Pero para la compañía de Maranello es una hazaña poco menos que imposible, por el coste que ello implica. Y es que el bolsillo de los italianos está centrado en la Fórmula 1, y meterse a correr de manera oficial en LMP1 resulta complicado si no se cuenta con recursos ingentes, al nivel de los impuestos por Audi o Toyota. Pero puede que acabemos viendo un coche con motor Ferrari más pronto que tarde en la categoría LMP de Le Mans. Bajo las nuevas regulaciones del ACO, de las que ya te hablamos aquí si recuerdas, hay bastante más hueco para hacer malabares con las motorizaciones, ya que en lugar de controlar cilindradas o potencias, se controla el gasto de combustible por vuelta. James Glikenhaus, tras fracasar en su intento para que el ACO le dejara correr con su P4/5 Competizione en Le Mans dentro de la categoría de GT, se ha decidido a dar el siguiente paso, y fabricar su propio LMP. Por el momento, esto que ves aquí arriba son meros bocetos conceptuales de Rosso Design, sin valor técnico real, y el propipo Glickenhaus afirma que por el momento todo es una mera intención, en la que está trabajando buscando colaboradores técnicos de entidad suficiente. Pero sería un sueño hecho realidad ver la mecánica híbrida del P4/5 Competizione vestida de rojo en un LMP atractivo, que volviera a luchar por una victoria en las 24 Horas más famosas del planeta. Aquí lo tienes. El resultado final cuenta con un frontal muy cercano al del Clase A, con el que comparte plataforma y componentes. La línea lateral está marcada por la curva suave del techo, y un tercer volumen que encaja bien dentro del conjunto. Tal vez nos quejaríamos de lo mismo que en el CLS: el morro queda "muy vertical", y es que éramos más amigos del estilo más afilado del primer CLS que el que ahora mismo se está imponiendo en toda la gama de "Merche". Como publicábamos ayer, las ventas han caido en Europa (los 27 países de la Unión Europea más Noruega, Suiza e Islandia) han caído un 8,9% (7,1% en lo que va de año) Ford se lleva la peor parte de las marcas generalistas con una bajada de las ventas de 28,9%. Si bien Ford experimentaba una caída una libre, no es el único en caer de alto. Los otros generalistas le siguen con cifras igualmente alarmantes. Opel bajó un 19%, Fiat un 18%, PSA Peugeot Citroën un 13% y Renault un 12%. Todo lo contrario del grupo Volkswagen, cuyas ventas subieron un 1,6%. The Japanese automaker is taking the EV on a tour of the Golden State with its Charge-to-Charge Tour, complete with a web series hosted by Treehugger founder Graham Hill. The tour started this past weekend in Richmond, just across the bay from San Francisco, and will work its way south through the end of the month. The RAV4 will be exhibited at events such as 40th Annual EAA Electric Vehicle Rally and Show in Cupertino before finishing up at the AltCar Expo in Santa Monica, which takes place at the end of next week, September 28-29. Last week, Toyota outlined its loan and lease options while disclosing that the EPA put a single-charge range rating of 103 miles on the Vehicle. The Japanese automaker, which will start sales of the model at some California dealers starting next week, will offer a 36-month lease option for $599 a month with a $3,499 downpayment. For buyers, Toyota will offer an APR loan at 1.9 percent. In May, Toyota said it would price the EV at $49,800 and would make about 2,600 of them through 2014. And late last month, Toyota released a couple videos elaborating on Toyota's work with Tesla Motors on the vehicle and on efforts to cut the RAV4 EV's wind drag as a way to help boost range. In addition to wrapping up their global pickup shootout in Australia, the site also took the time to pit four factory off-road kings against each other. After extending invitations to every manufacturer to send out their most capable pickup, the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, Toyota Tacoma Baja, Ram Power Wagon and Ford F-150 SVT Raptor all showed up to play. General Motors, meanwhile, declined to join the party. Each of the participants threw down in a total of 10 scored events with separate scoring, including old standbys like 0-60, 60-0, payload capacity and fuel economy. But Pickuptrucks.com also partnered up with 4Wheeler Magazine to put the bruisers through some legitimate off-road tests. Each pickup took on a tough sand hill climb as well as a stair climb and a rock scramble. And while their off-road beasts are heart-stopping in their execution and attention to detail, it's the company's Derelict line that really gets us grinning. Icon founder Jay Ward swung by Jay Leno's Garage to show off his latest creation: a 1952 Chrysler/DeSoto wagon with modern bones underneath. Ward started with a Chrysler Town and Country wagon before swapping over a