Ventas julio 2012: Chile

Video: Watch Greg Tracy snap the 10-minute Pikes Peak barrier
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Motorcycle There are the racers who tackle the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on four wheels and then there are the (even more) insane bastards who head up the mountain on bikes. Greg Tracy is without a doubt one of the most talented of those souls. He's collected the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb overall win a total of six times, and this year, he blew straight past the 10 minute barrier on his Ducati with a 9:58.262 time up the course. Impressive, given the rider laid down a machine the weekend before the hill climb during a video shoot. The time put him within six seconds of this year's winner, Carlin Dunne. Six seconds is a lifetime in motorsports, but watching Tracy wring the big Duc out over the 12-mile slog to the top makes it hard to fathom pulling any more time from the run. All of a sudden, Fox's Neil Cavuto likes electric cars?

That's pretty much our response to Fox Business anchor and long-time electric-drive vehicle basher Neil Cavuto plugging for plug-ins. Calling it "a plug-in that gets it," Cavuto recently praised the 2014 Infiniti LE electric vehicle, Green Car Reports notes. The LE concept was unveiled at the New York Auto Show earlier this year and, this month, Nissan's luxury badge re-confirmed that it will start selling a production LE in 2014. The part that Cavuto is most enamored with is that, "it's a plug in that doesn't plug in at all!" Actually, Cavuto is wrong, since the LE does plug in when needed, it just offers wireless charging as well. The LE is expected to have slightly more power and torque than the Nissan Leaf. Cavuto once called the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in "the dumbest thing I've ever seen." Check out this video clip from last year for a highlight reel of sorts for Cavuto's diatribes against the Volt, including his bizarre belief that plug-in cars kill marriages. Speaking about the LE, he says, "I think it's a game changer. Official: Confederate heads to Bonneville with prototype X132 Hellcat Combat
Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, Motorcycle, Specialty In 2010, James Hoegh rode his Confederate P120 Fighter motorcycle across the Bonneville Salt Flats and reached 159 miles per hour. A little later he went back and got that up to 162.6 mph. This year he's going back to the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials in Bonneville to try and hit 170 mph, which would break the record of 168.912 mph in the APF3000 class, set last year by Wink Ellis. Heogh is sticking with Confederate for the attempt, but he's switched over to the X132 Hellcat Combat, a specially developed prototype version of the X132 Hellcat. The one-of-a-kind bike maintains the 132-cubic-inch S&S XWedge engine of the standard Hellcat and fits upgraded kit like a custom dual-track intake, CNC-ported heads with shorter cylinders, new rocker arms, a radiused crankshaft and a different compression ratio. It won't be one-of-a-kind for long though, with Confederate set to produce "a limited number" of Hellcat Combats early next year. The trials were held this past weekend and results weren't available at the time of writing, but if Hoegh manages to break the record with his, we imagine the production run will sell out even faster than limited-edition Confederates usually do. Report: Hertz pays $2.3B for Dollar Thrifty
Filed under: Earnings/Financials Car rental giant Hertz is in the process of purchasing Dollar Thrifty. The deal is said to be for $2.3 billion, according to an Associated Press report. As a result, Dollar Thrifty stock increased by seven percent in trading before the market opened today. According to the report, Hertz has been eying its rental car rival for two years now. Additionally, Avis Budget Group was also interested in purchasing Dollar Thrifty. Hertz made the move, though, at a price of $87.50 per share, representing an eight-percent premium over Friday's closing price for the stock of $81 per share. In a statement, Hertz Chairman and CEO Mark P. Frissora said that the buyout will give his company two more well-known brands and make the company more competitive in Europe and other international markets. While both parties have agreed to the deal, the Federal Trade Commission must approve the acquisition. According to the report, Hertz has maintained an open line of communication with the FTC throughout the process. Hertz has roughly 8,650 locations of various types in 150 nations throughout the globe. Dollar Thrifty has about 280 locations in the U.S. and Canada and 1,300 franchise locations worldwide. The two corporations when combined fulfills Dollar Thrifty President and CEO Scott Thompson's assertion that the "transaction is not only compelling for stockholders, but also will help broaden its reach." GM stopping Chevy Volt production for four weeks
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Manufacturing/Plants, Chevrolet, GM This is not the first time General Motors has idled Chevrolet Volt production (see here and here) but it is perhaps the most unexpected. According to Automotive News, the Volt's Detroit-Hamtramck plant will be shut down for four weeks - from September 17 until October 15 - starting next month. This will affect about 1,500 workers. With this news, it seems that GM must be sitting on more Volt inventory than we suspected. Earlier this year, the plant was shut down because GM had a 150-day supply of Volts, but sales have been good this summer. Still, AN says, as of August 1, GM had an 84-day supply. Another clue that there are more Volts around than people want, some Volt lease deals have surfaced recently that are considered underpriced. A spokesman told AN that, "We don't comment on production schedules. Report: BMW set to rejuvenate scooter business
Filed under: BMW, MotorcycleDo you remember the BMW C1? The funky scooter from the German automaker has become something of a two-wheeled cult classic. The scooter made either 15 or 18 horsepower, depending on which model you got. But the most notable thing about the C1 was its futuristic windshield/roof combination and its emphasis on safety - with its integrated seatbelt, it was said to be so safe as to not require a helmet.BMW got out of the scooter game when it ended production of the C1 in 2003, but it's poised to reemphasize that market in a big way. According to Bloomberg, BMW is looking to revive its scooter offerings, which already includes the C600 Sport and C650 GT. The lineup is set to be bolstered by the electric C Evolution e-Scooter. BMW hinted at the return of the C1 a few years back with the C1-E concept (above, right), but it merely laid the groundwork from the e-Scooter. This renewed focus may have something to do with rival Audi and its recent purchase of Ducati, as some are suggesting that the move has stoked BMW's desire to broaden its product portfolio to better compete with the Italian motorcycle builder. If it's a piece of the city-dweller market that BMW is after, they may also have competition from niche automaker Smart. Daimler's urban specialist will introduce an electric version of its ForTwo city car later this year. Smart also makes a bicycle with electric propulsion that is available in Europe for around $3,500 (it's set to go on sale in the U.S. in 2014). This will be followed by an electric scooter. Will BMW's renewed efforts in the scooter market be enough to fend off growing competition in the city vehicle market? Report: Former CEO Bahar files $10.6M suit against Lotus

