Dan Akerson ha demostrado cómo hacerlo, al comprar esta misma semana acciones por valor de medio millón de dólares (unos 407.000€) de General Motors. Esto le ha dado acceso a ampliar su paquete accionarial del gigante de Detroit en 25.000 acciones. Tras una de las peores semanas que recordamos de GM desde su salida de la bancarrota, con el despido de su jefe de marketing y la salida del diseñador jefe de Opel, parece que Akerson quiere demostrar su implicación en GM a largo plazo y hacer ver que cree en su compañía. | Posted: 09 Aug 2012 05:24 PM PDT  Motorsports: 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 2 brings out the big guns [w/video] Filed under: Motorsports During the first practice day of the 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb we checked out Monster Tajima's new electric-powered E-runner and watched the Vintage and Exhibition divisions roar up the mountain. Our second day, however, was reserved for the fastest of the groups - Unlimited, Time Attack and Open Wheel - which were running in the bottom portion of the course that determines qualifying times. While one might think that the Unlimited class would be less interesting without Monster Tajima and Rhys Millen in the mix, this year's grouping is perhaps more intriguing than ever. Two Ford RS200s are entered this year, Lovefab Motorsports has brought its radical 850-horsepower Acura NSX and the open-cockpit Palatov Motorsport D4 Pikes Peak Special is making its debut. Some of the usual names have come back as well. Paul Dallenbach is aiming to take down the overall record once again with an updated version of his turbocharged 1,400-horsepower winged monster, and Jean-Philippe Dayraut has returned for a second year with his Nissan GT-R-powered Dacia Duster. The Frenchman looked quick enough to easily improve on his overall time of 10:17.707 set last year, setting the fastest time of the day with segment time of 3:54.96. Dallenbach was second fastest with a time of 3:59.70, followed by David Donner in the Palatov Motorsport entry with a 4:10.31. Returning to Time Attack (2WD and AWD have been combined for 2012) after competing in the Unlimited division for the last two years, Rhys Millen is looking to take back the class record set by his father, Rod Millen, last year. To do so he's brought an updated version of his Hyundai Genesis Coupe race car fitted with a new engine and wider body that can fit larger tires. The changes seem to have made a positive effect, as Millen blew away the Time Attack competition with a segment time of 4:06.24 - the fourth fastest of any class. Four-time SCCA World Challenge GT champion Randy Pobst was second fastest, putting in a run of 4:22.75 in his 2001 Audi A4, followed by David Kern's 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with a 4:25.23. We'll have more coverage of the Unlimited and Time Attack classes when they take on the middle section of the course tomorrow morning for the third and final practice day. Get an insanely noticeable plug-in hybrid car, the Fisker Karma. Chrome it. Get chased by paparazzi going over 100 miles per hour, then get pulled over and get a speeding ticket. These are all steps that Justin Bieber has managed to accomplish. Now, he's added a fifth: have the paparazzo be the first charged under California's new anti-paparazzi law, which makes it a crime to "create a dangerous situation while in pursuit of a celebrity for profit," writes the Toronto Sun. State prosecutors filed four charges against paparazzo Paul Raef, who chased Bieber "in a careless, reckless fashion," (in the words of Los Angeles councilman Dennis Zine). Raef is pleading "not guilty" even though Bieber identified him to the police. His lawyer said Raef was just like any other reporter and is thus protected by the First Amendment. The arraignment takes place August 24. If convicted, Raef could spend a year in jail and need to pay a $3,500 fime. Yet safer cars for drivers and passengers haven't meant an improvement for first responders. On the contrary, the added complexity and new technologies employed in modern vehicles routinely frustrate firefighters attempting to save occupants involved in a crash. According to USA Today, part of the problem facing rescuers is just knowing what hazards might be lurking beneath the sheetmetal. From high-strength steel that's difficult to cut to airbags hidden in every nook and cranny, rescuers face not just frustration, but real danger. Like high-voltage systems in hybrids and electric cars, some of which can be difficult to tell apart from conventional models, according to the report. To complicate all of this, firefighters are often left in the dark by automakers, and when they do get to practice on vehicles, often those are older models. But things are changing, as industry groups, including the Society of Automotive Engineers, are working on addressing some of these new challenges. Champions