Son muchos años viendo carreras, y son muchos años siguiendo muchos campeonatos además de la Fórmula 1, y créeme si te digo que nunca antes vi algo semejante. El caso más flagrante es el de Grosjean. Como sabes ya, el piloto francés arrancaba en la parrilla con su Lotus, cerraba a Hamilton, y el británico, sin más pista donde colocarse, chocaba con él, y causaba una melé con Fernando Alonso de por medio, con los tres implicados abandonando la carrera, afortunadamente sin consecuencias físicas. ¿Lo hizo bien Grosjean? No. Está claro que no. Ahora bien, de ahí a que la FIA le haya castigado con una carrera de sanción hay mucha distancia. Sam Longson, competing in the Best in the Desert "Vegas to Reno" race on August 17, showed just how rough off-road racing can be when he rode his bike the final 14 miles of the race with three broken ribs and a partially collapsed lung. After riding 520 miles of the 534-mile event (known as the "Longest Off-Road Race in the United States"), Longson crashed his Yamaha after hitting what appears to be loose gravel over the trail. The incident occurs at the 4:30 mark of the video, at which point Longson flies back-first into the rock-strewn terrain. Being in such a remote location meant Longson was far from help, so he hopped back on his bike, took a quick breather and headed for the finish line. Through the rest of the video, you hear him groaning in pain as he rides over the rough terrain. Despite all that, he finished the race in 38th place overall and third in his class. The ordeal, recorded on Longson's helmet camera, is posted below. The German super sedan and two-door have finally rolled in to U.S. dealerships. (Given how long we've been talking about these cars, you could be forgiven for thinking they've been on sale in the States for ages.) The M6 coupe and M5 sedan join the M6 convertible, which has been on sale since July. Regardless of which model you choose, the new M cars share the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. According to BMW, 560 horsepower is the peak output, and it's sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Oh, and the M5 offers a six-speed stick as a no-cost option in the States. Thirty-two participants lined up to demonstrate the possibilities of electric propulsion and, for 31 of them, the mission was to knock Tesla Motors out of first place. The California-based EV maker provided the cars that took first place in the past two years, so the big question was: could Tesla be beat this time? In the car class, the Mini E, Mercedes E-Cell, Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iOn took on the Tesla Roadster. As for e-motorcycles, Zerotracer, Zero Motorcycles and others raced for the title. Their first stop, after a 72-km prologue, was in Salzburg, where competitors were provided with solar-powered recharging at the city's Convention Centre. The second phase of the race covered 120 km and was eco-focused, where drivers earned points for being energy efficient. During the course of the race, cars and bikes traveled an average of 200 km per day to make it through to the finish line. And the winner was? Well, the same model as last year: LG Solar's Tesla Roadster, followed by the Mercedes A-Class E-Cell and then a Mini E. The best bike was a 2012 Zero Motorcycles DS, which finished eighth overall. Rumors have swirled around the marriage of the two series for years, but fired up in earnest two weeks ago. Though details are still scarce, SPEED says Grand-Am will likely take on sanctioning duties. The news comes courtesy of unnamed sources, including manufacturers and race participants, who indicate the championship may very well combine classes from both ALMS and the Rolex Series. ALMS President and CEO Scott Atherton has denied the merger, and SPEED says a spokesperson for the Rolex Series declined to comment. Traditionally, the two race series have been spirited rivals, and while both saw widespread support from manufacturers and privateer teams over the years, entries in key hategories have recently declined. The two won't officially combine until 2014 at the earliest. ALMS recently signed a one-year licensing deal with the sanctioning body behind the Le Mans series in Europe, which means we'll continue to see racing under the ALMS banner for at least one more season. Sin ser un descapotable real al uso, el nuevo integrante gana en luminiosidad y sensación de libertad. En el vídeo que encontrarás tras el salto podrás ver cómo funciona el sistema de plegado de la lona, además de otros pequeños detalles. According to The Detroit News, interest in active safety features like those does not necessarily mean you want a self-driving car. The paper cites a study of more than 2,500 drivers over the age of 18, commissioned by Ford, which found that nine out of ten drivers were interested in active safety tech. According to the study, 60 percent of drivers blame blind spots for accidents, while 40 percent are actually afraid of parallel parking. Additionally, nearly half of the drivers surveyed have admitted to falling asleep while driving or know someone who has. The study was conducted by market-research firm Penn Schoen Berland, and found that while drivers want driver-assist technologies, many are not aware of some that are already available. Since Ford was the automaker to commission the study, it was quick to point out that the 2013 Fusion offers 10 such driver aids, such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and a rear view camera, among other features. It should also