Fired Lotus CEO Dany Bahar is reportedly suing his former employers for some $10.6 million, claiming that the automaker and its Malaysian owner, DRB, broke the law when they dismissed him. According to a report by Bloomberg Businessweek, DRB and Lotus will defend themselves in court rather than settling, including filing a countersuit against the former top executive. Bahar, 40, was canned on June 7, about two weeks after Lotus suspended him pending an investigation into his conduct. Cadillac may be working on not one, not two, but several new flagship models

According to a report by TheDetroitBureau.com, the two models are merely the first volley in a larger onslaught of new models. Though Cadillac doesn't aim to take on the German competitors "car-for-car," it's looking to aggressively expand its lineup. According to Cadillac marketing executive Don Butler, "These are fun, happy times at Cadillac... we're expanding and elevating the brand." According to Butler, the ATS will be followed by "ten new models in the next three years." In addition to a replacement for the Escalade SUV and the CTS range moving up the ladder to better compete with the BMW 5 Series, word is there will be a compact crossover on the way to slot under the SRX. The new CUV would take on the likes of the X1 and Audi Q3. So while Cadillac says it doesn't intend to compete with the Germans directly, it certainly won't walk away from a fight in certain key market segments. As expected, in the rollout of models will be a Cadillac version of the Chevrolet Volt, dubbed the ELR. It will be joined by perhaps more than one 'flagship' model. The redesigned Escalade will represent one of those flagships, while some version of the Cadillac Ciel concept is said to be headed for production - albeit a toned-down production reality from the stunning concept you see above. This production Ciel - we're betting on a flagship sedan - will share the Omega platform with a large sedan slotted above the XTS. Y es que el gobierno serbio se ha retrasado en el pago de unos 60 millones de euros a Fiat para la fábrica, según explicaba un medio italiano. Situada en Kragujevac, a 150 km al sur de Belgrado, el gobierno se habría también retrasado en la construcción de una carretera de acceso que uniría la factoría a la autopista más cercana. Fiat y el gobierno serbio han gastado ya más de mil millones de euros en esta fábrica que abrió sus puertas en abril de 2012 y emplea 2.400 personas con una capacidad de 200.000 vehículos anuales. Para un portavoz de Fiat, "los problemas de infraestrecturas no supondrá un retraso de la producción del 500L". Video: Police cams capture woman's 119-mph stuck accelerator run [w/video]
Filed under: Safety, Videos, Crossover, Kia Police car dashboard cameras have provided plenty of footage over the years of criminals attempting to evade police or horrific car accidents, but Lauri Ulvestad wasn't the former and some inspired - if not lucky - driving prevented the latter. Ulvestad, 47, of Ames, Iowa, experienced a stuck accelerator while driving her 2011 Kia Sorento along Interstate 35 in Missouri, and while she was able to call police to help clear traffic in front of her, it was her miraculous driving that ultimately ended the day with not so much as a scratch on her crossover. The dash cam footage of a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer shows Ulvestad at speeds of well over 100 miles per hour swerving around cars and even using the median to avoid a collision. Ulvestad's Sorento was equipped with a keyless, pushbutton starter that she was unable to turn off, and according to the phone recording with a 911 operator, she was also unable to get the car to decelerate or shift the vehicle into neutral. After the 59-mile ordeal that lasted for about 35 minutes, police finally told her to try pulling back on the accelerator while hitting the brakes. This worked, and her Sorento came to a stop on the shoulder, leading some to suggest that accelerator entrapment (i.e. a floor mat wedged under the gas pedal) was to blame rather than a computer-related unintended acceleration. It has been reported that Kia is investigating what caused the problem, but it is just amazing that nobody was injured during the course of this event. For vehicles with pushbutton starters, most vehicles can still be shut off by press and holding the starter button for a few seconds. Kia lanzará en 2013 un Cee'd Turbo para plantar cara al Golf GTI

