That said, we don't recommend trying this at home (err... your "home" canal, that is). The video, by Devin Graham, perhaps inaccurately named "Ghetto Wakeboarding," shows a pack of suburban kids towing a series of wakeboard-riding daredevils down a rural canal by way of Jeep Wrangler. It looks like a heck of a lot of fun. We say that the video may be inaccurately named, because we could never envision this taking place in the ghetto. As a matter of fact, this looks like a pretty well-to-do group of teens, on a pristine late-model Jeep and filmed on a Canon 5D Mark III- not an inexpensive piece of equipment by any stretch. Exactly how much cheaper the next-gen battery in future versions of the Leaf will be is still carefully protected information, but Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn is making sure that everyone knows a lower-cost Leaf will be here, and soon. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Ghosn said, "There is a second generation of battery coming (online) now...which is less costly than the previous one. We are in a race in which you reduce the costs and adapt the price." Let's see if Nissan will be as proud to come in second to Tesla in this particular competition. Nissan isn't the only automaker looking to reduce the price of plug-in vehicle batteries - Okay, pretty much every OEM with a plug-in program is trying. GM, for example, is investing in Envia on packs that, potentially, could move a $20,000-car up to 300 miles per charge. But that's all in the future, and it's not enough to appease current Leaf owners who are unhappy with their EVs. Nissan has sold more than 35,000 Leafs worldwide, and some owners are happily selling their cars because of complaints with the EVs range and decreasing performance. The National Corvette Museum is planning to build a motorsports park and has already hired Steve Crawford, the architect behind Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California, and The Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington. But the museum hasn't raised enough money to pay for the multimillion dollar facility, which it hopes to have running by 2014. It has $3 million cash for the land and another million for the facility. But it is currently seeking sponsors for the track, up to a $750,000 annual commitment to service the debt on a $10 million debt. | Posted: 17 Sep 2012 04:39 PM PDT  Video: Top Fuel drag racing is a perfect application for high-speed cameras Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Videos, Racing Watching a Top Fuel dragster hurl down the quarter mile in the low four-second mark is exciting enough, but watching the action with a high-speed camera is car porn for gear heads. Finnish magazine Tekniikan Maailma (English translation: Technology World) embedded one of its writers with the race team, and while there is plenty of great footage of what seems to be an average race weekend, the meat of this video is from around the 2:05 mark until about 3:30. The video was shot in such slow motion that as the cars sit in the staging area, one can actually see the firing order of the engine via the exhaust. The driver's reaction time to the green light is also easily evident, as we see that he actually gets on the throttle as the staging lights are still on. When the tree goes green, fire emerges from the exhaust pipes and the side walls of the Goodyear tires wrinkle from the enormous amount of torque exerted from the nitro-powered V8. The most impressive view in the video is when the car is passing through the finish line. The rear tires have an interesting deformation and we can actually see the aerodynamics in action as air trails off the rear wing. At about 40 seconds in length, this video's view of the car's takeoff is actually 10 times longer than the team's complete run which took just 4.19 seconds at around 278 miles per hour.The car's takeoff and acceleration are definitely the highlights of this video, but there are plenty of other interesting things to watch, such as the parachutes being packed before the race, to the fast-motion engine rebuild as the team prepares for the next run. La división Jaguar Land Rover del conglomerado ha visto sus ventas subir un 13%, con 24.060 unidades vendidas. Es menos que los tres últimos meses donde las dos marcas británicas vieron sus ventas aumentar un 35% en mayo, un 39% en junio y 41% en julio. El mes pasado Jaguar vendió 2.960 coches, mientras que Land Rover entregó 21.000 todoterrenos. Las ventas de turismos Tata se establecen en lo que va de año en 47.141 unidades, lo que supone un incremento del 23% con respecto al mismo periodo de 2011. Si bien Land Rover sigue tirando de JLR, Jaguar pone grandes esperanzas en el XF 2.2 litros diésel. Land Rove rpor su parte, que se ha visto desbordado por el éxito del Evoque, corre el riesgo de depender demasiado de ese modelo, pues ha eclipsado por completo el actual Freelander. | Posted: 17 Sep 2012 03:35 PM PDT  