| Posted: 22 Sep 2012 01:23 AM PDT  BMW detiene la venta de los M5 y M6 por problemas con la bomba de aceite Filed under: BMW, Tecnología Si haces memoria recordarás que el avanzadísimo motor biturbo V8 del BMW M5 cuenta con lubricación por cárter húmedo con bombas especiales pensadas para facilitar su tarea aún en condiciones de alta carga lateral sostenida (pasos por curva muy rápidos). Pero parece que no todo está funcionando como es debido. Cuentan los amigos de M5Post.com que BMW ha paralizado la comercialización de todos los modelos que equipan este motor (M5 y M6, cabrio y cupé), por problemas con el sistema de lubricación de estos motores S63TU. Los propietarios de coches con el motor afectado habrían recibido una carta invitándoles a no utilizar el vehículo, bajo el riesgo de gripar el motor. Parece ser (no está confirmado) que una tanda de bombas de aceite habría resultado defectuosa, y habría que proceder a su sustitución. Esta semana hemos recibido confirmación de la operación desde la casa francesa. De la cifra que comentábamos hace seis días, de 1.000 millones de euros, la venta se ha quedado más corta, cerrándose en 800 millones de euros en efectivo, y 100 millones más en dividendos al cierre del ejercicio. Con esta venta PSA podrá tapar algunos de los muchos agujeros que están produciéndose en sus cuentas, a razón de pérdidas que los franceses estiman en 200 millones de euros mensuales nada menos. OAO Russian Railways se queda de esta manera un operador logístico europeo con contratos en vigor con PSA y GM, con una gran facturación y beneficios económicos. En todo caso, esta es una más de las acciones de Peugeot para solventar la situación a corto plazo de su compañía, que en el fondo sigue necesitando de una reestructuración que llegará poco a poco a través del cierre de Aulnay, los despidos programados y el lanzamiento de nuevos productos con los que hacer dinero. It's a revamp that allowed the SLS AMG GT to snip five seconds off of a lap around the Nürburgring compared to the "snail-like" SLS AMG. In this video, Mercedes DTM team driver David Coulthard takes the new gullwing out on that very same ring, talks us through its increased performance and then gives us a walkaround to show off the cosmetic changes. | Posted: 21 Sep 2012 05:06 PM PDT  COB wonders if $7.5 billion in Federal plug-in vehicle support is worth it Filed under: EV/Plug-in, MPG, Legislation and Policy, USA The Congressional Budget Office recently released a dour report on the cost of federal policies designed to promote electric vehicles and the role they will play in reducing national gasoline consumption over the next several years. Consumer tax credits for electric vehicles, which can run as high as $7,500, will make up about 25 percent of the $7.5 billion these policies will cost through 2019, the CBO says, and they will have "little or no impact" on overall gasoline consumption. The CBO looked at tax credits for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (like the Chevrolet Volt) and fully battery-electric vehicles (i.e., Nissan Leaf), and compared them to similar-sized conventional gasoline-engine vehicles with average fuel economy ratings. These EVs are using little or no gasoline and produce less greenhouse gas emissions, but the cost to the government can be high, the CBO found. For each gallon of gasoline not burned as a result of a consumer driving an EV, it will cost the federal government anywhere between $3 and $7. The federal tax credit may not be enough to offset the higher price of EVs compared to high-mileage conventional cars. The costs of electric vehicles are much higher than similar-sized gasoline vehicles, and the federal tax credit of $7,500 per vehicle is not enough to bridge the gap, the CBO said. And, the bigger the battery, the greater the cost disadvantage for buyers of plug-in vehicles and conventional vehicles. Part of the problem in meeting gasoline consumption reduction targets is that upcoming federal fuel standards could cancel out gains made by federal tax credits, the CBO study said. The corporate average fuel economy mandate begins with automakers meeting 35.5 mpg by 2016 and 54.5 mpg by 2025. "Increased sales of electric vehicles allow automakers to sell more low-fuel-economy vehicles and still comply with the federal standards that govern the average fuel economy of the vehicles they sell (known as CAFE standards)," the CBO said. Beyond consumer tax credits, where will the remaining 75 percent of that $7.5 billion cost to the federal government come from? Cameron is back in the news for making some pretty cool car-based art objects, this time teaming with photographer Mark Brown to do a little bit of light painting. Actually, this is the second go at what the tandem has dubbed "light graffiti." In 2011 the duo painted London with hip renditions of Alfas, Ferraris and other slick rides. This time Cameron and Brown have chosen to paint some of their favorite examples of show cars from this season. A Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Chevrolet C7 Corvette and Ford Focus RS are amongst the newest subjects, all painted in vibrant, flowing paths of light, and