectionately named Foxie Cleopatra), he reached an averaged speed of 101.652 miles per hour over a mile distance, placing himself in the record books of both the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) and AMA (American Motorcyclist Association), in the category of electric motorcycles under 150 kilograms. The effort also landed him the FIM record for the kilometer distance at 102.281 miles per hour. Pretty cool, right? But this leads us to an obvious question: how do you get a battery-powered bike that's rated for a top speed of 88 mph to break the ton? Answer: Modifications. Lots of them. Perhaps the biggest gain came from a simple swap of the stock rear 108-tooth sprocket with a slightly smaller 98-tooth disc. Other hardware changes included the addition of a steering damper and other bits to make it AMA compliant at the higher speeds, as well as little tricks like sawing off over five inches from his handlebars. The Cowboy also employed some high tech savvy in his high-speed bid. Hacking into the bike's controller, he bumped up all the parameters, especially torque in upper range, to feed more power from the Zero ZF6 pack. While this is risky business - the magnets in permanent magnet motors can lose their attractive/repulsive properties if exposed to too much heat - Miller managed to come out on the winning end of the equation. Good thing, because after the benefit of some TLC from the crew down at Hollywood Electrics and a new set of handlebars, Foxie is going up against the gassers of the Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association this weekend.