Report: CAW reaches tentative agreement with Ford Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, UAW/Unions After seeming to be at an impasse as late as this morning, the Canadian Autoworkers union and Ford have reached a tentative agreement with just hours to go before the CAW's work stoppage deadline. The deal that has been agreed upon will run for the next four years and cover around 4,500 Canadian Ford employees. CAW members will see no base wage adjustments under the plan, though hourly employees will receive lump sum payments. Further, the automaker will create an additional 600 jobs in Canada. The union was unable to secure cost-of-living adjustments for its retired members, however, and there are to be no changes in the overall structure of pension plans. CAW President, Ken Lewenza said of the tentative plan, "It's a damn good deal in these economic times." In the meantime, CAW officials continue to negotiate with General Motors and Chrysler. The union hopes to use the Ford deal as a blueprint for agreements with those companies, as well. This might not be a simple thing to do for a number of reasons. The carsharing prices will go from 35 cents an hour to 38, from $12.99 an hour to $13.99 and from $64.99 to $72.99 per day. These new prices are in effect in all Car2go cities in North America and still include the traditional Car2go benefits of parking, fuel, maintenance and insurance. We asked why Car2go is raising prices now, and Car2go North America communications manager Katie Stafford said this is the first time Car2go has raised its rates "in existing Car2go cities, since we launched in North America nearly thee years ago." She continued: The price increase comes as a result of the rising costs associated with fuel, parking, insurance, and in the case of San Diego - we have invested in building up the EV charging infrastructure so that we can keep the cars charged and ready for members to use. In all cities, new parking solutions have been created to allow members even more convenient parking options. Speaking of electric vehicles, 30 new Car2go EVs are now operational in Portland, OR and more are coming soon to Austin, TX. The higher rates have been in effect in Washington, D.C. and Miami, FL since Car2go started in those cities. At the very least, since Car2go membership cards now work nationwide, you'll now always know how much you're paying per minute. La comercialización, en Europa, se haría a principios de 2014, y luego le seguiría el Turbo Cabriolet. Como es de esperar la potencia máxima debería ser superior a los 530 CV del actual Turbo S, pero llama más la atención que a la ya tradicional tracción integral de los 911 Turbo se le unirá una dirección a las cuatro ruedas. No es la primera vez que un coche utiliza un sistema de dirección a las cuatro ruedas, ya sea de tipo pasivo o activo, pero para Porsche será toda una primicia. Y el 911 Turbo no será el único, pues Porsche ya ha confirmado que el 918 Spyder dispondrá de una dirección activa a las cuatro ruedas. A baja velocidad, las ruedas traseras girarán en el sentido contrario de las delanteras para mejorar la manejabilidad, mientras que a gran velocidad girarán en el mismo sentido para una mayor estabilidad. They sandwiched 385 Prancing Horses to trot around the UK's Silverstone Circuit, thereby fulfilling the requirements of driving at least two miles no further than two car lengths apart, with a Guinness rep on hand to count the cars at the beginning and the end of lap. The record was broken a year later when 490 Ferraris lapped Japan's Suzuka circuit. This year we heard Ferrari UK was trying to do retake the crown at the Silverstone Classic, but with a nice, round 1,000 cars. The Classic was held over the weekend, and the organizers charge got admirably close to the target: as certified by Guinness, 964 Ferraris traipsed around Silverstone on Saturday and set a record that will probably stand at least another four years. Sure, they got a little leeway with that two car-lengths rule, but nobody's quibbling in light of the spectacle of $162 million worth of sports cars with a combined displacement of 5,000 liters showing off 493,150 slow-rolling horsepower. IndyCar happens to be at the cross-section of this debate, with one-third of its fifteen races run on oval tracks, including the season finale at Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway). Going into the race, Will Power carried a 17-point lead in the overall standings. The championship was his to lose, and lose it he did. While running in 12th place, Power "caught a seam," which sent the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car into a barrier, and seemingly out of the race. The championship was now in the hands of Ryan Hunter-Reay, who needed to finish in sixth in order to claim the championship by just one point. The crash left Power helpless; the driver could only watch the race from his team's transporter and hope that Hunter-Reay would