be noted that many of these features are also available on new Nissan, Chevrolet, Honda, and Toyota vehicles. As for the self driving car? The people have spoken, and more than half are interested, but only 39 percent said they could be comfortable driving an autonomous vehicle. The Euro NCAP, similar to our National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, put the all-new 2013 Volvo V40 through a battery of crash tests and found that it is one of the safest cars it has tested. The Euro NCAP's testing consists of cars being tested in four categories (adult occupant, child occupant, pedestrian and safety assist) for vehicle safety, and the V40 drove (or more likely was towed) away with some of the top scores the agency has ever handed out. The 98 percent adult occupant rating is the highest result recorded by the Euro NCAP, while car's innovative pedestrian airbag helped it receive an equally impressive 88-percent rating for pedestrian safety. This safety device is actually an airbag underneath the hood, and when contact with a pedestrian is detected, the airbag inflates, raising the rear portion of the hood which helps to cushion the a person's head or body as it makes contact with the car. The Volvo V40 was perfect in the safety assist category thanks to systems like Pedestrian Detection, City Safety, auto braking and numerous other active safety features. The only knock that the V40 took was to child occupant protection. Its 75-percent rating is one of the lowest of the recent batch of tested cars, which also includes the Audi A3, Kia Cee'd and Ford B-Max. In addition to being one of the safest Volvos produced so far, the V40 is also one of the best-looking Volvo models ever. We already had a chance to sample the new V40 back in June, and we were impressed with the car and what it could do to bolster Volvo's U.S. lineup. Polk investigates Filed under: Car Buying, Audi, Chevrolet, Ford, GM, Honda, Saab, Volkswagen When a brand goes belly-up, it's natural for analysts to wonder where that brand's consumers will turn. General Motors has mothballed more car brands the last decade than most other automakers' have in their entire portfolios, so "Where did [insert brand here] buyers go?" has been a common question asked of The General. According to reports, it didn't do so well at retaining Oldsmobile owners (who supposedly went to Hyundai), or Hummer and Saturn buyers, but did get some return love from Pontiac owners. A consultant with Polk has turned the loyalty lens on Saab. The Polk Disposal Loyalty Methodology tracks owners selling vehicles within six months of buying a new one. In 2010 and 2011, Polk found that when Saab died, owners went right up the middle of the mainstream to Honda. It was close, though, with just 0.2 percent separating Honda from number two Volkswagen. Audi comes in third. After that it's back to the masses with Toyota, Chevrolet and Ford trumping import luxury brands. And if you combine all of the General Motors brands that Saab owners have migrated to, GM more than doubles Honda with a 15.2-percent share, so all the love is not lost.What brands have Saab owners defected to? | Posted: 02 Sep 2012 06:26 AM PDT  Eaton, DOE upgrading and downsizing hybrid power system Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, HybridEaton is working on upgrading its hybrid electric vehicle power control system by reducing the size of the battery 50 percent and improving the total performance of the system and its charge rate while maintaining battery life, fuel economy and overall vehicle performance. The R&D project will be funded jointly between Eaton and a grant from the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E). It's intended to optimize operations of hybrids, from passenger cars to commercials vehicles. The $2.8-million project will be led by Eaton's Innovation Center team in Southfield, MI, who will work with a team from the DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Eaton will leverage its expertise in intelligent power management systems and hybrid technology with the NREL's expertise in battery modeling and prognostics. Eaton thinks improving hybrid power management and extending battery life would work well in other sectors, including community infrastructure, data centers, manufacturing and industrial. Eaton is playing a significant role in several DOE projects in advanced, efficient vehicle and fueling technologies. These include affordable home refueling stations for natural gas vehicles, compressed natural gas, research on waste heat recovery for commercial vehicles and fuel cell expander research. The 100-year old company is also playing a key role in electric vehicle charging station technologies, for example with its DC Quick Charger. Green vehicle technologies are seeing a lot of small start-up companies come and go, and do need support government grants and well-established, solid companies like Eaton. The question for mega-companies like General Electric, Siemens, Panasonic and global automakers could be: Are green vehicle technologies worth it for you? Is this a niche you're testing out for a little while to see if sales and production ramp up enough to make it worth the investments? Eaton would probably say yes, having played a large role in commercial vehicle hybrid systems for several years, but for all the rest of it - electric vehicles and their charging stations, hybrids, natural gas vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles - a lot of investment and long-term strategic is needed.
