| Posted: 09 Sep 2012 05:22 PM PDT  Honda CR-Z facelift teased on Japanese site Filed under: Hybrid, Honda On September 27, a date that will see us sifting through the action on the Paris Motor Show floor, it looks like the Honda CR-Z will show off its mid-cycle refresh. Honda's Japanese web site has a short slideshow revealing three new features of the next little hybrid hatchback. The scant bit of text is all in Japanese, naturally, so we don't know how the "Life Design Hybrid" is being pitched. While we couldn't make out any words or characters that suggested the CR-Z will become a widebody twin-turbo V6, some LED DRLs, snazzy new wheels and a button marked "S+" have been given away. The CR-Z already has a Sport setting, so if S+ brings a higher grade of performance, perhaps that could mean a few more hardcore bits and a goosing of its horsepower will come in tow. Using nothing but some very impressive fabrication skills, some sheet metal and his ingenuity, the guy turned his budget Japanese cruiser into an homage to the Lamborghini Reventon. Sure, the proportions are a little off. And yes, the front end looks a bit wonky, but the finished product is better than we could manage. In this case, the DC quick-charge stations that are currently being installed near highways along the U.S. West Coast - and other locations - can't communicate with precision with electric vehicles to calculate the correct state of charge (SOC) percentages and will likely overstate the true amount of charge in the EV, according to one electric-vehicle advocate. And that could cause drivers to miscalculate their cars' available range and, well, come up short. Tom Saxton, vice president of Plug In America, wrote on his blog about his experience quick-charging his Nissan Leaf at an AeroVironment DC Quick Charge station in Washington State. Saxton said that, charging at stations like the one he used don't know exactly how much energy is in the car's pack and so can display an almost 100-percent charge, but the true amount of energy in the pack can be closer to 80 percent. For a car like the Leaf with an EPA-rated 73-mile single-charge range, that could leave a driver about 15 miles short of his or her intended location. Part of the issue is that when using a fast charger, a Leaf will only "fill up" to an 80 percent charge after starting from less than a 50-percent charge. This means that what appears "full" on the station doesn't mean "full" in the car, and there's no way to get the station to figure out what the actual situation is. The solution? UK-based customizer Prindiville will gladly whip you up a new officially-licensed, pint-sized version of General Motors' fuel-thirsty off roader. This machine doesn't get its power from a heady V8, though. Instead, the company built the baby hummer as a plug-in hybrid with a 60-mile range. Using a 72-volt driveline coupled to an as-yet named internal combustion engine and a set of lithium-ion batteries, the Electric Hummer can whir around town on the buyer's choice of either 15 or 18-inch wheels. The driver gets to enjoy a set of full-LCD gauges to help keep an eye on remaining power, and a Pioneer head unit supplies passengers with tunes. Prindiville currently plans to turn out 25 examples of the Electric Hummer, each with a price tag of $40,000. Still, something tells us that if the machines turn out to be wildly popular, there won't be anything stopping the company from turning out a few more. Hoy te traemos un nuevo vídeo tomado de YouTube, donde aparece la nueva bestia V12 de motor central y chasis de composite salida de Maranello. Sigue llena de un complejo y completo camuflaje, pero sólo por escucharla y curiosearla ya nos merece la pena perder el medio minuto escaso de vídeo. Filed under: Europe, Alfa RomeoAlfa Romeo has been threatening to re-enter the North American market for a while now, and the latest word, via Automotive News, is that Alfa has whiplashed back to being off again, for now. Then there's that thing about Volkswagen maybe buying Alfa from parent Fiat, though that's also likely on hold until the voracious German gets its latest acquisitions settled in. Fiat has repeatedly denied that Alfa is for sale. Sergio Marchionne will lay out the newest plan for Alfa Romeo at the end of October, about the time we were supposed to be getting a compact crossover. The 4C will still probably wow the crowd at the North American International Auto Show in January, but actual vehicle rollout and sales plans are shifting. That's partially due to increased slack in European demand for Alfa Romeo vehicles, which have required volume projection adjustments. For now, the 4C will likely lead the charge, with the next-generation Giulia being a good bet for the next Alfa on offer. We should also see the Alfa Romeo sibling to the new Jeep Liberty that's rolling out next year. The Alfa version will follow in 2014 and be built alongside the Jeep in Toledo. Pero si bien el Ka es el segmento A por antonomasia