Según lo publicado por Car and Driver, uno de los directivos de la firma surcoreana ha confirmado que el año la gama de compacto se completará con una versión más deportiva. El nuevo Cee'd Turbo debería plantar cara al Volkswagen Golf GTI y para ello se ofertará tanto con carrocería de cinco puertas como en la futura variante pro_cee'd de tres. Tendrá cambios en las suspensiones, dirección y en otros apartados, además de una estética más atractiva. Sobre el motor hay pocos datos aunque se especula que podría llevar un bloque de dos litros derivado del actual 1.6 GDI Turbo y que podría rondar los 220-230 CV de potencia. De confirmarse todo esto, Kia podría tener una interesante versión del compacto y entrar en un segmento en el que hasta ahora no tenía ningún representante. La versión más potente comercializada en Europa hasta ahora estaba equipada con el motor 2.0i 16v y desarrollaba 143 CV. En Sudáfrica sin embargo la firma lanzó una pequeña serie de 30 unidades con ese mismo motor pero sobrealimentado y una potencia final de 225 CV. Durante muchos años la firma italiana ha intentado sin éxito hacerse un hueco en este país, pero los altos precios no han facilitado las cosas. Ahora lo vuelven a intentar con el Giulietta. El nuevo importador, con base en San Petersburgo, tratará de cumplir los objetivos aprovechando el tirón que tienen hoy día los compactos premium. La oferta estará compuesta por los 1.4 TB de 120 CV, con un precio de 899.000 rublos (22.519 €), y el 1.4 Turbo MultiAir de 170 CV, que costará 1.060.000 rublos (26.551 €). Para compensar las altas tarifas, todos los Giulietta llegarán con un completo equipamiento en el que no faltarán el climatizador automático, llantas de aleación de 17 pulgadas y el sistema de sonido con Blue&Me. Lo malo es que el BMW 116i sale más barato que el italiano de 120 CV y eso que el alemán tiene 136 CV. Report: GM bans political candidates from plants until after Election Day
Filed under: Government/Legal, Plants/Manufacturing, GM Looking to avoid becoming a lightning rod for the Presidential race, General Motors is asking the candidates not to tour its plants until after Election Day. Ever since its bankruptcy in 2009 where it received billions of taxpayer dollars, GM has been used as leverage by both sides of the political aisle, but the automaker is hoping that by eliminating the presidential and presidential-hopeful photo ops, it can distance itself a little more from the negative "Government Motors" label. An article in the Detroit Free Press says that the auto bailout is expected to play a big role at the Democratic National Convention next month, and GM is still a key topic in this discussion as it is still 32 percent owned by the U.S. Treasury Department. GM has paid back $23 billion of the loans so far. Proof of GM's unwilling involvement in politics is evident by Vice President's recent quote stating: "Osama bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive." The efforts of the GM's bailout/bankruptcy recovery are still just as mixed as the issue was back in 2009. The automaker has seen big profits so far this year - $3.66 billion - and its credit rating was upgraded by Fitch Ratings, but its stocks are down 35.8 percent since 2010 meaning that the government's current investment in GM would be a loss of $15.6 billion if sold now. In addition to GM, the article also states that the Chrysler Group is closing its doors to the politicians until after November 6. Japan discloses CHAdeMo fast charger info to increase acceptance

