| Posted: 08 Aug 2012 05:36 PM PDT  Motorsports: Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 1 is the beginning of a new era Filed under: Motorsports 2012 marks a special year for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. For the first time in the event's 96-year history, the entire course is paved, beginning a new era in the Race to the Clouds. While many are bemoaning the loss of the gravel and dirt (us included - the dirt was great for photography), the fresh pavement is bringing plenty of new faces and cars to the event. Interest in this year's hill climb was so great that organizers are contemplating expanding the event to two days for 2013. Much of the new vehicles for this year are in the Electric division. Normally filled with one or two entrants, this class features some of the most interesting cars this year, including two Mitsubishi iMiEVs, a prototype from Toyota Motorsports GmbH and a BMW E36 M3 converted by EV West. The biggest news, however, is that reigning Unlimited Class champion Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima has swapped out his Suzuki SX4 Hill Climb Special for an all-new machine called the Monster Sport E-Runner. Our curiosity about this incredible looking vehicle was so great that we skipped out on our usual subjects from the Unlimited and Time Attack divisions to see the new electric racer in action along with the Pikes Peak Open, Stock Car, Exhibition and Vintage classes. The Japanese driver didn't disappoint, setting blistering times of 4:14.8 and 4:13.3 in the two practice sessions. To compare, Tajima set times of 4:45.9 and 4:33.8 last year, albeit those were partially on dirt. Unfortunately, another driver in the Electric division didn't fare so well. Hiroshi Masuoka, driving the Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution, overshot a corner and crashed in the second practice session. Also of note is the Porsche 911 GT3R being driven by Frenchman Romain Dumas in the Pikes Peak Open division, the Lexus IS F CCS-R being driven by Ken Gushi and a mean looking Lister Knoop/Mann Special being driven by Rick Knoop in the Exhibition class. A little more in-depth than the recent EV 101 infographic, today's image deals with electric vehicle purchases - where they're doing relatively well (Norway), why they're not selling like hotcakes (too expensive) - as well as items like how gas prices could affect those sales ($6 gas would boost the numbers? You don't say). Then there's this: "If this year's EV sales projection is correct, that's still only 0.45% of the 14 million cars to be sold in 2012." That's a harsh truth. There are some errors (for example, the U.S. hasn't yet spent $529 million on the Fisker Automotive loan, just $193 million to date. Also, it's a loan, not a grant), but it's still a good, concise look at the state of plug-ins in the middle of 2012. Imaginatively named GRID 2, the new game will feature "a selection of handpicked automotive icons spanning four decades and three continents," racing "on beautiful city streets, licensed circuits or knife-edge mountain roads." The game developer has been publicly busy lately with Dirt and Formula 1 concerns like F1 2012 and F1 Race Stars. That said, its four-year-old racing game headliner hasn't made headlines since two of its three online servers were taken down last year. This should make plenty of gamers happy with Codemasters' focusing on racing games and its coming Racenet online hub. Along with the announcement, Codemasters has released a brand-new trailer for GRID 2, which you can watch below. Como viene siendo habitual en todos los Alpina, este derivado del Serie 3 recibirá importantes modificaciones que afectarán a la estética, bastidor y los motores. Por ahora no hay detalles sobre la mecánica ni las prestaciones, pero algunos rumores apuntan a una variante potenciada del bloque empleado en los 335i. Sales are healthy and recovery from the multi-year slump brought on by the global economic meltdown of 2008 is well on its way, with domestic sales projected to reach as high as 14.5 million vehicles. We even heard a rumor that Ford would soon be installing cash machines in its executive lavatories that dispensed well-worn twenties. Okay, so that last part isn't true. But the first is also suspect, according to new forecasts from analysts. As reported by Reuters, LMC Automotive, formerly a branch of JD Power, has revised its 2012 prediction down to 14.3 million vehicles, matching that of rival consultant Polk. LMC also cut its forecast for 2013, from 15.2 million to 15 million, though it does expect the U.S. auto industry to be back at 2007's 17-million-unit level by 2017. Other projections are even more