DeSoto front clip for a little more style. The old Hemi V8 was then ditched for a 2010 6.1-liter fuel-injected lump, though Icon kept the original valve covers in order to keep the engine bay looking as period as possible. As with all Derelicts, there's little on the underside of the '52 that hasn't been re-engineered by the Icon team. The car uses a complete modern running gear and a set of six-piston Wilwood brakes bring the family hauler down from speed. | Posted: 18 Sep 2012 04:40 PM PDT  Official: Aston Martin vanquishes Virage, unveils 2013 DB9 Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Paris Motor Show, Aston Martin, Luxury As had been speculated, the brief run of the Aston Martin Virage is over with the arrival of the 2013 Aston Martin DB9, shown above. You'll recall that the Virage was introduced as a bridge between the previous DB9 and the now-defunct DBS. Coupled with the arrival of the new range-topping Vanquish, the '13 DB9 eliminates the middle man, so to speak, merging the Virage's styling elements (as evidenced by the DB9's front fascia) with powertrain and chassis tweaks developed for the Vanquish. You will doubtless note that the DB9 looks like nearly every recent Aston Martin preceding it. We'd agree, while allowing that the familial look is a feature, not a bug. As before, it's offered as a coupe or convertible (Volante). Power in the new DB9 comes from the latest version of Aston Martin's 6.0-liter V12, making 510 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque in this application. Those are increases of 40 hp and 14 lb-ft over the old DB9, as well as 20 hp and 37 lb-ft over the Virage. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, and the car boasts 50/50 distribution of its 3,935-pound curb weight. If you want to shift for yourself, you'll have to make do with the Touchtronic 2's paddles, as there's no traditional manual gearbox offered. Inside, you'll find the same familiar instrument and control layout featured in the current Vantage and the outgoing DB9 and Virage models. A backup camera is now standard. The new DB9 does not receive the updated interior design that premiered in the 2013 Vanquish, so there's now a clear differentiation between the flagship and the "mainstream" V12 car in that respect. If you want to order a new DB9, you may do so immediately. Pricing starts at $185,400 and it hits showrooms in November. The SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) concept involves a lead truck piloted by a professional driver, a follow truck and three following light-duty Volvos. In the most recent testing, Volvo was able to achieve consistent speeds of about 55 miles per hour with the cars driving at a four-meter gap. The idea behind SARTRE is that drivers in a group of cars can basically take their eyes (and foot pedals) off the road when driving long distances because their vehicles would become part of a "road train." The cars are kept at steady speeds and safe distances because of technology - cameras, lasers and radar - that's already used for things like lane maintenance, blind spot alarms and adaptive cruise control. In addition to being able to multitask, drivers benefit from achieving fuel economy increases of up to 20 percent better than driving without a car train because of the aerodynamic gains of having the cars drive so close together. Volvo said in late May that it tested the concept on Spain's public roads. The three vehicles followed a truck for about 125 miles at speeds of about 53 miles per hour, all while traveling six meters apart. Despite that success, Volvo has not announced a timeframe for when this concept will be adapted and available for the general public. The site released a new study called "The Automotive Misery Index," which looks at each state's average household income compared to factors like the cost of fuel, the number of miles driven and the cost of full insurance coverage for a 2012 Honda Accord EX. Surprisingly enough, Mississippi ranked as the state with the highest misery index, thanks in part to low average household income, high average mileage and very expensive insurance. The case claims that the Chinese government has subsidized its automotive export industry in a way that is not allowed under World Trade Organization rules. The U.S. Trade Representative's office is also pushing ahead in a separate WTO case against Chinese duties on exports from the U.S. to China. As a result of the move, China filed a complaint with the WTO against a new U.S. law aimed at combating China's subsidies. The move is called "Countervailing duties" and includes tariffs on tires and steel. The launching of this case comes at a time when President Obama is looking for an edge in key battleground states like Ohio, where jobs are