Video: Chris Harris capitulates on his hatred for the Mazda MX-5 Miata... sort of
Filed under: Convertible, Budget, Performance, Videos, MazdaChris Harris and the Mazda MX-5 Miata have a bit of a checkered past. The infamous auto writer once sank his teeth into the little Japanese convertible and didn't stop until he drew blood, saying he was "completely ambivalent to the existence" of the machine, and that it drove "with all the precision of a boneless limb." For reasons that don't need enunciation, Harris has received plenty of flack over those comments. Now he's taken the time to give the Miata another shot to see if he was misguided in his derision. What's the verdict? Harris says he may have been a little too hard on the Miata on the first go around. But that doesn't mean he's recanting his original point of view. He's still not sold on the fact that the Mazda is a legitimate sports car. We would counter by saying that may be true for someone who parks a Ferrari 599 in his garage every night. The rest of us are happy to get our hands on anything that even remotely resembles a proper-handling machine. Check out the video below.Continue reading Chris Harris capitulates on his hatred for the Mazda MX-5 Miata... sort ofChris Harris capitulates on his hatred for the Mazda MX-5 Miata... sort of originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 20:00:00 EST. Campaign adviser's tough job: Get Mitt Romney to support EVs
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy, USA, Better Place If you're campaigning for Mitt Romney and believe in the electrification of transportation, you're kind of between a rock and a hard place. While Romney previously had supported electric and other non-petroleum vehicles, more recently, he's shifted his focus to freedom from foreign oil through domestic, clean oil drilling. Once upon a time, after all, Romney said the Chevrolet Volt was an "idea whose time has not come." Dan Senor, one of Romney's closest political advisers, would like this presidential candidate to support EVs - and Israel - and has co-written a 2009 bestseller about the power of plug-ins. Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle makes the point that advanced new technologies like oil-free cars could transform entire global industries. Many countries in the Arab world are completely dependent on oil and should be going for biotech, medical devices, cleantech, greentech, and IT, according to Senor. He disagrees with the Romney campaign's argument that developing domestic carbon energy reserves would spawn an economic resurgence. Senor, 41, has been active in the Republican party for years. He's been advising Romney since 2006 and has always thought Romney shares his views on the Middle East. More recently, Senor was named senior adviser to vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan. Senor co-authored "Start-Up Nation" with American-Israeli columnist Saul Singer, and it was written, at least partly, to garner more support for Israel in the U.S. Singer is married to Senor's sister, Wendy Senor Singer, director of the Jerusalem office of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, a powerful pro-Israel lobby. Senor's books and recent lectures have given a nod to Better Place, the Palo Alto, CA-based EV charging network company that's building the first network for electric cars in Israel. Better Place CEO and founder Shai Agassi was born in Israel and is depicted in the book as being the epitome of forward-thinking Israeli entrepreneurs. In January 2011, Agassi rode with Romney in an electric car during Romney's trip to Israel. Senor has been playing a role as a critical emissary for Romney to Israeli leadership and the Jewish-American community. Senor has planned tours of Israel for Romney and other high-profile GOP leaders. The pressure's on for Senor now - will Romney win the White House job, and if he does, would he support Israel's role as an EV and greentech leader?Campaign adviser's tough job: Get Mitt Romney to support EVs originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 19:35:00 EST. Gallery: SRT ViperGallery: SRT Viper GTS Launch EditionGallery: SRT Viper 2013 Share TweetMás imágenes de los SRT Viper, versión "básica" incluida originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 18:41:00 EST. Report: Texas toll road approved for 85-MPH speed limit
Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety The Texas Transportation Commission has approved a new 85-mile-per-hour speed limit for a stretch of highway in the Lone Star State. The new high-speed section of highway is a 41-mile stretch of State Highway 130 that is several miles east of Interstate 35. This now makes Texas the state with the highest speed limit in the country. Texans have already voiced their support for the move, as the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio has become ever more bogged down with traffic. This move would certainly alleviate a lot of that congestion. Meanwhile, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been vocal in its disapproval of the move, though there is not much that it can do. According to Russ Rader, spokesman for IIHS, "The research is clear that when speed limits go up, fatalities go up." In support of this notion, a 2009 report from the American Journal of Public Health found that between 1995 and 2005, more than 12,500 deaths had connection with increased speed limits on American roads. The 85-mph stretch will give drivers a leg up speed-wise over the 75 mph speed limit found on the fastest roads in most states. The only other roads close to this new Texas road are several highways in West Texas and Utah, which have 80-mph speed limits. While the data brought forth by the IIHS points to an increase in fatalities at higher speeds, it should be noted that new cars in the last decade are safer and faster than ever. Many European cars are tested at Autobahn speeds, and have the safety equipment to match. These roads may not be ideal for older vehicles, but many drivers of new cars would likely admit to driving at 80+ mph speeds already. It will be interesting to see if this is the first of more high speed roads not only in Texas, but elsewhere.Texas toll road approved for 85-MPH speed limit originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 18:34:00 EST. OnStar bug forces GM to halt deliveries on 60,000 vehicles