hanging in mid-air. The problem stems from the engine oil pump; if the pump doesn't supply the correct amount of oil to the engine's moving parts, "severe engine damage" is the likely result. That's not good at all. BMW is also "contacting customers that have already taken delivery and recommending customers not drive their cars." Sad news for M5 and M6 owners, to be sure, but we think it beats a bunch of blown engines. | Posted: 21 Sep 2012 03:26 PM PDT  Official: Honda CEO confirms return of Civic Type R, announces new Fit-based CUV and super sports bike Filed under: Europe, Crossover, Hatchback, Honda, Motorcycle With a goal of earning 39 million global customers across its power equipment, automobile and motorcycle line of products by 2017, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito announced a handful of exciting new models for the latter two that range from high performance to fuel efficient. While the U.S. news was essentially limited to the confirmation that the Acura RLX will be debuting in production form at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show, Honda fans in Europe have a lot more to look forward to. After a five-year hiatus, Ito confirmed that the Honda Civic Type-R (pictured above) would be returning to Europe in 2015. No details were revealed about this high-output Civic, but Ito did mention that Honda's goal is to make the new Type-R the "fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle on the Nürburgring" where we've already seen the car testing. The Euro-spec Civic Type-R went out of production in 2010 due to stricter European emissions standards. No word as to whether the new Civic Type-R would eventually be offered in the U.S., but don't hold your breath. Also headed to the European market is the upcoming subcompact crossover based on the next-generation Honda Fit/Jazz. The new Honda Fit will debut next year, and Honda says the crossover version will go on sale within two years. Both of these products will be built at Honda's all-new assembly plant near Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. In addition to Europe and the U.S., Automotive News reports that Honda is also looking to expand its lineup in China and India with up to 10 new or updated models in China by 2016 and a new diesel model for India in 2014. Ito didn't just limit the news to future cars, either, as he announced that the motorcycle division of Honda will be introducing a new super sports bike based on the Honda's MotoGP racing bike. The Japanese automaker, whose EV e-NV200 has the same 24-kWh battery and 80-kW motor as the Nissan Leaf, started testing the vehicle with FedEx in London last December and expanded that effort to Yokohama, Japan, this past summer. Nissan says more testing will be done with FedEx in Singapore, Brazil and the U.S. The vehicle will likely include an option that allows it to be 80-percent recharged in 30 minutes using a DC fast charger. Martin Uhlarik es un ex diseñador de Nissan. El grupo chino anunció también una inversión de1,9 millones de euros en su centro de diseño de Longbridge, Inglaterra. Uhlarik, canadiense de 41 años, sustituye así a Tony williams-Kenny que fue nombrado director global del diseño para SAIC y que está ahora en puesto en Shanghai). Antes de entrar en SAIC, Uhlarik se encargó del restyling del Qashqai, del concpet car Evalia y del concept car NV200. Anteriormente, era uno de los diseñadores senior para los interiores en Skoda. La tarea de Uhlarik será la de liderar el diseño de MG y de Roewe. De momento, el Reino Unido es el único mercado donde MG vende coches, aunque sus ventas no sean extraordinarias, pero una fuente de MG explicó que para finales de 2013, MG volvería al continente con los MG6 y MG3. There's more to the Scotsman than mad antics, it seems. After studying philosophy and art history, the final hurdle to getting his degree was writing his dissertation, the subjects of which were the BMW Art Cars. So, who better to take us on a tour of some of the works in the Art Car collection while it was in London for the Olympics? Starting with the BMW 3.0-liter CSL dressed up by Alexander Calder and raced at Le Mans, and alighting on various models right through to the BMW M3 GT2 by Jeff Koons that was recently spotted in a fjord, the trip down art history lane is smart and entertaining. There are even background digressions to add to the fun. For instance: Warhol painted the M1 in just 28 minutes - so quickly that the camera crew hired just for the purpose didn't have time to film him painting it. A woman in Minnesota is in hot water after allegedly making her 11-year-old nephew ride home in the trunk of her Lexus after riding a water ride at a local amusement park. On August 23, witnesses in the parking lot of Valleyfair Amusement Park reported seeing the child climb into the trunk of the car before the car drove off. By the time police had caught up with Susan Marie McCarty, 38, and her Lexus, she had already dropped her nephew off, but she had admitted to police that she put him back there because she didn't want him to get water on her car's leather. She justified her actions by telling police that she left the