| Posted: 08 Aug 2012 01:01 AM PDT  Dodge deja la NASCAR Filed under: Dodge, Competición Dentro del Grupo Chrysler hay un nuevo proyecto deportivo que se lleva todas las miradas, el del SRT Viper GTS-R, recién estrenado el pasado fin de semana en Mid-Ohio. Pero no hay dinero ni interés para correr todo y en todos los campeonatos, y por esa razón, unida a la salida de Penske como operador, Dodge dejará la NASCAR el año que viene. Recordemos que ahora mismo el campeonato apenas tiene nada de un coche de producción, por lo que a nivel tecnológico y de desarrollo no aportaba nada a la marca. Eso sí, permitía tener presencia a nivel de imagen en uno de los campeonatos deportivos con más seguidores en Estados Unidos. In 2009 he received one of those Lightning McQueen Powerwheels, which would have been fun enough for someone his age. But according to the poster of this video, "after three years of use he had worn through the plastic wheels. We decided to upgrade the OEM plastic wheels with rubber tires." But that was not the end. Not by a mile. His father, in a shop with some high-performance metal, continued to modify the Powerwheel, to the point that it now has a partial aluminum chassis, 24-volt gel batteries and a 500-Watt, 0.66-horsepower electric motor. The car also has disc brakes, Sparco battery cutoff switch, and a modulated throttle. Further emphasizing that Evan here has the coolest parents, he races the custom Powerwheel at a dirt track, just like the dirt track in Cars. A couple months ago, BYD saw its stock take a big hit amidst speculation about the safety of its batteries when an e6 taxi caught fire in a fatal crash after getting rear-ended by a Nissan GT-R being driven at extremely high speed. Now, a government investigation has discovered that the batteries were not the cause of either the blaze, or the three deaths. Apparently, it was the impact that killed the passengers. They, sadly, "suffered severe damage which exceeded the endurance limit of human bodies." As for the batteries, while 21 of the 96 lithium ion phosphate cells did experience secondary fire damage, none of them exploded despite serious deformation of the battery compartment. The initial ignition seems to have stemmed from arcing that spread to combustible materials. While it could be argued that electricity played a part in starting the fire, it must also be remembered that every vehicle holds a significant amount of potential energy and that catastrophic damage may unleash it, whether that power is stored in the form of batteries or liquid fuel. Perhaps because electric vehicles are relatively few in number, an accident like this gets a lot of media attention and, without all the facts at hand, incorrect conjecture arises. Vehicle fires are, however, already an unfortunate part of automotive reality. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 2010 saw 184,500 such events occur on our roads, and that number is a significant improvement (i.e., a decrease) over years past. Indeed, it seems probable that replacing gas-powered vehicles with electrics will improve on this situation even further. How? Today things are a little different. Boxier, more van-like. Yet the forthcoming 2013 Ford Transit our spy shooters captured roaming the streets of Detroit is unlike any cargo van Americans have ever known. For the first time, Ford has deemed us worthy of getting a version of its European workhorse. If you've been following the drama, the venerable E-Series van is slated for the long walk into the sunset. That's right, millions of plumbers, delivery guys, shuttle bus drivers and even a few shag-carpet-loving conversion van aficionados are going to have to learn to love a new mistress. Ford has hinted that the American version of the Transit will be truckier than the curvy European version previewed by the Transit Tourneo Custom Concept. Expect it to look like a cross between the European model and an F-150. Ford has said the van will be powered by a version of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost that's already under the hood of the F-150, and that there will be a diesel variant as well. Now for the second episode, the subject is a 1972 BMW 2002 that's lavished with love by Patrick Burns, who's BMW affliction is inherited from his father Wendell. There's forty years of soul in Patrick's car, and it's a driver. The inevitable blemishes are part of the car's personality, though, and one of the things Patrick enjoys is picking up more stories from the people he encounters when he's out with his distinctive silver 2002. It's a another well-told story where the car, while playing a central role, is but a vehicle for fostering deeper human connections. Al menos eso creemos a juzgar por las señales que hemos estado viendo en los últimos meses (entre ellas algunas citas del propio presidente James Muir). Según se puede comprobar en la web oficial del Salón del Automóvil de Sao Paulo, una de las firmas que ya ha confirmado su asistencia en SEAT. Te recordamos que desde el año 2001 la marca española no tiene presencia en este país. Anteriormente