Filed under: Safety, Technology, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GM, GMCGeneral Motors stopped the sale of certain 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox and Volt models as well as 2013 Buick Verano units, GMC Terrain crossovers and 2012 Cadillac SRX, XTS and ATS vehicles due to a problem with the onboard OnStar crash notification system. According to Automtotive News, the affected units would not notify emergency responders of an accident in any collision that did not actuate the vehicle's airbags. That could include rear-end impacts. GM says the software glitch won't take long to address and doesn't impact the crash notification system in accidents that involve deployed airbags. The trouble doesn't prevent the airbags from deploying, either. All told, the stop-sale covers around 60,000 vehicles already on dealer lots. GM has already cleared some of those for sale thanks to a remote reflash sent through the OnStar system. Automotive News reports that unfortunately, the fix hasn't worked on every vehicle, and dealers are having to manually install the fix on the remainder of the impacted units. GM expects the repair to be completed by the end of September.OnStar bug forces GM to halt deliveries on 60,000 vehicles originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 16:31:00 EST. Official: Renault donates all-electric Popemobile to His Holiness
Filed under: Minivan/Van, Etc., Europe, Renault, Electric Popes know how to travel in style, as the long list of iconic Popemobiles can attest to. In recent years, His Holiness Benedict XVI - aka the "Green Pope" - has been trying to clean up those bubbly vehicles with alternative powertrains. He wanted a plug-in hybrid from Mercedes-Benz or a solar-powered car, but those have yet to come to fruition. In July, the Vatican did get an all-electric vehicle from NWG Zero. The latest holy roller is a new all-electric vehicle from Renault. Modified with help from Gruau, the Kangoo Maxi Z.E. was donated to the Vatican by Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn at the Holy Father's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. The Pope's bodyguards can ride in EV style, too, since Renault donated a second EV, that one decked out in blue and white, to the Corps of Gendarmerie of Vatican City. The EVs use lithium-ion batteries for an estimated range of 105 miles on the lenient European NEDC test cycle. The interiors "are fitted with two particularly comfortable separate seats at the rear," says Renault. The roof opens, too, in case His Holiness would like to stand and wave at people who don't get free electric cars.Continue reading Renault donates all-electric Popemobile to His HolinessRenault donates all-electric Popemobile to His Holiness originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 18:02:00 EST. New Nissan minivan uses brake power for lights?
Filed under: Hybrid, NissanNissan put the new Serena S-Hybrid on sale in Japan recently and now we're learning a bit more about how "smart" and "simple" the hybrid powertrain is. Nissan proudly emphasized those aspects of the powertrain when it first talked about the details of the new minivan, and now we learn that the electric part of the powertrain is used mostly to ... power the tail lights? Nissan's official statement on the subject says the Serena S-Hybrid is equipped with "a simple and compact hybrid system. It mounts an upgraded version of the ECO motor used in the existing Serena, and serves as an auxiliary motor to increase power output and power generation capabilities."Automotive News says the the Serena's S-Hybrid regenerative braking system mostly converts kinetic energy into electricity to power the minivan's electrical systems, like the taillights, and thus lets the engine operate in a more efficient manner. The end result? Improved fuel economy of up to 10 percent, or around $1,900.New Nissan minivan uses brake power for lights? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 17:56:00 EST. Confirmed: Ford to add 1,200 workers at Flat Rock plant
Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Plants/Manufacturing, Ford With the 2014 Mazda6 being built in Japan, Ford is filling the production capacity at its Flat Rock Assembly plant (previously known as AutoAlliance International) with the 2013 Ford Fusion. The new Fusion goes on sale this fall, and while early versions of the car will continue to be made in Hermosillo, Mexico, production will switch to the Flat Rock, Mich. plant early next year. Currently, that plant only builds the Ford Mustang, and to prepare for the higher volume that the Fusion will bring, Ford has announced it will be adding 1,200 new jobs to the plant in addition to a $555 million upgrade to the paint and body shops. Not only will this upgrade allow Flat Rock to be a more flexible plant, it will also allow it to be more environmentally friendly with a 3-Wet paint process that creates fewer pollutants and lowers overall paint costs. The plant is still owned 50/50 between Ford and Mazda, but it will be managed 100 percent by Ford Motor Company going forward. Once Fusion production begins, Flat Rock Assembly will employ a total of 2,900 workers.Continue reading Ford to add 1,200 workers at Flat Rock plantFord to add 1,200 workers at Flat Rock plant originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 17:35:00 EST. Opinion: Tesla Is Shooting For The Stars
Filed under: Sedan, Tesla, ElectricLaunching A Space Ship Is A Snap Compared To A Car Is it easier to put a man in space or an electric vehicle in every garage? Ask Elon Musk, the iconoclastic entrepreneur who heads up both Tesla Motors and SpaceX, the first private space venture to launch a vehicle and successfully dock it with the International Space Station. The passing of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, comes to mind when thinking about Musk's dual quest to remake the auto industry with electric vehicles and to privatize space travel. Back when Armstrong took that first small step, it was thought that if we could put a man on the moon, it was proof there was nothing mankind couldn't accomplish, including stamping out poverty and curing cancer. If history is a guide, it turns out it's easier to do the moon shot than tackle a myriad of pressing social issues. That is precisely what Musk may eventually discover - namely that it is far easier to build spaceships than it is to build an electrically powered family car that will appeal to the masses. Matt DeLorenzo is the former editor-in-chief of Road & Track and has covered the auto industry for 35 years, including stints at Automotive News and AutoWeek. He has authored books including VW's New Beetle, Chrysler's Modern Concept Cars, and Corvette Dynasty.