finish worse than sixth. Ahead of Hunter-Reay was Tony Kanaan, who crashed on lap 241, resulting in a red flag. Upon the lap 244 restart, the 31-year-old Floridian was running in third, and lost two positions in those final laps. However, a crash by Takuma Sato ensured a 4th place finish for Hunter-Reay, and a three point lead in the final season standings. The stoppage will see a total of four Honda plants go dark for two days, thanks in part to the fact that local dealers have been under attack and can't receive shipments. Mazda, meanwhile, plans to close its facility in Nanjing for a total of four days, starting on Tuesday. The report sites Luo Lei, the deputy secretary general of the China Automobile Dealers Association, as saying many dealerships have shut down after a few were vandalized. One dealership saw a Honda Civic set on fire in Shanghai. Lei also said buyers are boycotting Japanese goods, especially cars, over safety concerns. Honda and Mazda aren't alone, either. Toyota and Panasonic both reported fire damage at their facilities, and one Toyota dealership was set ablaze as well. Protesters overturned cars and smashed windshields in some cities as well, as the September 18 anniversary of the Manchurian Incident approaches. The Japanese automaker entered a souped-up Nissan Leaf in an all-electric-vehicle race at Japan's Sportsland Sugo earlier this month, with hopes of knocking off proverbial favorite Tesla in the 50-kilometer race. The Nissan Leaf Nismo RC was customized with a groovy, sleeker body as well as having its motor shifter around to make the car rear-wheel drive. The battery pack was moved to the middle for better handling. Additionally, Nissan added more crumple zones and automatic electric-power shut-down capabilities the event that the car got munched. The good news as that the car didn't. The bad news is that it finished second to a Tesla Roadster. "Tesla's speed on the straights was much more impressive than we anticipated," driver Tsugio Matsuda said (in translation). Petty, 52, serenaded Patrick, 30, on Speed Channel's NASCAR Trackside show before her appearance as a guest. In the video, Petty is seen sitting on a bed wearing GoDaddy.com attire with other Patrick memorabilia in the room including a cardboard cutout of her face, and in stripped-down his country ditty, he sings "Danica, you're the girl that drives my dreams." Being a good sport to Petty's creepy antics, Patrick showed up on the show with a 1995 picture of a long, wavy-locked Petty (which he referred to as his "Yanni years") that she asked him to sign. This video stands in stark contrast to Petty's December, 2009 video about Patrick where he sarcastically congratulated her and says she will be taking a seat away from someone who "potentially coulda been a great race car driver." Nissan's dart-shaped moldbreaker was last seen at Le Mans in June, where the prototype racer was accidentally taken out of competition by a Toyota prototype. Driver Satoshi Motoyama famously tried in vain to resuscitate his damaged racer for 45 minutes, a struggle that has since been labeled by many as one of the most heroic and touching "agony of defeat" moments in motorsports history. Addressing what it says is "unfinished business," Nissan has confirmed that GT Academy vet Lucas Ordonez and ALMS PC class champ Gunnar Jeannette will race the car at Petit Le Mans, the ALMS series finale, at Road Atlanta on October 17-20. The Nismo team trio that fielded the DeltaWing at Le Mans - Satoshi Motoyama, Marino Franchitti and Michael Krumm - are apparently otherwise committed, so the driving duties for the 10-hour, 1,000-mile enduro will fall to Ordonez and Jeannette. Better still, Nissan reports that the DeltaWing could return to race as part of the ALMS in 2013. As we previously reported, the ALMS and Grand-Am racing series are merging for 2014, and Nissan says "provision will be made" for the DeltaWing in the combined series new regulations, opening the door for it to compete for points. | Posted: 17 Sep 2012 11:45 AM PDT  Report: WSJ: Feds turned down GM request to sell its remaining shares [w/video] Filed under: Government/Legal, GMThe Wall Street Journal released a report today, which indicated that the U.S. Treasury Department is unwilling to sell off its stake in General Motors, because to do so now would lead to a very large loss on the investment for the government. GM proposed the buyback plan to the Treasury Department, earlier this year. The Treasury currently holds a 26.5-percent stake in GM, or roughly 500 million shares. WSJ reported Friday that the government would stand to lose about $15 billion if it sold all of its GM stock for the roughly $24 the shares now command. Further, the share price would need to $53 before the Treasury would be able to break even on its investment in the automaker. The newspaper did report that the Treasury might be willing to sell off its GM assets if the share price was in the $30-range.