habían comercializado los Ibiza, Córdoba e Inca de fabricación argentina pero adaptados a los gustos brasileños (había incluso un motor 1.0 capaz de usar alcohol). Desconocemos la oferta de modelos que serán presentados en la muestra brasileña pero no deberían faltar los tres grandes pilares de la firma: Ibiza, León y Toledo. Para salir de dudas deberemos esperar hasta el 24 de octubre, día en el que abrirá sus puertas. If the bill passes, it would end an existing electric vehicle tax credit for golf carts that can't be taken on public highways, unlike electric bikes. The committee approved the amendment by a voice vote as part of a broader package of tax measures after a debate over whether e-bikes are worth it. Creating more U.S. jobs, and not losing them overseas, was cited as a reason for supporting it. E-bikes are very big in China - about 25 million of them were sold there last year, compared to less than 100,000 in the United States. Major car and motorcycle makers are considering entering the e-bike market in the U.S. As for now, three smaller companies have been selling bikes and bringing in investors: Brammo, BRD, and Zero Motorcycles. Last month, Brammo Inc. closed the first $13 million of a $45 million funding round, and has other financial backers. Some analysts think federal tax credits are critical for building up sales volume and ramping up production volumes, bringing down retail prices long term. Plug-in passenger vehicles have a tax credit worth up to $7,500, depending on the size of the battery. Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle) Electric vehicle fans have been building their own do-it-yourself cars for years, and a Japanese company thinks it has just the thing to reach that market: a quirky little DIY EV kit. We're not saying Modi chose "Pius" as the product name as a crass way to trick that audience, just that the name certainly reminds us of another, quite popular, green vehicle. Modi Corporation, a Japan-based company making prototype vehicles, will begin offering the "micro compact car" Pius kit next spring. Range on a full charge is only expected to be a little over 15 miles, and it will only drive about 22 miles per hour at top speed, so you'd basically be building a neighborhood EV. Pricing for the mini-EV has yet to be announced. The single-seater can be registered as a class-1 motorized bicycle in Japan. While it's certainly not an appealing commuter car, the company expects that the do-it-yourself kit will be used as an educational tool for learning the basic functions and manufacturing of EVs. Creative uses of aluminum alloys and exotic materials like carbon fiber help reduce weight and increase fuel economy and/or performance. But both aluminum and carbon fiber are expensive. Steel has been around for centuries, and technological advancements have made it stronger, cheaper and lighter. But, argues David Paratore, president and CEO of NanoSteel, current steel technology is pushing the limits of what it can do. Harder steel is difficult to form into automotive parts. But easier-to-form steel is, by nature, less rigid. Paratore's company has developed a new steel they claim is stronger yet easier to form than conventional automotive steel. The new alloy can be made using conventional steel processes and no new welding techniques or machines are needed. On top of all that, NanoSteel claims big weight-saving advantages. "We're not talking about saving grams. We're talking about saving kilograms," Paratore says in the video below. "Maybe hundreds of pounds in a car." Its enough of a breakthrough that it has gotten the attention and investment of General Motors and its investment subsidiary, GM Ventures. "We are investing in NanoSteel because of the opportunity associated with their new steel alloy technology," says Jon Lauckner, GM's Chief Technology Officer, Vice President of Global R&D and President of GM Ventures LLC. "Over the next several years, light-weighting of vehicles will be a major focus area to improve fuel economy. NanoSteel's nano-structured alloys offer unique material characteristics that are not available today, making them a potential game-changer." Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Performance, Europe, Buick, GM, Opel We've seen spy shots of the base Opel Insignia wearing facelifted front and rear ends, and now it appears that the more potent OPC version will be benefitting from a nip/tuck, as well. The front bumper has been redesigned, incorporating new air intakes - toned-down versions of the model's signature fangs - as well as a new grille. Out back, there will be minimal changes to the overall fascia, most likely stuff like slightly redesigned taillamps, and inside, these spy shots show a larger navigation/infotainment screen sitting atop the center console. This is all well and good for the Insignia, but we're wondering how these changes will impact North America's Buick Regal GS. No, it may not share the same powertrain punch as the Euro-spec OPC, but visually, the cars are nearly identical. When questioned about possible changes