The intent behind its latest creation, the Areion (named for a mythological horse that's both immortal and fast), is to change the game in the Formula Student series. The Areion takes a different approach from other Formula Student cars, as it's been created using using the latest 3D printing technology. The team had automotive fabricator Materialise employ its Mammoth Stereolithography process to create the car's bodywork. Part of the design was to emulate the exterior texture of advanced Olympic-caliber swimsuits. Those suits, in turn, were inspired by shark skin. According to Wired, the Areion is motivated by an 85-kilowatt motor getting juice from a 50-volt lithium polymer battery pack. The nimble (617 pounds) formula car can do zero to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds and achieve a top speed of 88 mph. Just like last year, Chevy is fielding a bright pink Camaro SS for the AdvoCare 500, and it will also help raise money for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. During the Sprint Cup race, Chevrolet will donate $200 for every lap run under caution. In the 2011 Atlanta race, it had a similar donation that ended up totaling $12,800 after 64 caution laps. As a bonus, this Camaro pace car spent Friday at the track as Chevrolet Racing hosted 30 breast cancer survivors who got rides around the track from Jamie McMurray and Ron Hornaday, Jr. as well as having the chance to meet Danica Patrick. The car includes the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer logo, and the pink ribbon symbolizing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is prominently featured on the hood. That's what the U.S. model is for. Across the pond, General Motors' UK Vauxhall is making a different kind of association between machine and liquids, promoting a London film series that, in one installment, will include a movie projected onto a jet of water, Hybrid Cars says. Visual artist Max Hattler will project images from an animated work commissioned by Vauxhall onto a 1,500-square-foot "screen" formed by a jet spewing out water from the UK's Regent's Canal. The film creator says the work is a "psychedelic geometric ballet," so now you know all you need to about that. The film will show from September 6th to 16th and is part of the so-called Vauxhall Ampera Season at London's Kings Cross Filling Station, which will show films for about six months. Most everyone with a drivers license has either been one or needed one. But now, the designated texter is a new idea being promoted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to target texting drivers. A recent study by State Farm Insurance and Harris Interactive says more teens are taking the initiative and volunteering to text for everyone. A new video from NHTSA called "Stairs" has the tagline, "Not everyone should should text and walk. No one should text and drive." To illustrate, a texting teen attempts to ascend a set of stairs. She falls face-first, her phone landing at her feet. In the next scene, another teen at the wheel of her SUV gets totally distracted by a text on her phone and looks up just in time to see the pedestrians about to be plowed under her front bumper. Having a designated texter is a pretty clever idea for those that can't wait. We're just concerned about what happens when an inebriated non-driver becomes the designated texter for the designated driver. Wackiness is sure to ensue. Claro que el producto derivado del Saab 9-3, a su vez fabricado a partir de un Opel Vectra, no contaba con tracción trasera, un sistema de infoentretenimiento de nivel, o un comportamiento dinámico de primera categoría, optimizado en Nürburgring. Pero más allá de sus atributos positivos, el Cadillac necesitará de una gama de motores diésel competente y de una campaña de márketing importante si quiere llegar a arañar mercado a los germanos. Entre tanto, tendrá que conformarse con la no menos importante misión de recuperar mercado en Estados Unidos, donde el gusto por las berlinas aspiracionales germanas está en pleno apogeo. Pero parece que ahí el ATS tiene un futuro mejor planteado que en el viejo continente. Tras el éxito del CTS (conociendo el producto no nos extraña), este segmento D debería ser el siguiente paso de la recuperación de Cadillac como referencia global. They'll be named the 2012 Automotive Enthusiast of the Year, and 2012 Automotive Visionary of the Year, respectively. According to museum chairman Steve Young, "We felt it was time to recognize those who have used to gift of humor to promote the enjoyment of the automobile as a creative outlet." Young would be referring to Corolla's "CarCast" a