Si no nos hicimos eco por acá es porque se nos salía un poco de las noticias "tipo" del mundo del automovilismo, aunque nos impresionamos, una vez más, con la osadía del italiano, y su capacidad de luchar por ser el mejor en todo aquello en lo que participa. Su minusvalía (perdió ambas piernas en un accidente en la ya desaparecida CART americana) no fue obstáculo para que Zanardi luchara en el mundial de turismos, WTCC, y lograra victorias y podios. Pero Alex quiere más, y busca un nuevo desafío. Tras colgarse la medalla de oro, el que fuera piloto de Fórmula 1 busca ahora conseguir un asiento en el DTM alemán. Si haces memoria, recordarás que hace un par de días te contamos que BMW tenía previsto ampliar su plantel de coches en el campeonato alemán de turismos hasta ocho unidades. Takanobu Ito ha puesto las ideas de futuro sobre la mesa, y ha confirmado algunos proyectos importantes para la marca. De entre ellos destacamos la confirmación del Civic Type R, que llegará en 2015 y será "el coche de tracción delantera más rápido en en Nürburgring" (osada papeleta), tomando mucha inspiración de la participación en el mundial de turismos WTCC. También nos alegra y sorprende que Ito haya confirmado la llegada de un nuevo descapotable biplaza deportivo y compacto "con una fuerte carga dinámica", que se lanzará en Japón en 2014, sin confirmar si llegará a Europa. | Posted: 20 Sep 2012 05:27 PM PDT  Video: Chris Harris discovers new niche with Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake Filed under: Performance, Wagon, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury There are a number of interesting tidbits in Chris Harris' review of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, one of them being that he spends most of his seat time talking about the station wagon like it's a sports car. This isn't all that surprising if you limit yourself to the side of the spec sheet that lists "twin-turbo V8 with 557 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, limited-slip differential and seven-speed paddle-shifted transmission." One the other side, though, is the part about it being more than 16 feet long, having four doors, seating for five and a cargo capacity that can go from 590 liters to 1,550 liters by folding down the rear seats. And that gets Harris examining how a wagon can not only fill a niche, but can actually be something special and, perhaps, even a cult vehicle. Another measure of how far the automotive world has come is when Harris says, "Only a little 285-section [tire] at the back," which means a new goalpost for "little" tire sizes comes from a review of a station wagon. What we don't know is what the chargers will look like. This will change Monday evening. Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently Tweeted that that Supercharger unveiling will make it "feel like alien spaceships landed at highway rest stops," so that give us some indication of the design. We're not sure if those vertical supports in the image above are part of the station or not, but it's the teaser image on Tesla's website now, so we think it's likely. As for the technical aspects, here are some of the things we already know: A top-of-the-line 85-kWh battery pack will be able to be recharged in about an hour. You will be able to get around three hours of driving during a 30-minute stop, and that will get better over time. The capacity is "on the order of 100 kW." There will be solar power involved (we had heard rumors of battery swaps, too, but then that kind of died down). The network is intended to allow for long-distance drives and will require about 30 Superchargers to provide that capability along the U.S. continental coasts. Musk recently told AutoblogGreen the reason for the proprietary network (other plug-in vehicles won't be able to use the special connector) was that, "the other charge systems don't have enough power and in order to really charge fast, the charger needs pretty advanced technology and it needs to exactly match the pack. It's got to be hand-in-glove." The Supercharger will be unveiled, along with deployment plans that provide "a solution for the electric vehicle's long-distance road trip that only Model S* can achieve" on Monday, September 24, with a live webcast starting 8 p.m. PDT. Allpar.com reports the manufacturer has laid claim to a stack of new names, including Detroit Motor Works, Wrangler Freedom Edition, 8 Mile, Crossroad and Chrysler 100, as well as Ram ProMaster and the Ram ProMaster City. The automaker has made no secret of the fact that it wants to build a new small car, and that the machine will almost certainly ride under the Chrysler 100 banner. Dealers reportedly got a closer look at the vehicle at a recent gathering in Las Vegas. Likewise, the two ProMaster names are little surprise, as Fiat intends to give the Ford Transit and Transit connect some competition with its own European-style Ducato vans. Now it looks as if those will come with Promaster badges. But, names like Detroit Motor Works, 8 Mile and Crossroad all leave the door open for some speculation. That's the same price as four months ago, and the same price as the outgoing Fusion. Including destination, the SE adds niceties like a keyless entry pad, power driver's seat and SiriusXM, andwill set you back $24,495 - five bucks more than the survey price. Essentially every other trim holds steady: the SE with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost is $25,290 in either manual or auto, the 2.0-liter EcoBoosted SE is $26,745, the SE Hybrid is $27,995 and the Titanium (which adds keyless/pushbutton start, Sony HD audio, dual exhaust, etc.) is $30,995. A further $2,000 is needed to claim all-wheel drive. The Luxury Package price has gone way up, though. On the survey site, the package topped out out $2,000 on the SE Hybrid, and cost $1,505 to add to the 1.6-liter EcoBoost or $1,050 to add to the 2.0-liter EcoBoost. It still costs the same $2,000 to include on the hybrid, but now you'll need $2,300 to inject either 1.6-liter EcoBoost Fusion with more plush, and the 2.0-liter EcoBoost automatically includes the Luxury Package and adds $1,455 to the price. Audi's Dual-Mode Hybrid A1 e-tron concept car has multiple drivetrain modes that let the plug-in hbyrid's 1.5-liter TFSI internal combustion engine like both a conventional engine and an on-board generator, depending on the car's speed and other conditions. The engine can also be disengaged from the drivetrain by a claw clutch when needed. This is usually when the car is operating in electric mode, up to speeds of 34 miles per hour. Then there's serial mode, where "the combustion engine and the alternator ... produce electrical energy to support, relieve or substitute the battery should it be discharged." There's a four-minute video floating