for the GS, a Buick spokesperson told us that the automaker "can't comment" on any changes at this point. According to The Wall Street Journal, a Twitter account claiming to be Russian Interior Minister Vladamir Kolokoltsv tweeted that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad had been injured or killed. That tweet which occurred at 9:59 AM EST, was followed by two more tweets alleging the confirmation of al-Assad's death. In the hour following that tweet, light, sweet crude prices rose from $90.82 to $91.99, and the jump took place in between 10:15 and 10:45. According to the Reuters report, the Russian ministry denies firing off the tweets and denies any connection to the account. Price Futures Group analyst Phil Flynn pointed out "a well-placed story can move the market, and that looks like what happened." Though Syria itself is not a major oil producer, it is feared that Iran would react to the news because of their connection to and support of Assad In the wake of sanctions imposed due to their continued participation in a nuclear weapons program, Iran has threatened to close off the Straight of Hormuz, a major throughway for ships carrying crude oil to the rest of the world. Because of the hypersensitivity of the international tensions in the Middle East, and those trading in oils who follow the area closely, the rumor of Assad's demised spread like wildfire. The combination of Mideast unrest, and the spread of information through texts and tweets means it's unlikely this is the last time something like this will happen.Rising fuel prices got you down? Hace unos días, se veía el coche en medio del tráfico. Ahora, lo vemos rodar a fondo en el Nürburgring. Y el V8 AMG suena cada vez más como un auténtico muscle car... Sabemos que el coche dispondrá de una carrocería modificada a nivel aerodinámico, con un frontal más agresivo, y unos pasos de ruedas ensanchados y un difusor en la parte inferior de su zaga. Los pasos de ruedas ensanchados podrían suponer unas vías ligeramente más grandes, para mejorar el comportamiento dinámico -es un excelente gran turismo, pero no un verdadero deportivo que pueda inquietar a un Porsche 911, un Ferrari 458 Italia o Lamborghini Gallardo-. Bajo el capó, seguirá fiel al puesto el V8 de 6.2 litros de AMG, pero con una potencia que debería rondar los 650 CV para abatir el 0 a 100 km/h en menos de 3,8 segundos. La velocidad máxima sería superior a los 320 km/h. Una de las incógnitas es la cifra de par motor. AMG ya llegó en varias ocasiones a más de 1.000 Nm, pero no encuentra caja de cambios que aguante semejante salvajada (Brabus, el eterno rival, tiene el mismo problema al potenciar los motores AMG). Por desgracia, todavía seguimos sin ver mucho de su carrocería modificada, ni tampoco se ha filtrado una fecha de presentación. If you want Formula Cross to put it together for you, something you might want to consider since the kit includes 40 items plus hardware, that will be an extra $1,350 after you've delivered it to their facility. However, Formula Cross touts that every bit of their creation is customizable, so if you've got time you could have some fun wrenching your own creation - and we're told there's no welding required. The wet weight has gone up since the initial announcement, from 495 pounds to 620 pounds "on certain models," but that shouldn't stop the fun. To get in line with a pre-order will run you $2,500, and the first deliveries are scheduled to leave the building in November. This being a completely new animal, however, we wouldn't be surprised if specs, dates and prices come in for revision before then. Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Performance, Europe, Buick, GM, Opel We've seen spy shots of the base Opel Insignia wearing facelifted front and rear ends, and now it appears that the more potent OPC version will be benefitting from a nip/tuck, as well. The front bumper has been redesigned, incorporating new air intakes - toned-down versions of the model's signature fangs - as well as a new grille. Out back, there will be minimal changes to the overall fascia, most likely stuff like slightly redesigned taillamps, and inside, these spy shots show a larger navigation/infotainment screen sitting atop the center console. This is all well and good for the Insignia, but we're wondering how these changes will impact North America's Buick Regal GS. No, it may not share the same powertrain punch as the Euro-spec OPC, but visually, the cars are nearly identical. When questioned about possible changes for the GS, a Buick spokesperson told us that the automaker "can't comment" on any changes at this point. Even so, we wouldn't be surprised if some small changes come our way in the next year or so.Opel Insignia OPC getting facelift. Sabemos que BMW M ha creado más de una locura que nunca llegó a los concesionarios, muchas de ellas ni siquiera llegando a ver la luz de los focos de los salones o de los flashes de los fotógrafos. Algunos, de vez en cuando, van saliendo, como ls BMW M3 pick-up (E30 y E92) o el M5 Cabrio de dos puertas (E34). O esta locura sobre