put at risk by China's subsidies. The case allows Obama to take a strong stance one the issue; presidential challenger Mitt Romney has criticized the White House for being too soft with China as it regards defending American jobs. The Ohio auto parts industry directly employs over 50,000 people, and China's undervaluation of its yuan currency has made for cheap Chinese products, which undercut U.S. products. Romney has vowed to declare China a currency manipulator on his first day in office, while current administration officials say much progress has been made without turning up tensions. Due to WTO rules, China's counter-claim has enacted a 60-day period, in which the U.S. and China can talk things out. Everyone's favorite show about three jokers and their automotive exploits is the most widely watched factual TV program - you guessed it - in the world. All told, the original show is viewed in 212 territories around the globe, which is enough to take the honor. Jeremy Clarkson himself accepted the award on behalf of his cohorts and the crew behind Top Gear, saying only, "I am very proud to be involved in such a factual program." Is that a hint of sarcasm we detect, sir? | Posted: 18 Sep 2012 03:04 PM PDT  Report: Mulally says he has no plans to retire from Ford "any time soon" [w/video] Filed under: FordFord President and CEO Alan Mulally was on CBS This Morning talking about a variety of topics ranging from trade tensions between the U.S. and China to the 2013 Ford Fusion, but our interest was piqued when he started talking about his retirement. Just last week, we reported that Mark Fields is being named the Chief Operating Officer at Ford, putting him in a prime position to take over the reins of the company following eventual Mulally's departure. The show's co-host, Charlie Rose, brings up the possibility of Mulally leaving on a high note considering Ford's current status, and Mulally replies "Charlie, squelch that rumor." When pushed even further for a definitive answer, Mulally confirmed that he is "not going to retire any time soon" although he gives no indication as to how long "any time soon" actually is. | Posted: 18 Sep 2012 01:59 PM PDT  Report: NHTSA expanding Hyundai Elantra investigation over possible airbag danger Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Government/Legal, Safety, Hyundai Back in May, we reported on the unlucky driver of a 2012 Hyundai Elantra who claimed his ear was sliced in half following the deployment of his side airbag. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has since looked into the incident, and while it did not issue a recall, it has expanded its investigation to include all fifth-generation (2011 through 2013 model years) Elantra sedans. During the accident, a metal bracket that acts to stiffen the headliner detached from the car and hit the driver according to a report on The Detroit News; this bracket is only used on Elantra models built in South Korea and not those built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) in Montgomery, Alabama. It isn't clear what the mix of imported and domestic Elantras is in the U.S., but NHTSA has not received any other reports of a similar incident. | Posted: 18 Sep 2012 01:59 PM PDT  Biodiesel advocates feel respect after feds raise mandate by 28% Filed under: Biodiesel, Legislation and Policy, USA Brad Albin, president of Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, and Joe Jobe, CEO of the National Biodiesel Board, were thrilled to see the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approve a 28-percent increase in the amount of biodiesel that will be mandated for the nation's diesel engine vehicles in 2013. Up until last year, under the 2007 Renewable Fuels Act, biodiesel had been sort of a stepchild to ethanol. Ethanol enjoyed large mandates with the passage of that bill, but biodiesel was later added at 800 million gallons per year in 2011 and one billion in 2012. That number has been increased to 1.28 billion gallons for 2013. "I want to thank President Obama and his staff for listening to our concerns and recognizing the value and potential of America's Advanced Biofuel - biodiesel," Albin said. National Biodiesel Board's Jobe said the increase "represents a modest increase from the industry's record production last year of nearly 1.1 billion gallons and puts the industry on course for steady, sustainable growth in the coming years." The EPA noted that the biodiesel industry is already producing at a rate consistent with an annual volume of about 1.3 billion gallons. This is bigger than the recycled waste biodiesel of old. Bio-based diesel products are defined as being advanced biofuels derived from biomass sources that include vegetable oils and wastes oils from renewable sources.