But the Japanese government wants to take it global, and has thus disclosed more information about the CHAdeMO quick-charging technology standards as a way to encourage CHAdeMO adoption by more automakers. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry would like to see the charging infrastructure grow and EV prices come down by encouraging more competition through a widespread charging infrastructure. Before the announcement, the standard was only available to some automakers and power companies. Some of the information that will be disclosed includes the shape of the plug that connects the car to the charger and how to prevent electrocutions, writes Green Car Congress, citing Nikkei. CHAdeMo uses 480 volts of electricity, so safety will continue to be an important issue to address. Outside of Japan, the question of which fast charging technology will prevail is an open question. The new SAE Combo Charger design was unveiled earlier this year, but its exact standards have yet to be released. Still, most non-Japanese EV makers are embracing this technology rather than CHAdeMO. Right now, the only available mass-market EVs capable of fast charging with CHAdeMO are the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i. CHAdeMO was jointly developed by Toyota, Nissan and others, but Toyota has yet to take a stand on what fast charging technology will be used for the Toyota RAV4 Electric or other plug-in Toyota products. Most likely, it will be CHAdeMo for Toyota, joining ranks with the Japanese auto industry, versus U.S. and German automakers waiting for the SAE Combo Charger details to be announced. Report: Motor Trend tests Tesla Model S, finds 0-60 in 3.9 sec and 100.7 MPGe

When the EPA did its testing thing, it came up with a 265-mile range estimate for the version with the 85-kWh battery pack. Tesla is even offering a prize of some sort to anyone who drives a Model S over 400 miles on one charge. Now, Motor Trend writers has had the chance to spend some time in Tesla CEO Elon Musk's personal Performance Signature Model S to see just how far the electric car can be driven. The result? Your results may vary. First, the good news. Motor Trend ran a battery of tests on the Model S, and its independent measurements discovered the following ways that their independent testing beat the manufacturer's official numbers: 0-60 time: 3.9 seconds (Tesla official number is 4.4 seconds) Quarter mile: 12.5 seconds at 110.9 mph (12.6 seconds) 100.7 MPGe during a 200+ mile drive (EPA says 89 MPGe). So, then, what's the bad news? At roughly 65 mph with no A/C, MT "only" got 238 miles out of the battery. That's less than advertised, but MT offers an important and reasonable take on this issue: But the range that matters is really a psychological/perceptual one, not a specific number. Think about it: We drove from Fontana on the eastern edge of the L.A. basin to San Diego and all the way back to L.A.'s Pacific edge on one charge. Five hours of continuous driving. This is a breakthrough accomplishment that ought to knock down the range anxiety barrier that's substantially limited EV sales.