center pass-through open allowing air conditioning to get into the trunk. The boy's grandmother, 14-year-old sister and another child passenger were also in the vehicle, and while the grandmother was "uneasy" about him riding in the trunk, she didn't want to question the aunt's decision. That's the recent history of Rafael de Mestre and his attempt to be the first person to take a standard, production electric vehicle around the world. After playing catch-up with the Electric Odyssey duo and their Citroen C-Zero EV, de Mestre suffered a crash in Germany just 600 miles from the finish line. Undeterred, de Mestre had his Tesla Roadster repaired straightaways and successfully completed the drive last weekend. @TeslaMotors Tweeted congratulations for "making the #GuinessBook of records with your Roadster: the first EV to make it around the world!" Top safety marks, however, seem to have been left off of the menu. These popular new crossovers are just the first of among 54 new cars to be tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and both received a four-star overall crash rating, out of a possible five stars. While a four-star rating is still pretty respectable, this announcement does come on the heels of three separate recalls that have been issued for the new Escape since its introduction this summer. The good news for Ford, at least, is that the new model received a five-star rating for side impact. That, with four stars for frontal crash and rollover protection, add up to the four-star overall rating. The all-new Mazda CUV duplicated those scores. Despite not getting a perfect five stars, each of these vehicles are safer than their respective predecessors, the previous-generation Escape and the Mazda Tribute, which had three stars across all four categories. We've heard news of other special edition Macs, after seeing the one-off X-1 Concept at Pebble Beach, and now it seems that a limited edition MP4-12C will be made available for the supercar-inclined one-percenters of Singapore. Slated to be delivered this weekend to coincide with the Singapore Grand Prix are three Fire Black SGP Edition McLaren MP4-12Cs. Very little is known about these specially modded Macs, save that they feature a unique paint scheme, matching interior, revised front and rear bumpers and lightweight wheels. According to the rumor-dropper at Teeemspeed, each of the special-edition cars will command a whopping $1.28 million SGD (around $1.04 million U.S.) asking price. Aunque hace unos días te habíamos informado de los datos principales, hoy lo que te traemos son más imágenes del interior en las que puedes observar con más detalle la distribución del habitáculo. Como en el anterior Carens, la nueva generación tiene capacidad para hasta siete pasajeros pero como novedad, todos los asientos serán independientes y multirregulables. Por las fotos la mayor pega estará en el asientos central de la segunda fila, más estrecho que los otros. Una cosa interesante es que al suprimirlos todos la superficie de carga queda totalmente plana, facilitando la introducción de objetos voluminosos. Three of my friends have them, a friend's mom just bought one, and even my building's maintenance guy has one. Every time I talk to any of these people, they make a point of telling me just how much they enjoy owning a Soul and how the quirky Kia is just about perfect for their respective needs. When this red Molten one showed up in my parking lot, the maintenance guy spent a good 15 minutes inspecting it from top to bottom, seeing how it compares to the last-generation Plus model that he holds so dear. There's good reason for all the commotion, too. The Soul offers an interesting package that offers good looks, functionality, technology, efficiency and refinement in droves, but does so in a way that attracts people who like vehicles with good ground clearance and a commanding seating position. Wrap all that in an incredibly affordable package, and there's indeed a recipe for success here.Driving Notes The uplevel 2.0-liter inline-four got a much-needed massaging during the 2012 model year refresh and now features direct injection. As a result, power has been upgraded from 142 horsepower and 137 pound-feet of torque to 164 hp and 148 lb-ft, meaning... There's ample power on tap without a huge sacrifice in efficiency. Even with this more potent powerplant, fuel economy is rated at 26 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg highway. The base 1.6-liter engine that we previously tested is down by 26 hp and 25 lb-ft but only offers one extra MPG in both the city and highway cycles. Kia's new six-speed automatic transmission offers smooth shifts, even when jumping down a couple of gears for passing on the highway. The transmission will run a gear up all the way up to its redline before changing cogs, but if you insist on doing so, you'll be punished with lots of buzzy engine noise. The 18-inch wheels of this tester look really sharp and help drive home the funky/cool design of the Soul, but combined with the P235/45R18 Nexen tires, they can make for a harsh ride on less-than-ideal surfaces. Having an upright windshield and large greenhouse might be