Por poner una comparación que nos quede a mano: Se vendieron más Focus en la primera mitad de 2012 que coches totales va a vender SEAT en todo el ejercicio. Otra curiosidad más para ponerle cara a la cifra: se vendieron más Ford Focus en el globo que coches se vendieron en España en el mismo periodo. Con esta cifra, Ford ha logrado colocar a su Focus como el modelo más vendido en lo que va del año en todo el planeta, desbancando al Corolla, que tradicionalmente, aprovechando la estrategia global de Toyota, se había llevado este honor en los últimos años. Ford demuestra así la capacidad de su estrategia de modelos comunes para todos los mercados. A pesar del éxito y la buena cifra, no podemos olvidar que Ford se hunde en Europa, donde prevé unas pérdidas de cerca de 1.000 millones para este ejercicio, si las cosas no cambian. | Posted: 31 Aug 2012 05:09 PM PDT  Hackers bring down Big Oil's computers at Saudi Aramco Filed under: Etc., Transportation Alternatives, Middle East Computer hackers have moved beyond the U.S. military to cyber attack another enemy: Big Oil. Recently, hackers hit Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil producer, and disabled 30,000 of its workstations. A group of "hacktivists" calling themselves Cutting Sword of Justice released a statement on an online bulletin board the day the viral attack was released, taking credit for it. "The disruption was suspected to be the result of a virus that had infected personnel workstations without affecting the primary components of the network," the Saudi Arabia-based company stated in a letter to customers about the cyber attack that was launched August 15. Later in the month, Saudi Aramco announced it had restored full network access, but only after the malware attack, called "Shamoon," reached 75 percent of its workstations. Cutting Sword of Justice said in its online letter that plan was simply to take out 30,000 computers at Saudi Aramco. Since the oil producer is the main source of income for the Saudi government, the hackers say, it should be blamed for "crimes and atrocities" in several countries. The Cutting Sword of Justice had not been heard of before this cyber attack, and security experts have no information on the group. They may get away with it. That excuse might not have worked in grade school, and as Volkswagen proves in its latest ad for the Jetta sedan, telling your boss "my dog ate my keys" is no excuse for being late to work, either. In this clever new 30-second commercial, a frantic Jetta owner struggles to find his keys before realizing that man's best friend has, in fact, digested them. No problem, though - with keyless entry, the fob only needs to be within a certain proximity of the vehicle to do everything from locking and unlocking the doors to rolling up the windows and closing the sunroof. That is an impressive number, spanning back 109 years. The lucky 350 millionth vehicle happens to be a 2013 Ford Focus, which, appropriately enough, is the world's best-selling car for the first six months of this year. The Focus in question has been built at Ford's Rayong, Thailand plant, the automaker's newest production facility. The Blue Oval invested $450 million into opening the complex in May to produce the Focus, a globally sold vehicle. In acknowledging its milestone, Ford has released some other fun numbers to sift through. With all of its global production facilities, those 350 million vehicles produced average out to 8,797 units a day - 367 vehicles every hour, or one new car every 10 seconds. See, right there? Ford probably built a new car in the time it took you to read that last sentence or two. Currently, the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Yukon and Cadillac Escalade all use the two-mode hybrid technology. Historically, the two-mode hybrid models have not sold well, and only yield minor improvements in overall fuel economy. In most applications, the two-mode hybrid system is rated at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg highway. GMI reports that it's unusual for programs like this to be shut down so close to the launch of a new vehicle - the next-generation trucks/SUVs are scheduled to debut for the 2014 model year - but that many sources within GM are not surprised about the move. The video, which hypes Twizy's style quotient by showing its female "driver" checking out Italian leather sofas and a semi-hipster dude cruising through the streets of Ibiza, Spain, calls the Twizy "the missing link between the scooter and the car," and is, as the narrator says, "compact enough to make a Smart ForTwo mad with envy." Renault UK highlights characteristics such as its single-charge range of up to 75 miles and its ability to be fully recharged in less than four hours. Renault, according to a report by Technologic Vehicles, is aiming to expand sales of the Twizy to Turkey, Israel, Japan and Singapore as well as South America after selling about 6,500 vehicles throughout Europe. Auto Shows, Russia, Design/Style We've seen the tactic plenty of times before: an automaker that wants to up its game, so it hires a designer from a brand it seeks to emulate, then releases concepts that make people go "Ooh la la." Lada is the latest, having hired Steve Mattin to be its design