de Ford, cubriendo el hueco demandado en Europa de un coche más pequeño y más barato que el Fiesta, lo cierto es que no está funcionando comercialmente como se esperaba de él, y además incumple la premisa de Ford de crear modelos globales, válidos para todos los mercados. Durante el evento "Go Further" que Ford protagonizó esta semana en Ámsterdam, Alan Mulally fue preguntado insistentemente por las posibilidades de que el Figo se convirtiera en una opción de segmento A económico, situado un peldaño por debajo del Fiesta. Tras las pruebas en las que participó con Ford con un Fiesta WRC oficial hace unos días en un circuito francés, hoy ha sido el día en el que el piloto polaco ha vuelto a participar en una carrera oficial. Ha sido en el Rally Ronde Gomitolo Di Lana, donde ha vencido con comodidad a los mandos de un Impreza WRC S12B. (La prueba está por concluir, pero de acuerdo con los cronos, Kubica ya ha ganado). Robert concedió una entrevista en exclusiva al canal italiano Sky, que te hemos dejado tras el salto, donde relata cómo ha sufrido estos meses, pero nunca ha tirado la toalla. Dice el polaco que ahora tiene que plantearse en qué especialidad volver a correr (rallyes o F1), pero que todavía le queda parte de la rehabilitación por completar. Si se encuentra a tope físicamente tal vez se plantee la F1, pero si no, está visto que en los rallyes no le faltarán ofertas. Kubica se pone como fecha límite 2014 para decidir, con lo que en 2013 debería completar su preparación física y comenzar a entrenarse ya con coches. Parece descartado un retorno por tanto a la F1 el año que viene, por más que se siga rumoreando, pues el propio piloto lo ha descartado. A graphic designer by day, Joel Fletcher has an incredible talent of using his work skills to create some original automotive posters. Fletcher's drawings can be found (and purchased) on the Hive Facebook page starting at $12 plus shipping. Fletcher says that he has a "soft spot" for Japanese cars, which is obvious in his selection of posters, but he can create a unique work of art for any car, even taking special requests. Some of the highlights displayed on the Facebook page include old racecars and the evolution of cars like the Toyota Supra, Mazda Miata and Mazda RX-7. Our personal favorite, however, is a calendar he made featuring famous movie/television show cars including the A-Team van, James Bond's Aston Martin and the Ford Gran Torino from Starsky and Hutch. Another creative poster he made shows the Toyota GT-86 and Subaru BRZ on a canvas that can be hung either way to have one car right-side up and the other appear as its mirror image. He creates all his images using vector graphics, and each car takes between 40 minutes to over an hour to complete. There's even a video demonstrating how he takes an image of a Bugatti Veyron and turns it into one of his poster photos. | Posted: 09 Sep 2012 08:43 AM PDT  ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons talks hot rods, cool cars Filed under: Classics, Etc., Cadillac, Ford, Design/StyleBilly Gibbons is well known for his music, his super-long beard and, since the Eliminator 1933 Ford Coupe debuted on MTV in 1983, hot rods. The man is fanatical about his cars and he sat down with PowerBlock Magazine to talk about rods and rock 'n' roll. Of the famous Eliminator coupe, Gibbons says he commissioned So-Cal Speed Shop to build the car in 1976. Seven years later, it starred in the band's "Gimme All Your Lovin'" video and then "Legs" and "Sharp Dressed Man." Gibbons tells the story of another of his rods, CadZZilla. The creation of the lead sled involved a dice game on the Mexican border, former GM designer Larry Erickson, Boyd Coddington and the obligatory cocktail napkin. The list of Gibbons' hot rods is longer than his facial hair, but there's apparently room in the garage for more. His latest creation, Wiskeyrunner, is another '33 Ford, but when So-Cal finishes with it, the unique rod will look nothing like Eliminator. Decía yo que esta parte que venía ahora del campeonato iba a ser muy complicada para Alonso, que aunque llegaba líder y se ha caracterizado siempre por saber correr con la calculadora en la mano, tenía que plantar cara a rivales por el campeonato que corren con coches mejores y más rápidos sobre el papel. Button, Hamilton, Vettel y Webber podían barajarse carrera tras carrera para evitar que Fernando mantuviera la ventaja, y acabar por fastidiarle el tercer título. Pero el GP de Italia que ha acabado hace ya un buen rato ha demostrado que Alonso no sólo está haciendo una temporada magnífica con el material que tiene, sino que los rivales tampoco están teniendo su año. Y es que hace carreras que los motores Renault están dándonos qué pensar. Fallan, se rompen, y encima no ofrecen velocidad punta suficiente. Stuk voor stuk droom-autoculturen, waar ze auto's poetsen maar vooral ook rijden en er mee spelen. Een fantastische videoclip om dit allemaal in vast te leggen ontbreekt natuurlijk niet.