great for visibility, but wind noise takes a hit. Thankfully the upgraded Infinity stereo has no problem offering good sound quality when it's turned up - you'll be doing that often to wipe out the wind noise on the highway. This top-level ! model - that's pronounced, "Exclaim" - offers leather seats (heated up front) as part of the $2,500 premium package. My test car had just under 500 miles on the odometer and the hide already looked worn in places, especially on the rear bench. However, those rear seats are comfortable and quite spacious. I had no complaints from passengers and though I'm admittedly only five-foot, seven inches, I found ample amounts of headroom and legroom. Fold those seats flat and you'll be rewarded with 53.4 cubic feet of cargo space, too. That said, the rest of the interior looks and feels top-notch, with nicely grained plastics in a two-tone black-and-tan color palette throughout the cabin. Specific elements like the leather-wrapped steering wheel and padded leather trim on the doors give an added element of luxury, too - welcome niceties in a car with a sub-$25k price tag. Actually, make that sub-$24k. Even this fully loaded Soul ! with the premium package and accessories like a cargo net, rear bumper applique and auto-dimming mirror only stickers for $23,575, including $775 for destination. | Posted: 21 Sep 2012 12:32 PM PDT  Followup: Production resumes at Chrysler plant after murder-suicide Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Production resumes today at Chrysler's Jefferson North plant in Detroit just one day after a tragedy on the line in which a worker slit the throat of another and then later killed himself. Police said on Thursday that an ongoing dispute between two employees at the plant resulted in one stabbing the other at 7:50 AM, and then fleeing. He was found later Thursday on Belle Isle, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The names of the men were not confirmed by authorities, but co-workers and neighbors identified the man who killed his co-worker as Jeff Hunt and the slain co-worker as Keith Readus, sources have reported. The Jefferson North plant produces the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. Earlier this month, Smith Electric Vehicles said it would do an initial public offering of 4.45 million shares to raise around $76 million. Yesterday, Smith announced that this IPO registration will be withdrawn. The reason, said Smith CEO Bryan Hansel in a statement, is that, "we were unable to complete a transaction at a valuation or size that would be in the best interests of our company and its existing shareholders. We have instead elected to pursue private financing opportunities to support the execution of our business plan." The successor to the 207 Super 2000 that has won six Intercontinental Rally Challenge titles, Peugeot calls the tubular-framed 208 R5 a "true competition wildcat" for asphalt and gravel stages that will go on sale toward the end of 2013, to teams competing in IRC and national rallies. Many of the specs carry over due to category requirements of the S2000 class, so the 208 Type R5 will have a five-speed sequential gearbox putting power through two locking differentials but no center diff, to all four wheels and supported by a long travel suspension. The 1.6-liter THP engine from the 207 S2000 also makes the jump, but the four-cylinder, 16-valve motor will output 280 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Four-pot calipers are mounted at all four wheels, hiding behind 18-inch wheels for tarmac stages and 15-inchers on gravel, while minimum weight for any setup on the Type R5, as per FIA regulations, will be 1,200 kilograms. Peugeot hasn't revealed the price, but again, per the FIA, the maximum price allowed is €180,000 ($232,807 U.S.) before taxes. | Posted: 21 Sep 2012 11:25 AM PDT  Spy Shots: 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible caught with its top down Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, Volkswagen There're only a couple more months to go until Volkswagen officially unveils the 2014 Beetle Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and while it doesn't take much imagination to figure out what the drop-top Beetle will look like, our spy photographers caught the car testing with minimal camouflage. The best part about of these pictures is that we can finally see what this car will look like with the top both up and down. Volkswagen has managed to keep the car's unique and bubbly roofline with the top in place, but the big news for the 2014 Beetle Convertible is that it no longer looks like its wearing a backward baseball cap with the top folded. The new Beetle Convertible will still use a cloth top but it does a much better job folding into the body, giving the car a cleaner look. Another interesting thing that we see in the spy photos is that all of the test cars are wearing steel wheels with stylish hubcaps on the entry-level Beetle 2.5. The current base model for the 2013 Beetle comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, so it appears the new soft-top Beetle might be getting some cost-saving wheels on the base models.