weekly automotive podcast, and the "Adam Corolla Podcast" which, at over 5 million downloads a month, is the Guinness Book of World Records' "Most Downloaded Podcast." John Lasseter, meanwhile, oversees the creative aspect of all Disney and Pixar films. The two-time Oscar-winner made his debut with Toy Story in 1995 and is being recognized by the Petersen Museum for his work directing Cars and Cars 2. Lasseter has a cameo appearance in Cars 2 as "John Lassetire," the crew chief for Jeff Gordon's "Jeff Gorvette" character. In a comment released by the Petersen Museum, Lasseter says, "The Petersen Museum has the same passion for cars that we at Pixar have for animation...we are kindred spirits, and I'm honored both as a filmmaker and lifelong car lover to receive this award." Y BMW es una marca particularmente atenta a sus tradiciones. La mejor prueba de ello es la eterna calandra de los dos riñones (los famosos Nieren, en alemán) o el Hofmeister kink (el codo en la luna lateral trasera) inaugurado en el 1500 que están presentes en todos los modelos de la marca, desde el modesto Serie 1 hasta el Serie 7 limusina. Otra de esas tradiciones que BMW cuida cuida con esmero son los derivados deportivos M. No es sólo por gusto, sino porque la división M es una de las marcas más rentables del grupo BMW. BMW M (entonces BMW Motorsport) empezó su andadura en 1972 con tan sólo ocho empleados, pero para 1988 ya eran m-as de 400 trabajadores y desde entonces la división no ha dejado de crecer. El primer modelo fue el 3.0 CSL que otorgó muchas victorias en superturismo y resistencia a BMW. El primer modelo realmente de calle vino en 1978 con el M1. Diseñado por Giugiaro e inspirado en el concept car BMW Turbo del francés Paul Bracq, lo animaba un 6 cilindros en línea situado en posición central trasera de 280 CV. Hoy en día, sigue siendo el único BMW de motor central. Más tarde llegarían los M5, M3 y el V12 del McLaren F1; modelos que contribuyeron enormemente al prestigio de BMW M. En los últimos años, los modelos M ya no parecían tan deportivos. Si es que, de entrada y sin menos preciar la proeza técnica, un X6M o un X5M se pueden calificar de deportivos. Van sorprendentemente bien para los mastodontes que son, pero no son deportivos. Las críticas empezaron a llover, algo que no afectó a las ventas, estos dos modelos son un éxito. Últimamente, con la creación de la serie M Performance -de momento sólo con motores diésel...- y el artefacto sonoro del nuevo M5, BMW M parece haber perdido un poco el rumbo en términos de tradición y pureza de concepto. Sin embargo, para los que ven en M algo que un símbolo de estatus social, BMW propone desde el año pasado una pequeña joya, el Serie 1M Coupé (que no M1, insisto). Este pequeño cupé recupera lo mejor de BMW M recordando a modelos míticos, como el M3 o el 3.0 CSL. From 2008 with a black prototype that no one would talk about, the Gazoo Racing LFA has raced every year since and suffered breakdowns, fires, more mechanical issues and high-speed encounters with guardrails. There were enough literal hard knocks that this year, of the team's drivers said that that they were still rookies. Even so, the five-year "novices" took SP8-Class honors ahead of two Aston Martins and an Audi A8, getting some silverware to go along with that scintillating exhaust note. The team put together a video recap of its years on the 'Ring, and it's definitely worth a watch. | Posted: 01 Sep 2012 05:22 AM PDT  GM cancels next-gen hybrid truck/SUV program Filed under: Hybrid, MPG, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GM, GMC According to a report from GMInsideNews.com, General Motors has shut down its hybrid program for company's next-generation of full-size pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles. Currently, the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Yukon and Cadillac Escalade all use the two-mode hybrid technology. Historically, the two-mode hybrid models have not sold well, and only yield minor improvements in overall fuel economy. In most applications, the two-mode hybrid system is rated at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg highway. GMI reports that it's unusual for programs like this to be shut down so close to the launch of a new vehicle - the next-generation trucks/SUVs are scheduled to debut for the 2014 model year - but that many sources within GM are not surprised about the move. These new full-size hybrids were reportedly supposed to use an updated two-mode system, featuring a smaller displacement V8 engine, upgraded battery storage (using a more modern lithium-ion pack) and revamped electric motors, according to GMI.