ruedas, un BMW Z3 V12. Las fotos aparecieron en la página de facebook de BMW M, sin más información. Suponemos que nunca se planteó una versión comercial de este roadster, quizá como concept car o, simplemente, para ver qué pasaba con el chasis. El Z3 M es ya un coche delicado de llevar sobre mojado, hay que tener buenas manos. Y es que sólo en su último año de producción dispuso de control de estabilidad (por si buscas uno de ocasión es un dato a tener en cuenta). El V12, que debió entrar con calzador, tiene toda la pinta de ser el mismo que equipaba el 850i (E31) y que, según las variantes, desarrollaba 300 o 326 CV. Como siempre en estos casos, surgen más preguntas que respestuas. Las fotos fueron tomadas en un concesionario y son recientes, pues en el fondo de una de las fotos se aprecia un M3 GTS aparcado fuera (color naranja, alerón negro). The McLaren F1 - a car universally considered one of the most lust-worthy machines of all time - made use of a 6.1-liter V12 provided by BMW that pushed out 618 naturally aspirated horsepower. Though not a true successor to the iconic F1, McLaren's more recent MP4-12C makes 617 horsepower from just eight cylinders displacing 3.8 liters, albeit with the help of twin turbochargers. Such power capabilities have prompted McLaren managing director Antony Sheriff to proclaim, "The V12 engine is a thing of the past. The engine belongs in a museum." We're not quite ready to archive away all thoughts of V12-powered supercars, but Sheriff has a point. V8 engines, even with turbochargers in tow, are easier to package than V12s and have significantly fewer moving parts, which is good for both power and efficiency. Sheriff suggests that even a V6 would be a possibility for future high-performance applications from McLaren. That's one of the first surprises about the Hiriko, an urban battery-electric two-seat vehicle that a Basque consortium of auto suppliers is looking to start selling to municipalities for carsharing purposes starting next year, according to the New York Times.Hiriko Driving Mobility Group, which is working with the Spanish government and MIT (which has been working on the concept since at least 2007) and has an $87 million budget, unveiled its first version of the EV in January and has made about 20 vehicles for testing purposes. Hiroko will come in three versions: the Fold (standard), Alai (convertible) and Laga (truck). The company will target cities such as Barcelona, Berlin and San Francisco for potential purchases.As we've reported, all of models will be small and will be able to get smaller. The Hiriko will be about eight feet long, about a foot shorter than the Smart ForTwo, and has a hinged body that allows it to shrink its length to about five feet - that's shorter than a typical bicycle. Additionally, all of the vehicle's four wheels will be able to rotate at a 60-degree angle, which is great for both parking and doing donuts. In the lawsuit, a trust for Motors Liquidation Co., better known as "Old GM," alleges that certain hedge funds took advantage of a last-minute opportunity for a profit in the midst of the General Motors bankruptcy filing. According to the Bloomberg report, the trust is looking to have a $367 million payment and a $2.67 claim from holders of GM Nova Scotia's notes negated, or at the very least reduced. The trust says that the hedge funds are looking to be compensated three times more than what was owed to them by GM. "New GM," created in a vast series of financial maneuvers, says that the incident threatened to put a wrench in the sale of GM that allowed it to survive. The trust claims that since the agreement with the hedge funds was reached after GM came under bankruptcy protection, the hedge fund required bankruptcy court approval - something that the trust claims the hedge fund never did. General Motors points outs that the agreement with the hedge funds allowed it to manage inter-company loans was was essential in moving the carmaker forward. Este año fallecieron dos grandes del automovilismo, Roy Salvadori y Carroll Shelby. Como pilotos, el dúo se impuso en las 24 horas de Le Mans de 1959 con un Aston Martin DBR1 dando así a la marca inglesa su única victoria en la prueba gala. Para rendir homenaje a los dos veteranos, Eventa Motor propone a la venta una pieza de automobilia, como se suele decir en los círculos de coleccionistas, una "maqueta" a escala 1:1 del Aston Martin DBR1, pero sin montar. Está tal y como saldría de una caja de Airfix o Revell. El "kit, para el que se uso una recreación de la carrocería, mide 6,34 m de largo por 3,29 m de alto. Sin duda tendrá más éxito en el garaje de la colección que la típica señal de gasolinera de los años 50 o los pósters de carreras de los años 30. Viene, además, acompañado de una gorra firmada por los dos pilotos con su certificado de autenticidad. Y cuando te canses de ver el kit en la pared del garaje, Eventa motor fabrica una recreación del DBR1 en función de los deseos del cliente, motor de época o reciente, frenos de tambor o de discos, etc con la que podrás circular. ¿El precio de todo esto?