head. Mattin is coming off tenures as senior designer at Mercedes-Benz and chief designer at Volvo before emigrating to the Russian side of life (although the company's design bureau is in Milan, Italy). The new Lada he wants to introduce us to is led by an X-shaped front fascia on the Xray concept just unveiled at the Moscow Motor Show. The frontal treatment is to be the signature face for Lada's coming production models, but the Buck Rogers cockpit probably won't make it to the assembly line. Lada is obviously proud of its creation, having unleashed a giant gallery of photos taken from just about every possible angle. The Japanese automaker recently released a couple of videos touting the EV and its evolution through the company's partnership with Tesla Motors. The first five-plus-minute video features engineers discussing the benefits of collaborating with Tesla, including software advancements and battery technology that complemented Toyota's engine-packaging expertise. The other video, clocking in at almost five minutes, delves into the issue of aerodynamics and how engineers cut drag coefficient in an effort to boost range and chip away at drivers' potential feelings of "range anxiety." Toyota used its sleekest wheels, tires and headlamp lenses while customizing the front facia, adding a rear spoiler, removing the roof rack and smoothing out the underbody in order to allow the SUV to better cut the wind. Toyota, which first announced the RAV4 EV in 2010, said in May that the SUV will have a 100-mile single-charge range and will be priced at $49,800, with sales starting by the end of this year. Initial markets will be contained to California and Toyota is only expecting to make and sell around 2,600 vehicles during the first three years. The two-position opening mechanism follows the path laid out by the Mini Cooper convertible and Fiat 500 Cabrio, the driver able to slide the roof back to the leading edge of the C-pillar or send it all the way down into a plinth-like pile atop the trunk hatch. And as with the Mini, the top can be opened at speeds up to 74 mph. The rest of the very popular DS3 hatch has remained intact, but the addition of direct access to Helios has encouraged Citroën to say the DS3 Cabrio is "pleasure non-stop." Siguiendo el programa de personalización del Ferrari 458 Italia realizado por Kahn Design, el estudio de diseño inglés acaba de presentar su programa para el 458 Spider. Como suele ser habitual en Kahn, el cambio más visible son las llantas. Se trata de unas Kahn Monza forjadas de 21 pulgadas, delante, y 22 pulgadas, detrás. Según la nota de prensa, los cambios serían más numerosos: "las nuevas secciones -delantera y anterior-, frenos cerámicos, escudos en las aletas, caja de cambios F1 actualizada y pinzas de frenos de color amarillo". Siendo totalmente sincero, no veo las "nuevas secciones". Y aún menos veo cómo un estudio de diseño (excelente diseñando llantas) actualizaría la caja de cambios F1 de Ferrari... En cuanto a las otras modificaciones que menciona son opciones de la propia Ferrari. Kahn termina mencionando que puede realizar a medida el interior, con colores especiales y bordados a gusto del cliente. El coche de las fotos dispone de un interior de serie. With a Spanking Orchestra, obviously. Proving that the 2013 Toyota Auris has depths we haven't begun to comprehend, Toyota's Japanese ad agency has followed up the head-turning spot with Stav Strashko by kitting an Auris out with "spanking machines" and putting it on display at the Daikanyama Art Street festival. The machines are computer-controlled hands that tap (or spank, if you prefer) the car to the programmed beat. As if that weren't enough, two pairs of free-standing hands, with arms, clap time at either end of the car. If there's a meaning to it, we're not aware of it, but it's fascinating to watch. It isn't often - actually, never - that we get to say, "Ladies and gentlemen, we present The Spankers." Lo habitual es que algo antes se filtren algunas imágenes y detalles, fastidiando y mucho a aquellos responsables del proyecto. Lo que hoy te traemos son las primeras imágenes espía del interior del nuevo Golf de séptima generación. En relación al comercializado hasta ahora, ganará en presencia y el diseño no será tan aburrido. Compartirá mandos de climatización con el Beetle, pero será el encargado de estrenar las nuevas pantallas multifunción asociadas a los equipo de sonido y navegación. Otra de las novedades que se pueden observar son el nuevo volante deportivo y la instrumentación, que mantiene el estilo de las actuales pero parece más completa (con brújula). | Posted: 31 Aug 2012 11:49 AM PDT  Confirmed: McLaren MP4-12C 'Project Alpha' cars being built for Windy City rich Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Performance, MISC It has become clear that the McLaren MP4-12C is car that can match Ferrari and Aston Martin in terms of outright performance, and with vehicles like the X-1 Concept, we're starting to believe that the company can hang with the big boys in terms of special editions, too. Case in point is this six-example "Project Alpha" model that's headed to McLaren's Chicago dealer. The Project Alpha supercar - revealed to Autoblog via a sales brochure in PDF form - represents a stylish amalgam of bits and pieces from the company's Special Operations catalog. "These are cars commissioned by our Chicago dealer in response to customer demand..." A representative of Chicago McLaren was able to confirm that the 2012 model-year special edition is fully loaded in terms of the current options sheet, while also offering all of the functional upgrades due out on the 2013 model: 616 horsepower, revised shift and throttle logic, and a retuned exhaust. The Project Alpha Mac features a host of cosmetic upgrades, too, which set it apart from the, uh, pack. A gloss black finish can be found on the roof, front splitter, rear deck lid and inner surfacing of the wheels, while carbon fiber rear vents and front fender louvers complete the exterior modifications. In the cabin, badging on the driver's door identifies the model, and a host of "Project Alpha" branding hammers the message home. The expected retail price for the MP4-12C Project Alpha is around $335,000, though 4 of the 6 examples have already been spoken for. Michele Shapiro, Public Relations Manager for McLaren North America, tells Autoblog "These are cars commissioned by our Chicago dealer in response to customer demand using options from the existing McLaren Special Operations catalogue." (SpaceX) - basically to simplify his life. "No actual plans under way," he said. "[It] gets unwieldy to have lots of companies with me as the only connection." The holding company may own public shares of both California-based companies. Tesla Motors went public in 2010, and Musk is looking at launching an initial public offering of SpaceX next year. SpaceX has been doing pretty well lately. In May, it became the first private company to send a spacecraft to supply the International Space Station. In August, SpaceX landed a $440 million U.S. government contract to develop spacecraft for future cargo missions. Tesla Motors is looking forward to becoming profitable, and that may happen in 2013 through sales of its Model S battery-powered sedan. Next year will see the launch of its all-electric Model X crossover sport-utility vehicle. Musk also mentioned on a Web chat on Jalopnik that Tesla is thinking about rolling out an electric "supercar." This would cost more than the Tesla Roadster - supercars from brands such as Ferrari and Lamborghini can cost more than $200,000. This will need to wait about four-to-five years, he said. It was going to happen right after the Model X, but it might be a good idea to make a less expensive electric car, since it is "more important to the world that we do a more affordable electric car." As automakers are learning, offering more affordable electric cars is a good idea. A $7,500 federal tax credit is usually available, but on cars like Model S, it probably doesn't make much of a difference. The Model S, which began production in June, has a starting price of $57,400 and can cost more than $100,000, depending on battery pack size and other options. Conservative sheetmetal, a cushy ride, space to spread out and general ease-of-use have historically made the brand's largest sedan popular among the elderly. But the new 2013 Avalon brings with it markedly more expressive styling that suggests Toyota is no longer content to cater to the end-of-life demographic. This shift away from a more traditional value set to edgier design and content is one the entire large non-premium sedan segment seems to be embracing - witness the newly upscale 2014 Chevrolet Impala, as well as the sculpted flanks of the 2012 Hyundai Azera and Ford Taurus. The 2013 model's noticeably svelter sheetmetal, with its bolder front end and flowing greenhouse announce Toyota's intent, but it's features like a Sport mode and paddle shifters that really telegraph the Avalon's newfound vigor and more aspirational mission. And Toyota officials tell Autoblog that the already-shown V6 and hybrid models are just the beginning - a stand-alone sport model is also under serious consideration. A trio of Avalon concepts is headed to SEMA this October, with two of them having been completed internally - unusual for Toyota. The pair of concepts conceived in-house will have a performance bent, with at least one featuring an off-the-shelf supercharger from the company's TRD parts bin in Australia (the same forced-induction setup used in the Lotus Evora S). The house-built Avalons are said to not be as outrageously styled as most SEMA vehicles tend to be, in large measure because Toyota plans to weigh public opinion with an eye toward a production run. When asked if a sportier production Avalon model would be similar to the current Camry model's SE trim, Stephens quickly and decisively said, "No. It has to be more real." By "more real," Stephens means that a hotter Avalon would have to actually offer augmented performance. A production supercharged model? Highly unlikely. A performance tune of the Avalon's 2GR-FE 3.5-liter V6 (268 horsepower, 248 pound-feet of torque) is more plausible, along with a reworked suspension and appropriate visuals. With the 2013 model's switch to electric power steering, it would also be easy to remap the wheel's turn-in and weight. The Georgetown, Kentucky-built Avalon hits dealers this fall in both standard and hybrid flavors.