around that provides some computer-generated images of the car's exterior and drivetrain system and that lays out how the car operates, complete with cool, mellow electronica music. You can see it below, along with Audi's too-long press release. The upshot is that the dual-mode e-tron delivers a combined 177 horsepower, can go about 56 miles on battery power alone and gets a whopping 235 miles per gallon equivalent (using an unspecified measuring stick). Audi has already tested its "regular" A1 e-tron extended-range EV for about 30,000 miles. The images show what appears to be a stylized Rolls-Royce Phantom or Ghost in an artistic rendering that would look at home in South Beach. Like the cars, Rolls-Royce is going all out with the launch of these special cars with an invitation-only introduction including a champagne reception. This is not one of those times, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the "Honda Loves You Back" campaign is doing a bunch of nice things for Honda fans. The latest involves the LA-based band Monsters Calling Home, which shot a couple of its music videos entirely in Hondas owned by various band members, proving that, yes, you can play a set of drums in the back of a Fit. Honda noticed one video in particular for the song "Fight to Keep" (below) and decided to love the band back with a special surprise. The band was lured to a location in LA under the ruse of playing the song live for a room of Honda executives, but the carmaker had other plans. Instead, Monsters Calling Home was ushered across the street to the studio where ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live is taped. You can guess what happened next, or better yet, scroll down to watch the band's reaction to getting their big break courtesy of a carmaker. Honda has done a few other things as part of its "Honda Loves You Back" campaign, including throwing a parade for a guy who drove his Accord over 1,000,000 miles and making Jack-o-Lanterns that feature customer faces. Are these actions entirely altruistic? The publication has published an editorial by contributor Patrick Michaels which accused the automaker of "giving away rent-a-Volts," saying the model's record-high sales of 2,831 units last month were artificially inflated because about two-thirds of the sales were leased (for as little as $199 a month). Michaels argues that true sales to the general public are closer to about 850 units a month. Further fueling the opinion piece's claims of a government "scam" are recent reports that the U.S. Department of Defense will buy 1,500 Volts. In Michaels' words, "The fact is that no one wants this car." As you likely recall, Reuters recently reported that GM may be losing almost $50,000 on each Volt sold, a claim that was judged to not stand up to arithmetic scrutiny - a contention that was quickly refuted by former GM executive Bob Lutz (in the pages of Forbes, no less). And just think, there are only 12 days until GM's monthly sales numbers for September to come out. | Posted: 20 Sep 2012 02:44 PM PDT  Report: Honda butching up Crosstour for 2013 because 'people weren't exactly sure what it was' Filed under: Concept Cars, Crossover, Hatchback, Honda, Design/Style When the Honda Accord Crosstour launched back in 2009 as a 2010 model, we didn't quite know what to make of it. We weren't exactly taken with its styling and we didn't get its value equation, either. It drove well enough, but fell behind the segment's fierce competition in terms of space, amenities, visibility and pricing. The market seemed to agree, and the model never got near Honda's (traditionally conservative) sales projections of 40,000 units per year. Since that time, Honda has tried to build momentum with the model by deleting its Accord appellation (it's now just "Crosstour") and adding a four-cylinder model, but sales haven't budged. Through August, Ward's Auto reports that Honda has managed to shift just 12,857 units, and its best-ever year, 2010, it only managed 28,851 units. For 2013, the Crosstour is getting its biggest push since launch with its first major rework, and the logic behind the facelift is interesting. According to Ward's Auto, Honda believes that a major reason why the Crosstour has failed to find buyers is because people didn't know what to call it (or presumably, what to cross-shop it against). Honda marketed the model as a crossover, but as Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president-product planning opines, "people weren't exactly sure what it was (because) it was a tweener." So Honda responded by showing the thinly disguised 'concept' seen above at the New York Auto Show in April, and the showcar is expected to match the as-yet-unseen 2013 production model almost exactly. If that's the case, Honda will clearly butch up the five-door's lines for the new model year, with a squared-off jaw, bolder grille, contrasting lower cladding, and so on. What's more, Honda is also addressing our criticism about a lack of amenities by giving the cabin a new eight-inch information display, revamped trim, keyless start and paddle shifters on the V6. In addition, the V6 model will receive a new six-speed auto in place of the 2012 model's five-speed unit. To combat the Crosstour's inherently poor visibility, Honda is fitting all models with a standard backup camera and its trick LaneWatch blind-spot system will be offered as an option. | Posted: 20 Sep 2012 02:43 PM PDT  Report: Former CEO Whitacre urges Treasury to sell stake in General Motors Filed under: Government/Legal, GM, Earnings/Financials Former General Motors chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre is in the papers today, specifically the Opinion section of The Wall Street Journal, espousing a strong belief that the U.S. Treasury should get out of GM's hair as quickly as possible. Whitacre's sentiments come, no doubt, as a response to the recent news that GM has been pressuring the Treasury to sell off its remaining 500 million shares of the company's stock. In the op-ed piece, Whitacre is careful to express just how important the U.S. Government's bailout - an initiative known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP - was when $50 billion was added to the company coffers in 2009. But he goes on to say that government involvement has long since run its useful course, and its presence is now serving to hold back the automaker, rather than serve to secure the U.S. public's investment. Writes Whitacre, pointedly, about the continued involvement of TARP regulators at GM, "The company already answers to a lot of constituencies: stockholders, unions, Wall Street and global competitors. Adding TARP to the mix for another few years, or even another few quarters, is not fair to GM or to the one million people it employs, directly and indirectly."