conservative, according to the report. Sean McAlinden, chief economist for the Center for Automotive Research, is hedging his bets, pointing out that housing usually recovers first after a recession, while this year upwards of 40 percent of economic growth has been auto-related. Allmendinger says he was out with a "buddy" following several sponsor commitments, and revealed to his friend that he was not sleeping well. Allmendinger says he was struggling to stay awake when "One of his friends said, 'Oh I have an energy pill that I take for working out'." That evening occurred three days prior to testing positive for amphetamine during a random drug test at Kentucky Speedway on 6/29. NASCAR officials determined what they found on him were the same chemical compound as found in Adderall. Allmendinger was quiet regarding that evening up until this point. "I had to do some soul searching before I came out publicly" he told Fox Sports. Per NASCAR's no-tolerance policy, Allmendinger was suspended from the following weekend's Daytona race. According to the suspended driver, it had not even occurred to him that the pill he took three days before the race was a banned substance. Following the suspension, Allmandinger, who was in his sixth year in NASCAR, lost his ride. He was released from Penske racing and is now taking the steps to get back into racing. | Posted: 08 Aug 2012 03:51 PM PDT  Mitsubishi i-MiEV recalled in Canada for air bag safety issue Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Mitsubishi, North America A minor but important problem with the sensors in the self-diagnostic software used by the Safety Restraint System (SRS) system in some Mitsubishi i-MiEV models in Canada has led to a recall notice from Transport Canada. The recall only affects 49 vehicles and is important because it can cause the airbags to not work. Specifically, since the sensors are incompatible, the SRS warning light can turn on. If, then, the "vehicle were [to] continue being operated with the warning lamp illuminated, the inflatable curtain and side impact airbags may not deploy or the front airbags may deploy late. This could result in an increased risk of injury to an occupant during a crash." Transport Canada says dealers will replace the sensors with updated versions. We've asked Mitsubishi if this same problem might lead to a recall in the U.S. but have not yet heard back. But curiosity over what led to his departure is still keen, and this latest story from Bloomberg offers further insight into the situation. While we all know that Ewanick was something of a rogue within GM's still-conservative corporate culture, cutting deals that broke with tradition, mouthing off about Facebook, and deciding that Super Bowl ad rates are too high, that's ostensibly what he was hired to do. But it seems that perhaps his methods may have been a bit too much for GM CEO Dan Akerson and other execs. Bloomberg says Akerson scolded Ewanick after he publicly cursed at a conference, giving him the "Farley Award," a Ford Blue Oval inscribed with the name of Ford marketing head Jim Farley. The dubious honor was a reference to Farley's infamous f-bomb directed at GM in Once Upon A Car, a book written by New York Times reporter Bill Vlasic. Akerson reportedly used to award to remind GM employees to always behave professionally, according to the report. But it was Ewanick's record-breaking sponsorship deal with British soccer powerhouse Manchester United that was his ultimate undoing, according to the report. Apparently the $559 million deal was a series of separate sponsorships divvied up among different budgets "to avoid his boss' spending limits," according to Bloomberg, a charge that Ewanick denied. Montado sobre la carrocería del C-Max y bajo la denominación Energi, este modelo entra de lleno en la categoría de los eléctricos de autonomía extendida. El C-Max Energi será parecido tecnológicamente al Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera ya que además del motor eléctrico, cuenta con uno de gasolina que alimenta las baterías cuando se agotan. But it's still something pretty special. What you're looking at here is the Alpina B3, a hotter version of the new F30 3 Series that will be done in a similar fashion to the B5, B6 and B7 models that we've long drooled over. Signature Alpina changes like the revised lower front fascia, rear lip spoiler and modified exhaust are clearly evident on this prototype, as are newly designed wheels. No, they aren't the lovely 20-spoke Alpina wheels found on all the other models, but who knows, things could change before the car goes into production. What's more, who knows if the 3 Series body can even handle 21-inch rollers. Details? None right now.