Mode allows platers to take on Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, and Michael Schumacker in specific challenges. The challenges are in the form of quick races and each champion has a unique scenario under which you compete with him. You must beat the driver to unlock the next challenge against the champions. For example: If you choose to race Kimi Raikkonen, you are situated at Spa Francorchamps. You, the driver, have just pitted with a fresh set of tires. The rest of the pack is out on the track with worn rubber. You must get back out on the track, overtake the field, and beat Kimi in just three laps. Sounds easy right? They don't call it Campions Mode for nuthin'. F1 2012 will debut at Gamescom, being held August 15 to 19 in Cologne, Germany. The game will launch over here on September 18, 2012 for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the PC. The game will also feature the Hockenheim Circuit, which returns to the F1 schedule, as well as the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. After all, getting U.S. Dept. of Energy Grants, rolling out a resilient Nanophosphate EXT phosphate battery and signing a deal with Smith Electric Vehicles, can only get you so far. So, how about bringing in a Chinese investor? That is working pretty well for Volvo. A123 Systems signed an agreement on August 8th with Wanxiang Group Corporation that could bring in a $450 million investment and give the large Chinese automotive components manufacturer an 80 percent ownership stake. The non-binding agreement with Wanxiang brings in needed cash flow and gives A123 Systems access to vehicle electrification and grid-scale energy storage in China. Republican House of Representative Cliff Stearns questioned the safety of the agreement, writing in a statement that, "It appears the Department of Energy and the Obama administration have failed to secure sensitive taxpayer funded intellectual property from being transferred to a foreign adversary, which raises serious national security issues. ... There is definitely a growing concern about foreign- controlled or owned companies attempting to gain a foothold into our supply chain in the United States. We need to make sure the Federal government isn't an unwitting accomplice to the theft of our own national secrets by providing them with multimillion-dollar government grants and loans." Making battery packs for electric vehicles is not an easy business to break into. Automakers tend to build them in-house or hire a veteran company like Panasonic. For battery companies, supplier contracts help, but are not a guarantee. Battery maker Ener1 found this out when the Norwegian carmaker Think stopped production of its Think City electric car at its Elkhart, IN, assembly plant. While the company has mostly adhered to its public position that everything is fine, clearly there are some changes being wrought behind the scenes at the Japanese automaker. For one, Honda's North American product development team is going to be taking over the next-generation Civic, according to Automotive News. Honda will also be developing the Acura NSX here, according to remarks made by Erik Berkman, the company's new president of Honda R&D Americas, speaking at the annual Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars. Berkman has been in charge of Honda's Ohio-based research and development center since April. Todos conocemos el ambiente, al fiesta que hay en torno a ese fin de semana mágico. Sin embargo, para algunos, ante la dominación aplastando de Audi, la carrera perdió un poco de su atractivo. Para ellos, y desde hace tiempo, la organización creó un evento llamado Le Mans Classique. Durante un fin de semana se tiene la oportunidad de ver de cerca y rodar como antaño las máquinas que forjaron la leyenda de esa carrera. En esta ocasión, y como no participaba en la carrera, Porsche puso toda la carne en el asador desplazando a un equipo impresionante de medios y coches para el evento, tanto clásicos, como modernos y futuros. Sí, el 918 Spyder también estaba ahí (¿Hay algún sitio donde aparezca un 918 Spyder?). Pero tranquilo, no te lo vamos a enseñar. (Si insistes lo puedes ver aquí.) Lo que sí puedes ver son los monstruos sagrados que Porsche llevó a rodar en esta ocasión. Pues bien, ahora es Suzuki la que hace lo propio con el Landy e incluye una variante idéntica. Ambos modelos quedan reservados para el mercado japonés. El Landy es fruto de la colaboración entre Nissan y Suzuki. El Landy S-Hybrid cuenta con un motor de dos litros y sistema Stop&Start y de regeneración de energía de la frenada. Además del cambio CVT adaptado para mejorar los consumos, se puede elegir con tracción total. But the tone and tenor is spot on, with a Southern officer explaining to a fellow policeman named Buford and the town judge how he's caught a "cute li'l gal no bigger than a minute" wheeling her "racing car" through town.Dodge has so far resurrected the Challenger, Charger and (now SRT) Viper. According to The Detroit News, Akerson bought 25,000 shares of GM stock this week, investing a cool half-a-million bucks in his own company. The move comes despite Akerson having "incurred significant paper losses" of about $1.8 million on his GM stock holdings, now reported at 272,838 shares. A GM spokesman told the News that the latest stock purchase was a personal investment. En los seis primeros meses del año, Audi entregó 852.900 coches en todo el mundo, lo que supone un incremento del 12,4%. Sólo en el mes de julio vendió 119.600 unidades. El mayor crecimiento en el mes de julio fue para Estados Unidos con un 28% más, mientras que en Alemania subió un 10,7%. Como es habitual, China es uno de los mercados con el incremento más significativo (+34,6%) pasando de los 203.686 coches de 2011 a los 267.900 de la primera mitad de 2012. Allí, el Q5 (de montaje local) y el recién introducido Q3 fueron los líderes de la marca. Otros mercados experimentan crecimientos importantes en términos relativos, como India con un +49%, pero no llega a un volumen total de 5.000 coches. Todo apunta a que nuestros vecinos galos cerrarán el año en negativo. Los dirigentes de Audi confían en el nuevo Audi A3 par mejorar aún más sus resultados en las segunda mitad del año. | Posted: 09 Aug 2012 02:59 PM PDT  Consumer Reports calls out "Five Popular Cars To Avoid," including Prius C Filed under: Hybrid, Toyota Those crusaders of shopping empowerment over at Consumer Reports have put together a list of five cars to avoid, even if their sales numbers suggest otherwise. CR points out that just because a vehicle is making a lot of buzz and ringing cash registers, that doesn't necessarily make it a wise choice for buyers. According to the report, these are vehicles that either tested poorly or have been experiencing poor reliability in their new car surveys. Perhaps of little surprise is the presence of the Honda Civic on this list. The latest Civic has been getting dinged by auto critics left and right, and CR specifically points to a "Choppy ride, noisy cabin, vague steering, and mediocre interior quality" as reasons for its inclusion on the list. Its a good thing, then, that a short-term update is its way. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Consumer Reports once again voices its disapproval of the Toyota Prius C. We knew they weren't in love with it when they reviewed it back in May, and apparently the passage of time hasn't softened their opinions of Toyota's least-expensive hybrid. Se trata de una audaz apuesta por las economías de ese continente y una manera más de contrarrestar las pérdidas generadas en Europa. Renault y Nissan están aumentando la capacidad de la nueva fábrica Renault de Tanger (Marruecos) donde se produce el Dacia Lodgy. La fábrica ya supuso una inversión de mil millones de euros y Renault está preparando una segunda planta en Argelia, pero aún no tiene fecha de inicio. Para Jean-Christophe Kugler, vicepresidente de Renault para la región, "el continente se está estabilizando". El tercer fabricante europeo está potenciado al máximo su marca low-cost Dacia en África frente a una competencia cada vez más dura en Europa. Las ventas del grupo han caído y tiene dificultades para luchar contra Hyundai-Kia y los modelos de acceso a gama de BMW y Mercedes-Benz en el segmento de los compactos. Renault es el fabricante que acusa la mayor caída de ventas del año en Europa. Renault que ocupaba el 9,5% del mercado europeo ha caído a un 8% este año, mientras que Hyundai y Kia pasaron del 4,7& al 5,9%. BMW y MINI también vieron su parte aumentar, pasaron del 5,7% al 6,1%. | Posted: 09 Aug 2012 02:59 PM PDT  Official: Audi bringing digital rearview mirror from racing to production Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Technology, Audi, Electric, Luxury Audi's digital rearview mirror is officially going from the Le Mans clobbering, race-only Audi R18 to the road-going R8 e-tron (click the image above to enlarge). Lacking a rear window put the R8 e-tron in the same rear-view challenged category as its racing brethren, and so has been provided the same solution. The 7.7-inch AMOLED screen receives the feed from a tiny camera just a few millimeters across. The screen is dimmable, will automatically reduce the glare from the headlights of cars behind, and can be switched off if the driver just isn't with it. For now, it appears the screen will just display the camera image, but Audi says it's working on adding more information to the display in the future. Lo más interesante de esta versión es que combina la deportividad de su diseño como un interior mucho más práctico y un maletero amplio con un volumen mínimo de 590 litros. Sinds jaar en dag lepelt Spyker 4.2 liter V8 motoren van Audi achterin hun modellen, maar die voorraad is bijna op en dus zijn ze hard op zoek naar iets anders.
